No experience is necessary as new volunteers are teamed up with students and experienced volunteers for hands on learning. Volunteer opportunities range from field excavations to basic maintenance and restoration tasks. This year we will be opening test excavations in the field and assisting with historic preservation tasks in early 20th century buildings, including the museum.

The workday is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The work is done in a friendly and supportive environment. Please understand that this is hard physical labor and includes digging with a trowel or shovel, screening soil, carrying buckets of dirt, and some other hand tool use. Each person will work at their own pace according to their physical condition.

The temperature can be quite hot or cool and rainy. BRING work gloves, work shoes and clothing, including a warm coat or sweatshirt, sun hat, rain coat, long sleeve shirts and pants as there will be mosquitoes. The work site can be dirty and muddy so multiple sets of work clothes are a good idea. The local mud is a very red color, which can be difficult to remove from clothing. Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.

Study Themes:
History and contemporaneous events (what was happening around the world while people lived at the site). Geology – why people chose to mine at this particular site. Immigration – where the mining community was from, and what challenges resulted from such a diversity of origins.

Kost og logi

Volunteers will be tent camping with field school students. Individual tents, sleeping bags and pillows are provided. BRING any other bedding you wish to use. All food and meals will be provided for volunteers. We will share cooking duties. Excursions into town will occur every other day, to purchase any snacks or personal items that may be desired.

Be sure to tell the other volunteers and the co-leader if you have any special diet needs.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Arbejde

Peenemünde is mainly known for its significant role in the times of the Nazi regime. Whereas Peenemünde first was only a place where the Nazis' army was positioned for developing different military tactics, it later became a labour camp in 1943. Prisoners had to help assemble the V-2 rockets and other military objects.

In this camp the volunteers will maintain the remains of the former labour camp “Karlshagen I”. Barracks, a bunker and two towers will be made visible for the public. This includes trimming the plants and keeping the wooden stakes that stabilize the construct in good shape.

Kost og logi

The volunteers will stay in in multiple rooms at a youth hostel. There will be bikes provided to get to the working location and to travel around the island.
Food is included (also vegetarian). There will be someone cooking for the participants. Dinner will be warm; lunch and breakfast will be sandwiches.

Beliggenhed og fritid

The town Peenemünde is located in the northern part of the island Usedom which is located in the very north-eastern part of Germany. Usedom is the island with the most hours of sunshine in Germany and a popular travel destination. While Peenemünde was occupied by the German army during the time of the Nazi-Regime, the nature could grow and bloom freely and many salt and orchid meadows sprouted.

Arrangeret af

This project is organized by NiG e.V., a german non-profit and non-government organization. In this project we work together with the historic technical museum of Peenemünde. The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum is working on the history of the creation and use of weapons during World War II. The exhibitions documents who worked in Peenemünde, how people lived and why the enormously elaborate weapon projects were carried out. They give the camp a free guide throuh the musuem and explain the archiological part before and while working.

The town of Bopfingen invites an international Workcamp for the seventh time this year! International Workcamps have helped with building the complex almost every year. A couple years back, researchers found archaeological evidence from the Celtic people that used to live here thousands of years ago in the Iron Age. The town’s project for the next years is to rebuild some of the houses in Celtic style to show tourists how the Celts may have lived in this area.

Kost og logi

You will be staying at a local gym hall at about 10 minutes walking distance from the city centre and 15 minutes from the train station. You will all sleep in the very big main room of the gym hall. Camp beds are provided but please bring your own sleeping bag! In the gym hall there is also a kitchen which you can use for cooking, tables and chairs, different toilets which can be separated by gender and one bathroom with one shower.

Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Bopfingen is a small town in southern Germany. It has a beautiful centre with a lot of houses in old German style. What makes Bopfingen special is the hill next to the town which is called “Ipf” with its flat plateau on the top. The “Ipf” has an important historical meaning in this area. In former times, the Celts lived there and until today a lot of archaeologists and historians come to explore the region. It is surrounded by beautiful nature where you can go for a walk or hike.

Around Bopfingen, you will find various museums, the romantic historic city of Nördlingen, and the Ries (a large circular meteor impact crater with a diameter of 24 km). If you would like to visit a bigger city, Ulm is not far away with its famous cathedral and the highest church tower in the world.

Arrangeret af

We invite 12 international volunteers to help continue the construction of the Celtic housing complex in Bopfingen. So far, six workcamp groups, local volunteers of the community of Bopfingen and a team of professional craftsmen have been working on the three houses of the Celtic housing complex. Your task will be to continue the work there by finishing the walls and floors.

The working place is set on the top of the hill “Ipf”, so you will be working outside a lot with a wonderful view over the region. All the materials you work with are natural materials like clay, wood, and stone. The work will be led by a professional instructor, so no previous experience is needed. Expect manual work! You will work around 30 hours per week, somewhere between 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday with a 1-2 hour lunchbreak.

We would like you to join us at an international camp to help us improve the stables, create a chicken house, build fences around the meadows, plant hedges and help with our small, self- sufficient field. We also look forward to your help working with the horses, e.g. grooming, feeding, walking, or perhaps helping with therapy with children.
Some jobs require a lot of physical effort, but you can learn many new skills.
We work about 3-4 hours every morning, and after lunch and a break, we continue working another 2 hours. On some days we offer excursions, e.g. to the lake, a castle or a small town. Saturday and Sunday are days.off.Volunteers can gain an insight into a small, young community and how it is organised. We are happy to show you how we treat animals and the nature around us. Our horses are our very special partners at work, so we provide them with the most species-appropriate husbandry possible. You are also welcome to gain an insight into the equine language.
You can also join us for some spiritual rituals.
We will also visit a larger community in the neighbourhood and an organic farm with solidarity farming (also called “community based agriculture”).

