The office community Schottengasse, in Vienna 1st district has existed for decades, providing critical initiatives and associations with working spaces and infrastructure. The community is composed of different social realities and associations involved in different fields, embracing solidarity actions and critical approaches to promote a system change and tackle social challenges. The activity intends to bring a group of international volunteers together with other young immigrants living in Austria to offer their solidarity to the community and learn together about the topics of integration, youth engagement, solidarity and volunteering. At the same time we aim to redirect the attention of the local community to such topics and relaunch the general support of the work done in the office.

Additional comments

This Project is founded by the European Solidarity Corps. Therefore all travel costs will be reimbursed after the workcamp. Food and accommodation are included and pocket money will also be provided to participants during the camp.

Work

You will work together with the “LEiV” (Verein Lebende Erde) which is a landscape protector group in the European NATURA2000-site “Teile des Südoststeirischen Hügellandes”. You will work on the meadows to collect the hay and in the woodlands to clean them from neophytes. The core idea is to assist the organisation with the traditional art of work that aims to preserve the area and its wildlife.

You will also help at the European-Roller Festival (a protected bird from the region). Moreover, you will have excursions to the wonderful protected species living on the side and visit the Mur-river for rafting.

Accomodation and food

Food: You will cook for the group in team. Please inform us whether you require a special diet. Your accommodation and food are covered – however, we recommend you to bring some pocket money. The currency used in Austria is euro. Furthermore, we invite you to bring typical food, spices, drinks, games and music from your country (for an intercultural evening) – and a lot of motivation!
Accomodation:The local partner will host the volunteers in a school. The volunteers will sleep on the floor, mattress will be provided.

Project hosted by

Grenzenlos is an Austrian NGO based in Vienna. It is independent of religions and political bodies. Grenzenlos is a non-profit association. Its main purpose is to promote world peace and respect between people through intercultural non-formal education programmes abroad which combine cultural integration with engagement at non-profit initiatives worldwide.

The German word „Grenzenlos” means “no boundaries” and also “no limits”. The word explains the basic mission of Grenzenlos: to promote the personal development of individuals (no limits!) and inter-cultural understanding through international encounters, trainings, inter-cultural living and work experience (no boundaries!).

Grenzenlos offers a variety of international mobility programmes. These programmes are dedicated to world peace through the promotion of intercultural exchanges.

• Traditionally, Grenzenlos organizes volunteering programmes (individual as well as in the frame of international camps).
• As an exchange organization, we send volunteers abroad and host volunteers in Austria
• For people of all generations from 18 to 99 years.
• Including stays from two weeks up to one year
• For skilled as well as for non-skilled people
• Worldwide

The Inclusion approach is a high priority for Grenzenlos: special attention is given to promoting the participation of people with disabilities in all our volunteering projects as well as trainings and educational programmes.

Work

International and local volunteers will help mowing steep meadows and remove bushes from dry rocky grasslands that are threatened to be overgrown by bushes and trees. So they will contribute actively to preserve endangered species. Work will be physical (mowing, raking, cutting bushes) and will last for about 5 - 6 hours every day.

Accomodation and food

During the workcamp we will change two different accommodations. Both accommodations will be very basic. First week we will sleep in tents, whereas second week we will have simple shared group accommodation. In the first week of the camp we will stay in Hart-Aschendorf during which we will sleep in the tents. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that you bring the tent with you as well as your own sleeping bag, sleeping mat and a pillow! During the second week we will stay at the campsite of Poysdorf (http://www.vinoversum.at/poysdorf/campingplatz/).

Location and leisure

Hart-Aschendorf and Poysdorf are both small villages located in the very northeast of Austria, close to the common border of Austria with the Czech Republic and Slovakia and close to the rivers Dyje and Morava, which form beautiful floodplains in the area. Brno (CZ) and Vienna (AT) are the closest bigger cities. Info in German: https://www.poysdorf.gv.at/Freizeit_Tourismus/Vino_Versum_Poysdorf_Tourismus/Tourismus

Project hosted by

The dry grasslands of the so-called “Weinviertler Klippenzone” in the European Green Belt along the border between Austria and Czech Republic are habitat of a lot of different rare plants and animal species. To maintain these habitats and to avoid invasion of bushes into the grasslands it is necessary to establish regular management. Biotope maintenance like mowing or removing bushes or neophytes will be implemented on rupicolous or steppic grasslands in protected areas - situated amidst a beautiful wine-growing landscape. This helps to preserve rare species like the critically endangered Feather Grass (Stipa tirsa) or the butterfly Mountain Alcon Blue (Phengaris rebeli)

Additional comments

This project is founded by European Solidarity Corps. Therefore, we can cover all essential costs of the program (including food, travel costs up to a maximum amount per country, visa costs, accommodation, pocket money). The travel is reimbursed after tickets submissions.
Naturschutzbund NÖ (Austrian League for Nature Conservation - Lower Austria) is an environmental NGO that supports and maintains protected areas in the region and that wants to contribute to conservation of species and ecosystems. The workcamp is organised together with the local municipalities Poysdorf, Staatz, Falkenstein, Drasenhofen, and Wildendürnbach. We work together with the management of the Natura 2000-Area that is supported by the administration of Lower Austria. http://www.noe-naturschutzbund.at/

Requirements

Participants should be motivated for physical work and be ready to work outdoors (warm and weatherproof clothes and working-boots as well as sunscreen are strongly recommended!).
