The Thai New Year season called “Songkran” will be held on 13-15 April. Songkran is an important custom for Thai families, community and religion. It is also very popular with visitors. Thai people will prepare themselves for the beginning of the New Year by cleaning their houses and preparing to celebrate the festival in the local temples and communities. There are many activities during the festival including the water splashing, the bathing rite for Buddha images and the monks, and the performances for all 3 days. Moreover, local foods that it is not easy to find on a normal day will be provided by the local people. Everyone can join in the celebration and festival. VSA has organized this work camp to support the festival and celebrate Thai traditional New Year with the international participants by collaboration with the local temple and community. This year, VSA hopes that we can continue to help the locals prepare for the festival, and exchange the culture.

Work

During those 2 weeks, we want to organize 3 children camps at DaLaa Voluntary Service Community in Kok Riang village. Each camp would take 3 days and involve different Thai children from 7 to 13 years old. We will keep 1 or 2 days in between to relax, evaluate, and prepare the next one. The activities and camp’s daily life organized by volunteers should be strongly connected with our community values, authenticity, responsibility and inclusion. Besides, they should allow children to be in a harmonious and safe environment. English language is poorly understood by the children, so we’ll have to find possibilities to overcome this challenge with the help from our coordinator and Thai volunteers.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will sleep in the tents and small huts. There will be thin mattresses, yoga mats, pillows, and mosquito nets. There are basic toilets, showers, and a kitchen. We will take time to cook together. Volunteers will be welcome to cook their own food using the ingredients available there. (No oven, only a gas and woks or pans).

Project hosted by

Volunteers will be arranging creative activities with students. They will be supervised by the teachers. Depending on the volunteers' skills, they will be proposed to organize activities with each class from Grade 1 to Grade 9 twice a week (1-hour session). The idea is that 1 session is more about English language while the other one is free to decide. Outside the school, a few villagers are willing to invite volunteers to learn about the local fisherman lifestyle on Songkhla Lake and organize other common activities.

There are some small grocery shops in the village and a lot of fish from the fishermen. Local people eat rice (or noodles) 3 times a day with side dishes like curries, omelettes, local leaves and vegetables.

Location and leisure

During free time, some villagers gain some extra income from making and selling local desserts and fruit preservation, for instance.

Intercultural and Language (ICL) – Nakhon Ratchasima, learning and sharing the intercultural and language still are the main purpose. Volunteers will share and exchange culture, language, and knowledge with the local community and students in the school.
English as the global language and intercultural learning are important for local Thai people to understand and be for global citizens. English is also the gateway to open mind and knowledge. The project was created by VSA Thailand and has been successful for eight years. Former volunteers came to give the opportunity for children in schools and the local community. Many local people improved their English skills through exchanging with international volunteers, or at least they try to speak the English language more and dare to face and work with the foreigner even though they cannot speak English. Moreover, volunteers’ activities impacted the local community. They used to stay lively and trusty with the foreigner. Local people have a chance to learn, accept, and adopt the ways of life with the different cultures.
