Work

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environment protection by joining outdoor cleanup tasks.
These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or run solely by SEEDS. We also aim to involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and carry out their own trash cleaning projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. Volunteers can choose one of the two options below, included as hands-on volunteering activity in the camp:
A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash collection in the area, and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe.
A day trip to the Reykjanes Peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.
Please note that all activities are subject to weather conditions and the availability of our partners.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking medium to long distances during the cleanups, and during other activities such as sightseeing. Since a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule. Depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities as planned.

Accomodation and food

SEEDS volunteers stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with an equipped kitchen, dining and living room, bathrooms, showers and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Accommodation is in shared rooms, with up to 6 people per room. Please bring your own towel.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, situated between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.

The Environmentally Aware & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS collaborates with the Icelandic Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the City of Reykjavík, and several local stakeholders on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline. Partners include the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coastal cleaning, SORPA, the waste collection & management entity in the capital area, and Whales of Iceland, an exhibit showcasing life-size models of whales and porpoises to educate the public about their lives and the impact of human activity on their existence.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on July 29 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will receive instructions on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am in the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time.

Additional comments

English will be the language in the camp; basic conversational skills are needed.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 450 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. It includes food, accommodation, transport from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), activities, and one trip combined with the trash collection (Hot River or Reykjanes).

The camp is based at Alviðra, which offers a range of activities to connect people with nature, such as community gardens, wildlife workshops, school programs, and hikes. As part of the camp, volunteers help maintain the center through tasks like gardening, renovating the house and other projects such as removing old fences to protect wildlife, marking walking paths, and potentially do forestry work like trimming or planting trees.

This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Location and leisure

The accommodation is located an hour drive south-east from Reykjavík. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre and sits under Ingólfsfjall, The Mountain of Ingólfur, with a view of Eyjafjallajökull where the volcanic eruptions began in March and April 2010.

The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found throughout the area, which is a popular attraction among both foreign and local visitors.

The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away, with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafés and bars.

Additional excursions (e.g. Golden Circle, the South Shore or Reykjanes Peninsula or a day-trip to the city of Reykjavík) can be arranged at discount fares depending on time availability, weather conditions, and the number of volunteers interested.

The weather may be cold or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and/or waterproof clothes.

This camp is part of SEEDS' ongoing efforts to raise awareness, promote engagement in environmental issues and to support sustainability, organic and permaculture farming, social inclusion, education and hands-on actions in the field. Volunteers will gain insights into local and global challenges through non-formal educational activities such as hands-on work, visits, discussions, and workshops.

SEEDS volunteers have the opportunity to participate in different projects in collaboration with Landvernd (the Icelandic Environmental Organization), the EcoVillage at Sólheimar, the Icelandic Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, Umhverfisstofnun (the Icelandic Environmental Agency) and Blái Herinn (the Blue Army).

SEEDS volunteers will take on a variety of activities, depending on weather conditions and the needs of our partners including working in the forestry section and vegetable greenhouses in the EcoVillage, as well as participating in a nationwide project to raise awareness of ocean pollution, plastic waste, and engage the group in hands-on cleanup efforts in the area, allowing volunteers to make a direct impact!

Meeting time for the camp is at 16:00 (4:00 pm) on July 29 at the SEEDS Office in Reykjavik. Transportation from Reykjavík to the camp and back, costs EUR 30 one way or EUR 60 for both ways.

Note that this is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; this project has a smaller volunteer work part and emphasises the personal learning process over the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions.
Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant will be selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods, and laptops, if possible. While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture through active participation: capturing it, engaging with it, and showcasing their work throughout the camp. One of our goals is to empower young people to use photography to highlight environmental and cultural subjects and issues.
Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium to long distances during activities and working within a flexible schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.
This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay, SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and the Hot River hike excursions.

This is the nineteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photography projects. In 2010 we also began offering these camps for teenagers. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-focused learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, and creating conceptual frameworks that highlight each participant’s individual style.

