Oi-cho, Anan city, Tokushima pref. Visiting Kakurin-ji temple.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with the local group since 2019. This village has been welcoming Ohenro (pilgrims) who visit 88 temples in Shikoku since long time ago. The pilgrims walk through this village before visiting Kakurin-ji temple; the 20th temple out of 88 temples of the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage. However, there are problems which should be solved such as aging and depopulation of the community these days, and locals haven't been able to find solutions for those problems. On the other hand, since more and more people from overseas visit for the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage locals are trying to find new ways for omotenashi (hospitality). Volunteers who have been working on the project have come up with ideas for the reuse of vacant and abandoned land. Local host Oi have finally decided that they can freely renovate and modify the vacant houses. Moreover, the site is in a good location, with mountains, a river and fields. It is up to the volunteers from now on to decide how to develop the project. The aim is for the volunteer members to clean up the abandoned houses and village landscape and transform it into a village that people will want to visit to take photos, as it used to be a village where people came and went since ancient times.

Arbeit

Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings.
SEEDS volunteers may carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the island without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture.
The working day normally runs from 09:00 - 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland's changeable weather, as we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our host. No previous experience is necessary.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Viðey Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Lage und Freizeit

Viðey or “Wood Island” is the largest (1.7 km²) island in the Kollafjörður Bay, just outside Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Viðey was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited.
There is a regular ferry connection between the island and the harbour of Reykjavík. The island is only a few hundred metres away from the city and the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Viðey so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serra’s work “Áfangar” and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine Peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Viðey are related to archaeological research.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

SEEDS volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Viðey for the 18th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavík. Viðey is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings.

Mornings will be devoted to renovating the association's premises. On the programme, you'll be repainting the interiors of this recently renovated building and helping to make it a warm and welcoming place. You'll also be lending a hand with the overall project for this third place Ecocycle, a collective space for sharing, through its shared gardens and participatory workshops.

You will be welcomed at the Vieux logis de Saint Amand. Sleeping accommodation in rooms of 2 to 3 people. Meals will be cooked and eaten collectively, so you can take it in turns to prepare some tasty dishes, so come along with your own recipes.

Lage und Freizeit

Coly - St Amand is located between Périgueux and Brive.

Leisure activities: Site visits, nature activities, you will build your own entertainment program with the leaders and the other participants. We favour a discovery of the territory and these actors over consumption activities.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Nestled in the hollow of a green valley, the town of St Amand de Coly is located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, a territory rich in history! Composed of two former municipalities that decided to join forces to form one. The town is home to the Ecocycle association, a third place that is developing a participatory activity project in Saint Amand de Coly and the surrounding area. These activities are strongly influenced by concerns about climate change. You will help the association and its volunteers to prepare the building to welcome its members. You'll discover the local people's sense of welcome and the charm of the countryside and heritage, as you work with the other volunteers to organise your programme of activities.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

You will have to take a train to Condat-Le Lardin (2 hours from Bordeaux and 4 hours from Toulouse). The leaders will meet you at Condat-Le Lardin train station in the end of the afternoon.

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing.
Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller volunteer work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact.
One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:
1. A day trip to the Hot River area, combined with a cleanup or work with an environmental project in the area, or
2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag.

Lage und Freizeit

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a geothermal power plant, a local fauna and/or flora exhibition or an outdoor Icelandic culture museum. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, as well as availability or restrictions of our partner organisations.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches.
Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS volunteers will stay in an old farm which has been transformed into an environmental-education centre. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Volunteers will sleep in shared rooms, up to 6 people per room. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Lage und Freizeit

The accommodation is located 1 hour drive south-east from Reykjavík. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre where visitors can have a look at an extensive stone and stuffed animal collection. The house sits under Ingólfsfjall, The Mountain of Ingólfur, with a view to Eyjafjallajökull where the volcanic eruptions started in March and April 2010.
The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found spread around the area, which is a popular attraction among foreign and local visitors.
The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafés and bars.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The Awareness, Engagement & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action! One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline.
SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country.

SEEDS volunteers will be mostly working on the hiking trails and walking paths in this beautiful mountanious area. The main tasks of the volunteers will be making and marking the walking trails on the different routes in the area. The work is physical and tools may include the sledge (sledgehammer) and crowbar.
Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Additional tasks may be cleaning or beautifying the surroundings, like hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by some visitors.
Some of the trails are located in an isolated area and the group may spend the day at the work site, therefore it will be needed to prepare packed lunches in the morning as we would return in the late afternoon back to the accommodation. The group may be split during the day to work in different locations.
The working day normally runs from 09:00 to 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland's changeable weather. No previous experience is necessary but the work is demanding and requires a good physical condition; it can at times be repetitive.
As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned.
Volunteers need to be prepared for working and walking in a raw landscape and sometimes cold weather. Be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and bring warm clothes as the tasks take place outside and it can get cold. Bring warm under-layers, waterproofs, walking shoes/boots, a good sleeping bag and gloves.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

This project gives SEEDS volunteers the opportunity to live in a very beautiful mountain hut which has been very popular among visitors travelling into the interior or the highlands. It may be possible to stay in tents some nights. Volunteers will sleep on mattresses in shared rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. There are cooking facilities, kitchen, bathrooms and showers in the hut. Volunteers will share the duties of preparing food, cooking meals and cleaning. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions.
Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

The numerous trails make this area perfect for hiking.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

SEEDS volunteers will work in the area of Lónsöræfi or the Lón district, located in the East of Iceland, we will work in the municipality of Hornafjörður, in cooperation with some locals and the Environmental Agency.

The main works are planting vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc at the eco-farming camp. Also, volunteers may work on making fences to protect the farm, etc. Quite tiring but let's enjoy it.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Summer house or Mongolian traditional tents which is GER (traditional tent). Need to bring Sleeping bag. Cooked by volunteers with a local staff.

Lage und Freizeit

Cultural exchange program, excursions, etc.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Since 2000 we have had volunteers around the world joining our summer programs which were designed around building sustainable vegetable farming facilities. Over the years we have learned that developing eco-friendly and sustainable farming facilities does require a lot of research on improving our farming methods, learning the best practices from local farmers on improving the crop quality and perseverance despite the setbacks which were imminent in harsh Mongolian continental climate, with long, frigid winters and short, warm summers.
We are hoping to transform our eco-friendly vegetable farming facility into a sustainable organic farming training center which teaches the low income families how to grow healthy greens on their own. Organic fruits and vegetables are sparse and expensive in Mongolia which makes them unaffordable for many low income families. We are planning to donate any crops from our facilities to families in need in addition to providing them with the knowledge of how to grow their own crops.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

We will pick volunteers up from the airport or train station according to request of volunteers.

These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or organised solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:
A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe.
A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.
All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS volunteers will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms/dorms of up to 6 people. Please bring your own towel.

In the Lón District, the easternmost area of the Vatnajökull region, lie the Stafafell mountains, also called Lónsöræfi. They dominate the skyline east of the Vatnajökull glacier and comprise one of Iceland’s most extensive protected areas.  Besides the deep, rugged canyons, the landscape displays a wide range of colours owing to the presence of rhyolite and other colourful rocks.
