The volunteers will work in morning or afternoon shifts, with one day off per week. Shifts are adapted to the specific needs of the house. To ensure full coverage, the two volunteers present during the same period will not share the same shift or the same day off (exceptions may be considered and evaluated by the team if necessary).

Accomodation and food

They stay in the same shelter house, in a single or double room with basic conditions.

Interacting with the local people can be challenging due to the location, but despite being on the other side of the river, there is good bus coverage to reach the city center (Salamanca, which has many attractions to visit) or you can go on foot.

Location and leisure

Salamanca is a historic city in western Spain, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and stunning architecture. The city is home to the University of Salamanca, founded in 1134, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe. The iconic Plaza Mayor, a grand square surrounded by arcades, is the heart of the city and a popular gathering spot.

Salamanca’s architectural gems include the Old Cathedral (Catedral Vieja) and New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva), which showcase Romanesque and Baroque styles. Other highlights are the Casa de las Conchas, a beautiful building adorned with scallop shells, and the Puente Romano (Roman Bridge), dating back to the 1st century.

The city has a vibrant atmosphere, thanks to its large student population, and is filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants offering both traditional Spanish cuisine and modern dishes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salamanca is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, with its charming streets, squares, and gardens making it a delightful place to explore.

Project hosted by

Cáritas Salamanca has a shelter for people with HIV and other illnesses, where it also covers basic needs and offers the possibility of starting a personal recovery process that allows individuals to achieve the highest possible degree of autonomy.

Volunteering participation takes place in the shelter for people with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses, offering the opportunity to experience volunteering in a social project, coming closer to a specific reality of exclusion.

Work

The purpose of this workcamp is to participate in the recovery of old paths and learn the history of the Pyrenees, learn about culture and nature, and participate in both with different activities of preservation and conservation.
The technical work that will be carried out in the field of work consists, in general, in different tasks related to the recovery of the old roads of the valley.
The following are the main ones:
- Road clearing: mowing grass, bushes, etc., which grow in the spring to leave the roads comfortably passable on foot.
- Remove stones from the road: pick up stones that have fallen on the road and set them aside in an orderly manner at the edges to make the passage passable.
- Rebuild the simplest sections of dry stone wall: rebuild those walls that have fallen and are easily rebuildable.
- Improved signage with paint: review the tracking marks of the paths with paint according to the instructions given to us by the "Alt Pirineu" Natural Park.
- Improved paved sections: some trails have cobbled sections that have worn out; redo these sections in order to maintain the cobbled areas.

Accomodation and food

The accommodation is in a terrain called "La Solana”, near the village of Vilamur.
It's a camping area in the middle of nature, so you should definitely be eager to have a (somehow) wild experience!
Volunteers will spend their days at a campsite, and they will camp and sleep in tents; usually there are 3-4 participants per tent and no separation by gender.
Tents are basic; mainly, there’s only space for sleeping or lying down. Tents will be provided by the organization, and volunteers will sleep on a mattress on the floor. Participants must bring their own sleeping bag (it’s highly recommended to bring a good one, as in the Pyrenees it can be cold at night even in summer) and mattress.
There is 1 dry toilet near the campsite and 1 shower available in the camp with COLD WATER (we strongly recommend bringing eco- and biodegradable shower gel or shampoo). There is no hot water in the camp. No gender separation for showers in the river; previous agreements will be done with the group.
The volunteers are in charge of cooking and keeping the area clean and safe: they will be split into groups, each group will prepare the food for one day, and they will be rotating every day, so they will be camping in the field and cooking by themselves.
In general, lunch and dinner will be warm meals, but exceptions can be made in case of a trekking route or spending the whole day out of the campsite.
There’s no Wi-Fi at the campsite. However, there's a mobile phone signal in the area, so you should be able to connect to 4G almost everywhere.
IMPORTANT: There is no electricity to charge phones in the terrain, but there is the possibility to charge the phones in the village of Vilamur.

