Work

The challenge of food security, especially in the face of rising food prices, places a serious responsibility before the country. Despite immense advances in the agriculture sector, many people still sleep hungry or live under the threat of food shortage. The degradation of natural resources is also a major concern as it severely impacts the livelihoods of poor and backward communities in rural areas. In this backdrop, sustainable agriculture is one of the most effective ways to respond to the challenges of the rural community. In essence, Sustainable Agriculture refers to a set of practices adopted for cultivation that are least harmful to the environment while also ensuring a good crop.
It involves crop production methods that support sustainable natural resource management to increase crop productivity, maintain biodiversity, and also are economically viable and socially acceptable. Organic farming is generally sustainable; however, organic produce can also be cultivated on large scale industrial farms that are not sustainable. Soil and water management, organic farming, integrated pest management, and integrated nutrient management are common practices promoted under sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agricultural development, as well as employing organic farming methods, seeks food and nutritional security, improved livelihoods for our people, safe ecosystems, and sustainable economies of agriculture.
The LTV volunteers will be given opportunity to understand the social and cultural aspects of the community/Project they work. The volunteers will be given experience through interactions, workshops, exchange of ideas, baseline and endline survey of the projects with the support of the mentor. At the end of their projects the volunteers will present to the Universities about the outcome and impact of their projects. The project activity will consist of community service, development Learning, Cultural exchange, Project and personal evaluation.
As a volunteer in this field of work you will -
• Work with the farming community and the associated organizations that assist in sustainable agriculture and/or organic farming.
• Conduct community awareness on the importance of sustainable agriculture.
• Facilitate training and capacity building on crop productivity, how to maintain biodiversity, water management, organic farming, integrated pest management, and integrated nutrient management, surveys, documentations etc.
The Info-sheet will have more information regarding the individual projects with schedules, and activities

Work

FSL-India has its very own eco-friendly Centre for Experiential Living (CEL) at Kundapura, in the lush green, rural area of coastal Karnataka, which is home to breath-taking fauna and flora. The Centre itself is surrounded by coconut and mango trees, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
In 2014, FSL India established a centre with a broad objective of providing a unique opportunity for National / International volunteers and local communities to understand and experience Sustainable Agriculture practices, propagating environmental education to youth and children, training on social leadership and preparation of stakeholders of Sea turtle Conservation through workshops and awareness sessions.
The international volunteers that we receive through the long term / mid- term / work camp programs will have the chance to experience environment friendly technologies adopted in the CEL uring the orientation seminar, evaluation seminars and get-together organized by FSL India. Few of the environment friendly technologies adopted are Rain water harvesting, Solar energy harvesting used for lighting, fans and Solar water heater.
The CEL is established in a location surrounded by greenery and the centre itself has adopted many green technologies and waste management systems such as the usage of a kitchen waste, dry leaves for compost. The CEL provides opportunities to interact with many Long Term Volunteers and Home Based Project volunteers and staff working in and around the centre. For the past 15 years, the Sea Turtle population has been under threat from fishing and egg predation by local population. Three species of the protected Sea Turtles are nesting on India’s West Coast and all of them are endangered species. The increased threats caused by humans could drive them to extinction With an effort to protect these endangered species, FSL-India is working along a 60 kilometre stretch of the beach in the south and north of Kundapur, Karnataka state. The work is focused on protection and conservation of Sea turtle, by promoting awareness about the eco-system and addressing related environmental issues.

It’s every Child’s right to have a joyful childhood and grow up in a safe and nurturing environment with protection and guidance from their guardians. Whether in the cities or in villages, at home or in schools, every child deserves a childhood free from exploitation and abuse. Children are the hope and future of a nation. Yet, there are millions deprived children in our country who have never known a normal, carefree childhood.

Many NGOs across the country are working for elimination of child labour and promotion child rights. Prevention strategies adopted include rescue, relief and rehabilitation interventions designed by NGOs and other actors with education, health, alternative livelihoods.

Additional comments

Adequate sanitation, together with good hygiene and safe water, are fundamental to good health and as well as social and economic development. The Sustainable Development Goal target 6.2 calls for adequate and equitable sanitation for all. Sanitation and hygiene are critical to health, survival, and development. Lack of these facilities leave people at risk for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related diseases. Garbage disposal is another serious problem and adversely impacts environment and their health. A movement through education and campaigning on WASH needs to be built up.

Requirements

Volunteers with openness to accept challenging life, flexibility to adapt and adjust and get used to slow pace of work are preferred,

Additional comments

RUCHI believes ”community development” cannot be achieved until women in our society are empowered and are respected within our society. A women plays many roles within Indian society; a daughter, a wife, a mother, a home maker and even labourer to earn wages if need arises. Surprisingly after supporting her family in various ways she is mostly not consulted and involved in household decision making.

RUCHI always recognised women’s efforts and believes that, educating a women educates whole family & therefore keeping that in mind RUCHI has initiated voluntary project facilitating cultural exposure and assisting women to overcome these odds.

Additional comments

In rural areas quality education is still a distant dream. We have government schools and other institutions catering to various age group but they strictly lack infrastructure and staff required to provide quality learning for students. We regularly cooperate with various educational institutions in our close proximity and deliver need based lessons for their kids with assistance from our participants. Our aim with this project is to reduce rural, urban education divide in order for kids to have an equal start in their career.

Requirements

Volunteers with openness to accept challenging life, flexibility to adapt and adjust and get used to slow pace of work are preferred

Tibet has maintained a unique culture, religion and language for centuries. After the Chinese nvasion in 1950, the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s political and religious leader sought and was given asylum in India, along with thousands of Tibetan refugees. Today, there is a thriving settlement in Dharamshala, which is called Tibet-in-exile. To learn about Tibetan culture and religion, there are many places of interest at Dharamshala. Tsuglagkhang, Mcleodganj the residence of the Dalai Lama
is a must-visit, as are the Tibet Museum, Dalai Lama temple, Tibetan Parliament House, Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, War Memorial and Kangra Art Museum. The Tibetan Children’s Village, a charitable organisation, caters to children who are in the greatest need among the refugees. For the last 5 decades, it has run solely on the generosity of its well-wishers. At Gyuto and Namgyal Monasteries, you can interact with the Tibetan monks and get valuable insights into the peace-loving Buddhist philosophy. If you are in the right place at the right time, you could even be fortunate enough to meet His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama himself. Palampur, the Tea Capital of North India is famous for its beautiful tea gardens, which are a natural scenic sight. Tea lovers can pick up some handcrafted, fresh mountain teas here. Some of the teas available are Black Teas, White Teas, Oolong Teas, Green Teas and Tisanes.
