Oi-cho, Anan city, Tokushima pref. Visiting Kakurin-ji temple.

Arrangeret af

This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with the local group since 2019. This village has been welcoming Ohenro (pilgrims) who visit 88 temples in Shikoku since long time ago. The pilgrims walk through this village before visiting Kakurin-ji temple; the 20th temple out of 88 temples of the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage. However, there are problems which should be solved such as aging and depopulation of the community these days, and locals haven't been able to find solutions for those problems. On the other hand, since more and more people from overseas visit for the Shikoku Ohenro Pilgrimage locals are trying to find new ways for omotenashi (hospitality). Volunteers who have been working on the project have come up with ideas for the reuse of vacant and abandoned land. Local host Oi have finally decided that they can freely renovate and modify the vacant houses. Moreover, the site is in a good location, with mountains, a river and fields. It is up to the volunteers from now on to decide how to develop the project. The aim is for the volunteer members to clean up the abandoned houses and village landscape and transform it into a village that people will want to visit to take photos, as it used to be a village where people came and went since ancient times.

Before 1990, the forests covered 10% of the land, but 7% today. It's caused by cutting trees without any control, forest fire, and global warming. Kuth Awendo Community Resource Center is a project that was initiated by CIVS in collaboration with the local community in 2019 with an aim to build and strengthen the community’s capacity to be self-reliant and to improve their living standards. The Centre achieves this by demonstrating how to utilize the locally available resources to develop the community.

The Center has been collaborating with the local community in various development fields through diverse capacity-building programs support and services they offer. The center provides a community hub for access of free training in computer skills especially to the youths. This enables them to have increased ICT knowledge and exposure in the evolving world of technology.

The center runs a kindergarten with about 90 children aged between 3-7 years who are either vulnerable to poverty, orphans, infected or affected with HIV/AIDS. The children get free education and meals at the school. In the evening they go back home where they stay with their caregivers or guardians.

Additionally, the Centre has a Model Farm which is an agricultural-based unit that offers space for practical-oriented training in the field of agriculture. This provides the community with an opportunity to learn how to carry out various best farming operations and practices of various crops to maximize food production and improve food security and income generation.

Volunteers on this program facilitate training and extra-curricular activities for the beneficiaries. The idea of the centre is to provide hands on training, so as to be self-reliant. The centre also addresses issues of the local communities in regard to sustainable livelihoods.
Volunteers will work together with the communities in crafting strategies which have the capacity to achieve zero hunger amongst the beneficiaries as well as the surrounding communities and beyond. Volunteers will also have an opportunity to engage in indoor and outdoor games with the beneficiaries. It is basically an opportunity for international volunteers to appreciate local initiatives by the surrounding communities in their humble efforts to put hunger into the archives of history in Chimanimani.

Kost og logi

Participatory Organic Research and Training (PORET). PORET Trust works with the community to address hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. The aim of PORET is to support the farmers in the low rainfall area of Chaseyama in Zimbabwe in adopting techniques and skills which are essential for them, their families and the whole area to survive and attain a sustainable, productive and healthy life situation. At Chaseyama, we have begun creating a space in which people can learn adapted techniques and methods that improve the quality of community life. And several farmers in Chaseyama have begun adopting ideas that are relevant to their own sites. We are currently planning to expand our work since the demand is growing in the face of the climate change problems we are facing today.

At the beginning of the camp there will be a day of introductions and getting to know the place with team building activities to promote a good group atmosphere. Each activity will be preceded by an explanation of the meaning of the activity and specifics related to the history, place and context. Most of the activities will be related with the general management of the land. In particular they will be related to vegetable growing and management of vegetable garden, fruit and vegetable picking and processing, taking care and watering small trees and plants, small building, manual and art projects with wood and recycled materials. Tasks can be organised in small groups (2-3 people) who take turns in the activities. Activities last from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Lunch is prepared by the volunteers that will turn day by day. Dish washing also will be in charge of volunteers. Afternoons are free. In the evenings, collective activities are encouraged, perhaps around a campfire or with board games and musical instruments. The workcamp will be hosted by Alice, who has started her project to create the A Naca agri-bike camp in the town of Limina, in the province of Messina. The project aims to revitalise the Sicilian rural areas and protect them from being destroyed by fire. The A Naca agri-bike camp is located on a non-intensive farm in an unspoilt and sparsely populated area where volunteers can learn about regenerative agriculture and sustainability. It focuses on environmental sustainability, aims to connect people with nature and also provides a place for bikers to stop or repair their bikes, as well as welcoming hikers.

The main works are planting vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc at the eco-farming camp. Also, volunteers may work on making fences to protect the farm, etc. Quite tiring but let's enjoy it.

Arrangeret af

Since 2000 we have had volunteers around the world joining our summer programs which were designed around building sustainable vegetable farming facilities. Over the years we have learned that developing eco-friendly and sustainable farming facilities does require a lot of research on improving our farming methods, learning the best practices from local farmers on improving the crop quality and perseverance despite the setbacks which were imminent in harsh Mongolian continental climate, with long, frigid winters and short, warm summers.
We are hoping to transform our eco-friendly vegetable farming facility into a sustainable organic farming training center which teaches the low income families how to grow healthy greens on their own. Organic fruits and vegetables are sparse and expensive in Mongolia which makes them unaffordable for many low income families. We are planning to donate any crops from our facilities to families in need in addition to providing them with the knowledge of how to grow their own crops.

Rejsevejledning til mødested

The secret remedy to, make the most of your time while volunteering in Zimbabwe is to adapt to the local environment. It important to highlight each and every project is unique, hence volunteers should make the most of their time with the community they serve, since this is a chance of a life time, to work and live with people in their respective communities, just like them

Hiiumaa according to the Nordic sagas emerged from the Baltic Sea as a small islet more than 10 000 years ago. The island of Hiiumaa was first mentioned in historical documents as a deserted island called Dageida in 1228. The first inhabitants settled down at the end of the 13th century. Nowadays Hiiumaa is the second biggest island of Estonia with the area of 965 sq. km and the population around 10 000. It has many historical and nature sights, and there are kind people known for their hospitality and good sense of humor. The island is referred as a remote area of Europe, so EstYES feels particularly proud developing international voluntary projects for 20 years there. For years EstYES has been cooperating with farms all over Estonia for solidarity and practical support to local people who work in agricultural sector keeping traditional life style and developing new eco-farming despite of all difficulties. Lepaniidi Farm on Hiiumaa Island is one of such projects. This is an organic farm promoting sustainable lifestyle, and camp is proposed for volunteers who appreciate and share its values, want to learn more about it and to help hard working people.
