Work

Volunteers will be able to do several other tasks. A shift system will be set up for each volunteer. The volunteers will have to be interested in the whole variety of services designed by the organization. After a discussion with their supervisor, members of the team and the other volunteers, they will be invited to choose the service they prefer, taking into account the preferences of the other members of the team. Our services are as follows: - An Animation Pole is dedicated to different workshops (arts and sports workshops), to the digital space and to the “citizens ‘coffee workshops”. - Regarding the grocery store in itself, volunteers will be invited to help collecting the products (reserved to the beneficiaries of our grocery store), shelving these products, in the cash accounting and in welcoming the beneficiaries. However, volunteers need to be supervised. Social links hold a very important position in the eyes of our organization. Furthermore, volunteers will also be able to get involved in the administrative tasks, in the accounting and in the management of our stocks. - Volunteers could also take an interest in the “communication pole” of our organization, in particular in aspects related to the promotion of our organization’s services. - A pole dedicated to news ideas/ social innovations could also be at the center of a project for one of the volunteers.

Accomodation and food

The house of volunteers, where participants stay, is located close to the solidarity grocery store (three minutes by foot). This house is also a place of training and welcoming. The house offers numerous rooms with a private bathroom. Other than that, the accommodation has two big living rooms, a training room, two big kitchens and two separated toilets on each stair landing. Each volunteer will be offered a room in a non-mixed dormitory with a private bathroom. Each room is equipped with a bathroom which has WC, a big Italian shower and a sink with a private access. The accommodation consists in two bunk beds per room (the room capacity is therefore of four people maximum per room). The rooms are big and comfortable enough and they all have wide windows. They can also be locked. Furthermore, volunteers will enjoy numerous private racks located in the rooms, the kitchens and the laundry rooms. Volunteers will have the possibility to relax in the living rooms, in the common areas or in the big kitchens. A laundry room with washing machines and an iron is also available for everyone. Furthermore, volunteers will have free access to the garden. Participants to the project are autonomous. Consequently, they have to tide up their rooms themselves. Furthermore, the common areas (kirchens, WCs and living rooms) have to remain clean in order to enjoy them in good conditions.

Location and leisure

Participants to the project are hosted in a solidarity organization. The main activity consists in making the solidarity grocery work. Apart from that, the organization remains a welcoming place dedicated to people going through a difficult period of their life, either socially or economically speaking. Being welcoming, attentive, respectful and comprehensive is of utter importance for us. We dedicate a lot of our time to people. The organization welcomes beneficiaries from different cultures, with different objectives. Their main request remains the access to the solidarity grocery store, but our beneficiaries can also follow a path of re-insertion into the labour market or into social life in general through a series of activities. Volunteers will be able to share these friendly moments of information with our beneficiaries and therefore, show them their support in this painful period of time. Communication is also a very important dimension in the project. We do wish that the volunteers feel listened to, useful and that they will feel free to share whatever they want with the members of the organization together with all the other people serving the organization. We want to put these social links forward through a series of common and recreational activities. These activities are organised regularly so that the volunteer can feel well during his/her whole project.

Project hosted by

As a member of the Unesco’s organizations and clubs, our partner’s objective is to offer an access to the solidarity grocery to a vast majority of beneficiaries. The solidarity grocery’s vocation is to be a space of social living, an integration and training platform, a cyber-center and a pole of international solidarity. Regarding the way the grocery works, our volunteers help us harvesting and shelving the products, they also assist us in the cash accounting, in the maintenance of the facilities and above all, in welcoming people. There is a wide range of social activities, such as cooking workshops, “citizens’ coffee workshops”, socio-aesthetic workshops, the management of the family budget and the use of the IT tool. New activities are being created each and every day. The grocery store is an animated and welcoming place as well, therefore we favour friendliness, listening and sharing. Furthermore, our partner organization is a place of information and orientation towards other partners.