Work

The renovation team will carry out essential repairs, maintenance, and improvement tasks to support the community in the Bordeyri area. Activities include, but are not limited to:

- Painting interior walls and creating murals
- Laying new floors
- Replacing doors and windows
- Installing or renovating playgrounds
- Insulating walls and improving energy efficiency
- Performing gardening and landscaping tasks
- Supervising or assisting others in these roles

All activities are carried out with safety as a priority, ensuring a secure environment for participants and the community. The renovated houses and facilities will be used for local community purposes, providing long-term benefits to Bordeyri residents.

This project is ideal for participants interested in hands-on work, construction, and community development, contributing directly to the revitalization of this rural Icelandic community. Work will depend on weather conditions, so flexibility is essential. Working hours are approximately 5 hours
a day, 5 days a week. As the Icelandic saying goes: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes—it might change.”

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay at the Worldwide Friends house in Brú, which can accommodate up to 30 people. The house features 12 double rooms, several bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, common areas, workshop rooms, and galleries.
Wireless internet access and a washing machine are available for all volunteers.
Food is included for the duration of the work camp. Volunteers are expected to share responsibilities for cooking and cleaning. Meals are well-balanced and healthy, featuring whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. Vegetarian diet encouraged.

Location and leisure

Worldwide Friends Iceland is running a center of Environment & Sustainability near the crossroads to the West, South, and North of Iceland. The center is called BRÚ, and it is located in Hrutafjordur which is 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra, on the R1.
Keep in mind that is a 1-hour drive to the closest city (Borganes). Based just off the main road, we are not set in a town, therefore the only way to get around is by car. Brú's stunning surrounding countryside offers the perfect tonic to relax and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Around the house, you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, waterfalls, rivers, canyons, and craters. The purpose of the center is to protect nature in the area and to raise awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors who are coming to the area. The area nearby is great for hiking.
The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, or theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

WF Iceland will organize reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Work

We focus on natural healing, wellness, and preventive health care. At the clinic we integrate a holistic approach by making plants and food essential components of each patient’s treatment process.
Participants support the clinic’s sustainability and wellness goals through activities in the greenhouses and herbal gardens. The main tasks include planting, harvesting, and maintaining crops, as well as controlling pests and ensuring plant health.

A special aspect of this placement is contributing to the production of the clinic’s signature herbal tea — assisting in every stage of the process: growing, drying, and packaging the herbs. This tea is later used in the clinic’s meals and treatments, supporting the therapeutic nutrition provided to patients.
This experience offers a meaningful way to understand the connection between sustainable agriculture, health, and natural rehabilitation.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay in a house operated by The Natural Health Association in Hveragerði.
Located within the medical compound, the house features 9 single rooms, a fully equipped
kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a shared common area for relaxation and group activities.

We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of ingredients, including whole grains, seasonal
fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian/vegan options. To help reduce
our carbon footprint, we limit meat consumption and promote sustainable, plant-based meals.
We do not provide soft drinks or candies, but we do offer plenty of ingredients for baking
delicious snacks. As we bake our own bread, feel free to bring your favorite golden-crust recipe
from home!

Please inform us in advance if you have any food allergies or special dietary needs, so we can accommodate you properly.

There’s plenty to enjoy in Hveragerði, a charming town known as the hot spring capital of Iceland. Surrounded by geothermal activity and stunning landscapes, it’s a perfect place for both outdoor adventures and relaxation. You’ll find scenic hiking trails, greenhouses warmed by natural hot springs, a geothermal park, a swimming pool, cozy cafés, and local art galleries.

WF Iceland organizes affordable weekend and one-day excursions to Iceland’s most stunning natural sites — including waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic and geothermal areas, lava fields, hot springs, and more.

Work

This immersive one-week program in Reykjavík brings together photography, visual storytelling, and journalism, set against Iceland’s striking natural and urban landscapes. Participants work collaboratively as a group around a shared monthly theme, using images and narrative to explore Icelandic culture, nature, and contemporary society.

Throughout the week, participants strengthen their technical photography skills, develop a sharper journalistic perspective, and refine their creative voice through hands-on workshops, field assignments, group discussions, and feedback sessions. The program encourages critical thinking, storytelling with purpose, and ethical visual communication, while fostering collaboration in an international environment.

In addition to visual production, participants actively contribute to Worldwide Friends’ magazine, UNA, by writing articles, conducting interviews, designing layouts, and editing content. This provides real-world experience in collaborative media production and allows participants to see their work published and shared with a wider audience.

