Work

Krýsuvík is part of the Reykjanes Geopark. It was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.
The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways by fighting erosion and revegetation of the land.

The first step is to nourish and revegetate the land with organic waste and planting trees. We will also monitor the growth of tree plantations from former years.

By the house are 5 large greenhouses. At first, the project will be focused on renovating these greenhouses to use them to plant and grow a large variety of vegetables and fruits for the volunteers of the organization.

Agriculture will take place both inside and outside of the greenhouses. We will welcome animals such as chickens and goats as part of the sustainable development of the camp.
The Geopark is protected and is crossed by several hiking paths. We can also work with the municipality to help them maintain the hiking path and protected areas nearby.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 600 m² and has 10 rooms for 3 to 4 people each. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 30.
Volunteers need to bring their sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge at the accommodation.

Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged!

Location and leisure

There are opportunities for fun all over Krýsuvík. From adventurous activities to well-known tourist attractions, this delightful area packs a punch. From great hiking trails among various landscapes (geothermal area, lake, beach, mountain), to bird watching or cultural visits in Reykjavik, you have many activities to choose from. The closeness to nature is always within reach!
It can be tempting to get closer to touch the hot springs but make sure to stay away from them and on the marked path as the heat is 80-100 degrees Celsius.
You should not go for high or steep mountains without a professional guide. Keep in mind this is a highly active geothermal area.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend or one-day excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents or even icebergs;

The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. It can be a presentation, a game, or a theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Note: NO public transportation in the area

Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.

The first day of the camp is Arrival Day and the last day of the camp is Departure Day. The minibus will be at the meeting point in Reykjavik on the first day of the workcamp in the morning and arrive again to BSI station in Reykjavik in the evening on the last day of the workcamp.

Keep in mind that you need to arrange for your stay in Iceland before and after the workcamp.

Work

SEEDS volunteers will be mostly working on the hiking trails and walking paths in this beautiful mountanious area. The main tasks of the volunteers will be making and marking the walking trails on the different routes in the area. The work is physical and tools may include the sledge (sledgehammer) and crowbar.
Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Additional tasks may be cleaning or beautifying the surroundings, like hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by some visitors.
Some of the trails are located in an isolated area and the group may spend the day at the work site, therefore it will be needed to prepare packed lunches in the morning as we would return in the late afternoon back to the accommodation. The group may be split during the day to work in different locations.
The working day normally runs from 09:00 to 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland's changeable weather. No previous experience is necessary but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition; it can at times be repetitive.
As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned.
Volunteers need to be prepared for working and walking in a raw landscape and sometimes cold weather. Be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and bring warm clothes as the tasks take place outside and it can get cold. Bring warm under-layers, waterproofs, walking shoes/boots, a good sleeping bag and gloves.

Accomodation and food

This project gives SEEDS volunteers the opportunity to live in a very beautiful mountain hut which has been very popular among visitors travelling into the interior or the highlands. It may be possible to stay in tents some nights. Volunteers will sleep on mattresses in shared rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. There are cooking facilities, kitchen, bathrooms and showers in the hut. Volunteers will share the duties of preparing food, cooking meals and cleaning. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions.
Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

In the Lón District, the easternmost area of the Vatnajökull region, lie the Stafafell mountains, also called Lónsöræfi. They dominate the skyline east of the Vatnajökull glacier and comprise one of Iceland’s most extensive protected areas.  Besides the deep, rugged canyons, the landscape displays a wide range of colours owing to the presence of rhyolite and other colourful rocks. The numerous trails make this area perfect for hiking.

SEEDS volunteers will work in the area of Lónsöræfi or the Lón district, located in the East of Iceland, we will work in the municipality of Hornafjörður, in cooperation with some locals and the Environmental Agency.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 250 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. The participation fee does not include the transportation from Reykjavík to the camp and back, which will cost EUR 75 (Euros) one way or EUR 150 (Euros) both ways.
This work camp takes place in a very remote place, located in a natural area of extreme beauty. Outdoor free-time activities, for instance hikes or walks in the surroundings, will be arranged for SEEDS volunteers.
It may be very cold and/or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats) and good walking shoes, as most of the activities take place outdoors.

Work

In Skálafell the ski slopes are turned into a bike park during summertime and mountain bike enthusiasts can nourish their passion. The main tasks will include renovation and maintenance work on the bike trails; mainly raking and scraping them up. Other possible tasks may be related to general cleaning of the area.
In the Blue Mountains, the main tasks will be maintaining the slopes and preparing them for the next ski season. The municipality and several sports associations run lodges and mountain huts there and they may also need some renovation jobs, such as painting and/or cleaning.
The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local hosts, this group is planned to mostly work at Skálafell. The landscape is raw and volunteers need to be motivated to work outdoors and to experience isolated mountain areas. No previous experience is necessary, but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition. As it is outdoor work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned tasks.
The camp happens around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake and enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the camp participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun does set for short periods of time.

