Arbeit

We have a lot planned for this year, which is why we are holding two spring camps in 2026. We need your help to get our VJF meeting place ‘Krimnitzer Weg’ ready for the coming season. The tasks include improving the accessibility of the meeting place, tidying up and removing leaves and branches from the grounds. In addition, various other activities may be required to improve the grounds, such as renovating and painting the building. However, the main task is to build a new fire pit with seating.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation
You will stay in one of the heated bungalows at the youth and meeting centre. There are six bungalows in total, each equipped with a bathroom with shower and toilet. Bed linen is provided, so you do not need to bring a sleeping bag.

Food
Meals are prepared in alternating cooking groups in a large kitchen in the main building. Feel free to bring simple recipes from your home country that you can cook together with the other participants during your stay. Vegan and vegetarian options are, of course, provided.

Lage und Freizeit

Location
You will be staying at the ‘Project and Meeting Centre’ of the VJF. The small bungalow village is located directly on the shore of the ‘Langer See’ lake in Berlin. It is a quiet place on the outskirts of Berlin with good connections to the centre of the capital.

Leisure time
Leisure activities will be discussed and decided upon by the participants at the beginning of the camp. Excursions to Berlin and the surrounding area are planned. Please find out in advance what you would like to see in Berlin and bring your suggestions with you!

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The project takes place on the grounds of the VJf meeting centre. Here, we hold our own seminars for our voluntary ecological year and for our Weltwärts projects throughout the year, as well as other work camps, training courses for camp leaders and return seminars. In addition, guests such as school classes or groups take advantage of the proximity to Berlin in the midst of nature and right by the lake.

Arbeit

The main works will be done in the woods. The volunteers will do various environmental works as well as renovation and construction work on the island and in the forests around the island. Possible tasks are removing bushes and invasive small tree species, collecting rubbish and wood, repairing works and so on. Volunteers should be prepared to be flexible and take part in any work that will support the foresters.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation: Your accommodation will be very basic. You will sleep in three large tents on camp beds. The infrastructure on the island is very basic without electricity and warm water, which also means no warm shower. There is no heating in the tents and on the island, you will use compost toilets. The accommodation is quite isolated, so it is good to think about some games and other free time activities beforehand! The foresters of the project have built a nice and comfortable block house where the group can meet and eat.

Food: A small kitchen is available, and food can be cooked on a gas hob cooker. There is also a fridge in the kitchen, so don’t worry about the food. Please bring recipes and spices / special ingredients from your country for some culinary exchange!

Lage und Freizeit

The workcamp is situated 25 km north of Berlin in a forest landscape surrounded by several lakes. Volunteers can go swimming and enjoy the incredible nature and landscape. There are many opportunities for outdoor sport activities like soccer, table-tennis and volleyball.
Please note that you will not be able to visit Berlin very often. This is a camp for Nature Lovers!

Important Notes:
You must know how to swim!

Please be prepared for 2 weeks with minimal internet and cell phone coverage!

German language skills will be appreciated because the foresters you will work with speak only little English.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

You will support the foresters of the area. The island Liepnitzinsel is situated in a picturesque lake, the Liepnitzsee, in the north of Berlin. It is surrounded by a beautiful landscape with many forests and lakes. On the island there are many permanent campers during the summer. Please treat everyone including nature and the surrounding with respect. Crossing the lake you must take the ferry. The ferry runs between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

We will pick you up at the city train station (S-Bahn station) “Bernau” at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. (afternoon). The foresters will take you by car to the camp site.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to explore the depot and the archive of the memorial site.

All participants should have a very good knowledge of English and should be interested in history and the present problems of neo-fascism and racism.

WORK
The common learning at the historical site of Sachsenhausen shall be supplemented by manual work which constitutes the participant´s contribution to the maintenance of the memorial. This part will be rather small. But it means that you should have cloth with you that could get dirty.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

ACCOMMODATION

Volunteers will cook the meals for themselves. You don ‘t need to pay by yourself, the camp leader will get a budget for food from VJF. Ideas for cooking are welcome. Please bring recipes and ingredients such as special spices from your home country with you for some culinary exchange.

Lage und Freizeit

Important! Volunteers must be able to ride a bike, because various shorter and longer
bicycle-tours are planned. Bicycles are provided, but helmets are not.
In the free time it's possible to go to Berlin or Potsdam. Volunteers will find many forests and lakes to walk, cycle or just relax. However, the free time activities will mainly depend on participants' ideas.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Sachsenhausen is a district of Oranienburg, about 33 km north of Berlin. In 1936, the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was established there. It served as a site of forced labor, imprisonment, and violence against people persecuted by the Nazi regime, including political opponents, Jewish people, LGBTQ+ individuals, Sinti and Roma, people with disabilities, individuals marginalized as 'social outsiders' and many others, especially from occupied countries during the war. Thousands were victims of murder and brutal abuse.
Before Sachsenhausen, in 1933, the first state concentration camp was set up in Oranienburg. This camp mainly held political opponents and was later used for Nazi propaganda. It closed in 1934, and many prisoners were transferred elsewhere. Sachsenhausen later became a central camp in the Nazi system, used for SS training and forced labor in industries like brickworks and arms production. In 1945, as the war ended, many prisoners were forced on death marches. Soviet troops liberated the remaining inmates on April 22, 1945.
After the war, part of the site was used as a Soviet special camp. Today, Sachsenhausen is a memorial and museum dedicated to remembering the victims. More information is available at :https://www.sachsenhausen-sbg.de/en/

