Project hosted by

The Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (South Limburg Steam Train Company) or ZLSM is a heritage railway operating from its main station of Simpelveld to Schin op Geul and Kerkrade in the south of the Netherlands. It also runs across the border from Simpelveld to Aachen-Vetschau and has an extensive collection of stock. The construction of the original Miljoenenlijn, as a part of the total railway trajectory in the south of Limburg, started in 1925 and was carried out by the Spoorwegbouwbedrijf from Utrecht, a subsidiary of the NS. Construction was difficult and expensive. For example, there is a constant threat of subsidence due to mining. To keep the height differences as small as possible, a lot of earth is moved in the hilly area. While the railway embankment in the Anselerbeek valley in Kerkrade will be raised 32 meters, the railway line between Kerkrade and Simpelveld will be 18 meters below ground level - so as not to have to rise and fall too much. To this day, the Miljoenenlijn is a railway monument of great cultural-historical value that still appeals to the imagination. For old and young! Everyone is always amazed.

Directions to meeting point

"Meeting point is railway Station Heerlen.
From there, travel by car / project bus directly to the residence, Scouting Simpelveld, at Sportlaan 1a 6369 VC Simpelveld. "

Volunteers will discuss the recreational program together with the camp leaders. For example they can explore the area by bike, go swimming, visit the city of Groningen, Westerbork transit camp (where Anne Frank was prisoned) and other places in the Netherlands.

Work

The main objectives of the activities is the contribution of the conservation of the National Park. Like all old, open cultural landscapes, the heathland requires targeted maintenance in order to continue to exist and provide a habitat for the typical species. This requires the targeted removal of overgrowth. As only certain plant species are removed, this is usually done by hand. This also protects the habitat, which is not accessible to machines.

Activities in the nearby nature reserves The Meinweg, e.g.
Nursing work, environmental protection and conservation in the Meinweg - revolving on the Ritzroder Dune or in the heathoors.
Nursing work in various wetland biotopes (waters in MG-Hardt and at the Nordpark)
Biotope maintenance measures in NSG Baggersee Vorster Busch

Activities at the nature protection station, e.g.:
Animal supply (2 times a day: feeding, giving water, checking whether everything is fine with the animals)
Maintenance work (pasture fences, bite protection of the trees, animal shelters, etc.)
Fruit harvest - depending on the yield and ripening period

Promotional activities for National Park Meinweg and Grenspark Maas-Schwalm-Nette
Daily posting of camp activities on Instagram and Facebook ….
Facilitate 3 press moments, for post in local journals and interview with a mayor.
Make a movie of the activities at the camp, as promotional material for SIW and IJGD.
Optional: Organize a festivity at the end of the camp and invite children of refugees.

Accomodation and food

The station consists of a main building in which 2 bedrooms (boys vs girls) are available, for approx. max 10 persons each. In the rooms there are field beds. You can bring your own sleeping mat or airbed.
Next the main building is a separate building ‘Wooden House’ which can function as meeting room and can be organized by the group itself.
During the camp we will have to cook by ourselves. We have a kitchen of our own.
Also a barbeque (camp fire pit) for use is available, located under a porch. The possibility of a barbecue can be arranged. All the food supply will be bought from the supermarket.
At the nature protection station, there will be 4
toilets and 4 showers. One shower is located inside the
building and 3 rental showers are located just outside the building and are connected with water and
electricity for warm water. A washing machine is not available in the building.
A WIFI network is available at the building.

Location and leisure

A music festival ‘Sjwaampop’ in Roermond, The Netherlands (24 august 2024, free of charge),

Project hosted by

The Meinweg is a beautiful piece of nature of approximately 1800 hectares. It is located in the easternmost corner of Central Limburg and is enclosed on three sides through Germany. The Meinweg has a long history through centuries -old use of these land. The name Meinweg originated from the Celtic word gemeyne, which means common or together. It was the Gemeinde Weide of the fourteen villages that controlled and used the area. Now there are six in the Netherlands of these villages like Roermond and eight villages on German territory like Wildenrath. https://www.natuurparkenlimburg.nl/np/de-meinweg.
The Meinweg National Park, as part from Grenspark Maas-Schwalm-Nette, (http://www.naturpark-msn.de) is of great significance geologically, due to the terraced landscape that is unique for the Netherlands, with three steep transitions between the various terraces. These were created by erosion of the sediments deposited in the distant past by Rijn and Maas and by shifts in the earth's crust.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting point is Railway Station Wegberg Dalheim;
From there, travel by car / project bus directly to the residence Environmental protection station Haus Wildenrath, Naturparkweg 2, 41844 Wegberg, Germany.
