We will meet at the bus station Gesäuse Bachbrücke/Weidendom that can be reached by public bus from Vienna, Graz and other cities in Austria

Work

In both National Park Gesäuse & Nature Park Styrian Eisenwurzen we will remove invasive plants to prevent irreversible anthropogenic effects on sensitive ecosystems. We will also have time to get to know each other and enjoy the summer in the mountains.

Accomodation and food

You will be staying at two different locations. First week you will be situated in the pension Ödsteinblick, kind of a mountain refuge at the Johnsbach. You should bring a sleeping liner. There will be no supermarket or shopping facility around. You have to bring everything what you need for the first week with you. After one week you will be transported by a local shuttle to the NaturparkResort Almmauer, a comfortable, well equipped hut (dormitory, kitchen, bathroom, WiFi) located at Naturpark Eisenwurzen. Regular public transport is available. The next supermarket is within walking distance.

Location and leisure

The beautiful region of Gesäuse and Eisenwurzen offers a lot of possibilities for free-time activities. You can learn something about the history of the region, go hiking or swim in the Enns, the river next to the campsite.

Our activities in our leisure time depend also on you. Bring some games, playing cards, music instruments, creativity and funny ideas!

Requirements

We will have 17 activity days, 3 days off in between and the arrival and departure day. The work will be physical and in steep terrain. Therefore, some basic fitness as well as solid ankle-high hiking boots are required. Before you sign up for this camp, PLEASE make sure that you are healthy enough to participate. People with a strong bee allergy are not recommended to participate. Please send us the motivation letter and let us know the reason why you want to take part at the camp.

Work

We will spend 5 hours a day doing physical work. We will removemainly two plants (Himalayan balsam, Canada goldenrod) from a small valley in the village by cutting the plants and gathering them in piles.

Accomodation and food

Living conditions are very simple. We will sleep on emergency matresses in a school. Hot showers, electricity and internet are available at the accommodation. Please bring a sleeping bag for yourself. We will cook food ourselves. All food will be vegan, as animal agriculture massively contributes to our global environmental crisis.

Requirements

Since this is an environmental project, we would like volunteers to arrive via more sustainable means of transport (train, bus) rather than by plane. Planes contribute massively to the climate crisis.

We will meet at the Railstation Leobersdorf. There are trains to Leobersdorf leaving from Vienna (station Wien Meidling - most times in the direction “Wiener Neustadt” or “Payerbach-Reichenau”) every half an hour. From the Railstation Leobersdorf to Waldorf school you have to walk for about 20 minutes.

Work

Every summer a new part of the school building and the garden is renovated. This year the plan is to paint the classrooms, to do some gardening, wood work, other building and renovation tasks. No previous experience is required.

Apart from school renovation there will be a study part activities focused on environment, climate and sustainability. We will have group discussions, reflections, interactive games, videos and documentaries about this theme.

Accomodation and food

There will be a simple shared accommodation for the group. There are two sleeping rooms with mattresses - you need to bring your sleeping bags and pillows. Volunteers will plan the menu together and cook for themselves and the partner organisation will provide the food.

Location and leisure

At the school there is a lot of nature around and you will have the possibility to have a walk and relax in an old park. There's a beach volleyball field on the school ground. Sometimes there are events at the Waldorf school. In the evenings there is the possibility to have a campfire. On the weekends there is the possibility to visit Vienna, Baden or to have a tour to the mountains.

The activities in the free time depend on the volunteers :) !

Work

You will work together with the “LEiV” (Verein Lebende Erde) which is a landscape protector group in the European NATURA2000-site “Teile des Südoststeirischen Hügellandes”. You will work on the meadows to collect the hay and in the woodlands to clean them from neophytes. The core idea is to assist the organisation with the traditional art of work that aims to preserve the area and its wildlife. You will also help at the European-Roller Festival ( the European roller is a protected bird from the region).

Please keep on mind that you are going to work with your hands under the sun and that some hard work is expected! Also, be aware that the work will take place outdoor all the time, so the different weather conditions should not be a big problem for you (you should like to be outdoor most of the time).

Website of Verein „Lebende Erde im Vulkanland“ (in German): https://www.blauracke.at/

Accomodation and food

Accommodation: You will sleep all together in the same room (all genders mixed) on sport mattress in a sport house. There is a kitchen, showers, toilets, and Wifi in the accommodation, but no washing machine. However, there is the possibility to wash by hand in the accommodation.

Food: The food will be mostly vegetarian. You will cook for the group in team. Please inform us whether you require a special diet. Your accommodation and food are covered – however, we recommend you to bring some pocket money. The currency used in Austria is euro. Furthermore, we invite you to bring typical food, spices, drinks, games and music from your country (for an intercultural evening) – and a lot of motivation!

Location and leisure

During your free time, you will have excursions to the wonderful protected species living on the side and visit the Mur-river for rafting.

As integration with the community is a key element, you will have cultural interactions with the people in Straden and its surrounding.

Project hosted by

Grenzenlos is an Austrian NGO based in Vienna. It is independent of religions and political bodies. Grenzenlos is a non-profit association. Its main purpose is to promote world peace and respect between people through intercultural non-formal education programmes abroad which combine cultural integration with engagement at non-profit initiatives worldwide.

The German word „Grenzenlos“ means “no boundaries“ and also “no limits“. The word explains the basic mission of Grenzenlos: to promote the personal development of individuals (no limits!) and inter-cultural understanding through international encounters, trainings, inter-cultural living and work experience (no boundaries!).

Grenzenlos offers a variety of international mobility programmes. These programmes are dedicated to world peace through the promotion of intercultural exchanges.

Directions to meeting point

Meeting Point: 22nd of July at 2p.m. (14:00) in the main train station of Graz.

Additional comments

Things to bring: You need to bring with you a sleeping bag (you have mats in the house), working clothes, closed working shoes, raincoat, swimsuit, sun cream, sunglasses and a sun hat/cap. If you require any medications (e.g., because of an allergy), don’t forget to bring them with you.

You will work in nature and the natural habitat of ticks. There’s a small risk of tick-borne encephalitis. Make sure you protect yourself with repellent or a vaccination.

Requirements

Insurance: You need a full (medical) insurance for your travel and the time in Austria.

Specific Requirements:

  1. Because of the hard work-working conditions, this project is unfortunately not suitable for people with physical disabilities.
  2. We request the travel tickets at least 6 weeks before the project starts.

Hart-Aschendorf can be reached by public bus from Vienna (AT) the capital-city of Austria (approx. 1 hour travel time).

Work

International and local volunteers will help mowing steep meadows and remove bushes from dry rocky grasslands that are threatened to be overgrown by bushes and trees. So they will contribute actively to preserve endangered species. Work will be physical (mowing, raking, cutting bushes) and will last for about 5 - 6 hours every day.

Accomodation and food

During the workcamp we will change two different accommodations. Both accommodations will be very basic. First week we will sleep in tents, whereas second week we will have simple shared group accommodation. In the first week of the camp we will stay in Hart-Aschendorf during which we will sleep in the tents. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that you bring the tent with you as well as your own sleeping bag, sleeping mat and a pillow! During the second week we will stay at the campsite of Poysdorf (http://www.vinoversum.at/poysdorf/campingplatz/)

Location and leisure

The beautiful region of Lower Austria offers a lot of possibilities for free-time activities. You can learn something about wine-production.
