As an intern, you will be a valuable member of the crew throughout the summer and will be responsible for managing teams of volunteers. We have groups of volunteers staying for different durations, and we need our interns to be the backbone of the crew, providing ongoing knowledge of the site and undertaking longer term projects. On-the-job training and an induction will be provided in the first week, with continual guidance from a dedicated member of the trustee board. You will have the opportunity to measure your progress through regular check-ins with both your line manager and the interns manager. Interns will join the volunteers during the setting up and taking down of the site.

Catering and Sustainable Food Management
Our field kitchen is an integral part of our events and is an incredibly rewarding area to work in for those with a passion for food and who are looking to gain catering experience. If you enjoy seeing people well fed and you want to show off your culinary skills, then this role is for you.

But it’s not just for budding chefs! We also need people to help us with the daily running of our low-impact kitchen. This could be organising volunteers, developing rotas and organising food procurement and storage.

Some more information:
● We have a large kitchen tent with two industrial sized ovens, ring burners and fridges.
● We cater vegetarian meals for approximately 30 people in between events and up to 200 when events are held.
● We have tried and tested menus and recipes to help you in the role, but you will also have the opportunity to use your creativity and design your own menus.
● You could be involved with planning vegetarian/vegan menus, stock management, placing orders with our local and organic suppliers, food preparation and baking, and ensuring the hygiene and tidiness of the kitchen area.
● You will gain a qualification in food hygiene and safety as well as practical experience in managing dietary requirements and allergies and sourcing sustainable and seasonal produce.
● You will lead and motivate a team of volunteers, developing rotas and meal plans to ensure the tasks of the kitchen are completed on time and that everyone is well catered for.

Skills required:
● Experience of working with food is desirable but not essential as your skills will develop over the course of the internship
● A passion for food and cooking is important
● A high level of organisation
● A real enjoyment of working with others
● Great people skills
Skills gained:
● Managing a team
● Event catering
● Food preparation
● Ethical procurement
● Resource management
● Dealing with customers

Accomodation and food

Green & Away takes place outdoors and under canvas. You will need your own tent, however, we may be able to arrange one for you if you are unable to bring one and you let us know in advance. Full board is provided (three vegetarian meals a day and regular tea breaks with cake!). The site has hot showers, clothes washing facilities and composting toilets. All safety equipment you may require will be provided.
A licensed bar with subsidised pricing, comfortable seating areas, and arts and crafts facilities come as and when we have built them. There is WiFi and phone/laptop charging facilities. Please note, when you first arrive the field will be almost empty (although our toilets and showers will be operating), so please be prepared for this).
Although Green & Away is set up on the outskirts of a small village near Worcester, the nearest shop and post office is two miles away.

Location and leisure

The site is situated close to a small village which has some things going on but we are 5-6 miles from Worcester with a direct bus. Therefore volunteers can travel quite freely to a big city and beyond very easily. More immediately the site is located close to a cafe, with walking trails and a river for swimming bordering the site. There is a first aid kit on site and a defibrillator at the nearby cafe, the nearest hospital is 9 miles away.

Work

The main task of the camp is first to practice a common repertoire to perform at the festival. There will be several performances during the festival. Ideally, volunteers will form also a bigger orchestra with the local musician members and rehearse a small repertoire for the festival with them. In addition, there will be light physical tasks related to the background arrangements of the festival. The camp is also aiming to collaborate with the local Finnish Red Cross unit to include Ukrainians fleeing the war.

Accomodation and food

Beds with bedding will be provided. A kitchen is available for the volunteers to cook in shifts apart from lunch, which is served near the festival area.

Location and leisure

Municipality of Rääkkylä, Eastern Finland

Project hosted by

Rääkkylä Kihaus is one of Finland's most important annual international folk music events. Under the name Kihaus, the event has been organized annually in July since 1991. Previously, the event was known as Heinähupa, which started in 1970. See the festival webpage here: https://www.kihaus.fi/ (in Finnish)

Additional comments

We trust that the impact of our travels is a shared concern and if you can, please prefer more eco-friendly options than taking a plane.

