Volunteers will be working in:
● Guanacaste Water Center Signaling Project:
Recognize the need of specific signaling requirements inside the conservation area, and generate the materials for it. Signaling goals are focused in tree and special plant species recognition, but also environmental awareness and wildlife information.

● Nursery Work:
transplanting, arranging plants, plant maintenance, pruning, gardening, plant preparation.
Work on the reproduction of tropical plants that are used in the restoration of the environment and the water shed. Typical work includes seeds reproduction, plants maintenance and planting for their establishment in the field.

● During the dry season, we have other activities such as irrigation
Plants have requirement of irrigation during the dry season and the volunteer will support the efforts to make the new planted trees to survive the dry period.

● Social media support
Compile media resources to improve the social media and promotion strategies of the organization. This includes the visit and a follow up on initiatives and parallel areas of the Center.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers have a local host family to have accomodation and meals during the program.

Location and leisure

Junquillal, Guanacaste

Junquillal is a small coastal community located in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It is known for its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and laid-back atmosphere

Project hosted by

The Nandamojo watershed is located on Costa Rica’s northwest coast in the province of Guanacaste. The watershed encompasses 29,000 acres, from the community of 27 de abril to Playa Junquillal, where the river empties into the sea.

More than any other factor, it is climate that defines the challenges and opportunities in this part of Costa Rica. Temperatures can climb over 100 degrees and there are two distinct seasons: wet and dry. The winter dry season, which starts in November, is caused by trade winds that blow in from the Caribbean. As this air moves west across the country it loses moisture, reaching Guanacaste as a gusty dry wind that desecrates the landscape. In May, the trade winds shift and allow offshore weather from the Pacific to bring afternoon showers and humidity. For the next six months, rivers and lowlands areas are filled with water and the landscape is a jungle of green. This “tropical dry forest” supports a unique ecosystem of flora and fauna.

The turtle hatchery is about 5 minutes away from the house where the volunteers live.
In the village are 2 supermarkets, the next ATM and the next pharmacy are located in Cobano.

Some activities for volunteers to do in their free time would be surfing, hiking, horse-riding and going to Isla Tortuga. There is also a National Park called “Parque Nacional Cabo Blanco” located close to the project (about 9 km).

Project hosted by

The sea turtle conservation program is a scientific-based conservation activity in which the organizations involved try to increase the amount of sea turtle hatchings in order to give higher survival rates.

The camps are located within walking distances from the beach. Apart from the sea turtles, you will also have high chances of seeing tropical birds, iguanas and monkeys. The main goal of these projects is to help the recovery of sea turtle populations. The species of sea turtles that you can find on the Montezuma beach are Leatherback (very rare), Olive riddle (most common), Black turtle (more in December) depending in which season you visit.

International volunteers support:

Work

Volunteers will be working in:

- Participation in the Monitoring Projects of the Scientific Center Kekoldi related to three main topics:
a- Birds
b- Snakes
c- Local Forest (Biodiversity).

- Construction and maintenance of the trails for public and research use around Scientific Center.

- Support in environmental education activities for the community and visitors.

- Maintenance of the infrastructure of the project when needed, for example: to repair the wooden walls in the Scientific Center and similar facilities.

- Community work (Schools education workshops, building community spaces) when needed for the local community and if the current international volunteer is interested and has the needed skills.

- Option for the future: Construction and maintenance for Self-sustainable Food Supply for the Scientific Center (like a local community farm to produce their own food and educate people to see the importance of it).

Accomodation and food

Hosting situation provided by the Project.

The volunteer will live in a shared dorm, where he/she will most likely share the room with another person. Volunteers need to understand that they will live in the Scientific Center, which has all the needed conditions, but the place is located in the middle of a very rural and natural environment. A bit far from the nearest town but still reachable.

Also: Public Transportation is available, and volunteers can access some of the most famous local attractions for ecotourism in the area (for example Puerto Viejo and its beaches, Cahuita National Park, Puerto Vargas, Cocles, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, etc.)