Location and leisure

The workcamp is done in a calm and peaceful area of the Catalan Pyrenees called “Vall de Siarb”.
This place is located inside one of the natural Park in Catalonia (Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu) and the village belongs to Soriguera municipality.
For more information about this part of the Pyrenees, you can visit the website http://parcsnaturals.gencat.cat/en/alt-pirineu/index.html
Some leisure activities:
- Talk by the members of the Parc de l'Alt Pirineu about the trails and paths and the biodiversity of the Park.
- Visit to the bunkers: visit to the Civil War bunkers in the Coll de Sant Joan, about 4 km from the camp. The context of the Civil War and the specific situation of Pallars Sobirà and the Vall de Siarb will be explained.
- Visit to the Despoblat de Santa Creu de Llagunes: guided visit to the medieval Despoblat where we can see the strategic location of the town, its function during the medieval period and why the wall, the watchtowers.
- Thematic tour of the mills: circular itinerary of the mills, where you can see the remains of two flour mills and a hydroelectric power plant that supplied electricity to several villages in the Vall de Siarb.
- Itinerary of Tornafort: circular excursion that will allow us to get to know the paths of the surroundings visiting the picturesque town of Tornafort.
- Vilamur itinerary: circular excursion that will take us from the land to the village of Vilamur, then towards Soriguera, and following the river we will return to the camp.
- Orientation activity: the group will be divided into different teams and based on a series of clues related to the environment they will have to decipher an enigma or map. This dynamic enhances group cohesion and organization, agility and skills.

Project hosted by

The organization in charge of the work camp is "Balmes Blancs", a non-profit association created in 2010 with the aim of offering unique activities in nature with the aim of presenting new places and new people and deepening, thus, the knowledge of the Catalan territory.
Since its inception, it has organized various activities such as snowshoe outings with animal footprints, astronomical discoveries, kayak outings to discover marine fauna, rafting drops, hiking in the mountains, or leveling and safety workshops, among others.
In 2013 the association began working in the Siarb Valley. From that moment on, Balmes Blancs began to focus its activities around this valley and, among other things, guided visits to the "Despoblat de Santa Creu" de Llagunes, visits to the trenches on the Pallars front and to the Vilamur bunkers, discoveries of geology, and activities of flora and fauna in the environment.
At the same time, the refuge promotes hiking with the creation of signposted routes around Llagunes, as well as a series of actions aimed at recovering the heritage of the Siarb Valley and discovering rural life in Pallars Sobirà and in the rest of the Pyrenees.

Directions to meeting point

The meeting point will be on the 29th of June in the bus station of La Pobla de Segur at 18:30h.
From there, the hosting organization will take you to Vilamur by private bus (which will cost 6 euros per person, so please bring some cash with you).
. By public transportation: From Barcelona’s Airport, volunteers have to go to the bus station in Barcelona called Estació del Nord.
They can go by train: go to Terminal 2 and take the RENFE train R2Nord and stop in Estació de Sants. Once there, transfer to RENFE train R1 and stop in Arc de Triomf.
Or by metro: From terminal 1 or 2, take metro L9 to Torrassa, and there transfer to L1 and stop in Arc de Triomf. From the metro exit, walk 200m to the bus station.
From Estació del Nord to La Pobla de Segur, volunteers should get the ALSA bus (www.alsa.es).
IMPORTANT: Make sure you get to Barcelona on time! The ONLY choice to get on time at the meeting point is to take the bus to La Pobla de Segur at 14.30h.
. Private transportation: The meeting point will be directly in Vilamur around 19:15, and a person from Balmes Blancs will pick you up and show you how to get to the camping area.
Location: https://goo.gl/maps/UK2ntLBfazCnLdpc9
For more directions, you can now contact directly the hosting organization, Balmes Blancs, at marc.cortina@balmesblancs.com
LAST DAY OF THE CAMP: The best option is to go back to Barcelona by bus from La Pobla de Segur. The hosting organization will take you from Vilamur to La Pobla de Segur very early in the morning by a private bus (which will cost another 6 euros per person, so please bring some cash with you).
From La Pobla de Segur, there is one bus at 8:45h in the morning, which will allow you to transfer on time to the airport or train/bus station in Barcelona. Be aware that the travel time is around 4h.

Work

"Escoleta Penáguila: Kids, English and Elders" is a community-centered initiative where a team of 6–7 international volunteers will actively support the rural municipality of Penáguila by bridging different generations.

During the mornings, the main responsibility of the volunteer team will be running the local summer school (Escoleta) for approximately 15 local children. In this shift, volunteers will design and implement non-formal educational activities, interactive games, sports, and creative workshops entirely in English to promote language acquisition and intercultural awareness in a fun environment.

During some afternoons, the project focuses on social inclusion and intergenerational solidarity through visits to the local elderly care home. In these sessions, the team will provide companionship, facilitate soft-mobility dynamics, and organize shared activities to connect the youth with the senior residents of the village.