We recommend double-checking that your insurance covers your travel costs in case of unlikely but possible camp cancellation e.g. due to sudden changes in the Covid pandemic.

Additional fee: Some SCI workcamps will have an additional fee of €50.00. This will cover e.g. international insurance costs of the volunteer and a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects. If you apply through a partner organization you will pay the fee directly to the hosting branch according to their instructions. Check here whether you're applying through the SCI branch or partner: https://sci.ngo/about-us/our-movement/where-we-are

Requirements

Applicants to the camp are expected to have basic skills in a folk musical instrument (can also be a vocal instrument) and 1-2 pieces of repertoire to present and practice with others at the festival. Please specify your skills in a free-form motivation letter.

Work

The aim of the Work Camp is to help create the best possible Build-it Festival.

Day 1-12: During this period, the volunteers will be setting up the festival by sorting wood, moving materials around, and making signs and decorations for the festival. You will also be working in the building area, bar, outdoor kitchen, dishwashing area, toilets, sleeping area, and music stage. During this period, the volunteers will take turns in cooking for each other.

Day 13-18: During this week, the festival will take place. You will be working in different areas of responsibility. The areas are ”check-in zone,” “kitchen”, “tool shop” and “many hats”. There will be a possibility for you to create your own workshop too and to build something. You will be able to enjoy all concerts every night, we have a lot of nice music planned - especially if you like to dance. The festival will also need one or two volunteers to work with taking photos and videos for social media posts.

Day 20-23: During this week, you will be taking the festival apart, and cleaning up the festival area. Focus on zero waste and sustainability means that you will be saving building projects for next year's festival. You will also be evaluating the Work Camp stay and the festival in general.

Days off: day 1, day 5, day 9, day 12, day 16, day 19, day 23 (evaluation and fare-well party)

Accomodation and food

Accommodation:
Everyone should bring a minimum of a sleeping bag and a pillow. We offer tents or a big common sleeping room only for international volunteers.

Food:
Everyone will take part in cooking, according to a plan we decided on together, as part of the work you will do during your stay. During the festival, we will have food served three times a day. All meals are vegan or vegetarian. Drinks can be purchased on-site at discounted prices during the entire stay.

Bathroom Facilities:
We have washing machines for free, kitchen facilities, toilets, and showers. The beach is located just a few hundred meters from the sleeping area and is lovely during summer.

Location and leisure

The festival is located by the sea, in the countryside, but only five km. from Ebeltoft – a lovely small city known as a great tourist destination.

In your spare time, there are many things to do and see, and you can borrow a bike to explore the surrounding area. We cannot guarantee bikes for everyone at the same time, so you might need to share. Some days it might be possible to borrow a car to take a trip. Mols National Park or Denmark's second-largest city, Aarhus is possible to visit.

Your Work Camp leaders will help you and the group with organizing activities in your spare time. It is free to enjoy the beautiful nature of Ebeltoft, but some activities might require an extra charge. The host will not cover additional charges.

Project hosted by

The Build-It Festival is a unique and interesting event that combines hands-on building activities with a focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. By giving attendees the opportunity to learn new skills and create something from recycled materials, the festival not only provides a fun and creative experience but also helps promote the importance of reducing waste and conserving resources.

In addition to the building activities, the festival also features music and concerts, workshops, talks, and camping by the sea. It's a perfect escape from the city and an opportunity to connect with people. Last year, the festival saw 800 attendees, and this year the organizers are hoping for even more.

The Build-it Festival is made possible by a dedicated crew and many volunteers. During the festival week, all attendees help, which creates a unique co-ownership of the festival and the overall festival experience. Furthermore, the festival is located at Grobund Factory, which is a community of entrepreneurs and a soon-to-be eco-village.

