Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

SEEDS volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Viðey for the 19th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavík. Viðey is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings.
SEEDS volunteers may carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the island without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture.
The working day normally runs from 09:00 - 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland's changeable weather, as we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The working plan is flexible and it will depend on the needs of our host. No previous experience is necessary.

Alojamiento y comida

SEEDS volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Viðey Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Localización y ocio

Viðey or “Wood Island” is the largest (1.7 km²) island in the Kollafjörður Bay, just outside Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Viðey was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited.
There is a regular ferry connection between the island and the harbour of Reykjavík. The island is only a few hundred metres away from the city and the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Viðey so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serra’s work “Áfangar” and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine Peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Viðey are related to archaeological research.

During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs, making videos or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you!
While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers!
You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a geothermal power plant, a local fauna and/or flora exhibition or an outdoor Icelandic culture museum. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, as well as availability or restrictions of our partner organisations.
You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

SEEDS volunteers will take on a variety of activities, depending on weather conditions and the needs of our partners including working in the forestry section and vegetable greenhouses in the EcoVillage, as well as participating in a nationwide project to raise awareness of ocean pollution, plastic waste, and engage the group in hands-on cleanup efforts in the area, allowing volunteers to make a direct impact!
The camp is based at Alviðra, which offers a range of activities to connect people with nature, such as community gardens, wildlife workshops, school programs, and hikes. As part of the camp, volunteers help maintain the center through tasks like gardening, renovating the house and other projects such as removing old fences to protect wildlife, marking walking paths, and potentially do forestry work like trimming or planting trees.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should be prepared to share environmental issues from their home countries and be ready to spend time outdoors. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule. Depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities as planned.

For 8 mornings of 6 hours each, you will be working on the restoration of a new part of the north facade of the redoubt, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Your job will be to remove the vegetation from the facade and the coping, before removing the pointing and repointing with lime mortar. Other traditional masonry work is planned, such as repairing the stone coping and stone cutting. You will also be taking part in workshops to raise awareness of interculturality and sustainable development.

Alojamiento y comida

Bicycles are available for use around town. Food will be provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner (you will have a food budget that the leaders will manage and communicate with you throughout the work camp). Meals will be prepared in turn by you, especially for lunch and dinner, while respecting environmental values and local resources, as well as everyone's culture (hot and cold dishes as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes will be prepared).

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

You help is needed to continue building up the farm, including construction/ renovating of a tiny house for multifunctional using, made from clay. wood, etc... Previous workcamps in 2023 and 2024 contributed to this project, and now you will have the chance to help complete it. Another manual labour will be renovating other farm facilities. Also, the farm needs a small roundabout that is stable to drive on during wet times.
In August, every garden is in the fullness of its harvest season! Tomatoes sweetened by the sun, courgettes and cucumbers growing at a fast speed and need hard-working hands and hungry mouths. But the weeds don't stop growing either. That's why there will be the opportunity to help in the daily business of Market gardening, such as harvesting, weeding, planting seeds and caring for small plants in the nursery! In other words, there will not only be the opportunity to experience multifaceted gardening firsthand, but also to master manual and physical work in a team. So, if you have extra energy, you are more than welcome!

In our work, we follow the principle of “Market Garden”: Here is what it looks like: on the smallest possible area, as many crops as possible are cultivated without the use of groundwater-damaging fertiliser, only with the help of compost. The most important idea here is recycling, in order to work with as little labour, pesticides and land as possible. Learning gardening skills, the cycle concept and environmental aspects in agriculture are therefore important learning elements during the work camp. Permaculture and biodynamic principles can be experienced here. The care and feeding of chickens and sheep can also be learned in practice. Another important part is building with natural materials. We plan to implement old craft techniques that were used to build houses and infrastructure without modern technology yet were very energy efficient.