Additionally, as this is a rural community project, participants must maintain a highly flexible attitude and be fully open to helping with any other community support tasks that may arise. This includes collaborating with the local town hall, supporting small municipal events, or assisting in environmental and logistical activities to improve the well-being of Penáguila and its inhabitants.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay in a basic apartment with bunk beds, a kitchen, and bathrooms. The apartment also has free access to the local pool for relaxing during free time.

Food will be provided by De Amicitia. Volunteers will have the opportunity to cook together with the campleaders, creating meals as a team.

Location and leisure

Tucked away in the heart of the Alicante mountains, Penàguila is a small but enchanting village that offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and tranquility. Surrounded by olive trees, almond groves, and pine forests, it provides an ideal setting for volunteers looking to disconnect from the fast-paced city life and immerse themselves in authentic rural Spain.

Penàguila is known for its rich historical heritage, featuring a charming old town with narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and remnants of medieval walls. It’s a peaceful and welcoming community where locals live at a slower pace, and nature is just a few steps away.

One of the highlights of the village is the Jardín de Santos, a 19th-century botanical garden that once flourished with exotic species and romantic pathways. Although partially damaged by a recent fire, it remains a symbol of local pride and will be the focus of restoration during the volunteer project.

For leisure, volunteers can enjoy:

Nature walks and hiking through the Phytoclimatic Route, which connects the village to the botanical garden and offers stunning views of the surrounding valley.

Cultural visits to the local museum, which showcases the village's agricultural and historical past.

A trip to the nearby Safari Aitana, a drive-through animal park with giraffes, elephants, and lions.

Weekly intergenerational visits to the local senior center, promoting cultural exchange and community bonding.

Volunteers will find Penàguila to be a place where they can connect with nature, engage with the local community, and contribute to a meaningful environmental project—all while enjoying the serene beauty and simple joys of rural Mediterranean life.

Project hosted by

Penáguila's Town Hall

Work

The work will be environmental and will consist of maintenance work on the island, fire surveillance, information work and visitor awareness, and specific interventions to improve the park in collaboration with the environmental service workers. Cleaning of the South Island (the only island not communicated by passenger boat). (This activity depends on the park, it cannot be carried out in all shifts).

Accomodation and food

The volunteers will stay in tents, which have canvas-based bunks for resting. The facility has barracks for dining and showers. There is no washing machine (hand wash).

Location and leisure

This work camp is located on the Illas Cíes, specifically on the Island of Monteagudo (north) at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, in the municipality of Vigo (Pontevedra).

The Cíes Islands form part, together with the Cortegada, Sálvora and Ons archipelagos, of the Galician Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park.

The ecological value of its marine environment is incalculable since within its waters some of the most representative examples of Atlantic marine ecosystems are preserved, which treasure great biological wealth.

The marine environment of the Park is a great mosaic of different habitats that support an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna. There are important communities such as brown algae forests (Saccorhiza polyschides and Laminaria spp.), or those associated with seabeds such as those of Mäerl, and we also find habitats defined as of community or priority interest within the Habitats Directive of the European Union, such as reefs, lagoons or shallow sandbanks permanently covered with seawater.

The terrestrial environment is strongly influenced by the proximity of the ocean, highlighting the dune systems, the cliffs and the gorse or heather thickets.

Also in the emerged part of the islands we find habitats considered to be of community interest or priority by the directives, such as the gray dunes, the aerohaline coastal scrub or the southern Atlantic humid heather scrub.

The main problem for conservation in this environment has been human pressure. Especially in the Cíes Islands, eucalyptus, pine or acacia plantations have displaced the native vegetation in several areas. The eradication of these native species is a very long-term process that is already being worked on and the results of which will be seen gradually.

Actions are currently being carried out to develop adequate management of public use, waste from the islands, navigation and anchoring of boats, fishing, shellfishing, etc.

Sport fishing and underwater fishing are prohibited within the limits of the National Park.

COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES:
• Sport activities.
• Diving.
• Group dynamics.
• Guided routes.
• Workshops.
• Theme evenings.
• Environmental activities.

Valencia Airport (VLC) Participants will be picked up by a private transport service (Altaba company) reserved by De Amicitia. The shuttle will go directly from Valencia Airport to Xodos, taking approximately 2 hours. It is crucial to arrive on time, as this is a specific private service and there is no other way to reach Xodos. Please ensure you are at the meeting point well in advance to avoid missing the transport.