The program culminates in a public photo exhibition in Reykjavík, fully curated and produced by the group. Participants collectively shape the exhibition concept, select works, and present their shared vision to the public—celebrating both individual perspectives and the power of collaborative storytelling.

Accomodation and food

The house is located 45 minutes by bus from City Hall on the outskirts of Reykjavik. It is a nice cozy place on top of the hill with a nice view. The house can host up to 10 people. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, 1 toilet, 1 Bathroom, a living room, 2 mixed dormitories, a Greenhouse, and a tool room.
NOTE: WE HAVE A CAT AT THE ACCOMODATION!

Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. Golden Circle is Included in the camp fee!

This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

The area around the house is also great for hiking. Plan ahead, share your travel plans, stay on the trail, properly dispose of waste, leave areas as you found them, and do not approach or feed wildlife. Don't go for high and steep mountains without a professional guide.

Note that this is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; this project has a smaller volunteer work part and emphasises the personal learning process over the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions.
Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant will be selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods, and laptops, if possible. While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture through active participation: capturing it, engaging with it, and showcasing their work throughout the camp. One of our goals is to empower young people to use photography to highlight environmental and cultural subjects and issues.
Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium to long distances during activities and working within a flexible schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.
This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay, SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and the Hot River hike excursions.

This is the nineteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photography projects. In 2010 we also began offering these camps for teenagers. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-focused learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, and creating conceptual frameworks that highlight each participant’s individual style.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environment protection by joining outdoor cleanup tasks.
These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or run solely by SEEDS. We also aim to involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and carry out their own trash cleaning projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. Volunteers can choose one of the two options below, included as hands-on volunteering activity in the camp:
A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash collection in the area, and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe.

The Environmentally Aware & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS collaborates with the Icelandic Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the City of Reykjavík, and several local stakeholders on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline. Partners include the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coastal cleaning, SORPA, the waste collection & management entity in the capital area, and Whales of Iceland, an exhibit showcasing life-size models of whales and porpoises to educate the public about their lives and the impact of human activity on their existence.

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on August 07 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will receive instructions on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am in the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time.

The accommodation is located an hour drive south-east from Reykjavík. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre and sits under Ingólfsfjall, The Mountain of Ingólfur, with a view of Eyjafjallajökull where the volcanic eruptions began in March and April 2010.

The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found throughout the area, which is a popular attraction among both foreign and local visitors.

The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away, with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafés and bars.

The renovation team will carry out essential repairs, maintenance, and improvement tasks to support the community in the Bordeyri area. Activities include, but are not limited to:

- Painting interior walls and creating murals
- Laying new floors
- Replacing doors and windows
- Installing or renovating playgrounds
- Insulating walls and improving energy efficiency
- Performing gardening and landscaping tasks
- Supervising or assisting others in these roles

All activities are carried out with safety as a priority, ensuring a secure environment for participants and the community. The renovated houses and facilities will be used for local community purposes, providing long-term benefits to Bordeyri residents.

This project is ideal for participants interested in hands-on work, construction, and community development, contributing directly to the revitalization of this rural Icelandic community. Work will depend on weather conditions, so flexibility is essential. Working hours are approximately 5 hours
a day, 5 days a week. As the Icelandic saying goes: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes—it might change.”

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay at the Worldwide Friends house in Brú, which can accommodate up to 30 people. The house features 12 double rooms, several bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, common areas, workshop rooms, and galleries.
Wireless internet access and a washing machine are available for all volunteers.
Food is included for the duration of the work camp. Volunteers are expected to share responsibilities for cooking and cleaning. Meals are well-balanced and healthy, featuring whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, and dairy products. Vegetarian diet encouraged.