Alojamiento y comida

Most of the organic seasonal food comes directly from the field to your plate. Everything else that is needed will be purchased. The diet will be predominantly vegetarian. Cooking will take place together in the outdoor kitchen and there will also be the possibility to cook a "classic" dish from your country of origin. Next to the kitchen, there is also a fireplace for sitting together in the evening, so your musical instruments are most welcome! We will also use the clay oven for pizza at least once.
As far as sleeping is concerned, we will either set up a communal tent directly on the field or provide some beds in construction trailers. A small hutch will serve as our shower, a composting toilet is already part of the sanitary facilities in the field.
Please be ready to live in very basic conditions; you will live outdoors most of the time and close to nature. The work can be physically demanding.

Localización y ocio

Michels Kleinsthof is located between the Black Forest and the Vosges in the border triangle in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany. A nearby quarry pond can be easily reached after work with bicycles provided by the farm and the young, alternative and beautiful student city of Freiburg is also less than 10 minutes away by train. The farm itself is located in a small village called Tunsel, but the entire region is bursting with nature and cultural tourism opportunities. If you are travelling by plane, we would very much appreciate it if you could extend your stay in Central Europe even further, so as not to use climate-damaging mobility just for our project.

Campo de voluntariado organizado por

Michels Kleinsthof is working towards the utopia of a sustainable, resilient, and grandchild-friendly agriculture becoming reality. More than 50 different crops are grown on one hectare using the “Market Gardening” principle. We are part of the movement “Community based agriculture” (in Germany, this is called “Solidarity Farming — Solidarische Landwirtschaft”). This means members are involved in the work on a weekly basis in order to bring sustainable food production to the people. School classes are allowed to experience agriculture firsthand and enjoy looking after chicken, sheep and bees.
There is a great variety of tasks in our diverse garden! Diversity makes us independent of the agricultural industries. It also benefits our fellow creatures of all kinds.
We deliver a large portion of our products to our 90 Solidarity Farming members, while another part is sold at the market in the picturesque nearby town of Staufen.
However, Michel's micro-farm sees itself not only as a food producer, but also as a place of learning and a nature conservation project! Agriculture is the number one cause of species extinction worldwide and is responsible for 25% of climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions. On one of the most fertile soils in Germany, nestled in a beautiful spot between the Vosges and the Black Forest, the micro-farm sets a counterexample to the monocultures of the rest of the Rhine Valley.

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

SEEDS Volunteers will be working for the tenth year helping and supporting the restoration of the artworks of Samúel Jónsson, an Icelandic folk artist, who lived in Selárdalur. During his years of artistic production he produced unique concrete statues using sand from a local beach. Sadly, Jónsson passed away in 1969, leaving his creations without a caretaker. The land and the statues looked like they were simply going to be abandoned to nature in the out-of-the-way valley. However independent and government organisations have worked together with the support of SEEDS volunteers to preserve the site, which still remains for any visitors who would like to see the world through one Icelandic farmer’s eyes.
This year the main tasks of the SEEDS volunteers will be to work on and maintain the walking paths from the Samúel Jónsson Museum to the shore (Leifur-path). There will also be work on the trails on the site, some fencing, gate making and restoring the water intake at Uppsalir (the house of Gísli O. Gíslason), where a museum is in preparation. Inside work, if the days are cold and wet, we will do light cleaning and wall and ceiling painting.
The association for the renovation of Samúel Jónsson's art museum in Selárdalur has been working on the restoration of Samúel's statues and buildings for some years. SEEDS volunteers will be working hand in hand with a well known sculpture artist; who has dedicated several years to this project.

Alojamiento y comida

The volunteers will be hosted in a local house, in sleeping bag accommodation with mattresses on the floor. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Food supplies will be provided and a kitchen will be available, volunteers will share the different duties of cooking and cleaning. Remember to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

Localización y ocio

This camp is located in Selárdalur on the west side of Arnarfjörður, in the Westfjords, which are among the most breathtakingly beautiful places in Iceland, with its high mountains and dramatic fjords cutting deep into the landscape. The Lonely Planet put the area on its top 10 list of regions in the world to visit in 2011.
Jónsson constructed at his farm in Selárdalur a folk art environment that consists of a sculpture garden and two built structures: a chapel and a museum with his paintings and other small works. The story related with the chapel says that Jónsson had made an altarpiece, he wanted to donate to the local church, an offer that was rejected however. So to provide a place for the artwork, Jónsson constructed his own chapel!
Samúel Jónsson could first fully devote himself to creative activities after his retirement as a farmer and then he began building palaces and sculptures. Samúel built a grotesque but charming resemblance to the lion’s fountain in the Alhambra-palace in Granada, Spain, and sculptures of seals and other animals as figures from Icelandic history like Leif the lucky who found America.
The distance from Reykjavik to Selárdalur is about 500 km (8-9 hours drive) via the Whale Bay tunnel; it is perhaps one of Iceland's most remote areas and a very peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy.

