PROJECT: The aqueduct of the Ex Hacienda of El Hospital in the city of Cuautla, has been the object of an enhancement by AMVIAC in collaboration with local authorities, national and international civil associations, professional associations and many other actors since 2019. More than 20 volunteer camps have been held in this aqueduct with the participation of more than 450 volunteers. The tasks carried out by the volunteers have been in the field of architecture, civil engineering, history, biology, archeology, carpentry, among others. The project aims to involve the local community in this enhancement and generate tourist, economic, cultural and social development in the region.
THE AQUEDUCT
It is a construction from the s. XVII of 1.5 kilometers of development in which the use of limestone and partition is observed, joined with mortar of slaked lime and river sand, as well as scraps of the same rock. Its formation is, basically, a succession of semicircular arches throughout its development.
This construction belongs to the monumental complex of the Hospital hacienda, where you can still see a large part of its buildings, such as the chacuaco (chimney), some rooms that have ceilings with Catalan vaults and lanterns, magnificent windows with large blacksmith, its perimeter fence and a small chapel.

For the fourth time, an international volunteer camp will be held in the former convent of San Francisco de Asís in Calpan. Calpan will once again welcome national and international volunteers to carry out awareness-raising activities about the importance of preserving local cultural heritage, supporting the preservation of the former convent. The importance of this complex lies mainly in the façade of the temple, which, together with the four chapels, constitute one of the most notable complexes of the 16th century in Mexico. These chapels, which were built around 1555, display carved stone reliefs of theological scenes. It is considered a jewel of the architecture of the viceroyalty. The four posas chapels were consecrated to the following saints: San Miguel, San Juan Evangelista, La Asunción and San Francisco. All of them present a very similar architectural composition, varying only in their ornamental design of great artistic value and cover. These chapels are an integral part of the historical and cultural wealth of the former convent, and their beauty continues to captivate those who visit them.

Project hosted by

THE PROJECT
The project to enhance and restore the aqueduct was born from the concern of Cuautla citizens to improve their built cultural heritage. Since the end of 2018, various actions have been carried out with the purpose of highlighting this monument and giving it life through the participation of national and international volunteers. Since 2019, more than 18 actions have been organized in which more than 500 people have participated. The project has also generated the implementation of activities that give life to the aqueduct such as thematic bicycle rides, photographic exhibitions, musical presentations, among others.

PARTICIPATION FEE: $3,500 pesos; includes lodging and food (3 meals a day and snacks during the work day), local transportation and administrative expenses.
LANGUAGE: Spanish is the most common language spoken in Mexico and people in the community do not speak necessarily other language. However, the language in the camp will be the one the group agrees to use. It is usually that the volunteers coming to Mexico want to learn to speak Spanish and this will facilitate the communication environment within the camp. If volunteers do not speak Spanish, it is not a problem but rather an opportunity for everyone.
