Arbeit

At the end of the season the entire site is deconstructed and packed away for the winter. Like setup, this involves a lot of manual labour and hard work but is a time when the team really comes together as we work to leave the field as we found it at the beginning of the summer.
We make sure that all structures are cleaned, dried and packed away. You’ll have the chance to see the behind the scenes of outdoor living and event infrastructure and take part in plenty of problem solving and logistics tasks. While the work can be quite physical, we find that because we are not hosting events anymore, we have more time for team activities such as fancy banquet dinners, dress-up parties or relaxing campfire evenings.
If it is something you want to have a go at, then takedown may be the phase for you! Please note that as we take structures down the facilities on the field will become more minimal (toilets and showers will be available till the end).

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

The host is an outdoor venue and campsite so all accommodation is tented – this is for all volunteers as well as guests will be in tents. Green & Away will provide you with a space in a tent with a camp bed, sleeping bag, pillow and blanket – IT IS STILL COLD AT NIGHT DURING UK SUMMERTIME, PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING ENOUGH WARM CLOTHES.

All food is provided (3 meals a day, regular tea breaks, with cake!). Meals are vegetarian/vegan, organic, fresh and local when possible. IF you do have any specific dietary requirements, please let the host know in advance.

The site has an outdoor biomass-powered, wood cladded shower cubicles, composting toilets, drinking water taps, clothes washing facilities and a washing line. The host provides eco-friendly toiletries. All safety and volunteering equipment is provided by Green and Away.

Lage und Freizeit

The site is situated close to a small village which has some small activities going on, the site is roughly 5-6 miles from Worcester with a direct bus. Volunteers can travel quite freely to a big city. More immediately the site is located to a café with walking trails and a river for swimming bordering the site. The nearest hospital is 9 miles away. You will get 2 days off of volunteering, days off are not the same each week, but rest will be assured to all volunteers.

The work at Green & Away is what brings us together, but there is also plenty of time for evening activities, revelling in music and laughter in our bar, swimming, playing games and enjoying an evening round the campfire. There is also opportunity for day trips to visit the local area, cultural visits or special days out like canoeing on your days off.
You are also invited to engage with our Education Wednesdays, where we spend an afternoon together learning from one another in a variety of ways through talks, workshops and discussions. If you have a skill or knowledge on a topic you would like to share with the group let us know!

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Green & Away is a registered educational charity, who organise, build and run a unique, tented sustainable venue – a temporary outdoor eco-village, situated on the banks of the River Teme, in lush Countryside overlooked by the Malvern Hulls in the West of England.

Every summer since 1990, many volunteers from all different walks of life and all over the world have come together to create a beautiful space for events, connection to the outdoors, community and learning – and we are very excited to welcome you!

You will be supported and encouraged to be involved in whatever you feel most comfortable doing, and the host always supports and appreciates new ideas and feedback – Green & Away is a place to share and learn new skills. The host warmly welcomes and encourages individuals of all backgrounds, ethnicities, races, genders, abilities, ages, religions, and orientations to join the Green & Away project.

This is an ongoing project with several starting dates. In your application, make sure to add which date you would like to start your 2 weeks project. You can apply for several 2-week periods in the same application.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

A travel guide will be sent to the volunteer nearer the time

Weitere Infos

For Green and Away it is really important the volunteer understands what we are about (environmental charity, not a music festival! etc.) and the circumstances of the facilities (outdoor showers, camping). Green & Away need volunteers to have a good level of English (B2) which is integral to the safety of themselves and everyone they are working with. A pre-approval interview over the phone will be organised with the host after applications.

Anforderungen

The host will reach out to you to establish levels of English, you will receive an email if successful. A conversational level of B2 is necessary to understand safety instructions.

Arbeit

This camp will take place for the first time this year. You will be working in the middle of the Black Forest (at the gates of the national park of the same name) and support the foresters and their trainees in their work.