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

You'll be working on a timber frame for a hiking shelter, located in the immediate proximity of the Abbey of Clausonne. A local carpenter will guide you in assembling the supporting structure, making the joints, and building the floor. Each day, two members of the group will rotate in preparing meals for the team; the menu will be defined in advance. You'll work on-site during the mornings from Monday to Friday.
Generally speaking, the work involves carpentry, preparing tools and meals, as well as organizing and setting up community life.

Alojamiento y comida

You'll be accommodated in individual tents in the outdoor areas of the municipal gymnasium in the small town of Le Serres, with access to the building's sanitary facilities and kitchen.
Here, we take care with our food to reduce our environmental impact: we eat local as much as possible and reduce our meat consumption to twice a week.
Daily life is organized collectively: menus (vegetarian, vegan diets, etc.), shopping, activities, and so on.

Localización y ocio

The site is located just below the summit of Aujour Mountain, so the view may inspire you to discover the pleasure of the hike in your spare time. Indeed, this spot in the wilderness is ideal for enjoying mountain walking and wandering. You'll have the chance to discover the area in the company of a group of international volunteers, which will enrich your experience. Here, you'll be the protagonist of your stay: you'll organize together your free time with the support of our staff.

Campo de voluntariado organizado por

A small valley in the heart of a sublime alpine landscape, the remains of the 12th-century abbey of Clausonne, and a 300 km hiking trail that crosses the site. All this invites you to discover this rural area and its history! Here, for the past 30 years, a local association has been involved in preserving and promoting the site, as well as contributing to the life of Clausonne and writing its present-day history.
Last summer, work began on the construction of a hiker's shelter on the site. As this is a stage on an itinerary of ancient transhumance routes, you'll be contributing to welcoming cyclists and hikers for years to come.
This project is just one of the many initiatives in which international and local volunteers, the people on work integration programs, and other professionals have participated over the years.
You'll be staying at the Ferme du Faï, an old mountain farmhouse that's kept alive by a team of employees working on the renovation of the buildings, artists and musicians in artistic residences, hikers passing through, and the curious. Roll up your sleeves and join us on-site and in our collective living space!

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

This camp is open to participants aged 16 to 20. During their stay, SEEDS organises a programme that combines learning, sharing, getting to know Iceland and its culture, and having fun while exploring the city and some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Golden Circle and Reykjanes Peninsula excursions.
Note that this is a learning/sharing camp and not a regular workcamp; this project has a smaller volunteer work part and emphasises the personal learning process over the community impact. We may be able to organise some outdoor voluntary work, but it depends on our partners and the weather conditions.

PROJECT: This is the eighteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photography projects and we started organising these camps for teenagers in the year 2010. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-related learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help the participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, as well as to create conceptual frameworks highlighting the participants’ individual style.
Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.
While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture by taking part in it, capturing it and also by displaying their work during the camp. One of our objectives is to empower young people to use photography to draw attention to environmental and cultural subjects and issues.
Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and working within a flexible time schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environment protection by joining outdoor cleanup tasks.

These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or run solely by SEEDS. We also aim to involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and carry out their own trash cleaning projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers.
Volunteers can choose one of the two options below, included as hands-on volunteering activity in the camp:
1. A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash collection in the area, and
the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe.
2. A day trip to the Reykjanes Peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.

Please note that all activities are subject to weather conditions and the availability of our partners.

This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed.
Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking medium to long distances during the cleanups, and during other activities such as sightseeing. Since a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule.
Depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities as planned.