Kost og logi

We have various options for accommodation. If the weather is fine, we will sleep in 3-4 person tents with tarps in the garden. If.the.weather.is.bad, there is a large room where everyone can sleep together. Maybe some would like to sleep in the hay for a few nights.
Please bring warm sleeping bags and sleeping mats.
The garden also has an outdoor kitchen, and meals are mainly eaten outside.
With our help, the volunteers will prepare the food from mostly certified organic vegetables and fruit. The food will be mainly vegetarian and vegan.

Beliggenhed og fritid

The Lichtpferdehof is located in the Bergisches Land. A region that is internationally renowned for the production of tools and knives. Klein Katern is a small village and quite remote; you will experience a picturesque landscape. In the next town called Hückeswagen, you can visit an old castle, 'Schloss Burg'. A little further, but easy to.reach, is the lovely cathedral city of Cologne. A large lake is relatively close by, which is great for swimming when the weather is nice. We can sit around the campfire in the evening and admire the starry sky.

Arrangeret af

The Lichtpferdehof is a small community with 8-9 horses and ponies, founded in summer 2023. Four adults take care of the small farm with horses, dogs and cats. Three of our horses are therapy horses and are mainly used with children. Unfortunately, we cannot offer the horses for riding.
We have many meadows and a small field for self-sufficiency.
It is important to us that we are in harmony with nature and all visible and invisible beings. We create places of silence and contemplation but also places to celebrate.
Our farm is a 10-minute drive from the nearest town and more than an hour's walk away.

This camp is perfect for nature lovers and anyone who love to get in close contact with animals. Please bring warm sleeping bags, sleeping mats and swimwear.

No experience is necessary as new volunteers are teamed up with experienced volunteers for hands on learning. International volunteers of age 18 or older are welcome, including volunteers with disabilities. Volunteer opportunities range from field excavations to laboratory processing of artifacts. This year we will be investigating the Bockmier pre-contact site, dated between 1200-1250 AD. This appears to be an Ancestral Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) village but also contains components from other time periods. The project is an archaeological field school where volunteers will learn site layout, excavation techniques, soil sampling, plan and profile mapping and processing artifacts (projectile points, pottery, tools etc.).

The workday is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The work is done in a friendly and supportive environment. Please understand that this can involve hard physical labor, including digging with a trowel or shovel, screening soil and carrying buckets of dirt. Lab work may involve detailed work with the hands.

Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.

Kost og logi

American and international volunteers will stay in apartments, which are a short drive away from the dig site. Separate rooms will be available for female and male volunteers. BRING sleeping bag or your own bedding. All food and meals will be provided for volunteers. We will cook meals together or eat out at local restaurants. Vegetarian options will be available.

Be sure to tell the other volunteers and the co-leader if you have any special diet needs.

Volunteers will attend local cultural events, and the Seneca-Iroquois National Musem. This is an opportunity to take an in depth look at Native American culture from the perspective of a tribal entity. Ample time is provided for trips to local parks and points of interest. The local university has an art museum and a library with rare manuscripts from Medieval Europe.

There will be many opportunities to enjoy beauty and nature and there will be formal and informal discussions about topics of interest to the group. Bring music, games or other activities to share.

Are you interested in archaeology and historical crafts? Then this camp is the right place for you. You can take part in the construction of the "Zeiteninsel" open-air archaeological museum. Numerous settlement remains from almost all prehistoric cultural periods have been discovered in the Lahntal valley near Niederweimar and Argenstein. The extensive archaeological evidence proves that the region has been permanently inhabited for thousands of years. The first open-air archaeological museum on settlement history in Hessen is being created here to vividly convey the rich findings of archaeology. Five time stations are being built on the site, in which different cultural eras are shown with buildings, farmland and natural vegetation. You will be involved in the completion of various buildings from the Middle Iron Age (around 500 BC). These houses served and still serve different purposes in the museum - from housing to storage and animal husbandry. Under expert guidance, you will learn how to build the walls of the houses from wattle and daub. You may also have the opportunity to try out ancient techniques such as grinding grain, lighting fires (without a lighter) and archery. https://www.zeiteninsel.de/

For some years now, volunteer workcamps have been helping with excavation work on site in cooperation with archaeologists. Remains of buildings, roads and paths as well as everyday objects and building and barrier material have already been recovered. We are now planning to build a modern educational trail on the site, which visitors can use to learn about the history of the camp. This requires further important archaeological work, e.g. uncovering parts of the former camp road and the site of a camp kitchen, as well as clearing and cutting free overgrown building sites and paths. The work will be carried out under the expert guidance of at least one archaeologist.
The Ehrenhain Zeithain memorial commemorates the at least 25,000 people who were victims of malnutrition and catastrophic conditions in the Wehrmacht prisoner of war camp from 1941 to 1945.
As part of the German war of extermination against the Soviet Union, a prisoner of war camp was set up in Zeithain in 1941. Initially, only Soviet soldiers from the Red Army were detained in the camp. At the time, Ukrainian and Russian soldiers fought together in the Red Army. Up to 30,000 of them died due to inhumane living conditions. From February 1943, the camp served as a central military hospital for prisoners of war. During this period, prisoners from other nations also arrived. Italian soldiers represented a large group. The majority of them also died due to insufficient food and poor medical care. The dead were buried in five cemeteries in the municipality of Zeithain.
The memorial is located in one of the cemeteries. There is an exhibition and name plaques commemorating the victims of the camp.
The area of the POW camp was completely cleared after 1945. The huge 66-hectare site is now part of the Gohrischheide nature reserve and is an uncultivated natural landscape.
The aim of this workcamp is to give young people the opportunity to become familiar with archaeological challenges by researching historical heritage, but also to acquire knowledge about forms of remembrance work.
