The volunteers will support activities at Girasoli Land , located in Contrada Arenella, Caltanissetta. Over the 14 days, the programme will balance practical activities such as taking care of the vegetable garden and harvesting olives with days dedicated to visits, experiences, networking and socialising.In particular, the volunteers will visit a local olive oil mill to learn how olive oil is produced and will create small souvenirs made with extra virgin olive oil to take home, as well as engaging in networking with local organisations that manage assets and land confiscated from the Mafia, addressing issues related to the anti-Mafia movement, the rule of law, and social and environmental justice.A central element of the whole experience will be the cultural exchange, enriched by the presence of several beneficiaries of the I Girasoli ETS Association with migrant backgrounds who will play an active part in this adventure.Visits to various local venues are also planned to share moments of conviviality and socialising. Through these activities, the volunteers will promote ecological values, sustainable practices and artistic expression, whilst fostering integration and personal growth.

Logement et nourriture

Volunteers will stay in a house equipped with a 6-bed room and a 4-bed room, ensuring shared but comfortable living arrangements. Meals will be prepared on-site, with access to a kitchen and refrigerator for use as needed. The association will be responsible for purchasing groceries, taking care of specific dietary needs such as vegetarian preferences, allergies, or intolerances. The house also includes a Wi-Fi connection to support volunteers during their stay.

Situation, loisirs

The house is located in the province of Caltanissetta, near the Girasoli Land , offering volunteers a unique opportunity to explore the surrounding areas. While the location is remote and far from public transport stops, the association will provide transportation during free days. Volunteers, together with their group leader, will plan visits to Caltanissetta and other nearby attractions, ensuring a balance between relaxation and cultural exploration.

The non-profit organization I Girasoli was founded in 2004, and by then is involved in social projects promoting hospitality, protection and integration of refugees and asylum seekers. The main aim of the organization is providing work opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers, and sensitizing the local community about migration. The organization manages several SAI (Reception and Integration System) offering hospitality and protection including an integration process aiming at refugees and migrants personal needs, social and mental well-being. This process includes: school, work, health, bureaucracy and personal expression thanks to cultural and artistic activities. This activity is in the frame of the European Solidarity Corps Programme funded by the European Union.

Remarques

Volunteers must be prepared to participate in a variety of activities throughout the activity, including agricultural tasks and interactions with children, young people, and the local community to foster inclusive and joyful experiences. Adaptability and a proactive attitude are essential. Participants should bring comfortable clothing, outdoor-appropriate footwear, autumn clothes, a hat for sun protection, mosquito repellent, a towel, personal hygiene items, an umbrella, and anything else suited to outdoor activities and weather conditions.

Volunteers will work at the villa, a property confiscated from the Mafia, in morning and afternoon sessions, for a maximum of 7 hours per day, 5 days per each week.Over the 14 days, volunteers will help maintain the green areas (cleaning, cutting, watering, etc.), help painting rooms and windows, assembling furniture (beds, wardrobes, etc.) and put the finishing touches to the villa.The villa is still being renovated, so professional construction workers will be on site to complete some of the work and guide the volunteers when needed.The renovation of two of the three floors of the villa are expected to be completed during the project and volunteers will help prepare for the Grand Opening of the International Youth Center with public authorities.Before the opening, they will support logistics and get the rooms ready for guests. On the opening day itself, they will welcome guests, take photos and help create social media content.Volunteers will follow shifts for other daily tasks.The work is manual and can be sometimes physically demanding, so volunteers must be in good physical condition.

Logement et nourriture

All the volunteers will be accommodated in the villa in rooms equipped with camp beds. Each room will be shared by 3 or 4 volunteers. There will be different toilet and shower rooms available. Running water and electricity are available. Heating system in the villa is underconstruction but should be available during the camp time.IMPORTANT Volunteers should be aware of a very basic condition and willing to live as such Volunteers will be responsible for cleaning their room and common spaces.Food will be provided by external catering. Vegetarian option can be available.

Situation, loisirs

Palermo is a big Italian town on the northwestern coast of Sicily. The villa is located a bit far from the city center of Palermo, but it s connected by bus/tram. Palermo is a beautiful city where there are many sights and places to spend free time.There is a cafe and supermarket very close to the villa where volunteers can go on foot.

InformaGiovani is renovating the once house of a mafia businessman, a big villa that is being transformed into a youth and social centre and a hostel. The project is implemented in co-operation with a network of local association dealing with social issues, education to legality, social solidarity.The Centre will be officially opened during the camp with a big public event.A presentation of the project can be seen at www.ignet.eu/villa

Good phisical condition required, manual work can be demanding

Remarques

Good physical condition and high motivation are requested due to the manual work. Volunteers must be aware that some of the areas where working is required can be dusty and dirty. Safety clothes (gloves and helmet) will be provided when needed. Volunteers are required to bring their own working clothes and strong shoes.IMPORTANT Volunteers should be aware and willing to adapt to extremely basic living conditions.
