Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

Volunteers will serve as a versatile workforce for Penáguila, executing a wide range of manual and social tasks based on the municipality’s real-time needs. This is a hands-on project focused on the intensive maintenance of the town’s heritage, moving beyond symbolic actions to perform real labor. Tasks include the physical recovery of the fire-damaged Jardín de Santos and the Phytoclimatic Route through clearing, gardening, and technical replanting. Volunteers will also act as a maintenance crew for the Town Hall, repairing public furniture, restoring urban infrastructure, and executing large-scale artistic projects like mural painting to revitalize public spaces.

The project integrates this physical labor with essential community work, including weekly intergenerational sessions at the local senior center to foster cultural exchange. From preserving artifacts in the local museum to demanding manual restoration and urban cleaning, volunteers will be fully immersed in the town’s daily upkeep. This holistic approach requires adaptability and hard work, ensuring a tangible and lasting impact on both the landscape and the social fabric of Penáguila.

Alojamiento y comida

Volunteers will stay in a shared apartment for 12 people, equipped with 6 twin rooms, 2 kitchens, 2 bathrooms, and a washing machine. A bar/restaurant is located directly across from the house, and volunteers will have access to the municipal swimming pool.

Key Considerations:

Transportation & Isolation: Penàguila is a remote mountain village. The bus only runs once a day, making a car necessary for grocery shopping and essential errands.

Meals: Food is provided by De Amicitia. All meals are prepared collectively by the volunteers in organized cooking shifts managed by the campleader.

Leisure: Weekends are free.

Localización y ocio

Tucked away in the heart of the Alicante mountains, Penáguila is a small but enchanting village that offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and tranquility. Surrounded by olive trees, almond groves, and pine forests, it provides an ideal setting for volunteers looking to disconnect from the fast-paced city life and immerse themselves in authentic rural Spain. Penàguila is known for its rich historical heritage, featuring a charming old town with narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, and remnants of medieval walls. It’s a peaceful and welcoming community where locals live at a slower pace, and nature is just a few steps away. One of the highlights of the village is the Jardín de Santos, a 19th-century botanical garden that once flourished with exotic species and romantic pathways. Although partially damaged by a recent fire, it remains a symbol of local pride and will be the focus of restoration during the volunteer project. For leisure, volunteers can enjoy: Nature walks and hiking through the Phytoclimatic Route, which connects the village to the botanical garden and offers stunning views of the surrounding valley. Cultural visits to the local museum, which showcases the village's agricultural and historical past. A trip to the nearby Safari Aitana, a drive-through animal park with giraffes, elephants, and lions. Weekly intergenerational visits to the local senior center, promoting cultural exchange and community bonding. Volunteers will find Penàguila to be a place where they can connect with nature, engage with the local community, and contribute to a meaningful environmental project—all while enjoying the serene beauty and simple joys of rural Mediterranean life.

Eligibility : Candidates must be 18 to 30 years old and reside in one of the eligible countries. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months.

Motivated to Work in Nature and Restoration: As the project involves environmental and cultural restoration, volunteers should be interested in conservation, gardening, and learning about local history and culture.

Interest in Manual and Physical Work: Since the tasks include gardening, environmental clean-up, painting, and restoration work, volunteers should have a willingness and ability to engage in manual, hands-on tasks.

Creative and Community-Oriented: Volunteers will also assist with creative tasks like painting murals and other public space improvements, so creativity and an openness to working in teams are valuable.

Interest in Cultural Exchange: The project includes intergenerational activities, and volunteers should be open to interacting with the local senior community and engaging in cultural exchange with the rest of participants.

Flexibility and Adaptability: The project is based in a rural area, and volunteers should be ready to adapt to a different lifestyle and work in varying conditions.

Teamwork and Communication Skills: Since volunteers will work closely with others, they should have good teamwork and communication skills. English is often the common language for ESC projects, so basic English proficiency may be needed.

Open-Mindedness and Respect for Local Culture: Volunteers should be respectful of the local Spanish culture, and open to learning about the village’s traditions and history.

Responsibility: Volunteers will be expected to manage their personal tasks, cooperate with campleaders, and maintain discipline during the project.