Location and leisure

The project is located 1-1.5km from the nearest road, therefore you have to walk 30-40 minutes uphill through the forest to reach the station of the RAPTORS project. Furthermore, the next small town, Hone Creek, is located 15 minutes by foot from the nearest road (so in total about 50 minutes from the station). Puerto Viejo, which is one of the most famous (touristic) and most beautiful places of Costa Rica can be accessed quite easily from the closest road of the RAPTORS station, it only takes around 10 minutes by car and around 50 minutes by foot to reach it.

The project is built in a very isolated place. The station is located in the middle of the forest (with a kitchen, dorms, toilets, showers, a common area, etc.).

There is a lot of wildlife all around the project (snakes, lizards, frogs, monkeys, sloths, lots of insects like spiders, bugs, scorpions, etc. and of course lots of birds). Furthermore, 2 dogs are living in the project. The watchtower is located about 5-10 minutes from the station, where the volunteer will spend most of his time (in the main seasons from August – December and February – March).

Project hosted by

Raptors (birds of prey) constitute a diverse group of land-based predators that occur across a broad range of habitats throughout the Americas. All 33 species of raptors that occur in the United States are migratory; at least five of the species are largely transequatorial migrants, and all but six regularly migrate into Latin America and the Caribbean. Because they exist at the tops of many food chains, raptors are especially sensitive to alterations in ecosystem structure and energy flow. This, in turn, makes them particularly effective sentinels of ecological change. Unfortunately, raptors also are secretive, wide-ranging, area-sensitive predators, characteristics that make their populations logistically difficult and financially prohibitive to survey and monitor. As a result, a lack of information regarding regional and continental populations continues to plague management decisions, particularly in the tropics. Raptors are diurnal (active at daytime) migrants, and one potentially cost-effective method for monitoring regional, continental, and sometimes global populations of these birds is sampling their numbers using visual observation at traditional migration bottlenecks and concentration points.

Diurnal raptor migration has been studied extensively for many years in North America, Europe and the Middle East. For this reason, there is considerable knowledge of most routes, the extent of migratory periods, and the abundance of the various migratory species in these regions. Unfortunately, the situation in Central and South America is much different. Little information on raptor migration exists for this part of the world. Several authors like Carriker (1910), Skutch (1945), Slud (1964), Stiles and Skutch (1989), and Hernández and Zook (1993) have reported some aspects of the raptor migration in Costa Rica. Even so, information on the subject remains partial and rudimentary.

Although the Nearctic (northern parts of the American Continent and Greenland) migrants that pass throughout Costa Rica represent only a small proportion of the country's raptor diversity, the spectacular nature of their movements offers considerable opportunity for increasing regional and international ecotourism and, more importantly, local conservation community-based efforts.

From August to December, raptors mainly migrate over the Caribbean lowlands, where they gather along a single route passing through the Talamanca region, a 2,800 km2 mixture of forests, agriculture, banana plantations and undeveloped coastline, in southeastern Costa Rica. With the Talamanca Mountain Range on one side and the Caribbean coastline on the other, this funnel-like lowlands narrows near the Kéköldi Indigenous Reserve, to only 5 km (3 miles) between the mountains and the ocean. This "bottleneck" for raptors, which is used by most raptor migrants in the region, is an ideal place to count and monitor raptor migration.

From August to December 2000, the Migratory Raptor Conservation Project began standardized, full-season counts at a single watchsite in the Kéköldi indigenous reserve in southern, Caribbean-slope, Talamanca, Costa Rica.

