Work

Volunteer work:
Being an alternative hostel, the work carried out will be mainly hotel work:
- creation and implementation of activities with the public (exhibitions, debates, visits, karaoke, etc.);
- helping with the association’s sustainability initiatives (reducing food waste, permaculture, etc.);
- helping with the smooth running of the service (occasional help with washing up and cleaning the rooms);
- helping to welcome users and running the bar;
- 1 or 2 weekend services (either Saturday or Sunday) may be requested.

Food waste reduction plan tasks:
- observation of the quantities of food waste produced during production;
- observance of the quantities served or taken at self-service by users;
- participation in awareness-raising activities: ex bread urn,...;
- weighing of garbage cans at the end of meals;
- assistance in the creation of information panels.

Accomodation and food

About the accommodation:
Single room - shower/toilet shared with the second volunteer.
Services: access to the kitchen of the users-wifi-access to the laundry (washer-dryer).

About the food:
Morning: breakfast (majority of organic products).
Other meals: the volunteer has to buy and cook his own food, there is a kitchen available.

Location and leisure

About the project location:
The project takes place at the hostel (annual occupancy rate: 85%), the hostel is located in the city centre of Brussels, a public and multicultural city.

About the leisure activities possible:
- Visits of European institutions;
- city tour (free guided tour organized every day);
- cultural visits (museums, exhibition, etc.);
- relaxation (cafés, concerts, etc.).

The non-profit association "Les auberges de jeunesse" was founded in 1933. Its aim is to promote the social aspect, interculturality, to participate in the development of young people, to contribute to their education, and to develop a spirit of citizenship and responsibility, as well as to encourage youth travel.

For these purposes, the non-profit organisation does special actions such as:
- creating, managing and running a network of youth hostels, meeting and accommodation centres and involving young people in hostel activities;
- creating and maintaining an atmosphere of conviviality among all the guests who will be welcomed there without distinction of age, colour, religion, nationality, language, sex or opinion;
- making the network of youth hostels known among young people, whether Belgian or worldwide;
- placing all its actions within a framework of sustainable development and respect for the environment.

Work

Volunteers will decide, according to what they prefer to do, what they will do. They can either take part in the pedagogical project or work on the farm. Those who will work on the pedagogical project will supervise groups. Those who prefer manual work will work on the farm (feed animals, clean the barn). Volunteers must be aware that working in a farm can be very physical and tiring. Working with animals is a concrete job (feeding animals, cleaning the barn) and not a romantic one (a cow is not a nice stuffed animal). Volunteers will always be supervised, they will not be alone. They will help adults who work on the site. Workers will teach them how to do the different tasks. The aim is that they slowly become more and more independent. Work schedule will depend on the moments. The farm works 24h a day. At some moments, there will be work for more than 8 hours. In summer, there are sessions for children. During those sessions, children will have activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m (walking in the forest, taking care of the animals, making bread). After 4 p.m., it will be necessary to organize games, dinner, showers, night walks and breakfast. Children are between 3 and 15 years old (for those who do not stay there at night) and between 6 and 15 years old (for those who stay at night).

Accomodation and food

About the accommodation:
Volunteers must sleep in a tent during the summer (with or without access to showers and toilets). They must bring their tent, their mattress. It is possible to sleep in a residential center, but it costs about 350 euros. The participation fee per day / per person will vary according to the option chosen by the volunteer.

About the food:
The volunteer has to buy and cook his own food, there is a kitchen available.

Our partner association is in Stoumont, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. It is a quiet village, surrounded by forests. It is the perfect place to go for a walk in the forest. It has already worked with volunteers. Each year, about fifteen interns come and help on the farm. They make it available to the organization. Stoumont is a very special place in the province of Liège. Difference in altitude within the municipality is around 400 meters and it has many water sources. This is the perfect place to really get to know. It is a very small town with very few activities.

About the leisure activities possible:
Computers, cameras can be kept in a secured room in the main building. Volunteers will have access to the internet.
The project takes place in a remote village, the ideal spot for those who enjoy forest walks.

