Many parts of the communities were destroyed to dust and many families lost their houses and properties during the 2015 earthquake. This massive earthquake not only left people poor but many people are now homeless and living in very cold and small temporary shelters. This tragic moment made VIN realize that the reconstruction of houses of poor families, public properties, religious temples, and cultural heritage sites should be a priority when supporting the people in the community. After the devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015, the situation in Nepal is desperate! VIN has been continuously involved in Relief work, which is divided into three phases; Rapid response / Rescue, Rehabilitation, Reconstruction & Sustainability. VIN has already completed two phases, and we are now in the Reconstruction & Sustainability phase. This is a long term phase. We will be working until the reconstruction is complete in our affected communities. This project aims to support very poor and needy families to reconstruct earthquake resistance houses. Objectives: • To support the rebuilding of Earthquake resistance homes for the most needy and affected families of VIN’s working communities. • To demolish damaged structure, clear debris and manage it. Work / Activities: • Support the victims to rebuild earthquake resistant homes. • Demolish the damaged structure, clear debris and manage it. • Educate on safe earthquake resistant houses.

Project information: This work camp focuses on CHILD DEVELOPMENT. The Children’s Development Programme aims to protect the rights of all children by providing them access to education, life skills, health and hygiene. This is done through Children’s Clubs, Early Child Development Programmes, School Attendance services and Child Care. Even nowadays, schools focus very much on literacy and theoretical learning. At home, parents have very busy work schedules and have limited financial resources which means that during school breaks they can’t go on holidays and often need to rely on themselves to fill their time constructively. This leaves little space for exploring creativity and different innovative ways of learning in a structured environment. We are keen to make a difference in children’s lives and explore their talents. That is why these work camps are essential to provide children aged 5 to 12 years of age with ideas, life skills as well as developmental opportunities in a fun and creative environment. OBJECTIVES/ AIM: The main aim for this work camp is to arrange emotionally and socially stimulating activities for children aged 5 to 12 years of age in order to improve English skills, creative thinking and personal development. Your placement and activities: In this work camp, national and international volunteers (with staff guidance) will facilitate different groups and activities, with the main aim to: • Develop and facilitate unique activities for children aged 5 to 12 years which will support social, emotional, physical and mental wellbeing during their vacation time. This will include activities related to sports and exercise, drawing, colouring, painting, arts & crafts, singing, dancing, drama, music, exploring the environment with walks and hiking. • Promote friendships and solidarity amounts their peers through team building activities. • Provide an opportunity for the children to understand different cultures by learning about their own one as well as the traditions of local and international volunteers. This can include English language teaching. These are just some examples but we rely on volunteers’ ideas to make the camp as fun as possible. There will be one rest day in the middle of your work camp. If you’ve volunteering at a school, the Saturdays will be a rest day also.

Project information: In 2015, Nepal was hit by an earthquake of the 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. 9,000 people lost their lives and 22,000 people were injured. The earthquake didn’t only mean loss of lives but it also destroyed thousands of houses and left people without shelter or just temporary accommodations. VIN mobilised rapid response and rescue teams, and is now focussing on the reconstruction and sustainability of homes. OBJECTIVES/ AIM: The main aim of this work camp is to support families struck by the earthquake in 2015 and help to rebuild houses and repair damaged structures. Your placement and activities: This role is physically demanding. So we need fit and able volunteers, who can help us rebuilding earthquake resistant houses by demolishing damaged structures, recycling and reusing bricks, clear debris, dig foundations and help building new homes. VIN has a selection process to support the most vulnerable and needy families. There will be one rest day in the middle of your work camp. If you’ve volunteering at a school, the Saturdays will be a rest day also.

Project information: Part 1: GARBAGE MANAGEMENT: Protecting the environment has never been more pressing as today. The increasing amount of garbage has become a major challenge in many communities in Nepal because it pollutes the streets, rivers and countryside. If waste isn’t properly managed, it can not only harm the environment, but also people’s health. This project is designed to generate a change in the communities of Kavresthali and Okharpauwa with a theme of “Better Environment – Better Tomorrow”. Part 2: Celebration of Holi Festival Holi is known as the Festival of Colours and it’s one of the most popular festivals in Nepal. It celebrates the victory of good over evil and the coming of spring. Nepalese and tourists get involved in this festival, were dry powder and coloured water is thrown and splashed at each other to express blessings and good wishes. Holi is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest. This is a time to celebrate with families but also in the open streets. 2 days before finishing the placement, volunteers will get involved in the preparations for Holi in their respective communities. OBJECTIVE/ AIM: The main aim for volunteers is to raise awareness about recycling and kitchen gardens with local communities in the outskirts of Kathmandu. This is part of the “Better Environment- Better Tomorrow” campaign. Your placement and activities: We need volunteers to collaborate with the communities of Kavresthali and Okharpauwa to raise awareness of waste management. This includes creating and delivering information sessions on recycling, composting, safe garbage disposal, minimising air pollution as well as organising community garbage collection days where everyone an get involved. Volunteers will also develop the concept of a kitchen garden and help implement it in people’s homes. We want volunteers to really be engaged in their communities and help with the preparations and celebrations of Holi. There will be one rest day in the middle of your work camp. If you’ve volunteering at a school, the Saturdays will be a rest day also.
