Work

Volunteers will join a local conservation team to help protect the endangered Southern Greater Glider. Activities include tree planting to restore glider habitat, spotlight surveys for glider monitoring, installation and checking of nest boxes, eDNA sampling of waterbodies, and setting up acoustic and camera traps. Volunteers will also support community engagement events, assist with citizen science activities, and help local schools learn about wildlife conservation. In case of bad weather, activities may include indoor citizen science training, data entry, nest box maintenance, community workshops, and mapping exercises.

Accomodation and food

Simple accommodation in a farm house. Separate sleeping areas for female and male volunteers.

Volunteers will cook together, organising a roster for cooking and cleaning. Shops are not close by so ingredients will be provided, and vegetarian or special dietary needs can be accommodated. There will be some shared meals with the local community.

Location and leisure

The work site and the accommodation are in the countryside and the nearest villlage is around 10km away. Some trips will be arranged to the village or the town of Goulburn 50km away. Other possible activities include excursions to sites of interest, local bushwalks or swimming spots, a trip to Taralga Museum. A welcome gathering and community BBQ will be organised, providing an opportunity to share cultural experiences.

Requirements

No special skills are required but volunteers should be comfortable participating in physical activities such as tree planting, light walking and other hands-on conservation work. An interest in nature, conservation and outdoor work is essential. Volunteers will receive on-site training. Safety and fieldwork orientation will be provided. The work is generally outdoors and moderately physical, so participants should be comfortable working on uneven ground and in variable weather conditions. For safety reasons, it is of utmost importance to follow instructions, wear appropriate clothing including closed boots, stay together and do not wander off alone.
