Comentaris addicional

Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous area where people are highly dependent on agriculture to complement their living in addition to their daily work. However, due to shortage of water and small terraces on sloppy land the agriculture is unsustainable and farm output is not sufficient keeping in mind economic value it gets. Also due to steep terrain and small terraces automated machines have limited usage here. As a result we fear food security in the future as many people are or about to leave agriculture.

RUCHI campus is spread over an area of 3 hectares and has good fertile soil. We at present are using our campus for exploring options of pesticide free scientific farming using natural materials. We have successfully demonstrated, Wormicompost, NADEP compost, Kitchen Gardening, Agroforestry, floriculture, organic farming, orchard development here. At present we are gearing to install hydroponics system at our campus for demonstration, training and self sufficiency. In due course we would like to serve as demonstration centre for farmers.

Covid-19 has challenged our usual way of doing business and our dependency on digital technology is all time high. Having a digital footprint is no more a desire but a necessity for organizations. We have witnessed how people and organizations have used social media as a strong platform for awareness, networking, shopping, education, etc.

We aim to introduce and empower children on digital media in a few select NFE centres. Covid pandemic had increased demand of smart phones for a living and online classes for children. However, due to lack of knowledge these phones are still underutilized. We expect volunteers to educate children and parents on use of these digital devices to optimize their performance.

The environmental damage caused by us in last few decades due to ignorance, negligence and lifestyle changes is beyond measure and repair. The results of our activities can be seen in way nature is reacting: Global warming, cloud bursts, floods, long drought, unseasonal rains etc.

Treball

Volunteers under this project will be based in rural setting and involved in need based protection and conservation activities including creating awareness regarding environmental importance of fresh water. The saying ïf there is going to be a Third World War, it will be on water” goes well for this area too. Even though the area gets ample rainfall there is a perpetual shortage of water in dry months. The problem is more of management and not availability. Every drop of water needs to be conserved. Volunteers also expected to develop methodology to protect and replenish these fresh water sources.

Working closely with local community members following tasks shall be undertaken by volunteers.
• Mapping all fresh water bodies within project area.
• Evaluating their present conditions: availability, measuring flow rate, collecting water samples for testing.
• Devise methodology to protect and replenish these fresh water sources using traditional methods and locally available resources.
• Create awareness on conserving every drop of water through all possible means for drinking, household uses, agriculture and overall environment.
• Creating and executing protection plan for springs and other water bodies including cleaning and maintaining.

India, being one of the fastest emerging economy in the world is facing multitude problems due to rapid urbanization. Lack of waste management is one of them. It is sad to say that there is no solution in near sight as majority of our collected waste from cities is used for landfill. Things become worst in rural area where there is no waste system offered by government and therefore people are left to deal with it at their own. As a result people do what is most convenient to them: throwing it on road, streams, forest or even worst burn it.

Thanks to this ignorant behaviour of people our streams and fresh water sources are getting contaminated and choked, our landscape is being filled with plastics and people are slowly developing respiratory diseases.

During October 2017, RUCHI embarked on an innovative project called Waste Force with the help of 2 Italian interns without funds from any source. The project focuses on 3 dimensions: 1) Education, 2) Action and 3) Recycling workshops.

Since the project is of permanent nature, volunteers are free to join anytime (preferably from any Monday) and for any duration. RUCHI believes ”community development” cannot be achieved until women in our society are empowered and are respected within our society. Though a lot has been written about women and their contribution towards society but its a pity that their efforts are still monetarily not accounted in our national GDP. A women plays many roles within Indian society; a daughter, a wife, a mother, a home maker and even labourer to earn wages if need arises. Surprisingly after supporting her family in various ways she is mostly not consulted and involved in household decision making.

Adequate sanitation, together with good hygiene and safe water, are fundamental to good health and as well as social and economic development. The Sustainable Development Goal target 6.2 calls for adequate and equitable sanitation for all. Sanitation and hygiene are critical to health, survival, and development. Lack of these facilities leave people at risk for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related diseases. Garbage disposal is another serious problem and adversely impacts environment and their health. A movement through education and campaigning on WASH needs to be built up.

Since the project is of permanent nature, volunteers are free to join anytime (preferably from any Monday) and for any duration. The Ahero Community Resource Center is a project that was initiated by CIVS in collaboration with the local community in 2009 to strengthen the community’s capacity to be self-reliant and to improve their living standards. The Centre does this by demonstrating to the community how to use the locally available resources, to generate their own income. The Center has been serving the local community offering capacity building in a number of diverse programs. The programs include:

Early Childhood Education Program: The center runs a kindergarten with 75 children who are vulnerable, orphans and affected with HIV/AIDS. The children receive free education and meals but in the evening they go home to live with caregivers.

ICT and Work preparedness training: The center provides free training in computer skills and work preparedness to the young people to enable them to have an increased ICT access. It also prepares them for the job market by improving their employability.

The model farm: This is an agricultural unit which offers practical oriented training on Agri-Business by providing the community with opportunity to learn how to carry out farming operations and share best practices with them. This project encompasses greenhouses, open farm, chicken unit, fish pond, and other animals. The harvest is sold in the local markets and the proceeds used as a source of income that sustains the activities of the center.

Water and sanitation program: This project is focused on the treatment of tap water to become clean for drinking by the people in the community. The water is also sold at affordable price as part of the income generating activity in the center. The centre is also equipped with comprehensive rainwater harvesting infrastructure to fully utilize the short and heavy rains in.

Community microfinance program: The project started a locally-managed community bank from which groups and individuals can save some money and access financial related services.
Community advocacy program: The center has a training and events hall which provides a space for holding open forums for information sharing and discussion by community members on a regular basis. The center has therefore opened up space where the community members can engage with their leaders; and in turn leaders can share information and community concerns can be raised.

Feeding Program: from time to time the center runs a feeding program by offering lunch for a select group of needy children during school lunch break and during exams. This improves the concentration of the children in class and also their body nutrition. This program depends on availability of food and finances.

In addition to these programs, the center has been modified to also provide services to people with disability as a way of promoting inclusivity in the community.