Arbeit

The farm needs help caring for the animals (horses, pigs, donkeys, rabbits, chickens). We would like to use the summer to renovate our horse stable (i.e., whitewashing walls, woodwork, tidying up) and carry out maintenance work in the chicken coop. Work in the vegetable and herb garden may also be required, or assistance with processing, such as making jam.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation:
You will stay on the former estate of the Bülow family, which was built around 1860 and converted into a school hostel. The building is located at the gates of the rose city of Sangerhausen, surrounded by charming oak forests, orchards and fields.

Food:
The volunteers will prepare their own meals. It would be nice if you could bring some simple recipes and special spices from your home country for some culinary exchange!

Lage und Freizeit

You can explore the area and nearby towns for some sight seeing, go hiking, visit nearby cities such as Halle and Leipzig, but feel free to bring games with you too.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

In the early 1990s, the Verein Jugend- und Schulbauernhof im Gutshof Othal e. V. (Youth and School Farm Association) was founded on an old four-sided farmstead dating from the 18th century. With a great deal of manual labor and effort, the first members of the association repaired dilapidated stables, laid out gardens, and built paddocks.
The school farm is located about an hour's drive west of Leipzig and is surrounded by nature.
The area around the farm can be explored on foot or by bike. The natural environment of our farm and the expert staff from the region offer a variety of opportunities for nature discovery and recreation, such as baking bread, churning butter, harvesting, and processing fruit. There is also a Kita with children aged 3-6 years from the village integrated into the building.

Remember them! In this workcamp you will get involved in the preservation of the former Nazi women's concentration camp Ravensbrueck. You will deal intensively and artistically with biographies of imprisoned women and survivors who were imprisoned in the Ravensbrueck concentration camp. Performing your own art project or a research based on the topic that is interesting for you will be appreciated.
During the work part you will perform various maintenance works in the exterior of the memorial site and collections.

You will live in a shared rooms in the youth hostel on the grounds of the memorial in the former houses of the concentration camp wardens. A room as well as a bathroom with shower and toilet is shared by 3-4 people. There is a big outside area with volleyball field as well as a common room with board games and table tennis.

Food:

All meals will be provided by the youth hostel - vegetarian and vegan option will not be a problem. If you have the space you can bring snacks to share for the group.

Lage und Freizeit

At the hostel area you can do sports and games (e.g. table tennis, volleyball, board games). There is a room with a projector, so you can watch movies too. The area near the camp is very picturesque and has many lakes. You can go hiking, cycling, swimming and canoeing there. Berlin is just one hour away by the train, so you can explore it. Another idea is visiting Baltic Sea; it takes around one and a half hours by train to get there.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The partner is the momorial and place of remambrance Ravensbrück. The former women's concentration camp Ravensbrueck was built in 1939 near the small town of Fürstenberg/Havel. Until its liberation in April 1945, over 120,000 women and children, 20,000 men and 1,000 underage young women from the so-called "Uckermark Youth Protection Camp" were imprisoned there. The prisoners came from more than 40 nations. They had to perform forced labour in various sectors, e.g. for SS factories or the Siemens company. Their daily lives were marked by hunger, mistreatment, and poor hygienic conditions. Tens of thousands of prisoners were killed. Today, the Ravensbrueck Memorial preserves traces and records, promotes remembering and research, and creates a place for active learning and encounters. Every year, international work camps are organized in cooperation with the memorial.
www.ravensbrueck-sbg.de

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

Travel to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and take the train to Fürstenberg/Havel (direction Stralsund or Rostock) which leaves every hour. The ride will take about one hour.
In Fürstenberg you will have to walk about 25 minutes!

Arbeit

The main work during the camp will be the preparation of the light festival; which will be on the last Friday. At the light festival the whole park will be lightened by candles and fire and at different places there will be theatre, music and installations. You will help to prepare the event with tasks as such as building up tents, carrying things, playing music for the event, painting signs and many more. Therefore, we need your handicraft skills and also creative ideas to prepare a little program as a part of the festival. The projects depend on the dynamics of the participants! If you play a musical instrument please bring it with you! You will work together with two project leaders and volunteers of the castle Dreilützow. They will join your group as members of the workcamp. The set-up requires a lot of hands-on work. Remember to bring clothes that can get dirty.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation:
The volunteers will be accommodated in shared rooms (4-9 beds in a room) in a little building next to the castle. This house is only for the workcamp group. The rooms can be locked.