Location and leisure

Worldwide Friends Iceland is running a center of Environment & Sustainability near the crossroads to the West, South, and North of Iceland. The center is called BRÚ, and it is located in Hrutafjordur which is 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra, on the R1.
Keep in mind that is a 1-hour drive to the closest city (Borganes). Based just off the main road, we are not set in a town, therefore the only way to get around is by car. Brú's stunning surrounding countryside offers the perfect tonic to relax and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Around the house, you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, waterfalls, rivers, canyons, and craters. The purpose of the center is to protect nature in the area and to raise awareness of sustainability among the locals and the visitors who are coming to the area. The area nearby is great for hiking.
The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, or theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

SEEDS volunteers stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with an equipped kitchen, dining and living room, bathrooms, showers and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Accommodation is in shared rooms, with up to 6 people per room. Please bring your own towel.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

The Environmentally Aware & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS collaborates with the Icelandic Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the City of Reykjavík, and several local stakeholders on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline. Partners include the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coastal cleaning, SORPA, the waste collection & management entity in the capital area, and Whales of Iceland, an exhibit showcasing life-size models of whales and porpoises to educate the public about their lives and the impact of human activity on their existence.

Meeting time is at 16:00 (4:00 pm) on August 16 at the SEEDS Office in Reykjavik.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 450 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. It includes accommodation, food and one trip to the Hot River area in Reykjadalur. The fee does not include the transportation from Reykjavík to the camp and back, which costs EUR 30 one way or EUR 60 for both ways.

Note that this is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; this project has a smaller volunteer work part and emphasises the personal learning process over the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions.
Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant will be selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods, and laptops, if possible. While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture through active participation: capturing it, engaging with it, and showcasing their work throughout the camp. One of our goals is to empower young people to use photography to highlight environmental and cultural subjects and issues.
Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium to long distances during activities and working within a flexible schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.
This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay, SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and the Hot River hike excursions.

This is the nineteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photography projects. In 2010 we also began offering these camps for teenagers. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-focused learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, and creating conceptual frameworks that highlight each participant’s individual style.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on August 16 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will receive instructions on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am in the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time.

Requirements

Participation fee EUR 650 (Euros), which needs to be transferred to SEEDS the latest one month before the camp starts to confirm the placement. It includes food, accommodation, transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the Golden Circle and Hot river hike excursions. We will visit spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, a volcano crater, the Thingvellir National Park and much more.

2 Locations: Hveragerdi & Solheimar Eco-Village
Participants will have the opportunity to visit one or two projects. During this project, the placements will be based on availability and Organization needs. Both projects are within 30 min distance.

Please note that this project is a learning/exchange project where everyone is expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience, and not a standard work camp.

Tasks: Coordinate the work, organize house schedule, and leisure activities, shop, supervise cooking sessions and plan excursions. Organize Workshops. Apart from these additional responsibilities, you will participate in general activities as a volunteer. Projects are organized with international volunteers.

Main Project Activities: Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Gardening & Renovation. Improve the environmental education and consciousness of the project’s participants.

Hveragerði:
The work in this camp is coordinated by The Natural Health Association. They have a Horticultural and Environmental Department, including Forestry, Gardening, and Agriculture (Greenhouse), which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. The work will be in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The agriculture that is practiced in the center is organic/bio.

The workcamp leaders will work as a team under the supervision of the Project Manager of the organization, and the Manager from the NHAI.

Sólheimar:
The main work in this camp will be in forestry called Ölur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna.
The main activities, but not limited to are; Forestry; managing, planting, using, conserving, and repairing forests, woodlands, and associated resources for human and environmental benefits. Agriculture: cultivating soil; planting; raising, and harvesting crops. Horticulture: growing fruits, vegetables, and plants. Environmental work on the property (Renovation when needed)
*During winter the work might include snowplowing. Participants might be required to help in the workshops in Solheimar.

Accomodation and food

Hveragerði:
House operated by The Natural Health Association in Hveragerði. Located within the medical compound, the house features 9 single rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a shared common area for relaxation and group activities.
House Capacity: 9 participants total

Sólheimar:
The house is across the village and has 4 double rooms with a private bathroom each, a fully equipped kitchen, and common areas. The common areas are shared with some of the local workers.
House Capacity: 8 participants total

Food is provided and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, vegetarian/vegan options.

Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.

We encourage our volunteers to try vegan and vegetarian food during their stay with us.

Hveragerði:
There’s plenty to enjoy in Hveragerði, a charming town known as the hot spring capital of Iceland.
Surrounded by geothermal activity and stunning landscapes, it’s a perfect place for both outdoor
adventures and relaxation. You’ll find scenic hiking trails, greenhouses warmed by natural hot
springs, a geothermal park, a swimming pool, cozy cafés, and local art galleries.

