The Seven Strong Men is another name for the Manpupuner rock formations. It is a geological monument in Pechoro-Ilychskiy Natural Reserve, which represents a set of 7 stone pillars located west of the Ural mountains. Their name in the Komi language means Mountain of idols . The height of the rocks varies between 30 and 42 metres. About 200 million years ago at the location of the stone pillars there were high mountains. Rain, snow, wind, frost, and heat gradually eroded the mountains. It s a unique place which is further than 100 km from any habitat village or roads. Currently, this place is considered one of the 7 wonders of Russia which brings a lot of illegal tourists who destroy the soil, making new walking paths which makes more marshes and destroys local flora.

Arbeit

Melikhovo Estate Museum has been welcoming local volunteers for many years but this summer the estate will host an international volunteering workcamp for the first time. The volunteers will mostly work in the garden and their tasks will include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, cleaning and renovating a wooden fence. Cultural life in the museum is vibrant and the volunteers will have an opportunity to participate in the charity literary and musical marathon “Never get tired of doing good!” (even on stage, if they wish), as well as in other events.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Volunteers will stay in a local hotel with beds and common showers. Participants will cook for themselves. Locals are open to share Russian traditional recipes with the volunteers.

Lage und Freizeit

Birds singing, sweet smells in the air and incredible quietness all around – in the estate you are certain to feel that you’ve gone back in time and you are Anton Chekhov’s guest. The museum employees will be glad to teach the volunteers to play croquet and other games popular in Chekhov’s time. But it is not going to be too quiet! The volunteers will have a common room and an outdoor space near the house to spend time together, and the meadows and forests around to go hiking and have picnics. On Saturdays, local theatre stages Chekhov’s short stories and plays. The volunteers will have an opportunity to visit all the branches of the museum both in the estate and in Chekhov (town named after Chekhov), and other local sights including the famous 16th century monastery Davidova Pustyn.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The project is hosted by Melikhovo Estate Museum of Anton Chekhov, located 60 km from Moscow. It is in Melikhovo that Chekhov, famous playwright and master of short story, wrote more than 40 of his masterpieces, including “The Seagull” and “Uncle Vanya”. He was not only a prolific writer but also a practicing doctor and a philanthropist, and besides the manor house, the museum includes the schools that he built for local peasants, the post office that he opened and the medical station imitating the one where he consulted the locals. Thus, the visitors can get a glimpse of the life in the estate at the end of the 19th century. http://en.chekhovmuseum.com

Arbeit

Since 2008 Perspective Camps (Перспектива) have been uniting volunteers from Russia and abroad in their sincere desire to help local communities of Yaroslavl Region in renovating social infrastructure. Over the last years the volunteers have renovated schools, kindergartens, orphanages, elderly people’s apartments, parks (for the 1000 anniversary of Yaroslavl), monuments, churches and social rehabilitation centers. This year you will continue this work in Myshkin, together with a group of young Russian volunteers. You will participate in such activities as removing vegetation, cleaning off old paint, painting, wall-papering and other minor repairs. You will work 6 hours a day (with a lunch-break), 5 days a week.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Lodging, food and excursions are provided by the local host. Volunteers will live in a dormitory, located not far from the work place, toilet and bathroom on the floor. We will have a bus to reach the working place if necessary. Meals 3 times a day will be provided in the canteen. Alcohol is prohibited in our camp.

Lage und Freizeit

This year the camp will be held in Myshkin (Мышкин), the smallest town of Yaroslavl Region, located on the Volga River. Tourists love it, despite of its size, and come weekly by cruise ships and cars to see its 19th century architecture, admire Volga views and, most of all, to visit its lovely museums devoted to mice (“мышь” means a mouse in Russian), valenki (traditional felt boots), linen, dolls, retro vehicles and vodka. This camp is perfect for those who want to find a lot of friends in Russia and make a huge difference for the local community! You’ll live and work with volunteers from Yaroslavl Region, so whatever your goals are – to practice or learn Russian, to understand mysterious Russian soul, to learn how Russians live outside of Moscow – this camp is the right choice! Besides, Perspective Camps are specialized in renovating public facilities in small towns and their work is always meaningful and much appreciated by the locals. Russian and international volunteers will have a common area to spend time together in the evenings. All the Russian volunteers speak English at least a bit, but there will always be a camp-leader to facilitate communication and suggest some activities. The trip to Yaroslavl with a guided tour in English will be organized. Yaroslavl is the centre of the region and one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the Golden Ring of Russia.

