SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing. Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller volunteer work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact.
SEEDS will organise a night photography and aurora hunting workshop in the city or in the vicinity of Reykjavík. Northern lights are a natural phenomenon depending on solar activity and meteorological conditions; we cannot guarantee you will see northern lights, but the night photography workshop will be organised anyway.

Kost og logi

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature. During the camp, the annual Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) will take place. The main goal is to present dramas and non-fiction films by filmmakers from over 40 countries. SEEDS does not provide festival passes but participants can attend free off-venue events and screenings.

Arrangeret af

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a community dinner or a visit to a trash collection centre, a geothermal power plant, a museum or exhibition. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, pandemic-related restrictions, as well as availability of our partner organisations.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Rejsevejledning til mødested

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on September 25 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own.

Based on the time of the year the volunteers will be working during the day or at night in the months of August and September from 20:00 to 08:00. Depending on the number of turtles that come ashore, two teams might be formed among the volunteers. In this way, each group will be taking turns, working one night, and taking the next night off for recovery. In addition, the weekends are also spared for resting.

Please take into account that the schedule is subject to change depending on the weather conditions and the condition of the sea turtles and it is possible to work with crocodiles in case there is no work with turtles, this can happen mostly in the months of January and February. The coordinator or the camp leader will be informing you regarding your work schedule. Some of the activities to be performed are:

1. Finding adult turtles and collect their eggs.
2. Moving the eggs to a protected place called Vivero.
3. Releasing newborn baby turtles into the sea.
4. Patrolling the beaches at night.
5. Making some reconstruction in the most important turtle camps of the region.

If you love nature, want to have a great time by the beautiful beaches, at the same time enjoying all the amenities of a hotel and witnessing the magical spectacle of natural miracles that has been reoccurring since millions of years... then this project is for you!

Kost og logi

Support the educational centre Kell am See, an important place for youth work in the whole area of Trier, by doing environmental and maintenance works! The educational centre is public, non-profit and offers the opportunity for youth groups, associations and schools to spend some days or weeks here, running a seminar or some other projects. One focus of the offer is on environmental education and outdoor activities. You will be working to take care and maintain the green areas around the regional education centre. Your tasks will include:
• cutting the grass and bushes;
• renovating/taking care of the playground and its big swing, the low rope course, the tree houses and the sports grounds;
• tending the herbs garden and the insect hotel;
• building wooden benches;
• cleaning the grounds of the centre.
In addition, you will continue to pedagogically upgrade the outdoor area and create new offers. For example, one of the past workcamp groups set up an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, which is used for different educational actions with youngsters.

Kost og logi

You will stay in five several wooden tepees for max. five persons each. It is really great to stay here surrounded by pure nature, with the campfire in the middle of the circle of tepees. For your free time you will find perfect conditions: billiard, plenty of outdoor facilities (campfire, basketball, football, volleyball…). Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.

Kell am See is a village 30 km from Trier, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The area is well known for cycling, hiking and other ways of outdoor activities. In Kell, there is a holiday resort, which offers more than 200 holiday bungalows next to a lake (close to the educational centre). The area is not just appreciated by tourists: People from the area also come here for cycling (there is a 45 km cycling path on a former railway roadbed) or to spend a nice day outside. In addition, the region offers plenty of historic sites (castles, museums….). You will get the opportunity to come in contact with local associations, e.g. the local voluntary fire brigade. Since public transport is poor, the number of excursions will be limited but you will for sure visit Trier, famous for its Roman sites, its cathedral and for being the birth place of Karl-Marx.

The regional youth department runs an educational centre in this village, which offers different environmental educational activities for youth groups and school classes. Also, school classes or youth associations can come here for several days and run seminars or trainings of their own. The centre was just renovated a couple of years ago and different new outdoor and training facilities were installed. Under the guidance of architects, building materials such as bricks, roof tiles or clay are secured during the demolition of an old ruined stable and reconditioned for later reuse, i.e. cleaned, sorted, stacked, etc..
Depending on the state of the preliminary work, parts of the building materials can be directly reused, e.g. by plastering interior wall surfaces with the recovered clay.
The maintenance of the project site and the already existing ecological building at the Flusshof involves general gardening and landscaping work, such as chopping wood, laying out plantings, maintaining green spaces and plants, pruning trees, setting fences or earthworks.
It may be possible to build a dry hedge pavilion from tree cuttings. In rainy weather there is work in the barn or in the old farmhouse.

Kost og logi

Accommodation in the existing buildings of the Flusshof. Please bring your own sleeping bags or bed linen and towels.
The sanitary conditions are simple, showers and toilets are available.
The group can spend their free time in the buildings and on and off the project site.
There is a communal kitchen where they can cook together. Vegan and vegetarian food is possible.
For the planned work assignments, please bring work gloves, work shoes (safety shoes) and robust work clothes suitable for rainy weather.