The Migratory Raptor Conservation project started as a joint effort between local and international organizations and now is owned by the Kéköldi People and includes the active participation of the local communities. We are dedicated to uniting human development and biodiversity conservation in the Talamanca region in southeast Costa Rica, an extraordinary area that holds more than 2% of the world's biodiversity, and that contains a unique cultural mix of Native Americans, Black Caribbeans and Spanish-speaking “Campesinos”. Kéköldi Migratory Hawkwatch Costa Rica Feb 2nd, 2021

Conservation Objectives:
• Conduct season-long migrating raptor counts at the Kéköldi watchsite.
• Create a long-term database for raptor-migration and conservation efforts in Costa Rica.
• Compare the numbers of migrant raptors in the season from August to December to other long-term monitoring centers including Veracruz River of Raptors, Mexico, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, USA, and submit them to the HMANA (Hawk Migration Association of North America) network and have the Kéköldi watchsite described in Raptor Watch.
• Study raptor migration dynamics and their relation to the regional weather conditions and compare them with the temperate-zone migration ecology.
• Study the use of habitat by migrating raptors and other migratory birds, for urgent habitat conservation, especially in forest areas.
• Study local raptor species and possible threats to their populations in the Talamanca region and develop conservation initiatives.
• Encourage the continuous participation of local community members in all the project’s activities.
• Design and initiate a raptor-oriented environmental education program to introduce local people both to phenomenon of long-distance migration, to ecology of local raptors, and to the importance of habitat conservation.
• Promote the creation of exchange programs with other raptor conservation organizations for training of staff and local community members in conservation efforts.
• Develop ecotourism activities with the help of the local indigenous community, to create new income opportunities for the community and for the self-sustainability of the project.
• Share all our results with the local and international community.

Accomodation and food

Hosting situation provided by the Project.

Volunteers will be living in an eco-lodge, which belongs to one of the founders of the project. It is located just beside the project.

Location and leisure

It is located in the north of the city of San Isidro de El General, surrounded by mountains and agricultural fincas, dedicated to the production of coffee, fruits and vegetables and cattle raising.
San Isidro has a population of around 80,000, that means you can find all the needed services like supermarkets, restaurants, cafeterias, banks and ATMs, clinics and hospitals, etc.
Quebradas is the nearest village where you can find the church, the primary school and a couple of grocery stores.
FUDEBIOL is located 3 km away from Quebradas and 6 km away from San Isidro de El General.

Project hosted by

The Biological Center of Quebradas is managed by FUDEBIOL (Fundación para el Desarrollo del Centro Biológico Las Quebradas), which is a nonprofit grass roots organization started in 1989. Their mission is to stop the deforestation of the Quebradas River basin which is the source of drinking water for the whole town of San Isidro and most of the region of Pérez Zeledón. In the Center they have also built an educational hub. The project site is located 3 km uphill from the community of Quebradas, between 1000 and 2500 meters above sea level. Today the main goals of FUDEBIOL still are:

- Conservation of the basin of Las Quebradas River.
- Development of environmental education for children and the community. Establishment of different sustainable systems to guarantee conservation of flora, fauna, and water resources in the area.
- To support the community in projects
- Investigation of flora and fauna
- To become financially independent through eco-tourism. Research and promotion supporting conservation.

This is a grass roots organization located in the small village Quebradas close to the town of San Isidro (744 meters above sea level) which is part of the Valley named El General. This valley is surrounded by high mountains, such as the Cerro de la Muerte (3491 meters above sea level) and the highest mountain of Costa Rica, Chirripó at 3820 meters. The weather in the region is humid and although the rainy season lasts from May until December, there will probably be some showers during the dry season as well. The average temperature lies around 24 degrees Celsius, and the precipitation is 3800 mm a year. Quebradas has some indigenous heritage from the pre-columbine times and there are still some traces from those cultures that can be found in the community and the region.

Quebradas was initially founded by farmers from the “Zona de los Santos”. Today many people work in the closest town of San Isidro. They also make a living from agricultural products such as coffee, sugar cane, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

The project is especially proud of the diversity of birds and butterflies that live in their forest. Now, they also want to improve the bird watching opportunities in the area. Experts suspect there are about 300 different birds in the protected area. The Biological Center wants to observe the habits of these birds and create leaflets about the types of birds that can be found in the area during the different times of the year.