Work

The path of the Monks meanders along the hillside below the chapel; it is supported by dry stone retaining walls and has a stone-covered walkway, known as a calade in south-eastern France. One of the retaining walls of the path, located under the chapel, is partly deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. You will participate in the restoration of this wall which is essential to put the chapel back in its place in the landscape by redrawing the flatness of the wall leading to it. The following work will be undertaken: dismantling and sorting of the stones, earthworks and reconstruction of the wall according to the very precise technique of dry stone construction (theoretical and practical input). You can also discover the technique of restoration of the dry stone path: punctual recovery of the damaged parts of the path, realization of stone steps. The workcamp will be supervised by a professional in dry stone construction techniques. A daily work of 6 hours is planned, the organization of the days will be discussed and decided by the group of participants. The pedagogical objective is to discover a traditional construction technique which does not require any material, except stones from the stoning of fields intended for agriculture or recovered from old buildings. Theoretical, historical and practical contributions will be disseminated. It should be noted that this workcamp is part of a more global action to enhance the site of the chapel. The population of the village is invited to take part in the work of clearing the brush and creating a calade on the chapel square.

Accomodation and food

You will be accommodated in tents at the Barillons campsite located in Serres. An animation team will be present to help you in the organization of the collective life: planning of household chores, elaboration of menus and preparation of meals in turn, organization of leisure activities and outings. The purchase of local products is widely favoured.

Location and leisure

Location: Serres is a small town in the South of France, nestled between the Alps and Haute Provence (30 km North of Sisteron, 140 km South of Grenoble). It has several services: train station, shops, Provencal market... Leisure activities: Land of light, scents and flavours, the Baronnies Provençal is a land where the sweetness of life is combined with the practice of outdoor sports like idleness! Rich in natural and agricultural heritages adapted to the Mediterranean climate under alpine influence, the Provencal Baronnies are marked by fragrant, aromatic and medicinal plants: wild thyme, rosemary, lavender. Near Serres, you can discover many major sites in the south of the Hautes-Alpes: Aujour mountain and Clausonne abbey, Saint-Genis mountain, the Méouge gorges, Orpierre site, the Riou lake where you can practice many sports activities (climbing, mountain biking, hiking, swimming in lakes and rivers).

Project hosted by

Come and discover one of the small perched towns in the South of France, Serres in the Alpes, which offers a magnificent panorama of the medium mountain range of the Baronnies Provençales! The town, leaning against the Pignolette rock, is made up of small shady medieval streets and covered and sloping passages in which it is good to stroll. At the top of this village and at the bend in the monks' path, is the chapel of Notre Dame de Bon Secours, which overlooks the Buëch valley. This building was erected in 1730 and blessed in 1732. Partly dug into the rock, it marries the hillside, on the presumed site of the former chapel of the castle of Serres. The Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park, in partnership with the association Les Villages des Jeunes and a hiking organization, launched an operation to raise awareness and promote the dry-stone building technique in 2018. Elected officials and inhabitants will be mobilized for this operation through restoration actions and discoveries of the dry-stone built heritage (conference, visit).

Work

Come to discover a prestigious itinerary of 28 km, which follows the Bourne River from Saint-Nazaire en Royans to Rencurel by connecting with the North of Vercors. Participate to the valorisation of the heritage elements of this majestic site that are the Gorges de la Bourne. Water is a constituent element of this part of the region: it has contributed to shape it, has participated in its development and is a unifying element from a natural and touristic point of view. With this long-term project, the Regional Natural Park of Vercors wishes to meet several objectives: re-beautify the crossing of Georges de la Bourne, valorising the natural, geological, historical and economical heritage related to the river and to facilitate the interpretation of landscapes and heritage. As a participant of this workcamp, you will help the Park to reach its objectives. As a group, you will follow the river’s path on 4 municipalities and you will carry out missions of cleaning, brushing, pruning and consolidation of the small walls bordering the river. This workcamp doesn’t require any specific skills. Your motivation and your interest in nature enhancement will be your main assets.

Accomodation and food

During this itinerant workcamp, you will be accommodated indoor in a communal lodging in the middle of the commune Pont en Royans, well known for its suspended houses over the Bourne River. You will have at your disposal collective rooms equipped with beds (think about bringing your sleeping bag with you), as well as common spaces where you will cook together, eat and relax. The toilettes and the showers are individual. You will organise together the collective life (cleaning, activities...) and you will participate alternately in the preparation of the meals. We will encourage the buying of local products and we will promote the principles of the local economy. Tastings of regional products are also possible at the local producers.

