Project hosted by

The Emmaus Community of Erba is part of the global Emmaus Movement, which aims to combat poverty and social exclusion through the principles of work, sharing, and mutual aid. The Emmaus Trapeiros Association, present in the Como area since 2000, shares the values of the Emmaus Movement through work, sharing and service. Over the years, the group s attention and support has been given to various organisations in the area and to communities and associations in various European countries, as well as in Africa and Latin America. The commitment of the community members, volunteers and friends has been rewarded with the opening of the community in 2011 and, in 2019, the new headquarters and marketplace in the town of Erba. The challenge is to resist and to continue - every day - the work of collecting used materials with people who want to share the Emmaus experience and carry out actions of solidarity with others.

Directions to meeting point

Work

Since the year 2021 a new project has begun, Liberi Sogni bought a rural structure in the hill called Brianza Mountain (400 mt above sea level) named “Cascina Rapello”. This is an inclusive place where everyone can take action, schools, organized groups, families, children and everyone can take part in this new adventure. The main aims of the project are environmental education, sustainability of the food chain and awareness through the active engagement of young people in an international and natural environment. Through the experience in the woods and the social farm, we would like to achieve personal development, increase active citizenship in society, improve language competences, raise participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries. .By joining this workcamp you will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals: LifeOnLand-SDG15 and ClimateAction-SDG13.
WORK : For eleven days, volunteers will live and work in Cascina Rapello, living the experience of working in a rural social farm, volunteers will work around 5 - 6 hours each day. The participants are going to do activities like growing vegetables and fruit trees, helping restoring the ancient woods, taking care of our 4 donkeys, cooking lunch with the organic food from the cultivations, supporting the creation of artistic and environmental laboratories, arrangement of the camp taking care of all the structures, working in the woods: building structures (tables, games etc.) with the materials found in site, supporting and creating artistic and social activities, also with the aim of welcoming people with disabilities or who in any case are bearers of different languages. During the day there is some time for games and activities. In the afternoon the participants will take part in special workshops in land art. Some evenings will be organized with "cultural nights", where one or more countries organize a dinner with the typical food and games and /or workshops to show their own culture. The rest of the evenings there will be moments at the fireplace, free evenings or some games in the darkness.

Accomodation and food

The participants will sleep in tents of 4 people. The tents will be provided, but the volunteers will have to bring their camping mattress and sleeping bag. The tents will be divided into girls and boys tents. Participants must carry their belongings in a backpack, as they will arrive at camp on foot. Electricity and hot water will be provided by photovoltaic and solar panels. The toilets are 2 compost toilets, made of wood. There are also home made showers open air with tendon for privacy. Cause of summer dryness of the last years, volunteers will be invited to not waste water. The food will be prepared by the volunteers, who will eat together in a big tent or open air. Most of the food will come from local farms the fair trade. Drinking water will be taken from the local fountain. There won’t be an internet connection and the use of electricity will be very few since we use photovoltaic panels. Participants can bring typical food of their countries to share but alcohol is not allowed in the camp.

Location and leisure

In both camps for eleven days the volunteers will be hosted in Cascina Rapello sited in Aizurro (LC), a very little village with around 180 inhabitants. The closest place with facilities like small shops, train stations or other services is the village of Airuno (3,3 km far from Cascina Rapello). During the camp Liberi Sogni will provide all the necessary to live. It could be organized a trip downstream to explore the area with a bath in the lake or rivers. In the afternoon volunteers will take part in special workshops in land art, and visit local small farms

Project hosted by

The workcamp is organized by Liberi Sogni, a small non-profit organization that organizes, since 2006, social, cultural and environmental projects in the districts of Lecco, Bergamo and Monza e Brianza, in the region Lombardy. Liberi Sogni always considered the intercultural topic very important. Many people that work in the cooperative experimented directly with how important it is to promote solidarity and attention towards cultures, especially among young people.

