During the workcamp the main working activity will be carried out in the northern and eastern part of the “Horseshoe”. A large depression situated in that part of the Pond has been filled up by thick vegetation of white willow, silver-leaf poplar and ash combined with large quantities of dry leaves, dead branches and trunks, seriously decreasing floodwaters flow. The work will consist of clearing the depression, cutting the bushes, removal of the tree trunks and burning the smaller branches. The best period for this sort of activity is August, because the access to the depression, which dries out during the summer, is easier. Also, we will do some cleaning work – collecting garbage which stayed in the area after the floods. The work is physically demanding but not too hard.

Kost og logi

Accommodation will be in two renovated houses in Ethno park. Food will be provided and prepared by local cook. Some meals will be prepared by volunteers. The accommodation is in the end of the village Kupinovo (about 2500 inhabitants) and 7 km away from the village Obrez (2000 inhabitants), where will also be our working site. The houses are from 19th century, meaning that one of them is completely preserved as it was in those times – without electricity and running water. You’ll sleep on the floor, mattresses will be provided but you need to bring sleeping bag! If you prefer sleeping in tent you can bring one as there is a large yard where you can put it.

Beliggenhed og fritid

The experts from the Institute for Protection of Nature of Serbia and Enterprise “Vojvodina sume” will visit the camp and provide you with the information on the natural history of the Obedska bara and its contemporary environmental problems. You will also have the opportunities to visit ruins of medieval fortress and churches located in the vicinity of the Pond. You can row a boat across the Pond, swim in the Sava River (swim at your own risk!), do a bit of bird watching or maybe do the research of your own interest concerning the beautiful nature of the area.

About Young Researches of Serbia – Voluntary Service of Serbia:
YRS was founded in 1976. Our main aims are environmental protection and education, promotion of sustainable development, work with young people in an international context, promotion of scientific creativity and voluntarism and its values. Voluntary Service of Serbia is a volunteer exchange service center founded in 1990 as one of the sectors of YRS. It is a volunteer exchange reference point for this part of Europe. Through VSS passed more than 5000 Serbian volunteers who participated in international voluntary workcamps all around the world and 2500 of foreign ones at more than 250 workcamps in Serbia and about 40 long-term volunteers.
YRS is a member of: the Coordinating Committee of International Voluntary Service, Youth and Environment Europe, Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organizations, and a partner of Service Civil International in Serbia. YRS is one of the founding members of the networks: South East European Youth Network and Youth Culture in Action Network.
The Area:
Obedska Pond is a vast swamp-forest area stretching along the river Sava in Southern Srem (Vojvodina). It is an authentic complex of stagnant tributaries, marshes, pits, marsh vegetation, damp meadows and forests with an exceptionally rich diversity of the ecosystems and recent species. The pond is an oxbow lake a remnant of the old Sava river meanders of which the main stream flows nowadays more southward. Due to its shape, the swampy bed of the Pond, situated between the villages of Obrez and Kupinovo is called “The Horse-shoe”. Higher grounds with cut-in depressions and old oak forest habitats are called “The Hoof”. Obedska bara, well known for its variety of swamp and forest habitats is actually famous for its bird fauna (more than 220 bird species) as a swamp bird’s sanctuary. It is one of the oldest protected areas in the world. The first administrative protective measures were introduced as early as in 1874 protecting Obedska bara as a hunting ground. It was reserved only for the members of the Austrian royal family, as at that time it belonged to the Habsburg monarchy. According to the present status of the legal protection regime it belongs to the first category, which means that it is a natural asset of exceptional value. Its status has been verified by the international community i.e. ratified by the Convention on Swamps (Ramsar site since 1977) and included in the List of Areas of Special Significance for Birds of Europe.
The project:
In 1992 students from the Belgrade University members of the Students Biological Research Society “Josif Pancic” started scientific research project symbolically called “The Return of the Ibis” (“Povratak Ibisa”). It has been a successful project becoming the main support to the struggle for the protection and preservation of this beautiful wildlife reserve. Numerous negative processes have been detected so far, conditioned by human impact and natural succession, which pose the greatest danger to the nature of Obedska pond. These processes include natural overgrowing, decreasing of free water surfaces and forest dying due to the decline of flood and underground water levels. The next step of the project is “swamp healing”. Together with the public enterprise “Vojvodina sume”, which governs this special nature reserve, the experts from the Institute for Protection of Nature of Serbia, Regional Secretariat for Environment and Sustainable Development and Municipality of Pecinci, the sponsor of this workcamp, The Young Researches of Serbia – Voluntary Service of Serbia is organizing the twenty-third (23rd) international workcamp at Obedska Bara whose volunteers will help to decrease the negative effects of overgrowing the “Horseshoe”. Our work has given very good and visible results: so far because of our activities several bird species have returned and the bird colony is now bigger with a stable number of nesting species.

