Travail

In this workcamp you will help to prepare the site’s infrastructure for the construction of a yurt and a planned “nature kindergarten”. This means creating paths and helping to prepare the garden and the flowerbeds for the forthcoming summer season. You will also help to move an already existing yurt to another place which includes taking apart its wooden parts and reconstructing it. You will be guided and supervised by qualified craftsmen. Remember that you’ll mainly work outside and it is important to bring sturdy working clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty, some solid and waterproof shoes, working gloves and a rain jacket as the season can be unpredictable at times.

Logement et nourriture

You will be accommodated in a shared tent, so you will need to bring a sleeping mat as well as a sleeping bag. Considering the temperature you are also advised to bring some warm and cozy clothes. You will be able to cook and eat meals together. In case of extreme cold or bad weather conditions, you will be accommodated in an alternative and better insulated housing.

Situation, loisirs

Schwäbisch Gmünd is a city with roughly 60000 inhabitants and a marvelous historic city centre which is best enjoyed with a warm coffee in one of its cafés. The project site is situated at an old farm and very close to the train station, from which you can reach the city within a 15 minute walk. Here you will find the possibility to access all the basic necessities you will need (e.g. groceries, sanitary articles etc.).

Partenaire

The Sozialkraftwerk is a non-profit organisation who plans to open a kindergarten which aims for a holistic and innovative approach to pre-school education. In a safe setting of two yurts – connected by a level deck and surrounded by 2 hectares of land – children of mixed ages will take first steps towards participating in society and learning how to practice sustainability and how to shape and partake in social changes. You can find more information on the project partner on https://sozialkraftwerk.de/. In this project you are actively working for quality education (UN SDG 4 Quality Education) and helping to support biodiversity (UN SDG 15 Life on Land).

Commentaires additionnels

Working languages will be English and German. It is helpful, but not mandatory to have a basic knowledge of German. Ideally you are able to ride a bike as the host may provide cargo bikes to make bigger shopping tours in the city. The accommodation is very basic (it's a tent).

Clean three small streams in Oberzissen to avoid floodings! The streams were piped underground for years and then reopened. They still run in a canalized stream bed, but have become an important part of the townscape again. In order to prevent flooding, the streams must be cleared of vegetation over a length of about 300m. Branches, plants and rubbish can lead to the formation of barriers during heavy rainfall and flood the village centre. In addition, the railings on the banks are sanded down and repainted where necessary. These are an important safety precaution to ensure that nobody - especially children - falls into the streams, which are about 1m lower than the roads. Under the guidance of a master painter you will work in the middle of the village. Some smaller additional tasks will complete the project.

Logement et nourriture

You will stay in the local sports hall and the buildings of the soccer club, kitchen, showers and mats are provided. Outside you have plenty of space to use and also a small barbecue area. Volunteers will cook together.

Situation, loisirs

Oberzissen is a village with 1.100 inhabitants not far from Bonn. Oberzissen offers friendly people, a beautiful landscape, two pubs and an ice-cream parlour. You can find supermarkets in the net village (2km). On Whit Monday (June 1st) there will be a special cultural event: A catholic procession with horses and tractors starts in Oberzissen and leads to the neighbouring village and its chapel. Oberzissen has also a historic railway running the weekends with steam engine. Asides of this, you can go hiking, make barbecues, discover the nature, and have different activities together with locals. The number of excursions will be limited you can visit the Rhine Valley or other sights.

Partenaire

Oberzissen is a village with 1.100 inhabitants not far from Bonn. For the first time the local community asked IBG for the support of international volunteers. They ask for help to clear three small streams leading through the village centre but at the same time they are excited to meet you and get to know the different cultures of all volunteers. Your support will help the community to avoid the dangers of flooding (SDG 11 sustainable communities).

Travail

Your main task will be the preparation of the nature kindergarten: You are going to transform a former bee house into a place for the children to spend time at during bad weather. This includes painting the walls and decorating the room with wooden elements and decorations. Feel free to get creative! You are also going to make seats, benches and tables out of tree trunks for the children. Another task will be the creation of raised garden beds, which you will set up, fill with soil and prepare everything so that the children can then afterwards grow their own vegetables and fruit! There might be some other manual tasks awaiting you, such as putting together a sandbox for the children to play in. The second part of the project is to make the town’s swimming area more attractive: You will build a wooden foot bridge into the lake, hang up a “tarzan” rope to swing into the lake and set up a barbecue place on meadow next to the lake. Lots of outside manual and construction work is awaiting you, so please bring sturdy shoes, working gloves, sun protection and raingear!

Logement et nourriture

You will stay at the town’s youth house which is situated at the outskirts of the town, but easily reachable by foot. Inside the building, there will be two rooms for sleeping (please bring your own sleeping bag!), sanitary facilities and a kitchen. Outside, there is also plenty of space which you can use during your stay, such as a big garden and an “outside living room” under a roof. On Monday and Friday afternoon, some part of the youth centre will be open to youngsters (you can lock your rooms), the rest of the time the building is all yours. Supermarkets are nearby and can easily be reached by foot or bike. The worksite will also be reached by bike or foot.