Food:
You will be catered by Schloss Dreilützow, if you have a vegetarian/vegan diet, please let us know. Nevertheless, we can organize joint cooking sessions in the evening. So be inspired to bring nice recipies and eventually spices for it.

Lage und Freizeit

• Participate in a music and sound workshop (bring your own instrument or music tool)
• Visit the Ravensbrück Memorial (a former concentration camp for women).
• Discuss remembrance culture and meet a descendant of a former concentration camp prisoner.

STUDY PART
Besides the manual work the study component will be an important part of our project.

You will be accommodated in a youth hostel. The building is on the grounds of historical Sachsenhausen concentration camp complex and was built in 1938 as the official residence of the Concentration Camp Inspector, 2 km away from the memorial center.

The main project for the practical work will be on the “Buchenwald Railway Memorial Trail” where you will work for the preservation and maintenance of the former railway path. In addition, you will take part in a remembrance project when you produce memorial stones that commemorate children and young people who were deported to the concentration camp of Auschwitz and murdered there. Further information can be found here: www.buchenwald.de and (in German) http://www.gedenksteine-buchenwaldbahn.de/content/homepage.html

Study part
The program will focus on the National Socialist history (i.e. on the concentration camp system, the NS ideology and the NS society) and its effects and consequences until today. The responsible pedagogical assistant of the Memorial will show you the remains and explain to you the history step-by- step of the former camp, through different tours on the site. Moreover, you will visit exhibitions and watch documentary movies, and those who would like to may work with materials from the library or the archive. Furthermore, we can discuss the memorialization in Germany and your countries to exchange our country-specific perspectives on these historical events, also beyond 1945.
If you like: please bring interesting photos and materials to explain your country-specific perspectives to the other participants.
Open spaces can be organized, for example to discuss current social issues like racism or neo- fascism. In an excursion you will discover the history of the city of Weimar.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

You will stay in the International Young People’s Centre, situated on the area of the former concentration camp. You will share the room with 2 volunteers. Sanitary facilities including showers are in the rooms. You will not need any sleeping bag or bed linen.
We will cook together and therefore we need some great ideas and recipes to prepare your daily meals. The accommodation is only available during the camp period.

Lage und Freizeit

The free time activities will be decided by the group's interests and wishes. Weimar is a student and tourist city and has many leisure facilities. There are some possibilities to go out in Weimar, such as going to the theatre, exhibitions or to concerts. The city is famous for its museums of German cultural history, including the famous poets Goethe and Schiller and the Bauhaus architecture or the Weimar Republic. There are plenty of possibilities like going for walks in the woods, going swimming , etc.In the youth center there is a media room for music and film. The volunteers can do handicrafts in the arts room. In the building we have table tennis.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The volunteers will work at the memorial site of the former concentration camp of Buchenwald. It is located upon a hill around 10 km from Weimar, the city where Goethe and Schiller worked and lived. In the 1920’s the Nazi movement had already many supporters in the region. Today, the site of the Memorial is a cemetery, evidence for the crimes which were committed in Buchenwald, a place of grief and commemoration for the victims and a place of historical and political education and information outside the school-system.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

When you arrive by train in Weimar, there is a bus station in front of the train station. The bus No. 6 or No. 4 go every hour to the Buchenwald Memorial/ Gedenkstätte Buchenwald.
Please arrive on Sunday, 16st August, in the afternoon at 4 or 5 pm in the Memorial.
(Busses in the afternoon: 2:50 p.m. the No. 4, 3:50 p.m. the No. 6, 4:50 p.m. the No. 4 and the last bus at 5:50 p.m. the No. 6) Opposite the bus stop on the other side of the parking lot you can find the building of the International Youth Center. In the first week, you will work with local foresters in the wood of Jena. Your tasks will include various environmental works, e.g., maintaining footpaths, lookout points and shelters. Your help will be needed for different nature protection projects. Please be prepared for environmental works to help the rangers only outside.
In the second week, the volunteers will help the environmental organisation “Fuchsturmgesellschaft” to chop down trees for better visibility and let a bright landscape appear on the way leading to the tower and maintenance work in the flora-fauna habitat. Your help will be needed in the Education Path; also, huts need renovation or maintenance.
This is a camp for nature lovers! Work can be physically challenging at times. The work can also change depending on the needs of the foresters.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Volunteers will be accommodated in an isolated hostel on a hill in the western part of Jena. The Schullandheim Jenaer Stern is an educational centre in the middle of the forest. Each room has 4-6 beds, and your only neighbours will be the woodland animals. All bed linen will be provided. We have the chance to have campfires, play ping-pong and volleyball, go swimming and so on. A washing machine is available. There will be no internet access in the accommodation.
Please respect that you may share the space with children and act accordingly.

We can also make trips to other cities; for example, we can travel to Weimar, which is well known as the workplace of the poets Goethe and Schiller and the Bauhaus. You’ll be able to learn more about history, as we could visit the former concentration camp Buchenwald. The student city of Jena offers many cultural possibilities to explore. Free-time activities will mainly depend on your ideas and wishes.