Work

In the "All Hands on Deck" project in Xodos, young volunteers will become a driving force for the local community through a diverse and dynamic work program. A fundamental part of the workcamp consists of rotating shifts where participants act as essential support for the local Summer School (Escoleta d'Estiu), which hosts around 20 to 25 children from the village and surrounding areas. Here, the teenagers will prepare games and lead multicultural activities, fostering international exchange from an early age. Additionally, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn the "dry stone" technique (a UNESCO World Heritage skill) from a specialist. This ancestral method involves building structures by carefully stacking stones without using any mortar or cement, relying solely on balance and gravity. Finally, the group will carry out basic maintenance tasks to improve the village, such as painting, restoring fences, and creating artistic murals. It is a comprehensive experience that combines social action, the preservation of historical heritage, and the enhancement of public spaces in a stunning natural environment.

Accomodation and food

Participants will be hosted in a house in the village with basic living conditions. The facilities include two bathrooms with showers, a washing machine, and a complete kitchen. Sleeping arrangements consist of several shared rooms equipped with sleeping mats. Additionally, the house features a multipurpose hall for group activities and relaxation.

Regarding food, participants will have the opportunity to cook in groups on a rotating basis, under the guidance of the De Amicitia campleaders. This is a central part of the community experience, allowing everyone to share international recipes and work as a team.

Location and leisure

Xodos is a hidden treasure tucked away in the interior of the province of Castellón, a picturesque village perched on a rocky cliff at an altitude of 1,070 meters. With only 107 inhabitants, this medieval town preserves an authentic charm and absolute tranquility, where life moves at a peaceful pace through its narrow, cobblestone streets. Known as "the balcony of the Maestrat," its skyline is dominated by the remains of its ancient castle and the Church of San Pedro.

Located at the foot of the imposing Penyagolosa Massif, Xodos serves as the perfect gateway for nature lovers. The surroundings are defined by deep ravines and dense forests, offering an ideal refuge with a cool summer climate. It is the perfect place for a total disconnection experience, where the small local community welcomes visitors to a setting where time seems to have stood still.

Project hosted by

De Amicitia is an international NGO dedicated to promoting environmental protection and social inclusion through voluntary service. This project is particularly special as it marks the first collaboration between De Amicitia and the Town Hall of Xodos. Together, they aim to revitalize this rural community by connecting international volunteers with local heritage and needs, fostering a unique intercultural exchange in this pioneering initiative.

Directions to meeting point

Arrival Date: July 2nd, 2026.

Meeting Time: 18:00 (6:00 PM) CET Time. Please ensure you are at the meeting point with plenty of time to spare to avoid missing the transport.

For the return journey, please ensure your flight departs from noon (12:00 PM) onwards. The group will be transported back from Xodos to Valencia Airport in the morning, and booking a flight later in the day will allow enough time for the mountain commute and check-in procedures.

Additional comments

Please note that Xodos is a tiny, remote village of only 107 inhabitants. It is not for those seeking the atmosphere of a big city. Due to its mountain location, reaching Xodos is complicated and public transport is limited. This project is perfect for volunteers who wish to disconnect and enjoy a quiet, authentic rural environment while bonding with the local community and the rest of the international group.

Requirements

Please note that national participants are eligible for a 12/14% discount on the participation fee. If you are applying from Spain, make sure to check the specific conditions for this reduction during the registration process.

Work

Beyond the vineyard: the dry stone heritage workcamp is a camp based on dry stone works, which were declared cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Participants are going to recover a huge stone wall in a vineyard area and also a shepherd's stone hut. They are also going to work in a Civil War trench area in order to make them more accessible to visitors.
Subirats is a rural area with little towns and villages, so the impact is quite big. Participants will have the support of experts from CESUB Subirat's historical study group, and will meet local people to collaborate in the conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the area. The working hours will be in the mornings from 8:00 to 13:00 from Monday to Friday. There would be a break in the middle of the morning to rest and have a snack. However, depending on weather conditions, the schedule can be modified. Weekends and off-work hours are organized for visits and self-managed activities.
The technical tasks will be:
- Restoration and maintenance of the dry stone margins between the cores of Ordal and Saint Paul of Ordal. -Restoration and maintenance of the remnants of trenches from the Civil War that are in the same area.
- Restoration of a shepherd's hut located near the Archaeological area of Subirats.
- Location of dry stone constructions using the Wikipedra portal.
-Maintenance Tasks in Saint Paul's Ordal (maintenance of public banks and children's park)
- Build and place nest boxes.
The rest of the time will be for leisure, swimming pool, and other activities, and weekends will be organized for visits and other activities.