The nature park Märkische Schweiz is 40 km east of Berlin and offers its unique natural and cultural landscape as well as the backdrop for our project in and around the environmental education center "Drei Eichen". (“three oaks”) Through the cooperation with the nature park administration, we will not only get to know the nature park and its surroundings together, but also actively help to shape it. Young people from the surrounding area are also invited to help.
We offer this work camp because it is fun to have young people from all over the world with us and because for some work we simply need many hands!
On the grounds of the environmental education center ”Drei Eichen” people and pets live together – and we often have many guests: children, families, seminar groups.
Currently, we also want to reintroduce wild honey bees, which originally lived in caves in old trees, to our nature park. We will show you how to build caves in tree trunks for this purpose.
In order to be able to store material for this old form of beekeeping (called Zeidlerei in German) in a dry place, we have started to build a shelter - we will continue to work on this with you.
For activities in between, “Drei Eichen” with its grounds offers many opportunities to learn about plants and animals, nature conservation and alternative ways of life and to actively participate.
At different locations in the nature park Märkische Schweiz, we will work together on several days to carry out various landscape conservation activities in different natural areas. The goal is to protect or promote either dry or wet sites, their soil and the native plants that grow there. Historically, these sites were created and maintained through a lot of manual labor - mowing adapted to the season and grazing by sheep and goats. Today, we help with that. We also help resurface sections of trails.
All work, whether in landscape maintenance, handicraft or creative-design, takes place outdoors.

Kost og logi

You cook together. Money for the food shopping is provided to you. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any allergies when registering.
You will sleep in simple shared bedrooms in the environmental education center “Drei Eichen” (Three Oaks), located in the middle of the forest, 4km from Buckow.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Educational Activities: You can do GPS tour(s)inf the nature park, go on a guided walking tour on the topic of “biological diversity”, visit the local bat museum, go swimming in the various nearby lakes, visit local cinemas and the local pub "lokal". In Buckow, there is a campfire place where you can sit around at night, a climbing wall and also a canoe hire in the nearby area.

The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles. Therefore, the activities at Lohra Castle combine aspects of cultural heritage preservation and aspects of natural heritage preservation. The participants of the Workcamps carry out works in the green areas and the forests around the castle, restoration work and collaboration in renovation works.

The castle is surrounded by a vast green area and the volunteers will help in the maintenance of it, Near the youth accommodation houses that are part of the Lohra Castle complex there is a camping site which can be used by youth groups, for this reason the area should be made accessible from overgrown grass. The tasks will be mowing and collecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds.

The camping grounds are being expanded to include a new area where toilet facilities will be installed in the future. The volunteers will assist the works on the pipelines. In addition they will support with the upkeep of the already used camping grounds to allow groups of visitors as well as the volunteers themselves, enjoy the open spaces.

The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle.

Because around the outer walls of the castle trees had been grown up during the last two decades, actually the castle is partly not seen from the valley. So, besides taking care of green areas the volunteers will help to cut the trees around the walls in order to expose the view to the castle and will transport the wood to the storage place as well as splitting and stacking the wood. Besides that, the volunteers will take care of the nearby natural protected area, a huge meadow with old scattered fruit trees, which was for a long time out of maintenance. The participants will collect stones and branches covered under the grass to enable to mow and collect the grass and afterwards level the ground. Additionally, there will be involvement in some small renovation works.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a nature reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of the castle Lohra begins in the Middle Age. The castle is more than 1,000 years old. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different times: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. For years Lohra Castle was vacant. In the 1990s Open Houses started to restore the castle and to revive it by cultural activities. Since that time, a large number of Workcamps, Building Weeks, exhibitions, concerts and other activities with international participants took place in the castle.