Le Fagotin is located in Stoumont, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. It is a quiet village, surrounded by forests. It is the perfect place to go for a walk in the forest. It has already worked with volunteers. Each year, about fifteen interns come and help on the farm. The farm building belongs to the family. They make it available to the organization. They have bought another building in which work will be done. It will be converted into a residential center.

Since its creation in 1995, the Fagotin association has progressively developed its activities until it became a major educational and touristic actor in the Belgian Ardennes. Today, the association is a combination of a «Nature Center», an «Animation Farm» and a «Meeting and Accommodation Center». Their values are centered around four key notions: CITIZENSHIP, SUSTAINABILITY, SOLIDARITY, GOODWILL.

Both in summer and winter, the Fagotin team, made up of experienced animators, offers camps, field trips, workshops, walks, guided tours, training sessions, meetings, etc. in order to promote the wonders of Wallonia’s natural heritage to everyone, especially to young people.

Usually (out of the COVID period), the team is made up of 16 employees who welcome more than 10,000 people each year.

Requirements

Volunteers need to bring clothes to go outside. Clothes that can be dirtied and that are necessary. It is important to bring boots or walking shoes, a rain jacket and sweaters (it can be really cold and/or rain much). It is an isolated village. It is the perfect place for those who like walking in the forest.

It is recommended to be able to speak a few words of French or to be willing to learn French.

Work

The role of volunteers:
Volunteers are invited to take part in a range of activities linked to:
● the introduction to and the management of a historic permaculture park (vegetable garden, biodiversity, etc.);
● organizing cultural activities;
● the animation of our social network;
● the participatory eco-construction workcamp;
● the research into the fascinating history of our site: the mysterious appearance and disappearance of monumental greenhouses in the 19th century;
● the digitization of the Serge Pahaut book collection, a famous Belgian mythologist;
● the work on the archives of Paul van der Belen, pioneer of peace volunteers for international cooperation.

Accomodation and food

About the accommodation:
There are two options for accommodation:
A/ in a room with a shared bathroom;
B/ from spring onwards, light accommodation in the middle of the park (caravan, tent), dry toilet, solar shower.

About the food:
For food, there are also two options:
A/ volunteers are fed by the hosts (included in the participation fees);
B/ volunteers have a kitchen at their disposal and manage their own meals.

About the project location:
The park known today as the Orangeries de Bierbais is located in Hévillers, a section of the commune of Mont-Saint-Guibert, in the Walloon Region of the province of Walloon Brabant in Belgium. Until the late 1980s, the Orangeries de Bierbais were part of the Château de Bierbais park. In the 19th century, this 2.5-hectare part of the park was home not only to a collection of remarkable fruit and ornamental trees, but also to internationally renowned monumental heated greenhouses, the Bierbais greenhouses, within English-style gardens designed by landscape architect Charles-Henri Petersen, who lived in Bierbais until his death in 1859.

Our partner association is located in a park known in the 19th century for its world- renowned monumental greenhouses, 30km south of Brussels. So impressive in 1828, that its landscape architect went on to design the magnificent Botanique in Brussels. We created a "third place" in the park, where the orangeries that framed the largest greenhouse still stand. Today, it is a place where creativity, reflection, exchange of knowledge, sharing of experience and solidarity - both local and international - come together. On site, we organize residencies for researchers and artists, concerts, exhibitions, screenings, workshops, meetings with the public, performances, permaculture initiations, etc. Also because "poetry is a weapon charged with the future" (Gabriel Celaya). And because permaculture is the key to linking aesthetics with the new pages of agriculture, ecology and social issues.

Work

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing.
Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller volunteer work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact.
One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:
1. A day trip to the Hot River area, combined with a cleanup or work with an environmental project in the area, or
2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.

Accomodation and food

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a geothermal power plant, a local fauna and/or flora exhibition or an outdoor Icelandic culture museum. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, as well as availability or restrictions of our partner organisations.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on April 25 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 350 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. The fee includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day and one trip combined with the trash collection activity (Hot River or Reykjanes).
Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on April 25 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own.
Some excursions (e.g. to the Golden Circle and/or South Shore) can be arranged at discount fares if there is free time after the camp workshops/sessions.
Weather may be cold or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and/or waterproof clothes) and good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.

