Work

Tasks and timeline:

Friday 13th: Arrive in Goulburn, stay the night with a local host and meet the local IVP team.

Sat 14th and Sun 15th: Travel to Bungendore and meet the Show committee. Clean kitchen, dining room, pavilion areas.

Mon to Thurs: some free time with possible small tasks. Some local trips will be organised. Mid-camp discussion and evaluation.

Friday 20th: set-up infrastructure (seating, tables, displays, fences).

Sat 21st: assist with receiving and displaying entries.

Sunday 22nd: Show Day - help with tasks as necessary. Volunteers could run an event if they have the knowledge/ interest.

Monday 23rd: Pack, clean away and tidy up show area, displays and animal enclosures. Final evaluation with IVP and Show committee. Pack and clean-up accommodation.

Accomodation and food

Camp beds in a building at the showground. Stretchers, mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets will be supplied. There are good hot showers and a camp kitchen. There is a lock up area for your valuables.

Showground is 5km from town so you will be dependent on the local community for many things, including shopping. There is a permanent caretaker at the showground.

Provisions will be supplied. Food will be simple and you will cook for each other on a roster basis.

About your host:

Bungendore Pastoral Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Bungendore Show will take place on Sunday 22nd Oct. The Show is run by local volunteers. It normally takes place annually but due to the pandemic, fires and floods, there has been no show for the last four years. There is great excitement that the Show will run again this year.

Volunteer work:

For the volunteers, it will be fun and rewarding to work with local community-minded people and will be a true cultural immersion. The work will be 6 to 7 hours per day with tasks as required, mostly physical with some moderate lifting. Please only apply if you are happy to work moderately hard and to take instruction.

Additional comments

The workcamp has no additional costs on arrival, however volunteers will need to pay for their own food.
Cooking will be communal, sharing a cooking roster for meal preparation.

Requirements

What to bring:
Wide brimmed sun hat, closed work shoes/boots and appropriate work clothes. The weather can be very changeable, one moment very hot and the next, a cold snap, so bring clothes for all climates, including possible rain. We will have some emergency clothes in case you can’t carry clothes for all possibilities. We will also have sunscreen and you are strongly advised to use it.

Work

TASKS:

One week before the market:
- Put up posters and signs around town.
- Other promotion including handing out leaflets at events.

On market day
- Measure and mark out stall spaces
- Assist with set up
- Roster on gate to count attendees
- Roster on IVP stall selling goods, including collect money and write receipts / keep records
- Clean up after market (including toilets)
- Gather feedback from shoppers and stall holders
- Leftover food to food bank or cook up for dinner
- Take down signage

After market
- Write up evaluation
- Report on what went well /could be better
- Review system for selling goods on IVP stall
- Prepare for next market

Accomodation and food

Accommodation will either be provided in a shared space / building with full ammenities or camping.

International Volunteers for Peace (IVP) is initiating a local Farmers Market in Goulburn, NSW with a launch on Saturday, 28th October 2022.
There are no paid workers involved in the planning and setting up of the markets.
Volunteers are needed to support the build-up and launch to ensure it is a success.

Work

The work will be approximately 7 hours per day with tasks as required, mostly physical with some moderate lifting. The work is quite physically demanding so please do not apply unless you are happy to work and take initiative. Together with local volunteers, the work will include erecting tables, setting up displays, fencing, laying carpets, packing and unpacking, raking up straw in the animal enclosures and more. During the two days of the Show you will help for a few hours, on a rotating roster, to run an information stall for IVP.

Accomodation and food

The team will live together in a small building at the showground. Stretchers, mattresses, sheets, pillows and blankets will be supplied. There will be a roster for shopping, cooking and cleaning. Toilets, showers and a washing machine are in the building. The town centre is a 20-minute walk away and there you can find supermarkets, post office, cinema, nature walks and a swimming pool.

Location and leisure

Goulburn is a Regional City in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales (NSW). Goulburn is a two-hour drive from Sydney and one-hour from Canberra. It’s also a stop on the Sydney to Melbourne train line and the journey takes less than three hours. The Goulburn Showground is located about 20 minutes walk from the train station.

Goulburn Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Society began in 1880. They organise the Goulburn Show each year, showcasing the very best of agricultural produce, local creative talents, school artwork and related activities. Goulburn Show is one of the largest community events in the region.

For the volunteers it will be fun and rewarding to work with local community-minded people. The Show will take place on 2nd and 3rd March 2024. You will work behind the scenes and help put the Goulburn Show together, set up infrastructure for the show and pack away afterwards. You will have free tickets to the Show on the weekend.

Additional comments

You will have free tickets to the Show. You will learn about agricultural issues, in particular wool growing which has an important place in the history of Australia and Goulburn. There will be a whole day sightseeing trip, possibly to Canberra, and time after work for local sightseeing / shopping. Local volunteers will assist with transport and sight-seeing where possible. You will meet local people and may be invited to visit farms and there will be opportunities to see local wildlife and a variety of farm animals.