There are three main tasks for you:
• Mowing protected mountain meadows: To protect the nature here, driving with machines is not permitted on these meadows (machines would cause soil compaction), so manual labour is required. You will be mowing by hand.
• Maintaining capercaillie habitats: The capercaillie is the largest chicken bird in Europe and is threatened with extinction in Germany. You will be removing wood and cutting branches, as the birds need passageways.
• Forest maintenance: You will be removing branches from trees (with or without a ladder).

The work will be led by a professional instructor, so no previous experience is needed. You will work around 30 hours per week, between 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday (with a lunchbreak of course). The work place is not far from your accommodation, so you will walk there every morning.

The camp is perfect for you if you love nature, since you will be working outside all day. What's more, the place is remote, so you can spend a lot of time with the others or on your own at the barbecue area or in the forest, meadows or hiking trails around the building. In short; the perfect project if you need a break from everyday life.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

The accommodation is on the first floor in the base building of the forest district. The building is called “Kriesenhof” and the forest district is called “Allerheiligen”. It is basic but has all facilities needed, such as a kitchen, a shower, a bathroom, even WIFI and a washing machine. You will sleep on mattresses, in one shared room. Please bring a sleeping bag (and a pillow if you want one) with you!

All volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat consumption and try more sustainable dishes.

Lage und Freizeit

The "Allerheiligen" forest district is located in south-west Germany, approx. 30 km from the French border as the crow flies. You will live and work in the middle of nature, in the direct neighbourhood of the Black Forest National Park.

There are many hiking opportunities, some of which start directly from the accommodation (Karlsruher Grat, Allerheiligen waterfalls, the national park).

Easily accessible by car: Mummelsee, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, Freudenstadt, summer toboggan runs etc.

Anreise zum Treffpunkt

Please arrange your travel in a way that you arrive in the afternoon or early evening to the train station of Ottenhöfen. Please check for connections from anywhere in Germany or Switzerland to Ottenhöfen on www.bahn.com/en

Weitere Infos

This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. Sturdy work shoes and clothing as well as sun and rain protection are required. As the area is quite remote, the number of excursions will be limited.

Please be aware that ticks can be an issue when you spend a lot of time outdoors in natural areas in Germany -like in this camp. In our General Infosheet you will find suggestions on how you can protect yourself against them. You are also welcome to check whether a vaccination against the tick-borne disease TBE makes sense and is possible in your home countrsturdy working shoes and clothes, as well as sun and rain protection

The laundry will be done by hand.

Lage und Freizeit

Isle is a French town located in the department of Haute-Vienne in the New Aquitaine region, bordering the town of Limoges, famous for its porcelain, but rich in history and heritage.
The commune benefits from an exceptional living environment where nature is omnipresent.

In the town centre, flowery gardens, green spaces and leisure facilities are to be discovered alongside local shops and services. Just a few minutes walk away, Isle has a rural protected area shaped by the two valleys of the Vienne and Aurence rivers. Throughout the woods, meadows and fields, there are the several castles and manor houses that together make up the town, with an urban dynamism offered by the town of Limoges, only 5 minutes away.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The municipality of Isle plans to restore an old mill and its miller house in the forest located close to town. To do so, several volunteering works will be undertaken: the construction of a shelter for hunters, an educational room for the leisure centre, a hiking trail and the reactivation of the mill.

Through this project, you will participate in this restoration and you will discover and share a human and cultural experience with the inhabitants of the town. You will also be near the French capital of porcelain, Limoges.

Join the volunteer team at the Morelia Zoo and be part of the city's most exciting educational experience! Transformed into a vibrant center for environmental learning, the Morelia Zoo stands as the epicenter for raising awareness about environmental conservation, biodiversity, and the preservation of flora and fauna.
The mission is simple yet crucial: to educate and sensitize our visitors, especially the youth, about the importance of protecting our furry, scaly, and feathered friends, as well as the environment we share with them.
One of the flagship activities is hosting students from various schools, who have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating animal world while understanding the delicate situation of some species and our fundamental role in their conservation.
Every year, the doors are opened for the renowned summer course, where children enjoy three unforgettable weeks surrounded by nature and fun. Expert instructors guide the little ones through playful activities designed not only to awaken their curiosity but also to cultivate empathy and love for the care of animals and our planet.
To make this exciting project possible, we need your help. If you are a committed young person, passionate about biodiversity and nature, with a love for fun and children's activities, join us! Nishiyama area, Kumano city, Mie prefecture. It is more than 200 km far both from Osaka and Nagoya.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