The Flusshof is located in the small village of Räbel, a district of the Hanseatic town of Werben, directly on the river Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt, where not far away the ferry Werben connects the two banks of the Elbe and thus the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. Räbel is located in the Middle Elbe Nature Reserve and Biosphere Reserve in the Altmark region, part of the Elbe River Landscape UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The Elbe Cycle Path passes directly by the site and invites you to take early autumn walks to explore the picturesque landscape of the Altmark or to observe wildlife

Arrangeret af

The Flusshof is an ecological holiday home in a beautiful nature reserve. Together with the Naturbauschule initiative of Spreeplan Projekt UG, architects and engineers for healthy building and renovation, it offers holistic education around the topics of sustainability, healthy living, ecological building and renovation. The aim is to enable people to later apply what they have learned in practice in their everyday lives or in their own projects, or to pass on their knowledge to third parties.
The core topic of the projects is the use of exclusively ecological building materials and the recycling of old building materials in connection with sustainable energy production. The offer is complemented by training for physical and mental fitness and the offer of a healthy and balanced diet.

Yderligere detaljer

The Elbe cycle path is right by the Flusshof and the beautiful landscape with many small lakes can be explored on foot, by bike or on inline skates. Project Description
The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles. Therefore, the activities at Lohra Castle combine aspects of cultural heritage preservation and aspects of natural heritage preservation. The participants of the Workcamps carry out works in the green areas and the forests around the castle, restoration work and collaboration in renovation works.

The castle is surrounded by a vast green area and the volunteers will help in the maintenance of it, Near the youth accommodation houses that are part of the Lohra Castle complex there is a camping site which can be used by youth groups, for this reason the area should be made accessible from overgrown grass. The tasks will be mowing and collecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds.

The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle.

In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months.

Kost og logi

FINANCES
All costs linked to the project are covered, including food, accommodation, insurance and transportation during the stay at the project. Travel costs to and from the camp place are not covered. Participants should organise their journey to and from the project place by themselves and on their own expenses. Furthermore, participants should bring their own pocket money.

ACCOMMODATION
As in most of Open Houses' camps the volunteers will live at the same place where they also work on, what means that they live more or less on a building site. The accommodation is very simple: old houses dating to the 18th century where the workers of the castle used to live. The interior of the houses however has been made fit to modern times; there are shared rooms with simple beds or mattresses. The accommodation is equipped with showers with hot water, there is a common kitchen and heating provided by a wooden stove. The equipment is simple but fair. After work, when everybody wants to take a shower, there can be a limit of hot water.

FOOD
The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today.

The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. For years Lohra Castle was vacant. In the 1990s a civil society association which became today’s Open Houses, began to rescue the castle and to revitalise it through cultural activities.

The process of rehabilitation of cultural heritage not only brought new life and use to an otherwise forgotten monument, but it also provided with a new space where young people could reconnect with tangible heritage while valorising the relevance of preserving a historical monument. Since then, a large number of international workcamps, heritage volunteering projects, heritage training courses, seminars, exhibitions, concerts and other activities with international participants have been taking place every year in the castle.

Arrangeret af

Open Houses – rooms open for those who come along.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest.
Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions.
The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire.
Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions.
Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare.
Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.

of perfume. Mysore, India’s ‘Sandal wood City’ also known as the ‘City of Palaces’ is
the cultural capital of the state of Karnataka. For nearly 6 centuries, the kingdom of Mysore was
ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty, who were patrons of art and culture. An enlightened dynasty, the

Mysore palace is the official residence of the Vodeyar family and was the administrative seat of the
kingdom of Mysore for centuries. Built mainly in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, it houses
a treasure trove of beautiful paintings and objects d’art, collected over the years by the royal
family. Antique lovers will find it hard to budge from here, with such a visual feast at hand.
In Hindu folklore, Mysore was plagued by the demon-king Mahishasura, a buffalo-headed monster.
An ancient stone staircase of 1008 steps leads to the temple of the goddess Chamundeshwari, who
fought and killed the demon, thereby liberating the city from his tyranny. Halfway to the shrine is a
huge statue of a Nandi bull, carved out of a single piece of black granite. Hiking up this historic hill
is a pleasurable experience, from the top of which lies a breath taking view of the city of Mysore

Some excursions (e.g. to the Golden Circle, South Shore, Reykjanes and/or Snæfellsnes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares if there is free time after the camp workshops/sessions.
It may be very cold and/or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats) and good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.
