Work

During the project, you will work as a forest ranger in the National Park. Your work helps to protect nature and keep the park healthy.

The park has open landscapes and heathland. These areas need regular care so plants and animals can continue to live there. You will help remove unwanted plants by hand.
This work is careful and important, because machines cannot be used in these natural areas.
Other work will be in caring for animals.

You will also help restore a small site hut and support basic care for animals living on the property.

Accomodation and food

The accomodation is a stone building, located in the wood. There is a wooden building on the terrain for sleeping. It's an open room and SIW will provide a roomdivider for more privacy (m/f). We provide airbeds but volunteers need to bring a sleeping bag. A kitchen is available with all facilities. There is 1 indoor shower but SIW will place 2 outdoor (hotwater) showers. There are airbeds to sleep on, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. A kitchen is available with all facilities, including a washing machine. Volunteers will cook and clean together. There is a separate building for indoor activities and lots of outdoor space including BBQ possibilities.

Accomodation address:
Haus Wildenrath
Naturparkweg 2
41844 Wegberg
Germany

Location and leisure

De Meinweg is a beautiful national park bordering the Netherlands and Germany. The name was originally Celtic and means common lands. This history of sharing the land is still an important part of the area today.
Volunteers will plan your free time together as a group. Some activities are already planned and are connected to the history and culture of the area.
All activities are optional, and the group will decide together what to do.

Possible free time activities include:
A citytrip to Maastricht (The Netherlands)
A citytrip to Aachen (Germany)
Visit the caves in the area
Swimming in the Maasplassen
Visit a local festival

Project hosted by

The partner organization is Naturschutzstation Haus Wildenrath. It is part of Grenspark Maas-Swalm-Nette. Stations like these started from voluntary nature protection work. Today, they connect volunteers, professional nature experts, and local authorities. They work as associations and often cooperate with farmers, fishing and hunting groups, and environmental organizations.

The station works on nature protection and species protection. It also helps to protect cultural landscapes, for example by planting and taking care of traditional orchards. In addition, the organization supports regional development and soft tourism. FInally, the station is used as a place for nature and sustainability projects and helps people learn more about protecting the environment.
