Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Leadership is a non-profit organization bringing together young volunteers with the mission of involving youth in civil society through volunteerism, project design, and cooperation both locally and internationally. Leadership was founded on November 1, 2005, as a youth volunteer organization under the auspices of the public association Leader, a center of civic society initiatives.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

We confirm the meeting place when we send the volunteer an invitation to participate in the camp.
From the airport to the avtovokzal in Bishkek (bus station)

Option 1: From the airport, you must go to the avtovokzal (or the bus station), where you will then get on a bus that goes to Karakol. From the airport, you can either take a marshrutka, which is a large van type of public transportation. When exiting the airport, this van will be to the right. There is a small sign with a van/bus on it where it comes. The marshrutka comes about every 30 minutes. The cost is standard 60 com. Just tell the driver avtovokzal" and he will tell you when you are there. The ride is about 20 to 30 minutes. Note: If you ask taxi drivers where the marshrutka is or when its coming, they will all tell you that it doesn’t exist or isn’t working that day to try and get you to take a taxi instead.

Option 2: Option 2 is to take a taxi from the airport to the avtovokzal. This is an easier but more expensive route. A taxi from the airport to the avtovokzal costs about 700 com (for the whole car). So if you plan to meet up with someone, you can share a cab for the price of 700 coms. If you share with a stranger however they will try to charge you 700 coms each. For this option, people usually just hire the entire cab for 800 coms and it will take you straight to the avtovokzal. Note: You must haggle and bargain for taxi's. 800 is the usual price, but they will try to charge foreigners as much as up to 2,000 com and try to get away with that price. You must say 700 com and be confident and walk away if (when) they say no. The taxi driver will then say okay and take the 700, or walk away and find another taxi driver. With a taxi the trip is about 20 minutes.

From the avtovokzal (bus stop) in Bishkek to Karakol:

Option 1: At the bus stop in Bishkek, there are a line of about 15 marshrutka's (large van like types of transportation) each with its own destination. The second van goes to Karakol. It will be parked in the second spot underneath the sign that says Karakol. The standard price is 400 com (no aggling/negotiating required) and it will take you to the bus stop in Karakol. The entire trip is around 6 hours, and it stops half way through at a rest area where people can use the bathroom and grab a snack or bite to eat. If you have to go to the bathroom before then, just ask the driver to stop and they will stop on the side of the road (or a public outhouse if you are very lucky and there is one near). They often have them at gas stations so if you are shy about going behind a bush, tell the driver to stop at the next gas station with a toilet (which will be an outhouse).

Option 2: The second option is a taxi. Some haggling is again required (they won't try to rip you off as much as at the airport, but they might say a price several hundred com above the normal price). Again say you know the price is 600 and they will usually agree to that price. However, in the summer it can be around 600 com and sometimes even up to 700 com. Step wagons (cars with 7 seats) will cost about 600 com, where a car with only 4 seats will cost about 600 coms. Aim for 600, as it is possible. As above, the trip is about 6 hours, maybe slightly faster (I usually take the marshrutka as there isn't much of a difference but its cheaper). The taxi will also stop half way through at a rest stop and will stop alongside the road if you say you need to go to the bathroom (men will just turn away from the road several meters behind the taxi, where women will find a bush to hide behind when a bathroom stop is needed).

Note: Some taxi drivers will drop you off at the avtovokzal in karakol (same as option 1), but some will take you straight to your home address (for no additional cost). This is something that must be negotiated before you leave. Simply ask the driver if they will drive you to the avtovokzal, or all the way to your home.

Arbeit

The main goal of the foundation is to help provide free, fun, inclusive and impactful activities for every child in the local community and nearby villages.

The volunteer will help the foundation to communicate the joy and impact of the programmes by making little set piece videos and /or taking wonderful photos of the activities in action.

If you could help with other activities and with different volunteer roles, would be appreciated and there is definitely the opportunity to stay longer.

There are always other volunteers who help with the activities from the foundation and sometimes the hostel guests join, too.

