The restoration of the Path called On the Trail of the Wolf will allow a better use of the Wildlife Area with a more complete and authentic experience for visitors. The route is designed as a kind of excursion narrated in continuity with the characteristic stories of the historic center of Pretoro (The country of wolves and snakes). The proposed path becomes formative for those who want to know better the populations of Lupo Appenninico present on the Maiella and at the same time exciting in anticipation of the encounter with the wolves hosted in the area. The volunteers will collaborate in the different phases of the renewal of the existing path and will be able to improve their knowledge of wolves, the Park and the town of Pretoro, one of the most typical villages of the Maiella.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

The hostel is composed by four rooms. The baths, in common, are two, for women and for men. There are many common spaces, multimedia equipment and internet. Great attention to food quality.

Lage und Freizeit

The deep valleys that cross the East Maiella from the South West to the North East, represent the peculiar element of the area. The highlands of the Maielletta, located in front of some of the most important peaks of the Maiella, open gradually widening towards the sea and shape a landscape still forcefully rural from 400 -500 meters above sea level to the coastal area. Wood, stone, wrought iron, artistic ceramics, ancient gastronomic recipes embellish that ancient culture of strong attachment to their land. The National Park has enhanced all this.

Nearest train stations are Pescara and Chieti; nearest airports are Pescara and Rome. Bus Pescara - Chieti - Pretoro only on weekdays. We offer shuttle service 8 places to and from Chieti and Pescara. null

Arbeit

Volunteers will help their organic farm by weeding in the rice and vegetable fields, planting vegetables, taking care of goats and chicken and also renovate the trails and the traditional house, help their house works such as cooking, washing, carrying the stuffs from the down village. Be ready to work for quite a long time (05:30-18:00 with some brakes) and hard. Kids may sometimes be separated to plan in the nature with care of some adults.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Maki: Volunteers will sleep in a few rooms of the volunteers' house that is a very beautiful cultural heritage and equips the basic facilities such as water, electricity, toilets and a bath room! They will have meals, meetings and social life with Kyodo Gakusha members in the main building (just 30 meters far). Meals will be cooked by together with the members by turns. Sleeping bag is not necessary.
Tateya: Building for volunteers and a few members, 5 min. walk from the farm. Meals will be usually cooked by volunteers by turns. Sleeping bag is not necessary.

Lage und Freizeit

Both are located in the beautiful places near “Japanese Northern Alps”. Maki is in about 900 meters asl. and there is something remained here that most of Japanese areas have lost in modernization. Tateya is surrounded by the farms and 40 min. walk from the train station.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Family workcamp! This project is actively working for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities), organized together with Kyodo Gakusha since 2000, a cooperative community where people with various backgrounds such as mentally disadvantaged, people who are tired of city life, who want to learn farming, who want to live in the nature, etc. They have 5 communities in Japan incl. Maki and Tateya and grow animals and vegetables in ecological, organic way.
Maki is located in a very isolated area (not accessible for cars and we have to walk 4 km in the mountains!), so it once became an abandon village in 1970s and then, was revived by Kyodo Gakusha. Over 10 people incl. 2 families were living till several years ago, but less and less in these years (almost nobody in the winter), so vols. are needed even more!
Tateya is located on the hilly (less than Maki, but still a bit isolated) area where 30-40 members live and mainly do rice farming as well as growing cows and chicken.
*Outcome of this workcamp: In 2023, we had 4 short term workcamps and 1 LMTV project with 13 vols. who greatly contributed to their protecting the houses, farming and caring animals that was difficult to finish by the time they needed without volunteers! See the long-term goal of this project as Local SDGs made by the previous project leader at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/2019-ep3-188767935 (only in Japanese, sorry, but you can still enjoy the pictures!)

Arbeit

Children and parents will work together when possible (e.g. helping with cooking, collecting wood, harvesting vegetables and gardening). Work will be organized in two groups. The first one will be working in a nature reserve located 3km away from the campsite, their work will consist of mowing grass, raking and collecting grass. Please note that the meadows can be very wet; bring waterproof working shoes (or rubber boots), working gloves, a raincoat and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. The second group will be working on the campsite preparing food, collecting wood, doing maintenance tasks or working in the nearby forest.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

In tee-pees with a fireplace in the centre. Large families will have their tee-pees; smaller families will share tee-pees. You will sleep on wooden pads and mattresses stuffed with hay. The nights might be very cold, bring a very warm sleeping bag, camping mat and some warm clothes. You will bathe in a small river with cold water next to the campsite, the toilets are dry and outdoors. You will cook together as a group on a fireplace. The food is only vegetarian. You can charge your cell phone with a solar-electricity generator. There is limited phone coverage and no Wifi.

Lage und Freizeit

The campsite is in a remote part of the village of Lesna in the Bohemian Forest near the German border. The nearest bus stop is Stara Knizeci Hut and the nearest bigger town is Tachov. The campsite is located about 30 minutes walk from the nearest bus station.

Hiking in the surrounding countryside. You can visit the ruins of the Zahaji castle or go on trips to the Czech towns in the neighbourhood (e.g. Marianske Lazne). The project is situated on the border with Germany thus a trip to Germany could be an option. Besides, you can try archery, play games, handcraft or experience an Indian sauna. If you have any games, musical instruments or any other activity you could share or teach the group in the campsite conditions, you are welcome to bring them.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

The workcamp is organized in cooperation with EUROSOLAR. EUROSOLAR promotes renewable energies and a sustainable lifestyle; it engages in youth environmental education and organizes environmental summer camps for children, youth and families. The workcamp takes place in a remote but exceptionally beautiful, hilly area of the Bohemian Forest, near the western border of the Czech Republic. The campsite is isolated from civilization and we welcome volunteers who are fond of trying out a basic lifestyle in the forest and do not mind longer walks. The main goal is to help maintain meadows in a nature-protected area, maintain the campsite and enjoy nature. At this workcamp, you will actively contribute to the achievement of UN SDG15 Life on Land.

Anforderungen

Fee: 50 EUR/adult, 25 EUR/child. EUROSOLAR is an NGO with limited resources, therefore, we kindly ask participants to contribute to the budget of the workcamp. The fee serves as contributions for meals and administration costs of INEX-SDA. The fee must be covered in advance by a bank transfer to the account of INEX-SDA.

Bring clothes and shoes suitable for work, rubber boots and a raincoat, a warm sleeping bag, a sleeping mat and warm clothes for the night. To reach the workcamp you will take forest paths, therefore you need to pack your stuff in a backpack rather than in luggage. There is a strict no alcohol and drugs policy at the campsite.

This workcamp is for families with 5+ years old children or individuals. We expect participants to be nature lovers, open-minded, flexible and interested in living in an eco-friendly and community way. Every year, there are several children and family-friendly camps organised, so even if the accommodation and facilities are basic, they are suitable for children. Because the work will take place outside, beware of allergies to grass, pollen, insects, etc. On departure day, there are only 1-2 connections from Stara Knizeci Hut to take you back to Prague with arrival in the afternoon/evening, so take that into consideration when planning the trip. The food is traditionally vegetarian and consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
