Work

Volunteers will share their time between animation of the center's residents (especially the children and teenagers living there) and maintaining the center's outside areas, including its vegetable garden. They may also be asked to do some other small tasks, such as helping to sort clothes donated to the center.

Recreational activities:
Half the time, volunteers will organize and lead activities for the center's residents, particularly children and teenagers. Some examples could be: group games, creative and artistic workshops, board games, walking excursions, going to the swimming pool, sports, movies, cultural visits, ...
The children are between 3 and 12 years old. However, it is impossible to predict in advance the number and ages of children who will be staying in the center at the time of the project. The children speak French.

The teenagers are between 13 and 17 years old. Some arrived in Belgium alone, without family members. Some of the teenagers are also mothers.

If there are not enough children and teenagers in the center during the workcamp, the volunteers will also organize activities for the adults living in the center.

The volunteers will receive the support of the center's animation team, who’s used to work with volunteers every summer. However, they will have some autonomy to offer their own activity ideas.

Outdoor maintenance:
The other half of the time, volunteers will work outside to make the center's environment more pleasant for residents. For example, they will plant and sow flowers, remove weeds, or help out in the center's vegetable garden. They will also carry out maintenance tasks on the playground.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will sleep in a mixed dormitory with bunk beds, in an annex building. Toilets are located in the same building, but for showers, volunteers will have to go to the main building. Volunteers will have access to the washing machines in the center’s laundry room and can leave their personal belongings (passport, money, etc.) in the safe at reception if they wish. They will have access to Wi-Fi. They will have tea and coffee available during the day in the staff kitchen.

Volunteers will be cooking their own meals in a small, basic kitchen. So feel free to bring your own recipe ideas, but keep in mind that it should be kept simple. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements so that we can do some shopping ahead.

Location and leisure

Rixensart is a small town located 25 km from Brussels and 7 km from Wavre. Rixensart still retains its country charm but you can feel its proximity to Brussels (40 minutes by train, 20 by car). The Fedasil center is located outside the city center, but a few steps from the famous lake of Genval, the cinema, shops, supermarkets, the train station…

Project hosted by

The Fedasil reception center for asylum-seekers in Rixensart hosts individuals or families who have requested asylum in Belgium. They hope, with this request, to get refugee status which will allow them to stay legally in the country. These people come, for example, from Palestine, Afghanistan, Eritrea, DRC, etc. and have fled situations of war, persecution, discrimination or environmental disasters. Before they can settle in Belgium and build their future there, their refugee status must be proven and granted through a long administrative process. In the meantime, they are hosted in this center near Brussels.

Always waiting, the residents of the center never know what tomorrow may bring them. Individual situations are multiple and complex, but never easy. The life of the Fedasil center in Rixensart reflects these individual tragedies and the hopes of the residents.

The Fedasil center of Rixensart has hosted groups of volunteers for many years.

Additional comments

The consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited inside the center.
This is an intense and demanding project, both in terms of emotions as in terms of activities. Volunteers will work 6 hours a day, but in addition to these working hours, they will also need to brainstorm and plan their activities. So don’t hesitate to already bring your activity ideas with you!

This project is a volunteering team, supported by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union. Compared to the usual workcamp participation scheme, some main financial and administrative differences must be underlined:  The participation to the ESC volunteering teams is subjects to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en  The volunteers do not have to pay any fee (not sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project  The volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on basis of 6€/day, once they arrive on the project in Belgium  The volunteers will receive a financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established in accordance with their travel distance  The volunteers need to register on the European Solidarity Corps Portal; CBB will organize their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project  The volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online by the ESC portal

Work

The aim of this project is both to improve the quality of the residents' stay in the center and to encourage exchanges between volunteers and residents, but also between residents. The residents are not a homogeneous group: they have different ages, nationalities, religions, lifestyles and life stories; there are sometimes major cultural differences between them.