Situation, loisirs

Höchstädt is situated on the river Danube and has a nice historical centre with museums and cafés and its own castle! Since it’s well connected by train, it is also possible to visit nearby towns such as Ulm and Augsburg or even Munich. The area is also great for nature lovers, there are plenty of well-developed bike-roads and many lakes that you can swim in. You will be able to meet local youngsters at the youth centre or through sports clubs.

Partenaire

The municipality of Hoechstaedt is looking forward to opening their first “nature kindergarten” at the start of September 2020. The kindergarten will have capacities for 20 children. In order to finish everything before the opening of the kindergarten, they need your help! The second project of the workcamp is the embellishment of the nearby quarry lake, so that it can be enjoyed by the general population of the town. It is important to the municipality to have a sustainable project that will enrich the community for many years (SDG 11 sustainable communities).

Commentaires additionnels

Volunteers will need to be able to swim in order to work next to the lake. It is also recommended that volunteers know how to ride a bike.

Support a Franconian village in the organization of their annual wine festival (“Weinfest”)! In one part of this workcamp, you will help the community of the village of Tauberzell in the organisation of their 2020 festival. This includes setting up the tents and stalls, running different shifts during the festival as well as dismantling the whole structure again in the end. Another task for your group will be to work together with a local association in maintaining and preserving the natural landscape surrounding the village.

Situation, loisirs

The village of Tauberzell is part of the community of Adelshofen in the southern German region of Franconia. The region is known for its wine, a rich tradition of beer brewing and other local culinary specialities. Nature lovers can find several hiking trails in the beautiful surrounding landscape. Rothenburg ob der Tauber, well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, is just 10km from Tauberzell. The cities of Nuremberg and Bamberg are not too far away either and might be visited on weekends.

Partenaire

The Franconian village of Tauberzell is hosting a group of international volunteers for the second time this year. From June 10th until June 14th, the village will organize a wine festival to celebrate the local tradition of wine making. Each year, around 10,000 visitors come to the festival, so the community is happy to have some supporting hands in setting up and running the festival. The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles. Therefore the activities at Lohra Castle combine aspects of cultural heritage preservation and aspects of natural heritage preservation. The participants of the Workcamps carry out works in the green areas and the forests around the castle, restoration work and collaboration in renovation works. The castle is surrounded by a vast green area and the volunteers will help in the maintenance of it, The tasks will be mowing and collecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds.

Logement et nourriture

ACCOMODATION In Lohra castle: Shared rooms with 2 - 5 beds in 3 guest houses, warm shower (limited hot water), 1 camp kitchen (cold water), coal-burning stoves. FOOD The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.

Situation, loisirs

Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a nature reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of the castle Lohra begins in the Middle Age. The castle is more than 1,000 years old. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different times: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. For years Lohra Castle was vacant. In the 1990s Open Houses started to restore the castle and to revive it by cultural activities. Since that time, a large number of Workcamps, Building Weeks, exhibitions, concerts and other activities with international participants took place in the castle. LEISURE TIME The camp is situated near a small village in rural Thuringia, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities. Usually average temperatures in Germany during the summer time are about 20º C to 30º C; during the night it will get colder. It is possible that there may be three weeks of non-stop sunshine, but every day rain is not impossible either. In September and October it's about 8º C to 18º C.

Partenaire

The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people began to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The initiative to save these buildings brought together people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided, bringing life again to these places in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by a camp fire. Today, spaces free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; nonetheless, it is now rare to find places where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of prejudice and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the do-ers. We want to be those who propose vision of initiating a new change in perspective while still being aware of the need to rely in the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.

The Agapedia children’s centre has become very popular in the last couple of years and wants to expand their space, so they can offer more activities to children. Therefore, they plan on converting the attic into a suitable and usable space for children. You will be helping with the extension of the building, which includes attaching insulation to the walls working with glue and screws, to smooth over the walls and paint them, as well as fixing the floor. In addition to working inside, there are also plenty of tasks outside to improve the garden. Among general painting works and other things, you will be renovating a small shed/hut in the garden. Make sure to bring clothes that can get dirty and sturdy shoes. Agapedia and the children will be excited to see the result of your work!

Logement et nourriture

You will stay at the children’s centre itself and there’ll be plenty of space. Mats and camping beds for sleeping are provided, so you only need to bring a sleeping bag. Esslingen am Neckar is a town in southern Germany near Stuttgart, which is well known for its medieval historical centre with a lot of beautiful old buildings. It is home to the oldest sparkling wine cellar in Germany. The town has a lot of cultural activities to offer, such as museums, art galleries, theatre, and cinema. In addition, it is only a 15min tram ride away from Stuttgart, where you will find plenty of activities, for example you could visit the famous Mercedes or Porsche car museum. If you are more into outdoor activities, you could rent bikes and follow the beautiful bike trail along the river Neckar. There is also a swimming pool in Esslingen itself where you can cool off after a day of work.

Partenaire

The Agapedia foundation was founded by the German football manager and former player Juergen Klinsmann. The foundation develops projects that help children in need. In the town of Esslingen, it is running a children’s centre in which children between 6 and 12 years come for different activities, which aim at increasing childrens’ self-confidence and help them discover their potential. Activities include circus arts, cooking, crafts, music, sports and games. International volunteers have already helped out in the project in the previous year. By volunteering in this project you support the foundation in including more children in their program (SDG 11 sustainable communities).
