Work

Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.
While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture by taking part in it, capturing it and also by displaying their work during the camp. One of our objectives is to empower young people to use photography to draw attention to environmental and cultural subjects and issues.
Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and working within a flexible time schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.

Accomodation and food

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms/dorms of up to 6 people. Please bring your own towel.
Participants will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music or games from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Location and leisure

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

Project hosted by

This is the seventeenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photo marathons, while we started organising camps open for teenagers in the year 2010.
Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-related learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help the participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, as well as to create conceptual frameworks highlighting the participants’ individual style.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) in the afternoon of June 3 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am to the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time.

Additional comments

This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and Reykjanes Peninsula excursions.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 600 (Euros), which needs to be transferred to SEEDS the latest one month before the camp starts to confirm the placement. It includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the Golden Circle and Reykjanes excursions. We will visit spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, a volcano crater, the Thingvellir National Park and much more.

Work

Let's fight global warming. 12 days Adventure camp for 15 to 17 years old teenagers. Traveling in Iceland while visiting the most beautiful places on the island, while also taking action, by participating in different activities that will benefit the local community! With exciting activities like whale watching, and discovering glaciers, black sand beaches, lava fields, hot springs, and pure nature. During the camp, the youngters will have a special focus in photography and workshops about how to prevent global warming in their daily life.

Krýsuvík (South-west)
Krýsuvík is a geothermal and volcanic area in the southwest of Iceland. It is situated on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 35 km from Reykjavik. The name Krýsuvík means "bay of Krýsa," a folk tale figure from the area.
The project aims to develop Local, Organic, and Sustainable Agriculture. The main work of this camp will be to take care of the land, in various ways.

Brú (North-west)
We will participate in Beach Cleaning activities! The plastic crisis is one of the major environmental challenges of our times. Plastic pollution impacts our health, water, tourism, fishing, and overall ecosystem. Plastic debris has accumulated in natural habitats from the poles to the equator. This program takes a bottom-up approach, focusing on how an individual can change their perception of plastic, understand responsibility, create motivation to contribute to combatting the crisis, and, ultimately, ideally change their plastic behaviors.
We work with the local community as well helping with the reforestation of the areas nearby.

Some days, when the weather conditions are not suitable, we will focus on renovation work; painting or fixing things around and inside the house.
We will upcycle garbage into art! While creating bookshelves out of driftwood or designing a chair with old tires and nets, your imagination is the limit!

Our work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. Working hours are about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes it might change.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be staying in the houses of Worldwide Friends, hostel-style rooms.
Rooms will be shared by gender.

Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bags, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge. Access to a washing machine.

Food is included for the duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. A vegetarian diet is encouraged.

Location and leisure

Around the houses, you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, waterfalls, rivers, canyons, and craters. The areas nearby are great for hiking, so we will spend a lot of time outside.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, or theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Project hosted by

Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization promoting nature and peace-oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.

Note that this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; it has a smaller work part and puts more emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions.

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) in the afternoon of July 27 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am to the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 650 (Euros), which needs to be transferred to SEEDS the latest one month before the camp starts to confirm the placement. It includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the Golden Circle and Reykjanes excursions. We will visit spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, a volcano crater, the Thingvellir National Park and much more.

Directions to meeting point

Take a bus (Flybus) from Keflavík Airport to the meeting point
BSÍ Bus Terminal

Additional comments