SEEDS volunteers will stay in one of the ski lodges in the mountains and sleep in a shared dormitory. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional/typical food, drinks, music and recipes from your country for the intercultural evening.

Location and leisure

The skiing areas of Bláfjöll and Skálafell are both about 30 minutes driving away from the city. The Blue Mountains are south-west of Reykjavík and Skálafell is located to the east of the city. Both areas have great slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding as well as tracks for cross-country skiing. Bláfjöll has 16 lifts and Skálafell has 4 lifts. The sports area in Skálafell is situated at an elevation between 380 and 700 m.
The Blue Mountain range is situated near the ring road and stretches from the capital area to the south-western lowlands. The highest mountain in the range reaches 600 m and in 1968 the district became a very popular skiing resort among Icelanders. The areas are excellent for recreation, not only for alpine and cross country skiing, but for other outdoor activities as well such as hiking and mountain biking. Nature lovers are certain to find something to their liking, but it’s important to be careful crossing the rugged lava fields because of the numerous caves underneath.

Work

In Skálafell the ski slopes are turned into a bike park during summertime and mountain bike enthusiasts can nourish their passion. The main tasks will include renovation and maintenance work on the bike trails; mainly raking and scraping them up. Other possible tasks may be related to general cleaning of the area.
In the Blue Mountains, the main tasks will be maintaining the slopes and preparing them for the next ski season. The municipality and several sports associations run lodges and mountain huts there and they may also need some renovation jobs, such as painting and/or cleaning.
The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local hosts, this group is planned to mostly work at Bláfjöll. The landscape is raw and volunteers need to be motivated to work outdoors and to experience isolated mountain areas. No previous experience is necessary, but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition. As it is outdoor work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned tasks.
The camp happens around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake and enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the camp participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun does set for short periods of time.

Krýsuvík is part of the Reykjanes Geopark. It was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.
The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways by fighting erosion and revegetation of the land.

The first step is to nourish and revegetate the land with organic waste and planting trees. We will also monitor the growth of tree plantations from former years.

By the house are 5 large greenhouses. At first, the project will be focused on renovating these greenhouses to use them to plant and grow a large variety of vegetables and fruits for the volunteers of the organization.

Agriculture will take place both inside and outside of the greenhouses. We will welcome animals such as chickens and goats as part of the sustainable development of the camp.
The Geopark is protected and is crossed by several hiking paths. We can also work with the municipality to help them maintain the hiking path and protected areas nearby.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 600 m² and has 10 rooms for 3 to 4 people each. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 30.
Volunteers need to bring their sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge at the accommodation.
Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged!

There are opportunities for fun all over Krýsuvík. From adventurous activities to well-known tourist attractions, this delightful area packs a punch. From great hiking trails among various landscapes (geothermal area, lake, beach, mountain), to bird watching or cultural visits in Reykjavik, you have many activities to choose from. The closeness to nature is always within reach!
It can be tempting to get closer to touch the hot springs but make sure to stay away from them and on the marked path as the heat is 80-100 degrees Celsius.
You should not go for high or steep mountains without a professional guide. Keep in mind this is a highly active geothermal area.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend or one-day excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents or even icebergs;

The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. It can be a presentation, a game, or a theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Work

Krýsuvík is part of the Reykjanes Geopark. It was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.
The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways by fighting erosion and revegetation of the land.

The first step is to nourish and revegetate the land with organic waste and planting trees. We will also monitor the growth of tree plantations from former years.

By the house are 5 large greenhouses. At first, the project will be focused on renovating these greenhouses to use them to plant and grow a large variety of vegetables and fruits for the volunteers of the organization.

Agriculture will take place both inside and outside of the greenhouses. We will welcome animals such as chickens and goats as part of the sustainable development of the camp.
The Geopark is protected and is crossed by several hiking paths. We can also work with the municipality to help them maintain the hiking path and protected areas nearby.

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house is approximately 600 m² and has 10 rooms for 3 to 4 people each. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas. House capacity 30.
Volunteers need to bring their sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge at the accommodation.
Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged!

Location and leisure

There are opportunities for fun all over Krýsuvík. From adventurous activities to well-known tourist attractions, this delightful area packs a punch. From great hiking trails among various landscapes (geothermal area, lake, beach, mountain), to bird watching or cultural visits in Reykjavik, you have many activities to choose from. The closeness to nature is always within reach!
It can be tempting to get closer to touch the hot springs but make sure to stay away from them and on the marked path as the heat is 80-100 degrees Celsius.
You should not go for high or steep mountains without a professional guide. Keep in mind this is a highly active geothermal area.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend or one-day excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents or even icebergs;

The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. It can be a presentation, a game, or a theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Note: NO public transportation in the area

Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization promoting nature and peace-oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.

Additional comments

The first day of the camp is Arrival Day and the last day of the camp is Departure Day. The minibus will be at the meeting point in Reykjavik on the first day of the workcamp in the morning and arrive again to BSI station in Reykjavik in the evening on the last day of the workcamp.

Keep in mind that you need to arrange for your stay in Iceland before and after the workcamp.