Work

Our host is a non-profit organization called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland.
The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses, weeding, planting and harvesting vegetables, such as tomatoes, and cucumbers; Making tea made out of Icelandic herbs.
The work will also include Weed control & Gardening. Environmental work on the property (Renovation when needed). The agriculture that is practiced in the center is organic/bio.

Main Activities, but not limited to are; Agriculture: cultivating soil; planting; raising, and harvesting crops. Horticulture: growing fruits, vegetables, and plants. Renovation around the property when needed. During winter the work might include snowplowing.

The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses.
Working hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a coffee break in the morning and a lunch break.

Volunteers will be staying in the house of The Natural Health Association in Hveragerði. The house is within the medical compound and has 5 double rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and a common area

Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. Golden Circle is Included in the camp fee!

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.
The area around the house is also great for hiking. Don't go for high and steep mountains without a professional guide.

Work

The heart of the Sólheimar ideology is to give all individuals a fair chance and to maximize their potential. By focusing on individuals' possibility instead of their limitations, Sólheimar aims to create the space for each resident to take every opportunity that arises for each person to grow and develop.
Versatility is the strength of Sólheimar so people with special needs that reside here will always be the center of the community. This works through the idea of reverse integration: those without special needs adapt to the abilities of those who do, they can work together to make their community of an equal and sustainable one. The foundation of the ideology of Sólheimar derives from the visions and lifework of Sesselja herself.

The main work in this camp will be in forestry called Ölur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The work might involve work around the property painting or fixing things. During the winter volunteers will also have to help remove snow and keep the walk paths clear for the residents.
Working hours are 09.00 to 16.00 with one hour break for lunch and there are some coffee breaks as well.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

It is a community where people with or without special needs live and work together. Sólheimar is a pioneer of practicing organic farming. In Sólheimar there is an organically certified greenhouse, forestry, and arboretum. Other environmental-friendly projects in Sólheimar include geothermal energy and recycling.

We try to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet by cutting down our meat intake and we usually encourage volunteers to try more sustainable foods.

Work

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing.
Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller volunteer work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact.
One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:
1. A day trip to the Hot River area, combined with a cleanup or work with an environmental project in the area, or
2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.

Accomodation and food

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a geothermal power plant, a local fauna and/or flora exhibition or an outdoor Icelandic culture museum. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, as well as availability or restrictions of our partner organisations.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Work

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches.
Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.

Location and leisure

The accommodation is located 1 hour drive south-east from Reykjavík. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre where visitors can have a look at an extensive stone and stuffed animal collection. The house sits under Ingólfsfjall, The Mountain of Ingólfur, with a view to Eyjafjallajökull where the volcanic eruptions started in March and April 2010.
The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found spread around the area, which is a popular attraction among foreign and local visitors.
The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafés and bars.

The Awareness, Engagement & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action! One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline.
SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country.

Meeting time will be 13:00 (1:00 pm) on May 5th at SEEDS Office in Reykjavik.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 300 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. It includes accommodation, food and one trip to the Hot River area in Reykjadalur.
The fee does not include the transportation from Reykjavík to the camp and back, which costs EUR 30 one way or EUR 60 both ways. Meeting time will be 13:00 (1:00 pm) on May 5th at SEEDS Office in Reykjavik.

Work

Krýsuvík is part of the Reykjanes Geopark. It was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.
The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways by fighting erosion and revegetation of the land.

The first step is to nourish and revegetate the land with organic waste and planting trees. We will also monitor the growth of tree plantations from former years.

By the house are 5 large greenhouses. At first, the project will be focused on renovating these greenhouses to use them to plant and grow a large variety of vegetables and fruits for the volunteers of the organization.

Agriculture will take place both inside and outside of the greenhouses. We will welcome animals such as chickens and goats as part of the sustainable development of the camp.
The Geopark is protected and is crossed by several hiking paths. We can also work with the municipality to help them maintain the hiking path and protected areas nearby.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 600 m² and has 10 rooms for 3 to 4 people each. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 30.
Volunteers need to bring their sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge at the accommodation.

Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged!

