Sanet is a small town in the southwest of Spain close to Dénia (communidad de Valencia). It lays in the beautiful countryside, surrounded by hills which are great for hiking - there are a lot of hiking trails to discover. There is a local swimming pool available and Dénia is only 5 minutes by cars.
The house is located right in the middle of town, so there are great opportunities to interact and socialize with the locals and to truly experience the Spanish countryside.
Furthermore, the volunteers can make excursions to Ondara and El Vergel, local towns close to Sanet. The surrounding villages like Benimelli and Ràfol d'Almunia can also be visited. There will also be day trips to the beach which is about 15 minutes by car from Sanet.

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in other possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing. Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact. In this project SEEDS will organise a night photography and aurora hunting (Northern Lights) workshop in the countryside near Reykjavík. This will take place during late evening and possibly into the night. Northern lights are a natural phenomenon depending on solar activity and meteorological conditions; we cannot guarantee you will see northern lights, but the night photography workshop will be organised anyway.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Lage und Freizeit

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you! While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers! You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a community dinner or a visit to a recycling centre, a geothermal power plant, a museum or exhibition. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, pandemic-related restrictions, as well as availability of our partner organisations. You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS’ social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on February 8 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own.

Weitere Infos

Participation fee EUR 300 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. It includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the visits available and the night photography workshop & aurora hunting excursion.

Anforderungen

Other excursions (e.g. to the Golden Circle, South Shore, Fagradalsfjall volcano, Reykjanes and/or Snæfellsnes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares if there is free time after the camp workshops/sessions. It may be very cold and/or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats), good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on March 8 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with a local NPO, Bizan Daigaku(B.D) since 2022. Okawa Village, the village with the smallest population in Japan, is located in the middle of Shikoku and is surrounded by 1000m class mountains. At the center of the village is a dam that was completed 47 years ago, and the former village has sunk to the bottom of the dam.
There are 400 inhabitants who counted 4000 at the peak. There are currently 25 children in the village. This work camp is a Yoshino River water system work camp that works in Okawa Village, which is the upper stream of the clear Yoshino River, and also in Tokushima City, which is the most downstream. Volunteers are expected to contribute ideas and practices on how to revitalize a small, depopulated village through the work camp, which has just started.

Weitere Infos

Arbeit

Volunteers will cut down trees in the forest and carry them out so that SATOYAMA forest receives enough amount of sun light and will be kept in the healthy condition for biodiversity. You sometimes need to use blades and machineries under the supervision. Work is quite hard from morning to evening even if it’s not so heavy rain. Volunteers may take care of free-range raised chickens and slaughter old enough chickens for eating by themselves as well. You sometimes work with mentally/physically challenged people who work at the same place.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Volunteers will stay in a regular Japanese house. Meals will be cooked by volunteers by turns. Sleeping bag is NO need. Depends on the amount of work and consideration for the environment, volunteers may take a shower once every two days. Water might be only cold.

Lage und Freizeit

Workcamp is held in Kami-mitani area, Nabari city, Mie prefecture, about 60 km from Osaka. There are famous falls nearby that many hikers visit.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDGs 15 (Life on Land), organized together with "Akame no SATOYAMA wo Sodateru kai", a local environmental organization for conservation of SATOYAMA forest working in Nabari city, since 1999. Because this area is relatively close to the big cities between Osaka and Nagoya, there were plans to build a golf field and a disposal center. However, the local people stopped those plans by collecting donations and buying the land. SATOYAMA needs to be maintained by humans for its biodiversity and water adjustment function. Our ancestors had protected and utilized the forest in an ecological and sustainable way, which has been neglected by modernization at many places in Japan.

Weitere Infos

  • Study theme
Volunteers will acquire the knowledge of conservation work in SATOYAMA forest.
    - Other activities
Hiking, opportunity communicate with local people, etc.
    - Outcome of this workcamp

Iwaki city is located in the southern part of Hamadori (near seashore), Fukushima prefecture. It is the second most populous city in the Tohoku region. Tabito Village was merged with Iwaki City in 1966. The Tabito area is located in the southern part of the city and is steep, mountainous and undulating throughout.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDGs 15 (Life on Land), organized together with Tabito Satoyama Restoration Committee (TSRC), since 2022. Tabito-cho is an area of Iwaki City with an ageing population, but at the same time it still retains its traditional satoyama landscape. Former NICE staff, her husband who took up as Local Vitalization Cooperator (organized by Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) in 2019, was fascinated by Tabito area and wanted to pass on the local satoyama nature and culture to the next generation. The TSRC was set up with the involvement of local people. The couple's vision of a 'Tabito Workcamp Village' to enliven the depopulated and ageing town with a workcamp movement was launched. TSRC was planned a short-term workcamp in 2021, but it was cancelled because of COVID-19. In 2022, very short-term workcamp in spring, short-term workcamp in summer and medium- to long-term volunteers were organized, and accepted a university group.

The protection of the environment is a major challenge today. The solid waste management should be an urgent action to protect the environment. Solid waste is a by-product of human activities, which tends to increase with rapid urbanization, improved living standard and changing consumption patterns. Management of increasing amount of solid waste has become a major challenge in many communities in Nepal. If solid waste is properly used it can be a valuable resource, but if it is not effectively managed, it can result in serious adverse impact on environment and public health. The problems associated with the disposal of waste in public places in VIN s working communities, including schools, are numerous and they include littering of food remains and other waste materials. There is a potential health risks associated with the poor management of solid waste .Children are particularly susceptible to respiratory problems caused by dust from dumping sites and also to diarrhoea ,skin disease and eye infection amongst other diseases. Non-biodegradable waste (NBW) is common in communities that are urbanised or within the vicinity of an urbanised environment. Nepal has a huge challenge of NBW visible to the naked-eye. This NBW phenomenon is a much larger issue in rural communities such as Kavresthali and Okharpauwa community located beyond the outskirts of Kathmandu. Preventing the build-up of NBW in communities becomes top priority as diseases derived from NBW increases the prevalence of disease related to sanitation and consumable products. Furthermore, NBW causes degradation to the land. The majority of farmers use to grow local products to feed their households and farm-stock. This project is designed to generate a change in the community with a theme of Better Environment i Better Tomorrow .