There are 3 dogs, 2 horses and 5 cows that live in the project of FUDEBIOL. You can also find white-faced monkeys and other small and interesting mammals of the tropics. The center has a garden with medical plants, and they also produce organic compost.

In addition, within the 76 hectares of the Reserve you can find a system of 8 trails (8.5 Km) and all of them have signs for environmental education.

Work

Volunteers will be working in:
Most work is done along with the crew of the Reserve on:
● To maintain and to create trails
● To repair infrastructure
● To help with the reforestation project of the local high school
● To assist at the main office in town with reservations and translations
● To assist in the reception with tourists (to give information, translate documents or info for the tourists, etc.)
● If you stay for a longer period and have specific skills, you may also help with research going on at the Reserve.
● If the volunteer has photographic skills, then they can help to make material for the park.

Accomodation and food

Hosting situation provided by Local Family.

We have several families in the area, but one of the main one's is doña Sonia's.
Doña Sonia’s family has a very simple house, which is right now under construction, but it is a very homy environment, thanks to the good atmosphere given by this family. Even though it looks like the family might be poor, we need to clarify that they own 8 hectares of land and their farm and animals in the place. They just like to be simple, as many people from our countryside are.

The farm has an amazing lookout over the region of Monteverde. Volunteers will have their own room, but if they are more than 2 or 3 volunteers at a time, they have to share the room.

Location and leisure

The project is located on the upper area of the Monteverde touristic zone (7 km north of the high school of Santa Elena). The area is quite calm but in the high season (December – July) there will be a lot of tourists (in the park and in the town).

The park is a pretty humid area, it rains a lot during the rainy season and there is a lot of biodiversity (flora and fauna). Santa Elena is a small, touristic, farming and calm town, it has many tourist attractions in the region, as well as supermarkets, banks and ATMs.

Project hosted by

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, located in Monteverde, is a project that includes conservation, eco-tourism and education. This project is an example of conservation of a protected area that is well administered and managed by a small community (Santa Elena Public High School) with their inhabitants directly benefiting from it.

With an area of 310 hectares, a great biodiversity of species, and the source of many streams and rivers, the Reserve supplies the local communities and their surroundings with a nature preserve among a mosaic of protected neighboring areas: The Children’s Eternal Rain Forest, The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, and Arenal National Park.

Together, these constitute a conservation area of approximately 28,000 hectares of forest, where populations of various animals that had been endangered, such as the tapir, jaguar and quetzal, have been revived. For all of these reasons the Reserve receives an annual visitation of approximately 40,000 tourists.

Thanks to the help of national and international volunteers, people from the community, and students, the Reserve has developed an essential infrastructure of trails, a visitors' center, store, and a small restaurant. Many volunteers with technical and professional experience also help with environmental education, sustainable development projects and the maintenance of the trails and other field works.

At Santa Elena Reserve helping hands are always welcome. You will not only have the unforgettable experience of knowing one of the most world renown centers of conservation and biodiversity, but you will also enjoy the opportunity of meeting a new culture. Costa Ricans, in general, and people from the Monteverde area in particular, are known for their friendship, respect, and kindness.

Accomodation and food

Hosting situation provided by the Project.

The accommodation is very simple and not a luxurious hotel. You will be sharing your room with several volunteers (shared dorm with 21 beds), of course you will still be having your own bed.

Location and leisure

The ASVO Buena Vista Project is located about 2.5 km from the center of Sámara, in the middle of Buena Vista Beach. In order to get to the project, the Buena Vista River has to be crossed (with a kayak or by walking through the river when there is low tide). Behind the project are private properties with local people which can be helpful in an emergency case.

The beach (which is in a bit of an incline) is limited by Río Taranta (in the west) and by Río Buena Vista (in the east). Another prominent aspect of the project is a lot of flora and fauna (cows, horses, crabs, birds, snakes, insects (i.e., purrujas), etc.).