This project is actively working for SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with Association for Promotion of Regional Development in Nishiyama area, Kumano city where is depopulated in Mie prefecture since 2017. There are about 220 residents whose 73% is over 65 years old in Nishiyama area where volunteers will mainly stay. One youth who had joined an international workcamp in the past, has started organizing weekend workcamps since 2011 in Nishiyama area. 5 years later, local people have been getting open-minded to youths from outside of the area. Since the local people are getting too old to maintain public places such as parks or ruins of a castle, they need hands from international volunteers! Last year, more local elderly people got involved in the camp because the volunteers actively helped the work a lot and practiced traditional Japanese dance together. This year, local high school students may be invited to join a part of the camp.
*Outcome of this workcamp: Please see the long term goal of this project as Local SDGs at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/2019-wp5 (only Japanese for the moment, but you can at least enjoy the pictures!). The local people and vols. sometimes cry on the last days. In 2019, 7 vols. from 4 countries worked well.

Rixensart is located in the Brabant Walloon province, 25 km from Brussels and 7 km from Waver. The zone is highly urbanised and has all the usual conveniences, Rixensart still keeps its countryside charm but one can feel the proximity of Brussels (40 minutes by train, 20 by car). Asylum seekers Centre is located outside the town centre, but at a walking distance from the famous local lake Genval, cinema, shops, supermarkets, train station…

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The Rixensart Asylum Seekers Centre accommodates people or families who have asked for asylum in Belgium. Refugees come from Syria, Irak, Iran, Congo etc. Many of them fled from war or from countries that were under a dictatorship or devastated by an ecological disaster. Thus they came to Belgium with dreams of stability, richness and comfort life. It is not, however, that easy to be allowed to settle in Europe, especially for somebody from the South or the East. Before these people may start their new live, their refugee status has to be proven and accepted. While waiting for the document that will enable them to remain legally in our country, the immigrants are accommodated in this centre in the Brussels vicinity.
People living there await the solution concerning their administrative status. They never know what tomorrow may bring to them.
Therefore, residents often found themselves overwhelmed by feelings of relief and anguish, hope and disappointment. The life of Rixensart Asylum Seeker Centre reflects these individual dramas and hopefulness of residents.
Website (available in English): https://www.fedasil.be/en
This project is organized in line with several other volunteering teams hosted in refugees centre in Belgium. It aims to bring a small contribution to the welcoming of the residents as well as to permit the volunteers to learn about and be better aware of the realities of the migration policies.
By volunteering for this project, you are actively helping the centre welcome people coming from a wide variety of difficult situations and take care of them while they are waiting for a response to their asylum request (UN SDG 10 Reduced inequalities).

This project is a volunteering team, supported by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union.
Compared to the usual workcamp participation scheme, some main financial and administrative
differences must be underlined:
 The participation to the ESC volunteering teams is subjects to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en
 The volunteers do not have to pay any fee (not sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project
 The volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on basis of 4€/day, once they arrive on the project in Belgium
 The volunteers will receive a financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established in accordance with their travel distance (up to 275€)
 The volunteers need to register on the European Solidarity Corps Portal; CBB will organize their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project
 The volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online by the ESC portal

We warn the volunteers that the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden inside the centre.

The volunteers are required to have basic knowledge of French.
Besides, it is necessary to have basic knowledge about group’s animation (songs, music, dance, plays…) and to be able to assume responsibility within a group. Be able to listen to others is very important there. This kind of workcamp is a very rich personal and human experience. It makes people aware of the complexity of certain social conditions related to the great inequalities on our planet.
In order to demonstrate this, we ask the candidate volunteers:
 to send a short motivation letter
 to answer our specific questionnaire (if you do not have it yet, please ask it to your sending organization)
 to send us a CGC (Certificate of good conduct)

We will not confirm any placement request before the analysis of these documents.