Sólheimar:
A number of interesting attractions are located within the Sólheimar village itself, such as the
charming coffee shop Græna Kannan, Vala Market & Art Boutique: to shop for beautifully hand-
crafted pieces, visit Skalholt Cathedral, and workshops run by local businesses like candle-
making, carpentry, weaving, and soap-making. Surrounded by geothermal activity and stunning
landscapes, it’s a perfect place for both outdoor adventures and relaxation in the local swimming
pool and gym.

Sólheimar is an eco-village in Iceland and is renowned for its ecological, artistic, and international community ethics. Its current population size is about 100 people.
Now powered with thermal and solar energy, the village is fully sustainable, boasting greenhouses, an arboretum, egg-laying facilities and forestry programmes.

Directions to meeting point

We will pick you up from BSI Bus Station, please when you are on the bus let us know. WF staff will pick you up outside the bus station. We will communicate via WhatsApp, there's free Wi-Fi on the bus and at the terminal. If your arrival to BSI is after 20:00 hrs., we won’t be able to pick you up. In this case you can book a hotel for your stay or take a taxi to our Accommodation.

This role combines driver, logistics support, and house caretaker responsibilities for international volunteer workcamps across Iceland.

As a driver, your tasks include picking up and dropping off volunteers from the city center, airport, or camps, transporting participants to work sites and excursions, and supporting logistics such as grocery shopping for large groups. You may also assist in selecting suitable locations for environmental activities such as beach clean-ups.

As a house caretaker, your responsibilities include basic repairs and maintenance when needed, or supervising volunteers performing these tasks. You will help coordinate cleaning teams, support household management, and ensure the houses remain organized and safe. Occasionally, you may assist with cooking when required.

You will travel around Iceland, as the organization operates several volunteer houses located in different parts of the country. Flexibility is essential, as tasks and schedules may change depending on project needs.

Work activities may also depend on weather conditions, so adaptability is important. As locals say, if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait five minutes—it might change.

Working hours may vary depending on the workcamps and organizational needs. However, you will have two days off per week, allowing time to explore Iceland’s unique landscapes. When required, you may also support the organization by leading camps, welcoming participants, and introducing volunteers to the program and project activities.

Accomodation and food

During the workcamps, leaders will stay in shared accommodation in a fully equipped house. Rooms are double or quadruple, and beds and bedding are provided. The house includes essential facilities such as a washing machine and Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable stay during the project.

Food is provided for the duration of the camp. Participants share responsibility for cooking and cleaning, contributing to a cooperative living environment. The organization provides a balanced and healthy selection of food, including whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian and vegan options.

Excursions may include visits to some of Iceland’s unique natural attractions, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, and even icebergs.

The program also focuses strongly on intercultural learning and exchange. In the evenings, volunteers from different countries will have the opportunity to present their culture in an informal and creative way. This could include a presentation, games, music, theatre, or any other activity you would like to share. We encourage participants to bring photos, traditional food, music, or other items related to their culture to create enjoyable and informative cultural evenings.

This program offers a unique opportunity to spend meaningful time in Iceland with international volunteers, sharing knowledge, exploring creativity, discussing environmental issues, and learning from different cultures.

The areas around the houses are also excellent for hiking and exploring nature. Participants are asked to respect the environment by planning ahead, staying on marked trails, properly disposing of waste, and leaving natural areas as they were found. Wildlife should not be approached or fed, and climbing high or steep mountains without a professional guide is not recommended.

Working hours are approximately 5 to 7 hours per day during weekdays, mainly focused on environmental work. The schedule includes lunch and coffee breaks. Please note that working hours may vary depending on the workcamps and the organization’s needs. Participants will have two days off per week.

Requirements

Handyman skills (appliance installation, carpentry, basic plumbing, minor electrical wiring, maintenance, and renovation) DIY skills, motivation, and personal qualities are just as important.
A driving Licence is essential. Winter driving experience (snow/icy roads) is considered an advantage.
An Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate level of English is required. Other languages are seen as an advantage.
Our leaders have to be Positive and Highly Motivated. Proactivity and Organizational skills are a must. Time-management skills and ability to work under time pressure during high peaks of the season.