The hospital is about 2 hours away (in Nicoya), so be especially careful when swimming in the ocean and working with certain tools, etc.

The hatching space (turtle nursery) is located between the beach and the accommodation. The kitchen, the bodega (storage space), the toilets and the shower are located downstairs, the dorms (with 21 beds) upstairs. Additionally, a volleyball field can be found in the project.
The sea at the Buena Vista Beach is not very calm, that is also the reason why you must wait for the right moment to swim in the ocean, and if you swim you have to be careful, because otherwise it can be dangerous (i.e., a lot of tree trunks).

The project is not very close to a village, so it is very quiet and secure, and the environmental pollution is also less in comparison to other places.
Electricity is limited as it is supplied by solar panels and therefore depends on the sunlight. The electricity powers a couple of light bulbs and is also used for charging phones.

Project hosted by

The sea turtle conservation program is a scientific-based conservation activity in which the organizations involved try to increase the amount of sea turtle hatchings in order to give higher survival rates.

The camps are located within walking distances from the beach. Apart from the sea turtles, you will also have high chances of seeing tropical birds, iguanas, monkeys... The biodiversity is a very important point of these places. The main goal of these projects is to help the recovering of sea turtle populations. The species of sea turtles that you can find on these beaches are Olive riddle, Leatherback, Black or green sea turtle, Loggerhead, Hawksbill turtle depending on which project and season you visit.

International volunteers support:

Buena Vista beach which is a nesting beach of approximately 1.8 km of length and limited in the north by the blind estuary and in the south by the river Buena Vista. The back of the beach is limited by a system of mangroves, which depend on water from the river and tides, beach slope is low ranging between 3 ° and 4 ° to swell, so the currents are strong which makes it an ideal place for surfing. The project is in the northern part of Costa Rica, in the canton of Nicoya. It’s located about 2,5 km from the Centre of Sámara (45 minutes).

The Extra fee indicated covers a period of TWO WEEKS, and includes:

- Transfer from the airport to a hostel in San Jose.
- Two nights in a hostel in San Jose, breakfast included.
- Orientation day, a day in which we give a cultural introduction to Costa Rica, safety and transportation recommendations, directions to the project and a tour of San Jose with lunch included.
- Accommodation and meals at the project.

The program has flexible dates depending on the availability of the project, with flexibility from 2 weeks to 4 months, but this includes an additional fee to the indicated fee.

Directions to meeting point

We meet the volunteer at the airport exit.

Additional comments

The ASVO Sea Turtle Stations are permanent projects, so they receive volunteers all year long. They have a capacity of around 20 volunteers per week and there are no limitations in the number of female or male volunteers, but yes, we recommend volunteers to be adults (+18).

Requirements

● Has to be an organized, respectful person (Very important).
● Volunteers are needed with a strong desire for collaboration (teamwork), good attitude, and adaptability to coexist with certain conditions, those volunteers who have prior knowledge in biology or conservation of turtles (not a must) are preferred, it is considered an advantage if the volunteer has expertise in construction or carpentry.

- Intermediate Programme (8-10 years-old)
- Final Programme (11 and 12 years-old).

In addition to the regular classes, they offer activities such as theatre classes, excursions, workshops for parents and families, multicultural festivals and games.

The team consists of the director, administrators, security staff, teachers, specifically trained teachers (music, arts, sports and technology), and the librarian.

They communicate intensely with the families based on mutual respect in order to include them in their sons’ and daughters’ wellbeing and educational process, to let them understand the institutional backgrounds and, on the other hand, to receive the parents’ support for the maintenance of the school. This goal is reached by means of a focus on hybrid and virtual communication, to keep the families updated about the educational improvement.

Important to mention the strong connection with the UCR (University of Costa Rica), with which the school collaborates in pedagogical subjects, innovation and investigation processes, psychology, nursery and orientation processes. Therefore, there are usually university students completing their internships.