Work

Hard manual work. During the build-up, volunteers will provide logistical help: installing water and electricity, installing fences around the festival grounds, stages, backstage, kitchen, bar, etc. After these tasks are completed, volunteers will help with putting the final touches to the festival: decoration, attaching posters…
During the festival volunteers will be completely free of any work in order to attend the concerts and enjoy the festival life! After the festival has been concluded (i.e. as of Monday July 10), volunteers will assist in dismantling and cleaning the festival ground. After concluding the clean-up (typically 2, maximum 3 days), the remainder of the camp will be devoted to cultural visits in the region and to some cities in Belgium.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will be accommodated in a building located next to the festival. There will be a cooking team who will cook for all the volunteers. Volunteers will need to bring a mattress and a sleeping bag and will be sleeping on floor level. There will be bicycles provided in order for them to move around.

Location and leisure

Project hosted by

Na Fir Bolg is a three-day family oriented alternative music festival organized in the Flemish Region. The first edition of this festival was organized in 1996, as a fundraiser for several environmental organizations. Throughout the years the festival grew but the spirit of the festival didn’t change. Nowadays there are two stages which provide a variety of local and international folk music. About 15,000 visitors come to enjoy the friendly atmosphere. People involved are all volunteers, committed to bringing an alternative to the big commercial festivals. The profits of the festival go to environmental and other charity organizations. This year the festival takes place from July 7th to 9th.

Additional comments

Additional fee: Many SCI workcamps will have an additional fee of €50.00. This will cover - local hosting costs; International insurance costs of the volunteer; a small travel fund to enable disadvantaged volunteers to join projects; administration costs of SCI International.
If you apply through an SCI branch, the fee will be included in the fee you pay to your sending branch. If you apply through a partner organisation you will pay the fee on arrival at the project; direct to the hosting branch or through a PayPal transfer system. When accepted on the project the host branch will give you more details of the various payment options.

Requirements

This camp is for all the volunteers wishing to discover the organization of a solidary festival and who are not afraid of hard manual work. During the build-up and dismantling days, the volunteers will be working a bit longer than the other days.

Work

Needless to say, in order for the Festival to be a life-enhancing and indeed for some a life-transforming experience, much hard work is required. From the day we arrive in an empty field with a small vanguard, our numbers gradually swell until we have around eight hundred volunteers welcoming the three thousand visitors. The set-up crew erect the structures that will act as kitchens and venues. They establish the infrastructure such as plumbing, compost toilets, showers and saunas. They make the site beautiful and safe with flags, bunting, paths, fences and lighting. Then during the Festival we have stewards to welcome and guide festival goers, to manage parking and traffic and to attend to people's well-being. Toilet wizards maintain the compost toilets. A team of recyclers sorts materials so as to minimize landfill. The café crew feed volunteers and festival goers alike. The site crew look after the infrastructure, tents, water etc. During the set-up phase volunteers will get one day off and during the festival two days either as full days or half days, depending on the needs of the particular teams.

VAP volunteers will be invited to work in a number of areas before and during the festival for example: the Healing area, the Buddhafield cafe, site crew, recycling and ‘toilet wizards’ décor, welcome and departure teams.

During the Festival the volunteers will have work shifts, but will also have time to enjoy the huge variety of events taking place and facilities available as outlined above. Volunteers are asked to attend daily morning meetings, the exact time depending on what area of work they choose to join. The work is very team-based. The whole enterprise runs on goodwill, awareness of each others’ needs, good communication and mutual support. During set-up and take-down there will be organised events around Buddhist themes, attendance at which is completely voluntary. There are generally also alternatives such as spontaneous musical gatherings, often around a fire. They will also have someone onsite who is their direct contact for support and pastoral care. They will meet as a group together each day.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers should bring their own tents, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and everything you would need for a camping trip. Buddhafield will provide vegan food and hot drinks and snacks are available throughout the day.
Showers and toilet facilities are outdoors and though cleaner and better cared for than other festivals they are outdoors and basic.