Project hosted by

The proposal stems from the meeting between IBO Italia and the Social Promotion Association "I Tetragonauti," founded in 2003 and today made up of professionals and volunteers with expertise in educational pedagogy and maritime experience. The main objective of I Tetragonauti is to implement social and educational interventions and projects aimed at minors, minors in distress, those with difficulties, and people with disabilities, identifying the marine environment and sailing boats as the privileged contexts and tools for their work.

The project thus involves a volunteer experience aboard a sailboat.

Why this experience?
A sea journey has strong educational and formative characteristics: sailing allows you to discover different horizons and possibilities, passions and interests. It helps you learn new things and stimulates the discovery of new aspects of yourself. Living in direct contact with the sea offers a privileged opportunity to get to know it, learn to respect it, and discover its rules and beauty. Being surrounded by the sea, day and night, will make you feel a deep connection with nature. The weather elements and the various forms of marine life will be our travel companions.
Being part of a crew, sharing with others the emotions of sailing, the responsibilities, the enjoyable situations, and the difficult ones, allows you to enter a new dimension based on collaboration, camaraderie, and mutual trust.
Community life on the boat is the privileged space for collaborative action, the ideal environment to experiment with relationships involving rules, roles, duties, tasks, and responsibilities.
The journey is undoubtedly the most intense educational moment.
It’s the time to detach from comforts and securities in order to enter a different reality, sometimes challenging, which inevitably forces you to let go of your own restraints, your own resistance, and to engage with others and with differences.

The activities will alternate between moments on board and on land. During the week, there will be cleaning and maintenance work on the beaches, which will be reached by boat. Special attention will be given to the issue of plastic usage and plastic in the sea, participating in the “Back to Life” project in collaboration with the Genoa Aquarium and Livorno of Plastic in the Sea.

Additionally, life on board will be managed communally through rotating kitchen and cleaning shifts. Through the food pyramid and the exchange of typical recipes from participants' countries of origin, there will be discussions on education and intercultural food practices. Thanks to the partnership with the Food Bank of Tuscany, we will also address the theme of food sustainability, policies, and virtuous behaviors to avoid food waste.
Each day will start with a warm-up session: some simple physical exercises to get moving. During the navigation, everyone will be involved as crew members in maneuvers (steering, sails, anchor) and some basic knowledge (boat nomenclature, winds and courses, main knots).
Work sessions will be balanced with free time for swimming, SUP, snorkeling, and walks.

Embarking in Olbia, during the week we will sail to Tavolara/Golfo Aranci, Gulf of Arzachena, Caprera, La Maddalena, Budelli and Razzoli, then return to Olbia. In each location there will be time ashore for trekking, environmental and cultural activities.
No nights in port are planned.
The exact itinerary will be determined based on weather and sea conditions.

Directions to meeting point

Olbia Airport on the 20th of July at 2:00 PM.
Return to Olbia Port on the 26th of July at 2:00 PM.

Additional comments

Bring a recipe to share, a game to teach, or a song to sing together.

Space is limited, and it's not possible to leave items or bags on the bed.
NO hard suitcases or trolleys on board: there is no space to store them.

• Sunscreen
• Two swimsuits
• A windbreaker, rain jacket, or jacket
• Sunglasses

MEDICAL AND HEALTH SECTION
Even though we won’t be crossing the Atlantic, there may not always be a hospital or pharmacy nearby. On board, there is a basic first aid kit, but you are asked to organize yourselves in case of specific needs and to inform us about any allergies or particular health issues.
For seasickness on board, only anchovies will be used, as Travelgum or similar medicines often contain substances that cause side effects. If you want to bring them for safety or because you’ve already used them, you do so at your own risk. In any case, it’s advised to check and test products now while you are on land if you wish.

FOOD AND GASTRONOMIC SECTION
The same applies as above for special cases (allergies, celiac, etc.). Please notify us in advance for proper organization.

ENVIRONMENT
All personal hygiene and body care products must be biodegradable since they will eventually end up in the sea (soap, toothpaste, shampoo). We will provide shampoo and shower gel for the shower. If you bring other products, make sure they are labeled “biodegradable” (not just “sustainable,” “100% green,” “made with recycled/recyclable plastic”).
Try to avoid single-use plastic bottles and containers, and prefer soap bars instead. Try to avoid single-use plastic bottles and containers, and prefer soap bars instead.

