The Green World is a community-based organization that empowers communities through agribusiness and environment conservation activities. The organization also runs rehabilitation and economic empowerment programs in prisons. The green world is trying to make community members self-reliant through the creation of green-collar jobs within their locality to minimize rural-urban migration thus decongesting slums and creating a healthier environment. The community members are also mobilized to plant trees as a way of combating climate change and increasing forest cover to conform to government policy.
The green world is engaging in rehabilitation activities in prisons to make inmates feel part of society and give them hope of starting a new life upon coming out of prison. Usually, majority of people or family members are hostile to people who are released from prison due to the mistakes they made. This project helps with reintegration into the community in liaison with the local administration. The released persons start income-generating projects as part of reintegration process.
The organization is also promoting sporting activities in schools as a way of nurturing students’ talents hence creating cohesion and love within the community.

Project hosted by

The Ahero Community Resource Center is a project that was initiated by CIVS in collaboration with the local community in 2014 with an aim to build and strengthen the community’s capacity to be self-reliant and to improve their living standards. The Center has been collaborating with the local community in various development fields through diverse capacity-building programs support and services they offer. These programs include:

Early Childhood Education Program: The center runs a kindergarten with about 110 children aged between 3-7 years who are either vulnerable to poverty or orphans. The children get free education and meals at the school. In the evening they go back home where they stay with their caregivers or guardians.

ICT and Business Training: The center provides a community hub for access of free training in computer skills, especially to the youths. This enables them to have increased ICT knowledge and exposure in the evolving world of technology. The center has partnered with other stakeholders to provide Business training to the local people which is enabling them to start small business ventures to generate income.

The Model Farm: This is an agricultural-based unit that offers space for practical-oriented training in the field of agriculture and Agri-Business. This provides the community with an opportunity to learn how to carry out various best farming operations and practices of various crops to maximize food production and improve food security and income generation. This project encompasses greenhouses, open farm, poultry unit, fishponds, etc.

Water and Sanitation Program: This project is focused on the treatment of tap water to become clean and safe for all domestic use in the community. The water is therefore connected in homesteads and sold at an economy-friendly and affordable fee as part of the income-generating activity for the center.

Community advocacy program: The center has a training and events hall which provides a space for holding community-based open forums on a regular basis. The program enables the community members to directly engage with their community or political leaders and raise the issues and concerns affecting them. In turn leaders directly respond and put approach measures to act upon the arising issues and concerns. This promotes active citizenship.

Feeding Program: Occasionally, the center runs a feeding program for a select group of needy children during school days by offering breakfast and lunch. This helps to improve the concentration of the children in the class, to motivate them to attend to school and also helps to improve their nutritional health. The efficiency of the program depends on the availability of food and support resources.

Cassava Value Addition: CIVS has set up a cassava processing and storage facility which also serves as a training section for agricultural value addition. Additionally, the project has installed a bakery facility where nutritious cassava cakes and bread are prepared to boost the children's feeding program and generate income for the project.

- Develop the agro-ecological area by growing organic produce;
- Raise awareness among young people in the community about responsible consumption and understanding environmental protection issues.
Work Description:

✔ Creation, adaptation and dissemination of promotional tools on the environment
✔ Management of partnerships with environmental stakeholders
✔ Introduction of new cultures in the agro-ecological area
✔ Leading groups of children in agro-ecological practices
✔ Learning ecological gardening techniques

Accomodation and food

International volunteers working on long to medium term projects are accommodated with Togolese host families. The families are chosen according to their proximity to the volunteer'splace of work. They provide a private room for the volunteers as well as drinking water and 3meals a day (meals are adapted according to the diet of each volunteer). The volunteer remains independent and is free to go out and participate in activities of his/her choice. Living with a host family allows a total immersion in Togolese life to discover all its facets.

Location and leisure

Situated 120 km north of Lomé, the commune of Kpalimé is the ideal place for nature lovers and
hikers who wish to discover beautiful mountainous landscapes and tropical flora. Numerous natural
waterfalls will allow you to refresh yourself at the water's edge. Kpalimé is also home to the most
important craft center of the country where a very large number of artists and craftsmen have settled.
In addition to the project, volunteers are free to pursue leisure activities such as discovery walks, hikes, festive outings and cultural encounters. These activities enable the volunteers to come into contact with the local population and discover Togolese culture. Please note that expenses relating to excursions and outings by volunteers are not included in the participation fees.

Project hosted by

The NGO Association Togolaise des Volontaires au Travail (ASTOVOT) has more than 60 years of experience in international voluntary service. Each year, it welcomes many volunteers from all over the world on short, medium and long term volunteer projects (3 weeks to 12 months) in Togo. These projects allow the national volunteers (about 200) to work hand in hand with the international volunteers and to create a real intercultural exchange throughout the year. ASTOVOT is a member of the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVSUNESCO) and of the Network of Africa Voluntary Organizations (NAVO), and is in partnership with several volunteer organizations in Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada and Africa. Its projects focus on community development through the promotion of education and citizenship, health, social, environmental protection and intercultural learning, renovation and construction of socio-community infrastructures.