Location and leisure

Ara Manzanillo is in Manzanillo, Límon Province, Costa Rica. Joining our team offers nature lovers and conservation enthusiasts a remarkable chance to immerse themselves in the world of species reintroduction, live within a jungle refuge nearby scenic beaches, and closely engage with some of Earth’s most stunning and charismatic birds.

Puerto Viejo is the closest town, 12 km down the road. While there is a lot to see and do in Puerto, we seek volunteers who enjoy nature and the solitude at times of forest living, as town is a long and at times dangerous bike ride in the dark.

Volunteers should be comfortable living somewhat off the grid, taking in the beauty of the surrounds.

Function of the volunteer:

General Objective
-The cooperant is asked to be part of the work team, getting involved in all areas of the farm.

Specific Objectives
-To understand the dynamics and processes of the farm in its different areas (all of them being interconnected), gaining autonomy to perform tasks and/or teach others.

Accomodation and food

Hosting situation provided by the Project.

Volunteers will be accommodated in shared cabins with other volunteers, they will have a common bathroom. The cabin is very rustic and simple, and volunteers will have their own bed.

The weather is really rainy during rainy season (from May to Dec) which makes also the place to be fresh, by having temperatures of 10¨C to 28¨C average. During dry season the place is still fresh as it is located in the mountains of the province of Cartago (around 1400 meters from the sea level).

Location and leisure

La Flor de Santiago is a very small village located about 15 minutes away from Paraíso de Cartago and around 35 minutes by bus away from the city of Cartago in the province of Cartago.

In La Flor de Santiago we can find a little primary school, a small grocery store and the bus stop to connect with the other towns around. Actually Cervantes is the nearest town where volunteers can find cafeterias, supermarkets, and a cash point (ATM). Still volunteers will have Paraíso with a bigger variety of services available when needed.

Project hosted by

Finca Agroecológica La Flor, as its own name indicates, is an agroecological project managed through the Asociación para el Desarrollo de la Conciencia Ambiental y Humana (ASODECAH), a non-profit association, formed 25 years ago and made up of Costa Rican citizens.

As well as people from other countries established in Costa Rica.
The association's objective is to conserve and increase the biodiversity at the farm, as well as to carry out activities aimed at all audiences that promote respect for the environment.

The project focuses on organic agriculture, taking care of the farm animals, the use of organic fertilizers, reforestation, the production of microorganisms and bioconstruction and other practices related to permaculture, all in the spirit of living sustainably and in community.

Finca Agroecológica La Flor began as a project in 1998, when ASODECAH was formed in the town of La Flor, a small town in the province of Cartago. Its founder Brigitte Draabe, is a German citizen, who bought the farm when it was a pasture, with the intention of reforesting it and creating a "lung" in one of the main agricultural areas of Costa Rica.

Brigitte has involved the community of La Flor from the beginning, creating jobs and involving the locals in sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The project has always been nourished by the knowledge of the locals, who know well the crops grown in the area, the planting season and the area and a host of other details that helped to recover the land on the farm.

The project has always had a social objective.

For example, we corporate with Schools, colleges, universities, and families with whom we have developed activities aimed at raising awareness about the impact of human beings on the planet and to seek more respectful and friendly alternatives for the environment and other living beings.
Finca La Flor is a space to share moments, knowledge, experiences, to deepen in the present moment and to live day by day in a simple way and in connection with nature.

Directions to meeting point

We meet the volunteer at the airport exit.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of Spanish and / or English.

Interest in permaculture, especially organic agriculture and animal care.
It is important that the person is open to share as there are always many visitors of all ages on the farm.

We also ask our volunteers to be aware of the amount of waste they generate. At the Finca we try to re-use everything and if it is not possible, we recycle it.

It is very important to us that visitors do not leave any belongings on the farm that they no longer use (old clothes and/or shoes, old shoes, etc.).

The work on the farm is physical, so it is important to be very careful when performing the tasks for example not to hurt yourself, especially when handling tools.

It is essential that volunteers have insurance.