Location and leisure

There are opportunities for fun all over Krýsuvík. From adventurous activities to well-known tourist attractions, this delightful area packs a punch. From great hiking trails among various landscapes (geothermal area, lake, beach, mountain), to bird watching or cultural visits in Reykjavik, you have many activities to choose from. The closeness to nature is always within reach!
It can be tempting to get closer to touch the hot springs but make sure to stay away from them and on the marked path as the heat is 80-100 degrees Celsius.
You should not go for high or steep mountains without a professional guide. Keep in mind this is a highly active geothermal area.

The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. It can be a presentation, a game, or a theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Work

WF Iceland publishes a magazine called UNA, where people can read about the life of the Organization & learn through the articles written by the participants about different Environmental topics.
The aim of this project is to publish a monthly magazine created by the participants. This is a great opportunity to get creative! The design will depend entirely on you and the group, following our guidelines and requirements. The magazine consists of 2 parts: firstly the articles, written by the camp and the second part is about their experience in Iceland.
The participants will create the magazine from top to bottom, choosing the design, photos, and articles; Picking the Topic, Choosing the cover article, Pictures/Interviews, Write body articles, Find the cover image, Design of masthead, Incorporate graphics, and Decide on feature articles, Create a table of contents, A personal note from camp.
The group will take photos, create videos and conduct interviews with volunteers, local hosts, and people living in the area.
At the end of the project, the camp will prepare the final version of the magazine and publish it online. The outcome will be published in ISSUU.

Work

This camp has a variety of activities. Our main activity is Beach Cleaning.

Beyond the sheer tonnage of trash removed, and probably more importantly, we feel that cleanups are the gateway for volunteers and people from all walks of life to become aware of the issue and feel empowered to take action. Through data collection, tracking item by item will create a moment of reflection that is truly invaluable.
A beach clean-up is also an opportunity to gather new data about the state of our coasts and the types of trash that pollutes them. By identifying the most harmful debris items, environmental groups can find ways to stop them from entering the ocean or being littered again on beaches

We work with the local community as well helping with the reforestation of the areas nearby.
Some days, when the weather conditions are not suitable, we will focus on renovation work; painting or fixing things around and inside the house.
We will upcycling garbage into art! While creating bookshelves out of driftwood or designing a chair with old tires and nets, your imagination is the limit!

Worldwide Friends Iceland is running a center of Environment & Sustainability near the crossroads to the West, South, and North of Iceland. The center is called BRÚ, and it is located in Hrutafjordur which is 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra, on the R1.
Keep in mind that is a 1-hour drive to the closest city (Borganes). Based just off the main road, we are not set in a town, therefore the only way to get around is by car. Brú's stunning surrounding countryside offers the perfect tonic to relax and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This camp has a variety of environmental protection activities. Our main activity will be to work in Forestry; managing, planting, fixing, conserving, and repairing forests, woodlands, and associated resources for human and environmental benefits.

We will also work in Beach Cleaning, Beyond the sheer tonnage of trash removed, and probably more importantly, we feel that cleanups are the gateway for volunteers and people from all walks of life to become aware of the issue and feel empowered to take action. Through data collection, tracking item by item will create a moment of reflection that is truly invaluable.

Some days, when the weather conditions are not suitable, we will focus on renovation work; painting or fixing things around and inside the house.
Just like us, our waste also deserves a second chance. We will upcycling garbage into art! While creating bookshelves out of driftwood or designing a chair with old tires and nets, your imagination is the limit!

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 300 m² and has 2 big dormitory rooms for 8 people each, 2 double rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 15.
Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge. Access to a washing machine.
Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged.

Location and leisure

Siglufjörður is a town of about 1,300 people, located in North Iceland. It is the northernmost town of the mainland. 5 hours drive from Reykjavik.
It is an area of spectacular natural beauty. The mountains and the fjords are awe-inspiring and the opportunities for outdoor activities and recreation are almost inexhaustible.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs.

This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

The area around the house is also great for hiking. Plan ahead, share your travel plans, stay on the trail, properly dispose of waste, leave areas as you found them, and do not approach or feed wildlife. Don't go for high and steep mountains without a professional guide.