Location and leisure

Pont-en-Royans (around 800 inhabitants) is a dynamic commune with plenty of cultural and touristic activities. You will have the opportunity to discover the suspended houses which are a real heritage’s curiosity, to visit the museum of water, to swim at the specially equipped leisure centre on the banks of the Bourne River and to discover the Caves of Choranche. Nearby, you will also have the opportunity to go hiking and discover the natural landscapes of Royans and Vercors.

Project hosted by

For more than 15 years, Concordia is working in partnership with the Regional Natural Park of Vercors. This year, the Park celebrates its 50th anniversary and Concordia its 70th anniversary. Come to participate at this double anniversary and at a project with an important impact for the local community. You will be accompanied by the camp leaders from Concordia and supported by the Eco-Rangers from the Park, who are involved constantly in the management of natural places in Vercors.

Since then, the association wanted to make this place a place of discovery, learning and knowledge.

Work

You will have the task of developping the landscape of Fort de l'Aiguille. The work will consist of demarcating the spaces that make up the integral part of the redoubt, as well as securing and protecting the site during future cultural events. You'll need to create and install a barrier and fence around the fort's Eastern front. Additionally you'll have to dismantle the existing doorway, which is in poor condition and unaesthetic, in order to replace it.

Accomodation and food

In groups, in tents on Fouras’ campground *** (swimming pool, multi-sports space, WIFI, snacks …) Food will be provided, and meals will be prepared alternately by participants.

Location and leisure

Location: Fouras-les-Bains, Charente-Maritime, 20 km from La Rochelle. Leisure activities: You can take advantage of everything living by the ocean has to offer! Fishing, sailing with local clubs, biking along the water, and of course relaxing on the beach are just some of the things you can spend your free time enjoying. The Île d'Aix, a small car-free island in the middle of the ocean, is also available to visit by boat. Since Fouras is also a popular seaside destination, you will have the opportunity to participate in the many summer events that are put on in June.

Project hosted by

Located at the mouth of the Charente river, the peninsula of Fouras-les-Bains is home to three harbours and five beaches along the Atlantic coast. Following the 8 international work sites that were realised between 2015 and 2019, the town of Fouras-les-Bains and the association Maison des Bateleurs - Solidarités Jeunesses wanted to renew their partnership in 2020 to continue the development of Fort de l'Aiguille (said to be the largest of its kind in France). In an idyllic setting with views of Fort Boyard, the work site will continue the delimitation work being done on the redoubt (a type of fortification system built by the French military engineer Vauban that protected Fouras from potential enemy sea invasion).

Work

This project is a continuation of the work undertaken last year by volunteers. Your main project will be working on the restoration of a new part of the redoute's main facade. You will help the technical leader remove vegetation from the facade, and remove and replace the lime mortar that keeps the stones of the redoubt in place. Other traditional masonry work is also planned, such as stonecutting and redoing the capstones that decorate the top of the redoute.

An ancient village with stone houses rising up to the Romanesque church and the castle, in a setting of hills and forests, Murs dominates the immense landscapes stretching from the Pre-Alps to the Luberon. The first traces of habitation date back to the Palaeolithic! Today, the village has about 450 inhabitants. Several hiking trails cross the commune (from a few hours to a day), allowing you to discover wonderful landscapes and sites. The mayor of the village is inexhaustible on the history of the commune and its monuments. He will also show you the Palaeolithic sites where many fossils have been discovered. Finally, you will have the opportunity to visit other nearby towns and villages (Gordes, Apt, Cavaillon).

Additional comments

Remember to bring gloves, clothes and shoes for work. Nights can be cool, so bring a good warm sleeping bag. In the south of France, it can be very hot during the day, remember to bring a hat/cap, mosquito repellent, sunglasses, a backpack and a water bottle. The village is quite isolated with little public transport, remember to take with you some specialties from home for the shared meal, you can also bring games, musical instrument... The village being isolated, it is important that you plan to arrive the latest in the late afternoon at the meeting point (Apt bus terminal). We won't be able to pick you up if you arrive too late at the meeting point...make sure to arrive on time!