Project hosted by

BACKGROUND:
Buddhafield (www.buddhafield.com) is an English Buddhist collective that is part of the international Buddhist movement, the Triratna Buddhist Community (http://thebuddhistcentre.com). Buddhafield emerged out of the coming together of Buddhism and ecological awareness in the 1990s. Buddhafield is inspired by the ideal of living and working more simply and kindly in a community informed by awareness of our interconnections with each other and with nature. We run a programme of camping activities in the South West of England and own two beautiful pieces of land, which we are committed to managing sustainably and which we use for several events each year (not the Festival itself). We are perhaps best known for organising the much-loved Buddhafield Festival, now in its 20th year, and for the Buddhafield Café, which provides vegan food at festivals like the Glastonbury Festival.

THE FESTIVAL:
The Buddhafield Festival is held over a period of five days, on a beautiful site in the Blackdown Hills, in Somerset, England. The event brings together around three thousand people for a sharing and celebration of alternative social, cultural, political and spiritual values. The mix of activities around Buddhist, environmental, healing and social change themes together with general festival attractions such as singing, dance, yoga, drumming, live music, comedy, craftwork, chai cafes, saunas, hot tubs and a huge range of activities for children, attracts a wide range of festival goers. The feedback we get is that for many the event is a reminder that a more positive and kind alternative to conventional competitive and environmentally damaging ways of living is possible. In keeping with the Festival's Buddhist ethos the event is a drug and alcohol-free zone.

Directions to meeting point

The Festival site is in remote countryside, with only two buses per day going near the site.
A member of the Buddhafield team will meet people at the train station and help them get to the site. If you want to travel with a team member it is important that you arrive at Taunton train station not later than 16:45 on July 1st where we will meet you at the upper exit by platform 2!

Requirements

VAP HOSTING FEE:
Volunteers will be asked to pay a fee of £90 GBP upon arrival. VAP charges this fee as without it we would be virtually unable to organise any projects in the UK.

NB: Please check your travel requirements to the UK before applying.

Work

You will help the organisers in all phases of the festival. On the first days, the main tasks will
be setting up the stage and the campground on the site of the festival. You will also help to create
the always charming and handmade decorations of the festival site and help with the disassembly of
the whole structure and surroundings on the last day. While the festival is running, you should be
available to the organisation and will be asked to assist in different areas: bar, stage, organisation,
catering etc. You will work closely with the local people from the association! There is a plan for the
build-up of the festival, nevertheless the schedule will be adapted to the always changing logistics of
the event and you are expected to be flexible, patient and work autonomously within this plan.
Volunteers should be prepared to work long and unusual hours, but also have some time between
their shifts, which can be used to explore the festival and enjoy the music! Speaking or
understanding basic German will be a plus!

Accomodation and food

You will stay at the local brewery! It is a small and very basic accommodation
not far from the festival site that does not provide much comfort, but a very unique charm. The final
ceremony afterwards for all the helpers of the festival will also take place there. During the festival
food will be provided by the food stands throughout the day.

Location and leisure

Pegnitz is a small town in Franconia, Bavaria, near Nuremberg. You can find medieval and
historic buildings and churches in the centre of the city. The city is known for its beers: it has a long
tradition in brewery and the locals are very proud of it. The Bavarian region, in which Pegnitz is
located, is called “Little Switzerland” due to its beautiful surrounding that invites extended
adventures and hiking trips in the region. There are all kinds of trails and possibilities to experience
the unique nature.