Work

The main task is harvesting various berries and vegetables such as rhubarb, currants, raspberries, Japanese quince, then helping juice making and products packaging. But there is also weed control and fertilization with mulch in plantations, mowing grass, cutting branches, removal of bushes and wood chipping, assistance in the construction of various small buildings, vegetable beds and other necessary structures on the site, painting as well. And there is ongoing work of planting seeds. Working hours are 5-7 hours a day for 5 days a week. The exact work depends on season and partly on weather conditions.

Accomodation and food

Farm life conditions are simple. Sleeping is in a separate house in beds. Bed sheets, blankets and pillows are provided, so no need for sleeping bag. There is outdoor kitchen with all necessary equipment. Volunteers can make breakfast and lunch themselves, and dinner will be prepared by and taken with the family. Washing is in the sauna. There is a dry organic toilet. Volunteers have to take care of their surroundings by cleaning up after themselves.

Location and leisure

LocationThe farm is located in Kanepi municipality just 11km from Otepaa and 47km from Tartu. When coming from Tartu, choose a bus to Voru and get off at the Saverna stop. Buses stop there quite often, travel takes about 40 minutes. Also you can come through Otepaa. Knowing you arrival time and place hosts will pick you up from there. Bus information is on www.tpilet.ee or www.luxexpress.ee. The farm is located in the tiny village of Aiaste. It is important to understand that it is calm and quiet place (there are no events in the village). But with nice weather, it is possible to see deer in the field, foxes in a strawberry bed and storks. While sitting by the fire at night, enjoy stars in the sky and listen to the nature sounds by animals such as badgers or raccoons.Leisure timeIt is possible to swim, make a fire, play volleyball, disc golf and other games or go for mushroom picking if you like it. There is a swimming lake in Valgjarv 4 km away. You can use various hiking trails. If interested you can visit nearby farms where you can get to know horses, sheep and other animals and see many other interesting things. For many years EstYES has been cooperating with eco-farms around Estonia demonstrating solidarity and respect to their work and supporting local people, who keep agricultural traditions and develop eco-farming in Estonia. Organic farm Kingu is one of them. This is a berry, fruit and vegetable micro-farm in the South Estonia. The main berry crops are raspberries, various currants, gooseberries, Japanese quince, garlic and rhubarb. Everything is grown in an environmentally sustainable way using straw and hay. The farm promotes sustainable lifestyle, and this camp is proposed for volunteers who appreciate and share its values, want to learn more and to help hard working people in country side.

Special requirementsYou have to be open-minded and be ready to adapt to the simple conditions of the rural life being ready to do farm work which can be hard sometimes. Work

Our host is a non-profit organization called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland.
The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will be working in the greenhouses, weeding, planting and harvesting vegetables, such as tomatoes, and cucumbers; Making tea made out of Icelandic herbs.
The work will also include Weed control & Gardening. Environmental work on the property (Renovation when needed). The agriculture that is practiced in the center is organic/bio.

Main Activities, but not limited to are; Agriculture: cultivating soil; planting; raising, and harvesting crops. Horticulture: growing fruits, vegetables, and plants. Renovation around the property when needed. During winter the work might include snowplowing.

The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses.
Working hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a coffee break in the morning and a lunch break.

Work

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Create!
Create artwork using recycled materials and discover the importance of recycling and its impact on ocean life. Volunteers will explore and find inspiration from the natural world by making art using material collected from Beach Cleaning around Iceland. We will engage in more process-oriented individual and collaborative projects while connecting to Mother Earth.

You will be working along with other art enthusiasts. The work will depend on the skills and knowledge of each volunteer.

During the project, you will be working on your art piece, whether it is a sculpture made out of microplastics or a couture dress made out of fishing nets. you will have guidance from the camp leader. The group will present their work during the openings of the exhibition on the weekends.

Accomodation and food

The house is located 45 minutes by bus from City Hall on the outskirts of Reykjavik. It is a nice cozy place on top of the hill with a nice view. The house can host up to 10 people. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, 1 toilet, 1 Bathroom, a living room, 2 mixed dormitories, a Greenhouse, and a tool room.
