Work

The work will be to assist in organising a local event called National Old Power days which displays historical engines, tools and machinery. There will be about 20 000 people visiting the event during three days. The volunteers will assist in practical tasks in arranging the event, e.g. set up a cafe, selling refreshments and tidying up the area during the event and afterwards. The volunteers must be prepared to do different kinds of work in various weather conditions. There will be hard work, but also lots of fun with locals and other volunteers. The aim of the camp is to give the volunteers a chance to experience Finnish history, nature and culture and enable the local young people to meet young adults from other countries.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will live with local families. Meals are provided. On excursion days and free days, packed lunches are provided.

Location and leisure

Oulainen is a small town, about 7800 inhabitants. It is about 100 km south from Oulu and about 550 km north from Helsinki. Various summer activities such as swimming, swamp football, playing games, excursions to nearby sights and fishing are possible. There are two ways to travel from Helsinki to Oulainen. You can travel from Helsinki to Oulu by plane and then take a train or bus from Oulu to Oulainen. Another option is to take a train directly from Helsinki to Oulainen.

The camp host is the local 4H club. 4H stand for Head, Hands, Heart and Health and it is an international network of rural youth which aims at developing the skills of young people. In Finland 4H is the biggest youth organisation with 250 local associations.

Work

Volunteers will assist in different tasks according to their skills and interests. They will organize international summer activities for elementary school children such as taking care of animals, exploring the forest, and doing arts and crafts. Another activity involves running a summer cafe, along with maintaining a vegetable garden and reed model environment. The camp also intends to host international evenings for local residents, allowing volunteers to share about their culture. Volunteers may also join activities with elderly people and help them with household chores.

Accomodation and food

Accommodation will be shared accommodation in basic conditions in a small wooden building. The volunteers will prepare their meals together.

Location and leisure

Kuusankoski is a small town next to Kouvola about 130 km north-east from Helsinki. The camp is in a forest on top of the hill in the middle of Kuusankoski town. During free time, volunteers can take part in selfguided bike tours and organized excursions. The hosting association runs in sumemr time a cafe and a small petting zoo for children so there are many visitors in the area.

Project hosted by

Foxhill Association maintains old industrial heritage of Kuusankoski and works to increase community spirit and wellbeing of people by common action. It is a voluntary association preserving the are of wooden buildings where factory workers used to live. The aim is to keep the cultural and natural heritage alive.

Work

The volunteers will assist in organizing a local music and culture festival in Jalasjarvi. Aukusti festival has been organised since 2000 and August 2024 marks the 20th time the event is held. The volunteers will assist in practical tasks, which are simple but sometimes heavy work, in arranging the event. The first week will mostly consist of building the fences and setting up and on the second week tidying up the area afterwards. So if you are interested in music and the Finnish countryside, and are ready to work hard outdoors in all weather conditions this is the camp for you.

Accomodation and food

Accommodation is at a local youth centre Wilhola within walking distance from the festival area. There is a shared sleeping area. Meals will be cooked together by the volunteers. The youth centre has a lot of activities, pool table and games. Additionally, the festival organizer also has a movie theater that is accessible to volunteers throughout the camp. Some trips to nearby places such as Ahtari Zoo and to expereince Seinajoki nightlife are also organized for volunteers.

Location and leisure

Jalasjarvi is a community of about 8000 people in Ostrobothnia in western Finland. The nearest town is Seinajoki, which is also the most convenient to reach by train from Helsinki. Seinajoki train station is about a 3 hour train ride from Helsinki airport There are also buses as www.onnibus.fi but they are way less easy as the train leaves from the airport and you only need to change in Tikkurila.

The camp host is the local cultural association Mukula which organises various cultural events for children and young people such as an annual rock festival in Jalasjarvi. The festival attracts several thousand guests. The organiser has hosted many great work camps earlier related to this festival.

Work

The theme of the camp is nature and youth in the countryside and the volunteers will get many opportunities for intercultural encounters. Volunteers should be prepared to present their own country and its culture to local children and youth during visits to local school and youth houses, or when organisizing an international evening events for the young people. The volunteers will get a chance to get to know the local nature through tidying surroundings.

Accomodation and food

Modest hostel style accommodation with a large common space, own sleeping bags needed. Showers in a separate building. Volunteers will prepare meals together in small teams.

Location and leisure

Ylane is a small village surrounded by lakes and forests in Western Finland, about 190 km from Helsinki. The nearest city is Turku which is about 55 km away. During free time volunteers can participate in various activities such as sauna, swimming, canoeing, berry picking and fishing. There are national parks nearby so the area provides excellent hiking possibilities. To reach the camp the volunteers can arrive in Helsinki airport and then by bus or train to Turku. From Turku there are few buses to Ylane daily.

Project hosted by

This camp is organized together by the Municipality of Poytya and local 4H-club. The local organisations have again joined forces to organise an international work camp in order to give local youth international experiences. The host organisation also runs a Nature Cabinet which runs nature related exhibitions.
