Work

All summer camps are held under one common theme, though every camp has its own focus within which everyday activities for youngsters are organized. Each day of the camp program has a special topic to be discussed and a related activity to work out the outcome. There is also a creative and interactive presentation of a country-participant every day to introduce general and interesting facts about the country as well as cultural customs and national traditions to schoolchildren. The standard number of days in a shift is 10 plus 1 optional Saturday, and there is a special agenda on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th camp days (camp introductory and final events, the mid-camp event, the day outside Tallinn). Every camp is thoroughly documented. The related activities suitable to support topic discussions and country presentations are as follows: various intellectual and sport games for youngsters, creative team projects like posters and sculptures or board-games, pieces of amateur drama or other types of performances, excursions and workshops, playing the games and music popular in the countries the volunteers represent, teaching their songs or folk dances, etc. There are 4 camp shifts during this summer project, 10-11 days length with an opportunity for kids/teens to join every Monday. Every shift has an option for different ages from 10 to 16 years old. All of them are day camps that are held in Tallinn. The working language is English. A number of volunteers working with schoolchildren in one camp may vary from 2 to 8 (both long-term volunteers for the whole summer and short-term volunteers who may join for 2 or 4 weeks); they work in pairs with one of the camp groups of 10-12 teens and change the groups every 2-3 days. Based on the previous year, we expect a number of kids/teens participants in one camp shift as up to 40 split into 2-4 camp groups; the local participants are mainly youngsters from minority groups of Tallinn whose family s languages include Russian.Based on described above, the work and duties of the volunteer include the following: prepare and facilitate topic discussions and camp activities for smaller teams of youngsters as well as larger all-camp events, support and lead youngsters in their work on team projects; help the youngsters and other volunteers in their performances and country presentations; assist the program leader implementing camp activities and trainings for other volunteers; work on the documenting camp events and support the local staff in their work with an international team of volunteers i organizing folders with working materials, making on-line reports and advert, making analysis, compiling the camp albums and leaflets, providing feedback. Based on the shifts, other work will include taking turn in assisting with catering and taking care of other volunteers, staying on overnight securing the international teenagers who are accommodated at school and accommodation site access, managing their arrivals

Accomodation and food

There are 2 options possible (which are the subject to availability):1) The premises of The Language School In Down-Town located on the 4th and 5th floors of a business building in the city centre. In summer time, a part of the school is reserved for the volunteers accommodation that includes several separate dormitory bedrooms, equipped kitchen, a small dining area, a large shower area and two separate toilet cabins. Bed linen, pillows and blankets will be provided, so you do NOT need to bring a sleeping bag unless you want so. For the reasons of security, volunteers will be issued only one set of keys. To facilitate a smooth and safe environment at school during the off-hours, the entrance to the school must be kept closed at all times. The access to the school accommodation will be managed by long-term volunteers or school staff. Please be aware that between 01:00 a.m. and 09:00 a.m. the access to the building will be closed. You will need to organize your own overnight stay if you wish to spend time in the city between the aforesaid hours. Catering will be organized by the school on an agreement with the volunteers (selection of times, meals - provided or volunteers cook, etc.)2) A furnished shared apartment in the residential area of Tallinn. The apartment has three-four dormitory bedrooms and all necessary facilities, and it takes about 20 minutes to get to the city center by public transport. Public transport cards will be provided. Volunteers will cook their breakfast meals themselves (food for a standard European breakfast will be provided); dinner meals will be served at school between 18:00 and 19:00; lunches will be organized for the whole camp (including kids/teens) in the city centre.

Work

Work together with local kids with fewer opportunities to create and learn together about and from each other. The main activity will be holding creating workshops and doing renovation work in the local community centre.

Volunteers will have a chance to understand the civil sector in Hungary and the social reality of people living in poverty, not only as spectators but as active participants working towards social change. The program will consist of team-building activities, creative and multicultural workshops delivered to and by the volunteers with local young people, interactive programs to get to know the area together and some renovation work on a community house. Campfire, common music and board games are indispensable to the program.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be accomodated in tents, or in the house of the organisation on mattresses. Multiple toilets and showers are indoors. Camp leaders and volunteers will pay attention to having a responsible, local, and balanced diet. The team will cook in turns with the help of local camp leaders and youth workers.

Location and leisure

The camp will take place in Pécs, which has a rich historical and cultural heritage, and we will make sure that you have time to explore that. Pécs is a lively city with many options for gastronomy, cultural or music programs and lively nightlife. The location is surrounded by mountains, a rich area with forest, hills, wildlife, and an overall beautiful scenery.

Project hosted by

Élmény Tár Tanoda is an organization working with children coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their mission is to open up the world for their target group and raise awareness about the opportunities surrounding them. This camp brings local youth together with youngsters from all over the world, providing a chance to broaden their perspective, become more open to the world outside their own community, to learn about acceptance and cooperation. We see this grand, shared international summer camp as a great way of serving our vision for the children and young people around us.

The Centre for asylum seekers in Rixensart is an open centre for people who have asked for international protection in Belgium. Its main tasks are to feed, accommodate and provide social and medical aid to asylum-seekers. The residents stay in the centre during the first stage of the procedure (4 months at least). Each resident is encouraged to take FLE (French as a foreign language) classes and all children are enrolled in school. The center hosts 185 people (young mothers with their child(ren), isolated people and families). The center is located at the residencial area of Rixensart. The aim of the workcamp is to encourage intercultural meetings between the volunteers and the residents of the center, and to offer leisure activities to the residents.

Work

The Holznagelhausen adventure playground is a vacation program run by the municipality of Veitshöchheim. Together with other volunteers, you will look after 200 children aged 6 to 12 for two weeks on a large site in 14 groups. You will build wooden huts, offer sports and workshops (from soccer to baseball, from baking pizzas in your own clay oven to handicrafts and educational games). There will be lots of fun together. You can contribute your ideas and skills, learn how to run a youth project, experience working in a large team, learn new languages and make lots of new friends.

Accomodation and food

You cook together. Money for the food shopping is provided to you. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any allergies when registering.
Shared rooms in the Friends-of-Nature House "Am Kalten Brunnen" in Veitshöchheim.

Location and leisure

In Veitshöchheim there is a very nice outdoor pool, boat trips on the Main and lots of nice people to meet. In 10 minutes by train, you can be in Würzburg with its beautiful sights (e.g. castle, Käppele, Residenz) as well as shopping, cinemas, cafés and nightlife. The surrounding area has a climbing garden, a leisure park, a go-kart track, youth clubs of all kinds, recreational areas, bicycle and skating paths. You can also visit the big cities of Nuremberg or Frankfurt at the weekend. So just come and have a look!

The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education.
