Work

We hope every volunteer to gain insight into traditional Thai farming techniques, immerse themselves in Thai culture, explore Thai cuisine, language, and engage in an exchange of cultural traditions through mutual interaction with the local community.

Cultivate organic vegetables, harvest and store seeds, engage in cooking traditional Thai dishes and desserts using garden products, and participate in community cultural endeavors while also offering English learning opportunities for children.

Volunteers will engage in a range of community-centered initiatives, including collective farming endeavors like cultivating garlic and various crops. Contribute to English teaching sessions at a local school, collaborating with English-speaking educators. Take part in community and religious events, embracing Buddhist practices, and joining cultural festivities. Further strengthen community bonds through shared culinary experiences, crafting delectable dishes and desserts, as well as engaging in herbal activities alongside with community members.

Accomodation and food

We will cook and live together. We are building a new hut to welcome the volunteers. The host provides simple bedding. If you have special need, please inform us in advance.

Location and leisure

Hug Baan Den Organic Farm is situated in Baan Den Udom, a serene village located in the heart of a valley with a flowing river in Thoen District, Lampang Province, Northern Thailand. This village thrives on agriculture, with around 70 households engaging in rice farming, gardening, and raising animals like chickens, fish, and cows in accordance with the seasons. Rooted in the traditional way of life of the Thai Lanna people, the villagers also uphold Buddhist practices. The village holds various agricultural-related traditions like “Raek Na Khwan”, “Burning Khao Lam”, Buddhist Lent, “Loi Krathong” lantern festival, New Year's Day, and “Songkran” water festival. The weather consists of three distinct phases: hot summers February-May ranging from 39 to 42 degrees Celsius, rainy period May/June to September/October with temperatures of 28 to 38 degrees Celsius, and cooler winter November to January spanning 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. During the rainy season, villagers frequently venture into the forest to gather forest products, including mushrooms and other natural vegetables.

Project hosted by

Kru Ann just came back in her family garden in the North Thailand in 2023. With her companion P Poon and their rich experience in eco farming and seeds collecting, they welcome volunteers to support their sustaining traditional agriculture practices and pass down valuable knowledge to interested people.
Hug Baan Den Vegetable Garden spans approximately ½ hectare and features a variety of products including longans, pomelo, bananas, and organic vegetables, all cultivated using traditional farming methods. The garden also serves as a source for preserving local culture and ensuring food security for future generations through the cultivation and storage of seeds.

Work

Volunteers will be arranging creative activities with students. They will be supervised by the teachers. Depending on the volunteers' skills, they will be proposed to organize activities with each class from Grade 1 to Grade 9 twice a week (1-hour session). The idea is that 1 session is more about English language while the other one is free to decide. Outside the school, a few villagers are willing to invite volunteers to learn about the local fisherman lifestyle on Songkhla Lake and organize other common activities.

Accomodation and food

Volunteers will stay in a local house situated in the village centre. There are a kitchen and bathroom in the house. Volunteers can go on foot to the project school which is not far. There will be a simple mat, pillow and mosquito net. You may need to bring your own sleeping bag and other sleeping gear for your comfort. Lunch will be offered at school. There are some small grocery shops in the village and a lot of fish from the fishermen. Local people eat rice (or noodles) 3 times a day with side dishes like curries, omelettes, local leaves and vegetables.

Location and leisure

Ko Nang Kham is a small village situated in Pattalung province, close to the middle part of Songkhla Lake which is Thailand’s biggest lake. The community area is a small island inside the lake so the main career of the villagers is fisheries. Some work on rubber and palm plantation, fruit orchards or shrimp farm. During free time, some villagers gain some extra income from making and selling local desserts and fruit preservation, for instance.

Project hosted by

Volunteers will join a small Muslim community of South Thailand on the banks of Songkhla Lake. They will organize activities for children of the local school and share the life of the villagers.

Directions to meeting point

Intercultural and Language (ICL) – Nakhon Ratchasima, learning and sharing the intercultural and language still are the main purpose. Volunteers will share and exchange culture, language, and knowledge with the local community and students in the school.
English as the global language and intercultural learning are important for local Thai people to understand and be for global citizens. English is also the gateway to open mind and knowledge. The project was created by VSA Thailand and has been successful for eight years. Former volunteers came to give the opportunity for children in schools and the local community. Many local people improved their English skills through exchanging with international volunteers, or at least they try to speak the English language more and dare to face and work with the foreigner even though they cannot speak English. Moreover, volunteers’ activities impacted the local community. They used to stay lively and trusty with the foreigner. Local people have a chance to learn, accept, and adopt the ways of life with the different cultures.
Ban Krogluek School is a primary school, there are about 10 teachers and 100 students from kindergarten (2-6 years old), pratomsuksa 1-6 (7-12 years old).

Phikulthong School is a very small Buddhism school in Chamuang, Khuan Khanun district, Phatthalung province, Southern Thailand. We got to know this school through the director that we use to work with in his former school. The school director who shares the same values as Dalaa would like to provide the chance for the students to improve their English by using the language in real life with foreign volunteers. There are 162 students in this school. Volunteers can help organize English lessons or other fun activities with the students from kindergarten to Grade 6 (6-12 years old). The English skills of the students are very poor, and they are not familiar with foreigners. Here you can experience the locals’ way of life, exchange your cultures with other volunteers and villagers, and support the children’s education.