Arbeit

Help with restoration of wooden buildings of the XIX-early XX centuries – cleaning of facades, priming, painting. Various skills could be obtained depending on the area of working: cleaning wood from the old paint, priming, painting, plastering, working with hand and power tools (grinder, angle grinders), painting. All works will be supervised by specialists. Working hours are in the evening, approximately from 4 to 9 p.m.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation in rooms in both locations, you should bring the bed linen. The budget is allocated for food, self-cooking in groups.

Lage und Freizeit

This particular program consists of two parts in two different locations: one week in Samara and one week in Buzuluk. Samara is a beautiful city on the bank of Volga river. It is possible to go swimming on the public beach, make small boat trips, visit museums, concerts and various excursions. What's for Buzuluk, this town is famous for the monuments of architecture of the early XX century. For participants many activities will be prepared, including trip to the national Park "Buzuluksky Bor", a tour to the horse farm with riding and tasting Mare's milk, excursion to an old church, etc. Two cities – Samara and Buzuluk – between which there is 3 hours by train. In both cities volunteers will be met by the host organization.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Tom Sawyer Fest got its name from a hero of Mark Twain's most famous book. The boy painted a fence so inspiredly that everyone around begged him to let them paint it too. That's the main idea of the festival - to inspire good changes in the city. The festival began in 2015 in Samara, now it has 27 participating cities. It brings together enthusiastic people in an effort to restore wooden buildings that lacked cultural heritage object status. Volunteers carefully take away old paint, clean the wood, replace shabby decorations and in the end give the house a new colour. That helps to make local people believe that with their own hands they can make the city more beautiful and nice to live in. All restoration activities are made by volunteers only with help from sponsors and fundraising.

Weitere Infos

Please note that volunteers will cover the ticket price themselves (for train Samara-Buzuluk the cost is around 10 euros). Tom Sawyer Fest workcamp 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrI9MrL2Bb8&t=3s

Arbeit

The project aims at assisting in preservation of the World Heritage site by doing environmental physical work at the Botanical Garden that is a part of the Solovki heritage. Volunteers themselves will learn about history and uniqueness of the Solovetsky Islands Ensemble and help enrich biodiversity of the Islands’ ecosystem. During the project volunteers will work at the Botanical Garden founded by the monks in 1822, namely: digging ditches, plant, weed and fertilize trees, herbs and flowers of cultural and historical significance (more on that will be provided in the information list). Additionally, international volunteers are welcome to organise raising awareness activities on the importance of heritage preservation among locals, tourists and visitors.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Volunteers will live in tents in a well-equipped camping of the garden. Food will be provided; volunteers will cook by themselves as a group: every day we will have a cooking team, which will cook on the fire; products will be provided. Please, bring your sleeping bag!

Lage und Freizeit

The Solovetsky archipelago comprises of six islands in the western part of the White Sea less then 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. They have been inhabited since the 5th century B.C. and important traces of human presence from as far back as the 5th millennium B.C. can be found there. Since 15th century Solovetsky Archipelago with its monastery was a religious citadel of the Russian North, there are several churches dating back to 16th-19th century.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is organized in cooperation with Solovki State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, which is well-known due to Solovetsky Monastery. Since 15th century Solovetsky Archipelago with its monastery was a religious citadel in the Russian North before being closed by Soviet government in 1920 and turned into a special Soviet prison and labour camp (1926–1939), the Gulag, - for some people the site still reminds of this horrible period in USSR history, a symbol of Stalin’s repressions.