The volunteers will work in several teams, which will likely be joined by residents of the center. On the one hand, they will participate in maintaining the residents' living environment (maintenance of green spaces and vegetable garden and other outdoor work, building benches, decorating a mural, etc). On the other hand, they will propose and participate in activities with the residents (cooking workshops, sports, themed evenings, etc.), particularly with the children. As the project takes place during school holidays, the children will indeed be present at the center. Feel free to bring your ideas of activities.

Accomodation and food

You will be accommodated in the center, in a mixed dormitory with bunk beds. The toilets and showers are located in a separate building. You can store your valuables in the dormitory (which your group will have a key to) or in the staff kitchen.

You will eat with the residents the food prepared by the center. On some days, you will eat the food that you prepared yourselves during the cooking workshops with the residents.

You will share the same living conditions as the residents, which are very basic.

Location and leisure

The Fedasil center in Sugny is located in the Ardennes region, in the south of Belgium, close to the French border. The center is very isolated; the region is sparsely populated and the nearest villages are 2 and 5 km away. It is surrounded by fields and woods; this site will therefore appeal to nature lovers.

In addition, the center has several sports fields and volunteers will have more than enough opportunities to enjoy leisure time and meetings with the residents. On the first evening, a drink will be organized, in order to welcome the volunteers and get to know the residents.

During the weekend, depending on what you decide, it will be possible to organize cultural visits and travel to the largest Belgian cities.

Project hosted by

The Fedasil reception centre for asylum-seekers in Sugny hosts people who have applied for asylum in Belgium. They have fled situations of war, persecution, discrimination or environmental disasters and hope, with this application, to get a refugee status that will allow them to reside legally in the country. Before being able to settle in Belgium and build their future there, they must therefore wait for their refugee status to be proven and granted through a long administrative process. During this time, they are hosted in this centre.

Always waiting, the residents of the centre live in uncertainty about the future and are sometimes subject to significant stress. Individual situations are multiple and complex, but never easy. Life at the Fedasil centre in Sugny reflects these individual dramas and the hopes of the residents.

Directions to meeting point

Saturday the 11th of July in Gedinne train station at 3.05 pm. It is important to be on time: as the station is 25 km away from the center, it will not be possible to make several trips back and forth to pick up latecomers.

Requirements

English, but some knowledge of French will be useful.
Some residents speak only French as a foreign language: this is often the case for children. Some adults are just beginning to learn French or are fluent; some know English, while others don't speak it at all. In all cases, English can be used to communicate with some people, and for others, you'll need to be creative in your communication!

Work

Volunteers will work with children aged 4 to 12 who live at the refugee centre. During the summer holidays (July and August), when school is closed, volunteers organise activities for and with the children. Creative volunteers design and lead games and workshops such as sports, music, arts, and language activities. The weekly programme is based on the ideas and input of the volunteer team.
Prior to the project, it combines a 3-day Erasmus+ training with two weeks of volunteering. The training focuses on team building, intercultural communication, sustainability, safe working practices and personal development while working with vulnerable children.
Arrival is 23 July, training 24–25 July, followed by two weeks of volunteering at AZC Emmen.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay at a small campsite about a 30-minute bike ride from the project site. Accommodation is in shared tents (two people per tent), provided by SIW, including air mattresses. In case of bad wether we can use a barn on the campsite. We ask volunteers to bring their own sleeping bag and pillow. Facilities include a kitchen, BBQ area, wooden meeting house, four toilets, three showers (one indoor, two heated outdoor), WiFi and a washing machine.

The group will cook together using the available facilities. A large tent is provided for cooking, shared meals, group activities and relaxing.

Acccomodation address:
Camping Emmerdennen
Oude Roswinkelerweg 118
7814RT Emmen NL

Location and leisure

Emmen is a lovely city in the north of the Netherlands with many summer activities. Volunteers will plan your free time together as a group. Some activities are already planned and are connected to the history and culture of the area.
All activities are optional, and the group will decide together what to do.

Possible free time activities include:
Visit a local festival
Visit Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen
Visit art work Broken Circle and Spiral Hill by Robert Smithson
A city trip to Groningen or Zwolle

Project hosted by

Refugee Centre Emmen (AZC Emmen) is located in the north of the Netherlands. The centre can accommodate around 500 refugees, specifically families with minor children whose asylum applications have been rejected. These families are eventually expected to return to their country of origin.