Work

Espace Agro-Ecologique is a place where we come to learn, recharge, meet and share. It is an initiative of the NGO ASTOVOT for several years to promote agroecology and the preservation of biodiversity. This small farm located in a very wooded area with a small river nearby allows to exploit a plot of market gardening, where a diversity of organic vegetables is grown for local consumption.
Every summer, immersion stays make it possible to make accessible to all, the techniques and practices of agroecology at the scale of a garden. Over the years, this volunteer project has become a genuine solidarity program aimed at raising awareness and concretely transmitting agroecological values and techniques to national and international volunteers.
OBJECTIVES?
Preserve the biodiversity of the site;
Promote the cultivation of organic vegetables and fruits through agroecology;
Promote educational exchanges on agroecology and other practices for more responsible agriculture between volunteers and facilitators;
TASKS FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Manufacture of boards, nursery, hoeing; compost;
Transplanting seedlings, watering seedlings;
Reinforce the garden fence with bamboo;
Construction of a straw and bamboo hut for relaxing and preserving tools and products;
Organization of educational activities in the garden with children;

Accomodation and food

Accommodation is generally basic, simple and specific to the project location. On site, volunteers are accommodated in groups of three or four people per room. The number of people per room depends on how the volunteers themselves organise the group. In some places, volunteers can use dry toilets and showers without water inside. This means that volunteers will have to fetch water from a fountain or well. The association provides volunteers with plastic or foam mats. Volunteers who have sleeping bags can bring them with them if possible. Access to drinking water on site.
During the work camp, the volunteers will cook their own meals. An internal organisation will create groups that will alternate to carry out the various domestic tasks domestic tasks, including cooking. The food products used for cooking are imported, local and organic. The diet of each volunteer will be taken into taken into account when preparing meals. Volunteers will have access to tropical fruit such as bananas, oranges, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, papayas, etc.
Along side the main activities of the work camp, other activities are organised, such as discovery walks, hikes, festive outings and cultural encounters. These activities enable the volunteers to come into contact with the local population and to discover Togolese culture.

Location and leisure

Kpalimé is about an hour and a half's drive from Lomé and is set in a beautiful natural environment. Located in south-west Togo, the area surrounding the town is lush and fertile, encircled by thickly wooded hills, deep valleys and small farming villages. Kpalimé is also the country's most important craft centre, home to a large number of artists and craftsmen: woodcarvers, batikeur, potters, weavers, calabash-makers, etc. The many "nature" walks and hikes take you along the paths to discover the daily life of the local people, who live mainly from agriculture.

There is a member of our organisation who is in charge of welcoming volunteers at Lomé airport. He will take care of your accommodation in Lomé. - The price of a taxi between the airport and the bus station or the hotel varies between 6000 and 10000 FCFA (between 9€ and 15€), - Transportation is by bush taxi or a bus that takes you to Kpalimé. The price of a taxi between Lomé and Kpalimé is 3000 FCFA at the parking places (5€). We advise volunteers to pay 5,000 CFA francs for the driver to take you back to the association's headquarters.

Additional comments

The NGO ASTOVOT, like all associations in Togo, receives no subsidy from the Togolese government. It is the volunteers' participation fees that enable ASTOVOT to finance its projects. The cost of participation in volunteer work camps is €220 per person for 2 to 3 weeks. This contribution covers: accommodation costs; food; accompaniment of the group; administrative costs; purchase of materials and equipment for the project, and other steps involved in setting up volunteers on the project site. The funds contributed by the volunteers are divided as follows: 3/4 for the organisation of project activities and 1/4 for the administrative management of ASTOVOT.
The languages of the project are French and then English. However, we recommend that volunteers who are not French-speaking have a basic knowledge of French before they arrive, as the official language of Togo is French. The vast majority of local volunteers and local communities have a very poor level of English.

Requirements

This project requires specific qualities from volunteers: motivation, patience, team spirit, solidarity, sharing and listening,

The Ahero Community Resource Center is a project that was initiated by CIVS in collaboration with the local community in 2014 with an aim to build and strengthen the community’s capacity to be self-reliant and to improve their living standards. The Centre achieves this by demonstrating how to utilize the locally available resources to develop the local community. The Center is providing diverse capacity-building programs such as:

Early Childhood Education Program: The centre runs a kindergarten with about 100 children aged between 3-7 years who are either vulnerable to poverty or orphans. The children get free education and meals at the school. In the evening they go back home where they stay with their caregivers or guardians.