5-6 hours of help a day, 5 days a week. Transport is covered by the foundation.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

The site is a stunning 2-hectare plot of land with a unique river beach and nature everywhere. You will enjoy daily visits from humming birds and howler monkeys.

It is a well-known hostel with DJs, bar and a lot of young people so be prepared for loud music sometimes, but good vibes are guaranteed.

The volunteer will stay in the hostel, in the volunteers’ dorm and will use shared bathrooms. The bed has a mosquito net.
There is free laundry service for the volunteers.
There is Wifi, but not brilliant.

The volunteer will receive 3 served meals per day in the hostel. There are discounted drinks and free drinking water.

Lage und Freizeit

The foundation and hostel are surrounded by nature, a river and the ocean is pretty close, too.
There also are a wide variety of activities available in and around the hostel: table tennis, pool, paddleboards, volleyball, football, tubing, kayak and loads of amazing beaches: Parque Tayrona, waterfalls, entrance to lost city, sunrise hike and much more.
The closest big city is Santa Marta with a national airport, you can reach it from Bogota, the capital, within an hour flight or from Cartagena by bus 5-6 hours. From Santa Marta you can get to the hostel by bus in 1.5h.

The nearest international airport is Tokyo (NRT or HNH). From Tokyo to the meeting point near the project, it takes 5 hours by express bus. Volunteers need to arrive at the airport in Tokyo by the end of Feb. 04 and can leave there from the beginning of Feb. 12.

Arbeit

The volunteers will mainly clear the snow on the roofs and the surroundings of the old, traditional houses. They will also carry the things from the town to Maki and join the house work such as cooking, washing, clearing, etc. Be ready to work for quite a long time (05:30-18:00 with some brakes) and hard! It'd be surely good exercise to make your body more healthy!

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Volunteers will sleep in a few rooms of the volunteers' house that is a very beautiful cultural heritage and equips the basic facilities such as water, electricity, toilets and a bath room! They will have meals, meetings and social life with Kyodo Gakusha members in the main building (just 30 meters far). Meals will be cooked by volunteers together with the members by turns. Sleeping bag is not necessary.

Lage und Freizeit

Maki is located in the beautiful place near “Japanese Northern Alps”, at about 900 meters asl. and there is something remained here that most of Japanese areas have lost in modernization.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with Kyodo Gakusha since 2000, a cooperative community where people with various backgrounds such as mentally disadvantaged, people who are tired of city life, who want to learn farming, who want to live in the nature, etc. They have 5 communities in Japan incl. Maki and Tateya and grow animals and vegetables in ecological, organic way.
Maki is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains!), so it once became an abandon village in 1970s and then, was revived by Kyodo Gakusha. The life is very hard with deep snow during the winter, so the members usually live in the other farm at the foot of the mountain and only sometimes come to Maki to clear the snow in these years. However, the water mill hut, that had been constructed just several years ago by a lot of work and donations, was destroyed in 2022 due to too much snow, they feel the needs to clear the snow more regularly, that's why the winter workcamp here has been revived since 15 years ago!

Arbeit

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in other possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing. Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact. In this project SEEDS will organise a night photography and aurora hunting (Northern Lights) workshop in the countryside near Reykjavík. This will take place during late evening and possibly into the night. Northern lights are a natural phenomenon depending on solar activity and meteorological conditions; we cannot guarantee you will see northern lights, but the night photography workshop will be organised anyway.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Lage und Freizeit

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you! While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers! You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a community dinner or a visit to a recycling centre, a geothermal power plant, a museum or exhibition. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, pandemic-related restrictions, as well as availability of our partner organisations. You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS’ social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on February 8 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own.

Weitere Infos

Participation fee EUR 300 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. It includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the visits available and the night photography workshop & aurora hunting excursion.

Anforderungen

Other excursions (e.g. to the Golden Circle, South Shore, Fagradalsfjall volcano, Reykjanes and/or Snæfellsnes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares if there is free time after the camp workshops/sessions. It may be very cold and/or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats), good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.