Accomodation and food

The participants of the workcamp will be installed in “ZER Montcau”, a multifunctional space of a school in the center of L’Ordal.
There is a large patio, toilets, indoor showers, a kitchen, and a large room where they will sleep. Volunteers will sleep indoors in bunk beds, all together with no gender separation. Volunteers need to bring a thin sleeping bag, pillow, and bed linen.
Volunteers will also have the pool near the school, and because the area has high temperatures in summer, bring cotton and fresh clothes.
The hosting organization highly recommends long-sleeve shirts and t-shirts for working hours and a hat to protect themselves from the sun, and the volunteers will have the chance to go to the pool near the accommodation.
There will be catering providing the food for the volunteers, and snacks and fruit will be provided during breaks. There are vegetarian/vegan options, also other cultural reasons, and any allergy options.

Location and leisure

The privileged geographical situation, a plain protected by mountains by the sea, the mild climate of the Mediterranean coast, and a permeable land, rich in phosphorus, make the region of El Penedès the main producer of wines and cavas in Catalonia. This wine history goes back to at least the 4th century B.C.
The vineyard structures are thus a distinctive cultural feature of the area, and they have been refined over time. The Subirats area, halfway between the Vilafranca plain and the Ordal mountains, has steeper terrain than the rest of the region. That is why, in this area, the structure of dry stone walls and constructions, which are necessary for leveling the ground and plotting the vineyards, is quite important.
Free time and leisure activities will include group games, workshops, and cultural activities to learn more about Catalan culture and the vineyard tradition in the area. Participants will visit cultural and historical areas and museums in Subirats, a wine and champagne factory, and also Vilafranca del Penedès, the Catalan’s wine capital. They will also visit the city of Barcelona, which is only 45km away from the accommodation area, and will participate in the rehearsals of a group of “castellers”, learning how Catalan human towers are made.

Work

Each morning, you will lead 4-hour workshops for children at the nursery focusing on environmental awareness, digital detox, cooperation, and cultural respect, while afternoons are dedicated to preparing the following day's activities. The participants range from 3 to 17 years old, although the majority are usually between 3 and 6, and these workshops culminate in a community theatre performance about environmental protection, such as forest fire prevention or any other green theme chosen by the team, using recycled crafts created during the week as scenery. As local English levels are generally low, volunteers are encouraged to inspire the children through language, and those who speak Spanish are asked to use it to connect with the community, taking the initiative to foster a "culture of peace" and a great atmosphere in Jódar.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay at the municipal nursery. Living conditions are basic: please bring a sleeping bag (mats provided, but check availability first). The center includes toilets, showers, a washing machine, and free access to the municipal pool.

Meals: Usually, volunteers cook their own meals. However, we hope to have a professional chef for lunch again this year!
Note: To promote sustainability, the group will have one "Vegan Day" during the project.

Location and leisure

Jódar is a village located close to Jaén. The main economic activity is agriculture and it is surrounded by the Natural Park of Sierra Magina which is a natural area with the high-quality landscape, pure and nearly virgin. Volunteers will have excellent possibilities to visit Cordoba/Granada or Seville and other spots like Jaén (Arabic baths and cathedral), Ubeda and Baeza. There is also a chance of doing a hiking route through the Serrezuela and the Sierra Magina and even to have a parapente experience in Pegalajar.

In a workcamp we also dedicate some time to a study part. It is an activity of non-formal learning, where you can gain new knowledge or form new opinions on different problems; all this is done in a relaxed and entertaining way.
The intercultural evening is a good way of intercultural learning. In every camp there is one evening, when all participants present their country in a relaxed way, making presentation, watching photos, telling stories, tasting typical dishes, drinks and sweets, dances etc. Please, have this evening in your mind while preparing your luggage to share a piece of your culture with the rest of volunteers.
The volunteers will have access to the local swimming pool of the town and will be able to enjoy their free times in the poolside.
As the local transportation is not very well connected, it is not easy to organize some trips to the big cities but depending on the volunteers, it could be possible to organize some trips to Málaga, Sevilla or Granada in the weekends. Keep in mind that De Amicitia is not financing your leisure time activities.