Open Houses – rooms open for those who come along.

Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest.

Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions.

The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire.

Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions.

Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare.

Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.

The Manor is located at a scenic place a few meters away from an idyllic lake in northern Brandenburg. This quiet location is home to a small and peaceful community which every year welcomes the arrival of our volunteering groups.

The volunteers will be enjoying their leisure time between the lake and the green areas surrounding the manor; however, they will also take care of the gardens by cutting grass, cleaning and trimming bushes. At Gantikow The main task will involve assisting in conservation works on the roofing of one of the baroque wings of the manor, guided by a technical instructor with experience in craftmanship and woodworks. The volunteers will carry out repairs on the structure and rehabilitate this section of the structure, securing the outer parts of a segment of this historical building.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Gantikow Manor is situated 100 kilometres north of Berlin. The house is surrounded by a nice village with a medieval church and a lake. The manor is a picturing example of a former baroque building, changed in the late 19th century in neo-baroque style.

Over centuries, the houses belonged to the Earls von Platen, which sold it in 1872 to a civil family which started soon, in 1877, with the modernisation of the house and kept it in their ownership till 1945. After World War II, the house was first used as a refugee shelter and after that the community used the house as a village centre, hosting the community office, the local store, the school, the kindergarten, the doctor’s room, the kitchen of the agricultural cooperative and several apartments. With its many rooms the large building is perfect to be used as a Youth Accommodation House.

The house is surrounded by a beautiful park with old trees which reached originally up to the lake. The lake can be visited by the volunteers after work and they can have a nice summer time by the water.

"Learning about agroecology" is a project initiated by ASTOVOT a few years ago to learn how to cultivate differently and to safeguard biodiversity. It involves the exploitation of a garden plot where a variety of organic vegetables are grown for local consumption. This project has two components. The first component is the production of organic vegetables and the second is awareness raising on eco-actions and training on agroecology. In setting up this project, ASTOVOT intends to focus on the initial aspect of agroecology: in the form of manual farming techniques, respectful of fauna and flora, (no chemical inputs, with plant cover, associations of plants and vegetables, etc.) so as to enrich the biodiversity of the site and the fertility of the soil. This project is also intended to be a platform for the exchange of skills, experimentation and promotion of organic crops between local and international volunteers..
The agro-ecological garden is located in an environment rich in biodiversity and vegetation, with a small river next to it that allows the watering of the plants.
AIMS OF PROJECT
 Preserve the biodiversity of the site;
 To promote the cultivation of organic products (vegetables and fruit) through agroecology;
 To encourage educational exchanges on agroecology and other practices for a more sustainable agriculture;
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
- Weeding and weeding ;
- Making beds, nursery, hoeing ;
- Compost making ;
- Protection of seedlings (shading), transplanting of young plants, watering of seedlings of different vegetables grown;
- Reinforcing the garden fence with bamboo;
- Construction of a straw and bamboo hut for relaxation and storage of tools and products;
- Organisation of educational activities in the garden with the children;
NB: Volunteers interested in this project can bring seedlings and other documents related to the themes of agroecology.

Kost og logi

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is generally basic, simple and specific to the location of the project. On site, volunteers are accommodated in groups of three or four people per room. The number of people per room depends on the collective organisation of the volunteers themselves. Depending on the location, volunteers may use dry toilets and showers without water inside. This implies that the volunteers will fetch water from a fountain or well. The association provides volunteers with plastic or foam mats. Volunteers who have sleeping bags can bring them with them if possible. Access to drinking water on the site. However, access to electricity and internet may be limited depending on the village. This is due to regular load shedding and difficulties in accessing the network respectively.

FOOD
During the workcamp, the volunteers will cook their own meals. An internal organisation will allow for the creation of groups that will alternate to carry out the different domestic tasks, including cooking. The food products used for cooking are sometimes imported, sometimes local and often organic. The diet of each volunteer will be taken into account in the cooking of the meals. Volunteers will have access to tropical fruits such as bananas, oranges, pineapples, mangoes, avocados, papayas, etc.