Our partner is the Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA), which provides accommodation during the asylum procedure and prepares asylum seekers for staying in the Netherlands, returning home, or onward migration. COA manages approximately 100 centres nationwide and is funded by the Ministry of Justice. In cooperation with De Vrolijkheid, creative activities are organised for children and teenagers at asylum centres.

Directions to meeting point

This information will be shared with the infosheet you'll receive.

Additional comments

*Volunteers are not allowed to take photos of the refugee families or children.

*Supported by Erasmus+, the project is open to participants from EU countries, Iceland, North Macedonia, Norway, Türkiye, or Serbia. Travel and visa costs are partially reimbursed, with sustainable travel encouraged.

Kuala Lumpur - Volunteers will meet at KL Sentral at 16:00 and need to arrive at the airport (KUL) by 14:00 on the first day and can leave the airport after 11:00 on the last day.

Work

Volunteers will be spilt into some small groups and assist the teachers for their classes of smaller children in the morning. In the afternoon, they can play and organize cultural activities with the children in the big room all together (e.g., dancing, games). Or sometimes, joined the workshops (music, sports, etc.) organized for the children by other volunteer group. Volunteers may sometimes have occasions to have no activities (e.g., national holidays), but alternative work such as supporting homeless people may be organized.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay in 2-3 rooms of the school (female and male are separated) and have simple breakfast to be provided by MOVE, school lunch and dinner in the outside restaurant. Sleeping bag is necessary (mat is also recommended since the floor is hard). No AC and simple condition, but safe water is provided and local style bath/ fridge are available.

Location and leisure

The school is located in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur (with the guard man for 24 hours!). Other activities - Sightseeing around Kuala Lumpur city (café, night market, China town, shopping malls, etc.) in the evenings (but need to come back by 21:00!), optional trip in the weekend to be organized and financed by the volunteers themselves.

Project hosted by

This project is actively working for SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities), organized together with Malaysian Organization of Volunteer Exchange (MOVE) since 2018 in this place. MOVE is a workcamp NGO founded in 2006. Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) was founded in 2011 to run the school providing education, cultural workshops, leisure activities and lunch to the children aged 6-18 who are not allowed to go to public schools due to the lack of citizenship. Many of them are refugees or immigrants from Myanmar, Indonesia, etc. while others have different backgrounds in their families such as poverty, drug addiction, child abuse, prostitution, etc. YCK operate in partnership with Ministry of Women and Child Welfare and got new rooms on the 3rd to 5th floors of the big building in 2025. The workcamps have been successful and in 2025, 59 vols. from Japan, Italy, Hong Kong and Spain joined 6 workcamps with creating great impact! You may wonder if the volunteering for short term can be useful for their education and even worry if they feel too sad and tired to repeat hi and bye. But children have got greatly motivated to study by having international big sisters/ brothers as one of their role models and felt happiness and encouragement by having reliable adult friends since they had been terribly neglected by the society.

Additional comments

Study theme - Refugees and other disadvantaged children in each country. Local SDGs (2030 goals) of YCK Participation fee - 1,100 MYR (237 EUR by the rate on 2026 Feb. 14) for 14 days, 850 MYR (184 EUR) for 9 days including the weekend and 750 MYR (162 EUR) to be paid on your arrivals. 10% less for repeaters of MOVE workcamps or those from less expensive countries. Other - The local camp leader will be a lady who was a student of YCK before! There might be also a co-leader from Japan. 1st week vols. (Aug. 02-08) can extend their stay till Aug. 10 and 2nd week vols. (Aug. 09-15) can start their stay from Aug. 07 if they want to join free days activities in the weekend. Requirements

Very high motivation and responsibility to work with the disadvantaged kids and to respect local culture/ way. Adaptable to the simple conditions such as hot climate without using AC in the night and sleeping on the hard floor. Good manner to keep the places clean and proper, sensitive behaviors especially to the children (the guidance will be done by YCK).