Work

Volunteers will be asked to take care of pathways in the area surrounding Castello Dell’Acqua. These paths are very important because each of them leads to old mills and ethnographic sites. Moreover, being near to a natural park they are used by excursionists. Volunteers will have to cut and collect the grass, remove shrubs and assist local volunteers’ groups who are going to collaborate to the maintenance of the woods. In the period of time in which the camp will take place, some running competitions in the area might take place. Volunteers might be asked to signalize the paths and assist the organization of running competitions. The volunteers will be working for approximately 5 hours per day, depending also on the weather.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be hosted in an apartment in the city hall of Castello dell'Acqua. The apartment has 8 beds but there is enough space to add a folding bed. The diet will be vegetarian.

Location and leisure

Volunteers will be shown all the places and costumes of the local farming culture. Teglio, a well-known locality famous for the making of Pizzoccheri, is near Castello dell’Acqua, as well as Tirano. People living in Castello dell’Acqua are really looking forward to welcoming volunteers from all over the world and will gladly help them with their tasks. The group will also enjoy some excursions in the surrounding woods.

The closest airports are: Milan Bergamo Airport, Milano Malpensa Airport and Milano Linate airport. From there you can take shuttle buses or a train called Malpensa express (from Malpensa airport) that will take you to Milano Centrale station. From there you have to take the train to Tirano (not Torino!!) and get off in Tresenda-Aprica-Teglio railway station. null

Project hosted by

Legambiente Lecco is made up of young and dynamic people, mostly under 30. The main activity of this local group is the management of an eco-hostel in Monte Barro Park in Galbiate. It is also involved in campaigns against food waste and clean-ups, it organizes Erasmus+ projects and promotes sustainable mobility with the project Piedibus in Lecco.

Requirements

In order to better enjoy this experience volunteers are required to have a great will to walk and work (such as hiking boots and mountain shirts, for example). Volunteers will be involved in working activities for about 30 hours per week, and will have to cook for themselves (the food will be provided). A basic knowledge of English language is also required.

The municipality of Amendolara, located in the Upper Ionian Sea with 2,700 inhabitants, boasts a rich historical heritage ranging from Greek colonization to medieval times. The territory stretches from the hillside, at an altitude of 400 meters, to the 8 km of coastline. The municipal administration, together with the association “Mediterraneo Interiore,” is committed to the historical, cultural and environmental enhancement of the town. Of particular note is the Secca di Amendolara, a marine area of protected biodiversity, located about 12 miles from the coast. A detachment of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station operates here, studying the marine ecosystem. The shoal is characterized by seabed depths between 19 and 40 meters, with rocky and coralligenous outcrops, formed by the erosion of an ancient submerged island, perhaps identifiable with the mythical Monte Sardo, mentioned in 17th-18th century nautical charts. According to legend, it may be the island of Ogigia, where the nymph Calypso detained Ulysses in the Odyssey.
The municipal administration, in collaboration with the Assoc. “Mediterraneo Interiore,” promotes activities for environmental protection and historical-landscape recovery, focusing on the enhancement of the territory and its cultural identity.

Work

During this camp, volunteers will be engaged in maintenance and care works on the paths within the protected area of the Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park and the village of Sasso di Castalda. In particular, the camp will focus on the Basilicata Frassati Path (within the protected area) and the Sentiero dell'Ascolto (Listening Path) (within the village).

Alongside the path maintenance activities, there will also be activities to learn more about the climate crisis and get to know the area that will host the international volunteer camp; there will also be activities to get to know the local Legambiente groups active in the Basilicata region.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be accommodated in an Environmental Education Centre, with self-managed kitchen. Meals will be mainly vegetarian/vegan. Accommodation is also equipped with a washing machine.

Location and leisure

The village of Sasso di Castalda is one of the 29 municipalities that make up the Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese Apennine Park, nestled in the mountains of the Basilicata region.