Beliggenhed og fritid

In addition to the main activities of the workcamp, other activities are organised such as: discovery walks, hikes, festive outings and cultural meetings. These activities allow the volunteers to come into contact with the local population and to discover the Togolese culture.
During the weekends, collective excursions are organised by the volunteers and their leaders to discover the tourist sites of the region where the workcamp is taking place. It should be noted that the expenses related to the excursions and the volunteers' outings are not included in the participation fees. However, the association can facilitate or negotiate transport for the volunteers during outings or excursions.

Arrangeret af

Created in 1957, the NGO Association Togolaise des Volontaires au Travail (ASTOVOT) is one of the first Togolese associations. ASTOVOT is a non-profit, secular organisation that has been supporting international solidarity initiatives for several decades, as well as the self-help of rural communities through its support for local development projects. ASTOVOT's mission is to contribute to the socio-cultural development of local populations in the communes of the Kloto and Agou Prefectures through the realisation of collective utility projects and the involvement of young national and foreign volunteers. Today ASTOVOT is a reference in international volunteering and civic service in Togo. Each year, ASTOVOT welcomes several dozen international volunteers from Europe (Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg...) and Asia (Japan) thanks to solid partnerships with several organisations working in these fields such as AIME, SCI International, IJGD Germany, Solidarités Jeunesses, Compagnons bâtisseurs, Concordia, NICE Japan, Cadip Canada. Since its creation, the association has carried out numerous projects in its areas of intervention, with the aim of implementing a participative approach with the local communities. The projects carried out include the construction of classrooms and eco-sanitary latrines, reforestation, socio-educational activities, the renovation of school buildings and sanitary facilities, and the setting up of awareness-raising workshops (on themes related to education, citizenship, agro-ecology, hygiene and health, and entrepreneurship). The association aims to :
 To contribute to the animation of life by the participation of Togolese and foreign volunteers in the realization of works of general interest;
 To improve the living conditions of the local population by promoting their development and well-being through the protection of the environment and the socio-cultural heritage;
 Supporting socio-educational and sports initiatives in rural communities;
 To promote the movement of people and goods through international and intercultural exchanges

The volunteers will be working at night from 20:00 to 08:00, four days per week with an average of thirty hours. Depending on the number of turtles that come ashore, two teams might be formed among the volunteers. In this way, each group will be taking turns, working one night and taking the next night off for recovery. In addition, the weekends are also spared for resting. Some of the activities to be performed are:
1. Finding adult turtles and collect their eggs.
2. Moving the eggs to a protected place called Vivero.
3. Releasing newborn baby turtles into the sea.
4. Patrolling the beaches at night.
5. Making some reconstruction in the most important turtle camps of the region.
If you love nature, want to have a great time by the beautiful beaches, at the same time enjoying all the amenities of a hotel and witnessing the magical spectacle of natural miracles that has been reoccurring since millions of years... then this project is for you!

Gorogosa Park is located in Sofala Province in the center of Mozambique, about 1000 km away from the capital city of Mozambique (Maputo). Gorongoza National Park extends over the bracetygia-covered plains north of Beira Corridor to the south-eastern base of mount Gorongoza. Formerly regarded as one of the southern Africa’s finest wild life reserves, attracting over 12,000 visitors a year, with more game than the much larger Kruger National Park in South Africa, the area became central battleground during the Civil war ended in 1992. Since the war ended a lot of work has been done to reopen the park to visitors. Landmine have been lifted, bridges repaired and lodges rebuilt.

Weekends are meant to be for free tours that the group can organize by itself. You can decide to visit places of interest around the area of the work camp. It has now become a custom in all our Workcamps to have cultural nights. This affords each volunteer the opportunity to present her/his country and culture. Please bring with you your national flag and traditional dress if possible. Sports and artistic moments will be organized together by the participants and local community. In some cases the workcamp may run during special event (festival, fairs, workshops and others) occurring close to the area where the camp will be running.