Project hosted by

Guardabosques and De Amicitia works in collaboration in order to support Summer Camps with various English workshops.
This camp is a part of the project "European Youth in Action: policymakers for climate justice", co-funded by the Citizens, Equality. Rights and Values (CERV) programme of the European Commission. "EYA - European Youth in Action" aims at empowering European youth to make their voices heard by the decision makers on climate justice issues, through building of a structured path at European level for the engagement of youth. The project engages young people in expressing their vision on the Europe they want and on climate justice; increase knowledge and awareness on climate justice issues, improve competences in concrete actions for climate justice in three key related issues: energy transition, greenwashing, biodiversity.

Work

The general objective of the workcamp is to show the environmental reality of a territory and how to intervene in it by:
1. Contributing to the improvement and conservation of the Natural Area of Sils wetlands.
2. Knowing the biodiversity and the characteristic habitats of these humid zones
3. Knowing the land stewardship, the actors in the territory that participate and good practices.
4. Transmitting values of cooperation and respect towards the environment and its inhabitants.
5. Offering a space for exchange and discovery of the different realities of the participants, mainly in environmental issues and for the conservation and management of natural spaces.
6. Encouraging responsible consumption in every way. On the one hand, as an important measure for our environment; on the other hand, in the use of new technologies and other aspects related to the care of oneself and the community.
7. Promoting participants to become diffusers.
8. Showing Catalan culture through vividness and networking.
The volunteers will work 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday, and the rest of the day there will be environmental education workshops, games, swimming pool and leisure time. The local population will not participate in the actions but they will participate in the leisure activities such as traditional dances, the astronomy workshop, etc.

Accomodation and food

The accommodation for the workcamp will be located at the Cultural Centre of La Laguna, known as the Sala Cultural de La Laguna.
La Laguna is a vibrant cultural space with several multifunctional areas. On the ground floor, there is a large entrance hall that serves both as the main entrance and as an activity space due to its size. Nearby, there are separate toilets and showers for different genders. Next to this area is a large hall where all volunteers will sleep together in a shared sleeping space.
The main hall, usually used for cultural activities such as theatre performances and dance events, will serve as the sleeping and resting area for participants during the workcamp.
Upstairs, there are two additional spaces: “El Galliner” (a smaller upper-level room) and a large corridor that is sometimes used for activities. The building also includes two offices and a storage and cleaning room. The centre is equipped with a basic kitchen. As far as possible, food products will be organic.
The menu will be balanced and prepared daily using fresh products, ensuring all necessary nutrients while respecting environmental sustainability. Fish consumption is minimal and meat consumption is limited, meaning meat will not be served every day.
The hosting organisation welcomes vegetarian and vegan participants and takes food allergies and intolerances into consideration. Participants who are vegetarian, vegan, or have any allergies or intolerances must indicate this during registration so that alternative menu options can be arranged.
There will be five meals per day: early breakfast, a mid-morning fruit/snack break, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner.
Participants will be organised into small groups and will cook on a rotating basis. The kitchen is basic but fully functional and includes a microwave. Participants are kindly asked not to use the kitchen outside the established meal times.
The dining area is equipped with tables and benches. We also hope to access the local swimming pool and, exceptionally, use the showers there if needed.
The venue has Wi-Fi and electricity. There is no washing machine or dryer; therefore, participants will need to wash their clothes by hand and hang them to dry upstairs.

Location and leisure

Sils Lake is a protected natural area included in the Plan of Spaces of Natural Interest (PEIN) of Catalonia. It is part of the European Network of Natural Spaces Natura 2000, which is at the core of European biodiversity policies. In recent centuries, areas of natural flooding have receded, and today they are scarce in Catalonia.
In the Mediterranean context, the conservation of spaces such as the Sils Lake has become of the highest interest. Due to its special humidity and flood conditions, several species of flora and fauna characteristic of wetlands are still preserved in this area.
Sils will be your accommodation town in your stage in Catalunya. Sils is a municipality and town of the “comarca de la Selva”. It is located at the bottom of the “comarca” plain, and its southern third was occupied until the mid-nineteenth century by the lake of Sils, which we will restore. The town has 6,093 citizens, and it’s located near Girona, Lloret de Mar, or Sta. Coloma de Farners.
Lake Sils is a protected natural area in accordance with the legislation of the Generalitat de Catalunya and has been proposed to be included in the European Natura 2000 network. It is the remains of a lagoon that was drained in the past in order to obtain new farmland and fight malaria. However, thanks to the conditions of special humidity and the annual floods, species of flora and fauna characteristic of the humid zones are still conserved. In recent centuries, areas of natural flooding in Catalonia have suffered a major recession and are currently scarce in Catalonia. On the other hand, in a predominantly Mediterranean context, the conservation of natural spaces such as the Sils lake is one of the most interesting.