Project hosted by

The local association Waldstock e.V. (https://waldstock.de/) promotes local youth activities
in the small town of Pegnitz. Its members are very motivated and involved in organizing projects like
concerts, film festivals or soccer cups. For more than 20 years, they have been coordinating the
“Waldstock” festival, a so called “Umsonst und Draussen” - festival (“outside & free of charge”),
which has become an important part of the cultural life in the town of Pegnitz and the region. Since
2013 the festival is supported by a small group of international Workcamp volunteers, who can enjoy
the truly unique experience of becoming a part of the busy festival team. The festival has only taken
place once, last year, since Corona, and it was a great success! Here you can find a sneak peek on last
years’ festival: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gst3Wuj6is4 .

Directions to meeting point

How to arrive at Pegnitz station: from Nuremberg main station 37 minutes via
regional train (RE) to Bayreuth. From Pegnitz station it is only about 1 km to walk to the brewery:

There will be one bicycle to go to the local store and get regular supplies.

Location and leisure

Kruševac is a city and the administrative center of the Rasina District in central Serbia. It is located in the valley of West Morava, on Rasina river. The city was founded in 1371, by Prince Lazar of Serbia (1371–1389), who used it as his seat. The etymology is derived from the Serbian word for "river stone", krusac which was largely used for a building at that time.

Project hosted by

Fakirs from the south are a non-governmental and non-profit association of citizens based in Kruševac, founded in 2017. At that time, we started to restore and adapt the ruined facility owned by Football club Borac from Bivolje, on the bank of the river Rasina, with a large number of local and international volunteers. Art workshops, lectures, concerts, festivals, film screenings, international volunteer camps, theater performances, inclusive workshops and much more take place in this unique art space for young people in Kruševac. The activities of Alternative cultural center "Gnezdo " - (AKC Gnezdo) are based on the principles of solidarity, togetherness, equality, openness, responsibility, innovation, creativity and partnership.

Young Researchers of Serbia (YRS) was founded in 1976. Our main aims are environmental protection and education, promotion of sustainable development, work with young people in an international context, promotion of scientific creativity and voluntarism and its values. Voluntary Service of Serbia is a volunteer exchange service center founded in 1990 as one of the sectors of YRS.

Work

PROJECT: This year the festival will have a new place in the historical natural park of Monte Sole, up in the hills of the town. The festival lasts 4 days. From Thursday to Sunday. In the morning there are lively discussions in Debate tents, in the afternoon sports tournaments and activities, and in the evening/night a range of live concerts, DJ sets, and sound systems. The main genre is Reggae but various others genres are in the festival (ska, hip hop, indie, Latin, dub). A temporary Camping is constructed and available for visitors who want to stay for the whole weekend. This year the festival is organized with Il Poggiolo – Rifugio Resistente a structure that gives hospitality in this historical park and will be also the bar & restaurant of the festival.
WORK: Volunteers will help the festival staff with the organization, building-up, dismantling, and running of the festival area as well as the promotion of the event in nearby communities.
The main work activities during the camp will be the preparation for the Reno Splash festival. Work will involve the mounting of the festival structures (stage area, entrance, stands, camping, and camper area, toilets, and 1 or more Moroccan tents that constitute the bar and the DJ set venue), as well as promotion of the festival via flyers/posters, distributed in the center of Bologna and in nearby communities, the painting of signs and posters and many other manual and creative activities. During the 3 days of the festival, volunteers will have the opportunity to be bartenders, sound engineer assistants, camping rangers, and many more roles. If you love to deal with people and to work with your hands this is your camp!
Photographers, graphic designers, video makers, painters, but also electricians, woodworkers, cooks, bartenders, creatives and work hard people are welcome. As you work in a festival, you should be prepared to work in the morning or at night, there will be turns and timetables but some flexibility will be required.

Accomodation and food

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: Volunteers will sleep in the camping area of the festival, in a special part that they will start building from their arrival. The camping is near the Rifugio Poggiolo. It would be great if you bring your tent but if you can't just inform us and we will find it. There will be an indoor shelter in case of extreme weather conditions.