ICT and Business Training: The center provides a community hub for access of free training in computer skills and work preparedness, especially to the youths.

This project encompasses greenhouses, open farm, poultry unit, fish ponds, etc.

Water and Sanitation Program: This project is focused on the treatment of tap water to become clean and safe for all domestic use in the community. The water is therefore connected in homesteads and sold at an economy-friendly and affordable fee as part of the income-generating activity for the center.

Disability program: The project supports People with Disabilities (PWDs) with few skills training like sign language, cloth making, agriculture, business training, ICT and work readiness, etc. as a way of promoting inclusivity in the community.

The Green world is an organization empowering communities through agribusiness and environmental conservation. The organization also runs rehabilitation and economic empowerment programs in prisons. The Green world is trying to make community members self-reliant through creation of green collar jobs within their locality to minimize rural-urban migration thus decongesting our slums hence creating healthier environment.
The community members are mobilized to plant trees as a way of combating climate change and increasing forest cover to conform to the government policy.
The Green World is also doing numerous activities in prisons to make inmates feel part of the society and give them new hope to start new life when they come out of prison.
There are communities hostile to members who are released from prison so we do re-integration of offenders into the community in liaison with local administration to make sure that the income-generating project started is successful and helpful to an individual as well as the community.
The organization is also involving the community in sporting activities to keep them busy and as a way of nurturing their talents hence creating cohesion and love within the community.

St. James Community Orphans School is a community owned school whose idea was conceived to the challenges that the community has been with over the years. For a long time, parents have passed on leaving their children to be orphans who are either total or partial. It is this regard the school has taken good care of most of these orphans since school opened its doors on the 9th January 2012 hitherto
St. James Community School is located in Mfangano Island, Homabay County in Kenya. It’s one of the many islands in Lake Victoria with several beaches. Being an island with many fishing beaches, it’s prone to a unique lifestyle that contributes to high prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS which leads to many orphans
St. James School is addressing three major problems
4. Free education for these orphans

THEME: Youth Entrepreneurship and Leadership Development
Description of the Problem/Challenges
Challenges Facing Youth in Kenya: Below are some risk factors that affect entrepreneurship development in particular:
Rites of Passage: The absence of rites of passage means that youth are no longer well prepared for adulthood by the traditional means of providing youth with mentors who give them advice to equip them for adulthood;
Education: Suitability of education/vocational training for the labor market. There is limited access to secondary schools and alternative forms of education are lacking. There is also a need for life skills training in the education curriculum. At present, students are trained just to pass exams;
Inequality/regional disparity: There is inequality in many fields, and often this has a regional aspect. Youth in certain geographical regions are marginalized, with restricted access to opportunities that are available to other young persons. In
urban areas, poor youth and those living in slum areas have severely limited access to services and opportunities;
Society’s attitude towards youth: Youth face discrimination purely on the grounds of age. This is legitimatized by beliefs such as wisdom only comes with age, and that youth is merely a transition period. Society also perceives youth as irresponsible and troublemakers. This perception may contribute to difficulty in obtaining credit;
Expectations of youth: Society’s expectations of young people are not very clear. A gap in expectations has opened between what parents and older generations expect of youth on the one hand, and the expectations of youth themselves (influenced by their peers, and the media, etc.). Society’s expectations of youth may overshadow personal expectations and overwhelm youth. There is also an assumption that white-collar jobs are best and little encouragement is offered to youth to take up blue-collar jobs;
Displacement: Especially in slum areas, the demolition of homes has displaced many youths. Others were rendered homeless by the politically inspired ethnic clashes around election time in the 1990s. Homes on proposed road routes, close to power lines and railway tracks are being demolished. The social consequences, both short and long term, of such displacement are severe;
Policies: Gaps in, and unsuitability of, existing policy can be cited, along with important problems of implementation. Absence of youth participation in actual decision-making or implementation of policies affecting them was also cited. Youth are merely used as tokens in the policy formulation process;
Corruption: Corruption can be cited as one of the major risk factors affecting youth. It results in unequal access to resources. It is especially cited as a problem when youth are trying to establish businesses. Those who lack money to bribe have difficulty in getting assistance to set up their businesses;
Transition: Kenya is undergoing transition in many areas and this affects youth particularly. For example, there is a transition from an agrarian to an information based society, yet knowledge is not keeping up with the changes. Changes in social expectations are also resulting in confusion. Children are obliged to take on the roles of adults when households are decimated by HIV/AIDS. The influence and support of the extended family is also declining;
Choice of Role Models: Negative role models tend to be elevated. There is a dearth of positive models for leadership roles, exacerbated by the negative and corrupt image of leaders projected by the media. Parents, too, may often present negative role models in alcoholism and violence. The media glorifies negative role models, such as drug barons and advertisements for alcohol glamorize risky behavior.