There will be leisure activities every day, and some days some excursions. Here is an attached list of the main activities that will be done:
• Knowledge activities
• Group cohesion dynamics
• Self-management activities: "Do it together"
• Excursion to Can Moragues, headquarters of Fundació Emys. A country house, situated in Riudarenes, next to Sils.
• Excursion to Girona
• Excursion to Costa Brava town
• Excursion to Farners Castle

Project hosted by

Emys Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of nature, especially wetlands and the terrapin Emys orbicularis, which gives the name to the Foundation. Born in 2003, the Emys Foundation is located close to Riudarenes on a country farm called Can Moragues. Emys orbicularis is the native terrapin of Catalunya, North Africa, and most parts of Europe. In 1987 a group of young people discovered through a talk that in his region there was an endangered terrapin, the Emys orbicularis. They decided to do something to help that species. Those people started doing custody agreements with local territory owners to protect ponds, streams, and lakes. And this is how the Emys Foundation starts. Actually, Emys orbicularis is still endangered because of the destruction of the habitat, exotic species, and water contamination. In the Selva region, we found the best-preserved population in Catalonia, with more than 500 animals. The organization works with a conciliatory view, where the challenge is involving the owners, managers, and users of the territory in the natural heritage values, its sustainable management, and its long-term conservation. All this is done by voluntary work, land stewardship, research, conservation, education, and consciousness-raising. The organization has been groundbreaking in the field of amphibians and reptiles and has been awarded on different occasions. The research projects made by the Emys Foundation receive advice from investigation groups of different universities (University of Barcelona, University Autonoma of Barcelona, University of Girona, and also the Aranzadi Science Society). The technicians of the Emys Foundation are also university investigators and take part actively in the writing and publication of scientific articles, congress executions, and technical conferences. All the information collected in the research projects of the Foundation is used to evaluate and improve our methods of natural environmental management.

Directions to meeting point

The meeting point will be on August 1st at 16:00h at Sils train station. The workcamp leaders will be waiting for the volunteers there. The train station is located only 100 meters from the accommodation.
To reach Sils by public transport:
By train: To reach Sils train station, take the R11 regional train line from Estació de Sants in Barcelona, which connects Barcelona, Granollers, Girona, Figueres, and Portbou.
Sils train station is served by the R11 line, offering convenient connections from major cities in the region.
By car: From Girona, take the N-II road. Follow the signs and take the exit towards G-155, heading to Mallorquines. From there, take the C-63 towards Sils. From Barcelona, take the C-33 motorway and then join the AP-7. Continue on the AP-7 until exits 9A–9B in the direction of Palamós. Then continue on the C-35. Follow the N-II and then the C-63, and finally take Carrer de l’Estany to Plaça de l’Estació in Sils.
LAST DAY OF THE CAMP: The workcamp will finish after breakfast at 9:00h, and volunteers can leave to take the train back to Barcelona, but for more information, feel free to contact EMYS directly.

Work

This cultural volunteer camp will support the organization of a Festival of National Tourist Interest, the "Festa da Istoria", which highlights the cultural nature of the festival.
In this cultural celebration, history provides an insight into trades that are now in decline or forgotten, such as blacksmiths, carpenters, coopers, stonemasons, basket makers, and a long list of popular artisan traditions that have greatly influenced the economic history of Galicia, not to mention the importance of Ribeiro wine.
The work to be carried out can be classified into two areas:
A) Preparation of the ornamental elements for the "Festa da Istoria" decoration, focusing on the restoration of outdated or deteriorated materials, as well as the expansion of resources as requested.
B) Development of tourist resources to revitalize the town of Ribadavia beyond the "Festa da Istoria." A live role-playing event will be designed, in which the volunteers from the volunteer camp will design a story that they will then act out, interacting directly with local participants who join the activity.

Please note: This work camp does not coincide with the "Festa da Istoria," which will take place a few weeks after the camp ends. The activities are focused on the preparatory phase of the festival.