Location and leisure

LOCATION AND LEISURE: Monte Sole is a historical natural park in the town of Marzabotto in the Appennino mountains near Bologna (30km) and Florence (80km). It lies in the valley of the Reno river and it is full of green hills and valleys. It is famous for its resistance in WWII and was the site of a massacre of 770 inhabitants by the Nazi Army. The accommodation is located in the countryside but Bolognan's thriving city life is near and easily accessible in your free time, or you could just chill out and take long walks in the mountains. The weather will be warm but as we are on a hill it can be windy sometimes. especially during the night. TERMINAL: Areoporto G. Marconi di Bologna BLQ. Stazione FF.SS di Pian di Venola (linea Bologna-Porretta).

Project hosted by

Montagna di Suono is a cultural association founded in 2008 that promotes music and arts in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano area (the mountains between Florence and Bologna). They organize musical classes for kids and adults, concerts, and the yearly antiracist Reno Splash festival, now in its 11° edition.
SUMMARY: Join an international workcamp to help redevelop the waterfront in the San Giovanni a Teduccio. New green areas for the daily life of the community. #antirazism # #greenareas #lunarcamp #ESCinTeam

Additional comments

This project is supported by the European Solidarity Corps. Food and accommodation are covered by the European Union. Transportation costs will be refunded according to the distance band rules of the program. No fees are required. The work camps are open for international volunteers (coming from EU ESC countries projects).

Work

Hungary’s biggest university party is waiting for you again, where you can be one of the volunteers and enjoy the best of both worlds at the festival!

The main duty assigned to festival volunteers is to ensure the cleanliness of the festival grounds by collecting litter, picking up garbage and ensuring that the surroundings are neat and tidy and with the help of you we can maintain a clean environment. By contributing to the event’s eco-friendly atmosphere, they are part of something pretty amazing. Volunteers will mainly be responsible for keeping the festival area clean in the morning, but they will have the opportunity to enjoy their well-deserved free time throughout the rest of the day. There will probably be around 150 volunteers from Hungary who will work with or near you.

Accomodation and food

You will have your own place at the staff camping but don’t forget to BRING YOUR OWN TENT! There is a shower in the camping. You can choose any kind of special food, we will try to make it. Please let us know as soon as you can. You will get one hot meal every day you work.

Location and leisure

The festival takes place in Sukoró, Hungary right next to lake Velence. Outside the 6 hours of work per day with your wristband you can enter the festival as much as you want, or dip in Lake Velence or make friends and just enjoy each other’s company.

Project hosted by

Festival Volunteer Center organize volunteer programs for the biggest festivals in Hungary. They work with volunteers, with more than 2500+ per year in around 100 possible positions at festivals like Sziget, EFOTT, Balaton Sound, Campus, etc. and also concerts in sport arenas. Over the past 10 years, they have built up a system and shaped it to its present form, which makes it possible for enthusiastic and help-offering volunteers to evolve, for festivals to find motivated workforce, and the joint work ensures countless future opportunities for all parties. They are shaping this process by making use of the diverse, creative, improvisatory ideas from all the participants year by year.

Directions to meeting point

The nearest airport is Budapest (BUD) in Hungary. To get to Sukoró from Budapest, you can start by taking the train to Kápolnásnyék and then transfer to a bus that will take you the rest of the way. Trains depart every hour from Budapest Déli station. We ask you to catch the train at the latest at 17.10 pm at Déli Station so the team can arrive around 7 pm at the festival location. It takes around 1,5 hours from the airport to the train station by bus, metro and metro.

Requirements

If you become a volunteer of ours you will have to register on our website (where you will get your contract) and take part in a group Google Meet call. Once you arrive to the festival, you have to visit a doctor for a quick and free examination. Also, don’t forget to bring 22 000 HUF or 55 EUR deposit for the weekly ticket you’re going to get. This is a must, without the deposit you can not work with us. At the end of the festival, if you did not break the contract you are going to get your deposit back.

Unfortunately, we are only able to work with volunteers from the EEA countries.