The village is located at an altitude of 949 m a.s.l. and is surrounded by woods and beech forests, criss-crossed by easy-to-travel paths immersed in nature.

The territory of Sasso di Castalda has been inhabited since Roman times, although the village was officially founded around 1068 A.D. as a stronghold of the Normans.

Volunteers can reach Potenza (the regional capital of Basilicata) and then travel to Sasso di Castalda by shuttles organised by the host association. It is possible to reach Potenza by train (Trenitalia ‘Potenza Centrale’ station) or by bus from Rome, Naples or Foggia. The nearest airports are Naples Capodichino, Bari Palese and Rome Fiumicino international airport. It's preferable to arrive in Potenza in the 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. slot null

Project hosted by

Legambiente Basilicata was founded in 1990 and brings together all the association's local groups in the region. Environmental and biodiversity protection, scientific environmentalism and the fight against oil exploitation in Basilicata are the main battles of the regional association.

Legambiente Basilicata is also involved in environmental education activities (in schools of all levels) and the dissemination of the values of peace, non-violence, hospitality and social solidarity in the region.

Volunteer camps are an important tool to make our activities known also outside the region and to implement projects for the protection and care of the territory, thanks to national and international volunteers.

Requirements

Aptitude for manual work, hiking in the forest and working in a team.

The Emmaus Community of Villafranca is part of the global Emmaus Movement, which aims to combat poverty and social exclusion through the principles of work, sharing, and mutual aid.The Emmaus Community of Villafranca di Verona was founded in 1985, following a work camp organised in Villafranca in which young Italians and Europeans took part. Due to the success of the camp, the Municipality made available a former school. From the beginning, a group of friends was formed around the community, with whom Emmaus organised (and still organises) moments of deepening on the themes of solidarity, peace, non-violence... The role of this group of friends has been fundamental in the life of the Community and in making Emmaus known and appreciated in Villafranca. And if today so many people understand and support our community, it is thanks to the work and presence of these friends. The main objective of Emmaus is the reception of people in need, carrying out activities such as the collection, reuse and recycling of used materials with display at the Solidarity Flea Market. Zero Mileage Garden: organic vegetable growing. Care and maintenance of the community s green spaces. Spending the day (activities and free time) with the people hosted on the site.

The restoration of the trail involves manual labor, with volunteers dedicating at least 6 hours a day, primarily during the early morning hours. Participants will assist Legambiente in restoring the dry stone walls that line the path of Lago Grande and the Cyclamen Trail. The project includes cleaning the trail, as well as reclaiming sections overrun by vegetation, which threaten the stability of the walls.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be accommodated in a repurposed school building equipped with a self-managed kitchen. The diet will be eco-sustainable, focusing on local products with minimal meat consumption.

Location and leisure

The Monte Pallano area is enchantingly beautiful, rich in natural and archaeological wonders. Its strategic location and the presence of water sources have made it a hub of human settlement over the centuries, as evidenced by the remains of the ancient Pallanum settlement, the impressive Megalithic Walls, and signs of human presence from the Neolithic to the Hellenistic-Roman period. In more recent times, farmers and shepherds frequented Pallano and left traces of stone from their passage, altering the landscape. Tornareccio is a village famous for its open-air mosaic museum.

Traveling from Rome (Ciampino Airport, Fiumicino Airport, Tiburtina Bus Station): By bus: From Rome, you can travel from Tiburtina station directly to Tornareccio (tickets available at: https://clikbus.sotrap.it/home). By train: Arrive at Pescara train station, then take a bus from Pescara train station to Tornareccio (Ch), or travel by train to Fossacesia - Torino di Sangro station and then take a bus to Tornareccio. Alternatively, take a bus to Atessa (the city before Tornareccio) and contact Legambiente volunteers to arrange a car ride for the last part of the journey null

Legambiente, in this area, manages Casanatura Fontecampana center, a place where people of any age can meet each other and share their love for nature and environment and broaden their knowledges about them through various activities.