Work

“Among vineyards and dry stone walls” is a camp based on dry stone works, which were declared cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Participants are going to recover stone walls in the vineyard area and also a shepherd's stone hut. They are also going to work on adapting local roads and trails in order to make them more accessible to visitors. The place is a rural area with little towns and villages, so the impact is quite big.
Participants will have the support of experts from local entities, and will meet local people to collaborate in the conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the area. They will also be part of the Festival Música Clàssica Pedra Viva Molins, a local classical music festival held annually in the municipality. The working hours will be in the mornings from 8:00 to 13:00 from Monday to Friday, but there will be some exceptions for the music festival. Volunteers will have a break in the middle of the morning to rest and have a snack. However, depending on weather conditions, the schedule can be modified.
The technical tasks are:
- Restoration and maintenance of the dry stone margins between vineyards and paths.
- Restoration of shepherd's huts.
- Support for the current grazing area for rescued horses by the association Forest Horses.
- Arrangement of waterers, maintenance of fences
- Clearing, cleaning, and adaptation of local roads and trails
-Participation in the maintenance tasks of the municipality's public space.
- Improvement and maintenance work at the Hospital de Cervelló and its surrounding area.
- Restoration and improvement works on the historic Camí Ral (Royal Road) that passes through this medieval complex, as well as maintenance of traditional dry-stone huts and stone boundary walls located within the municipal area.
The rest of the time will be for leisure, to go to the swimming pool and participate in other leisure activities.

Accomodation and food

Participants will stay at a Civic Center located in the town centre, next to the City Hall. The accommodation includes a large shared sleeping room with bunk beds, indoor shared toilets and showers, a recreation room, and an outdoor porch.
All volunteers will sleep indoors in the same shared room, with no gender separation. Participants must bring a thin sleeping bag, a pillow, and their own bed linen.
The hosting organisation strongly recommends bringing long-sleeved shirts and T-shirts for working hours, as well as a hat for sun protection. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to go to the swimming pool located near the accommodation.
Meals will be provided by a catering service. Snacks and fresh fruit will be available during breaks. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, as well as alternatives for cultural dietary requirements and food allergies. Participants should inform the organisation in advance of any specific dietary needs.
At the accommodation, volunteers will also have access to a small area equipped with a sink, refrigerators, a coffee machine, and a microwave.

The area, halfway between the Vilafranca plain and the Ordal mountains, has steeper terrain than the rest of the region. That is why, in this area, the structure of dry stone walls and constructions, which are necessary for leveling the ground and plotting the vineyards, is quite important.
Free time and leisure activities will include group games, workshops, and cultural activities to learn more about Catalan culture and the vineyard tradition in the area.
Participants will visit cultural and historical areas and museums, a wine and champagne factory, and also Vilafranca del Penedès, the Catalan wine capital, and will participate in the rehearsals of a group of “castellers”, learning how Catalan human towers are made.
The volunteers will also participate in the Pedra Viva Molins Classical Music Festival which will take place on the 7th and 8th of August at the site of the Hospital de Cervelló.
The festival location, where the young participants will be actively involved, forms part of this historic complex, which is officially recognised as a National Cultural Heritage Site (BCIN – Bé d’Interès Nacional).
The Hospital de Cervelló was founded in 1262 by Guillem de Cervelló, within the territory of the parish of Sant Joan d'Olesa. It was established to provide shelter and assistance to travellers and pilgrims journeying along the old royal road from Barcelona to Vilafranca del Penedès, passing through Sant Boi and Olesa de Bonesvalls — the historic Camí Ral.

Work

The main theme of this workcamp is heritage and archaeology. The tasks to be carried out will include excavation, clearing of undergrowth (brushwood), removal of roots and timber, and site sanitation. Additionally, participants will immerse themselves in the local community through active participation in the Romería de San Lourenzo, which takes place at the hillfort (castro) on August 10th.
The participants' work will contribute to a better understanding of the site. The activities will revolve around two main axes: excavation under technical supervision of the hillfort's wall area (3rd–2nd centuries BCE) and the excavation of existing graves in the medieval necropolis (9th–12th centuries CE).
Ensuring that participants understand the importance of their work—both at an archaeological level and in terms of its significance for the local community—is a priority for this project. Therefore, throughout the activities, a strong emphasis will be placed on archaeological methodology, while fostering meaningful interaction with the local community as a cross-cutting theme.

Accomodation and food

The accommodation of the participants will be in the municipal hostel. Address: Av. de Outeiro, 37. 27331 A Pobra de Brollón - Lugo
