Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

This is a high-altitude project, so please read the description carefully before signing up. You will be asked to provide a motivation letter related to the project before your registration is confirmed!

Help restore an old mill in the village of Freissinieres!
Nestled in the heart of the mountains, the village of Freissinieres is home to an old mill dating back to the XVIII century. You will be contributing to the second restoration project for this mill, located along the Biaysse torrent and on the route taken by many hikers.
Daily routine : Get ready for a 30-minute morning hike from your camp through the forest. You will cross a wooden bridge over the Biaysse torrent and make one last effort to climb the hill before arriving at the site: the Viollins mill.
As work on the site began last year, you will have the opportunity to complete the building by restoring the four surrounding walls. Regular work on scaffolding, using traditional construction techniques. You will, of course, be assisted by professionals.
But the project doesn't stop there! You will also be responsible for retracing the history of the Viollins mill through an artistic project that you will carry out in collaboration with the village residents.

Alojamiento y comida

You will stay in a dedicated area in the heart of the forest where individual tents will be pitched (and provided). Meals will be prepared outdoors. The group will have to build a clay oven for bread, and cooking will be done over a campfire. To keep food cool, a bucket in the river will serve as a refrigerator. You will share various collective tasks and prepare meals together. A budget will be allocated to the facilitators, and you will participate in shopping and meal preparation, with priority on healthy, local products. A recipe booklet will be provided to encourage responsible purchasing and sustainable eating.

Localización y ocio

The municipality and valley of Freissinieres are located in the Hautes-Alpes (05) at the gateway to the Ecrins National Park, in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. The Viollins mill construction site is located downstream from the town in the direction of Freissinieres. It is situated on the banks of the Biaysse torrent.
In winter as in summer, this sheltered valley offers a wide variety of activities: exploring the region and its specialties, hiking, outdoor sports, meeting locals and engaging in intercultural exchanges, and more.

Campo de voluntariado organizado por

This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Freissinieres municipality and the Ecrins National Park. The municipality wishes to restore the Viollins mill, a building that is part of the municipality's rural heritage and could also become a shelter for walkers.
The municipality will be responsible for installing the kitchen area, purchasing materials and equipment, preparing the site, applying for building permits, and storing the materials needed to build the framework.

Direcciones al punto de encuentro

In many rural households, traditional wood-burning stoves are still used for
daily cooking, which generates high levels of indoor air pollution and
represents a serious risk to health, especially for women and children. This
project seeks to reduce these risks by promoting cleaner cooking alternatives
and better ventilation practices.
The project is carried out in collaboration with institutions and government
agencies of the State of Michoacán, through the Institute of Training for Work of
the State of Michoacán (ICATMI). With the support of international volunteers,
the project not only focuses on the physical installation of the stoves, but also
on raising awareness about their correct use, maintenance, and the
environmental and health benefits they provide.
Participating in this project offers volunteers the opportunity to contribute
directly to community well-being, environmental sustainability, and public
health improvement, while gaining meaningful cultural exchange experiences
in rural Mexico.

Following three successful years of restoration, this year’s project focuses on the interior walls of the church. Some sections were previously covered with cement, which trapped moisture and caused saltpeter to appear. Guided by a specialized technical supervisor, you will participate in the traditional masonry process: removing old plaster, dehumidifying the walls, and applying traditional lime plaster. The project also includes repointing and lime jointing. You will work approximately 4 to 5 hours per day. No prior experience is required, but please bring work clothes that can get dirty. All safety equipment will be provided.

Alojamiento y comida

You will be accommodated at the Marcel Varliette facility in non-mixed sleeping areas (mattresses provided). The facility includes all necessary amenities: toilets, showers, a kitchen, and a common room. The church is located immediately adjacent to the accommodation. You must bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. In the spirit of collective life, meals will be prepared in turns by the participants. The hands-on activities will focus on archaeological investigation and the conservation of historic landscape structures associated with Marksburg Castle’s defensive and agricultural setting. Work will begin with a targeted excavation in a former defensive zone containing stratified deposits from the 16th to the 20th century. Participants will assist in the careful excavation, sorting, and documentation of layers in order to identify structural remains and better understand the site’s successive phases of use.
A second focus will be the rehabilitation of a historic dry-stone retaining wall that formerly stabilised vineyard terraces along the castle’s access route. Damaged sections will be dismantled and rebuilt using traditional dry-stone masonry techniques, reusing original stone material wherever possible. The works will address structural instability while preserving historic construction methods and material character.
An important aspect of the course will be the application of archaeological and dry-stone methodologies within an authentic castle environment, combining investigation with practical conservation. The educational programme will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how archaeological research, traditional building techniques, and cultural landscape conservation interact within a World Heritage site.

Alojamiento y comida

Accommodation
The participants will be lodged in a historic building at Castle Phillipsburg, shared rooms and all necessities provided.

Insurance
In cases of accident and liability all participants from foreign countries are insured by Open Houses. Nevertheless, individual travel insurance is recommended. Participants from outside European Union are insured in cases of illness, too. Participants from the European Union should bring their European Health Insurance Card.
Finances
All costs linked to the project are covered, including food, accommodation, insurance and transportation during the stay at the project. Travel costs to and from the camp place are not covered. Marksburg Castle, situated on a commanding hill above the town of Braubach, is one of the most important examples of medieval military architecture in Germany. Unlike many other castles in the region, Marksburg has never been destroyed, allowing it to retain a high degree of historical authenticity. Originally constructed in 1239, the castle underwent various modifications over the centuries, adapting to evolving defensive needs while preserving its structural integrity. Today, Marksburg serves as the headquarters of the German Castles Association (Deutsche Burgenvereinigung), Germany’s oldest organisation dedicated to the study and preservation of castles. The work carried out by the German Castles Association at Marksburg, both in conservation and in research, exemplifies the ongoing commitment to maintaining the authenticity and cultural value of these historic structures.
The castle is located within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 2002. This 65-kilometre stretch of the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz is recognised for its outstanding cultural landscape, shaped by centuries of human interaction with the natural environment. The site’s inclusion as part of the UNESCO cultural landscape highlights the interdependence of castles, trade routes, and human settlement patterns in shaping the historical development of the Rhine Valley.

Open Houses is a non-profit network dedicated to the preservation and reactivation of historic buildings and sites as shared cultural spaces. Rather than treating heritage as static or purely commemorative, Open Houses understands historic places as environments shaped through continued use, dialogue, and collective responsibility. The organisation initiates and supports projects that combine hands-on conservation with cultural, educational, and community-oriented activities, enabling sites to remain physically accessible and socially meaningful. The main objective of Open Houses is to reactivate historic sites as living parts of their communities, supported by international volunteers who contribute to their conservation and rehabilitation through practical engagement.
The origins of the organisation date to the mid-1980s, when volunteer groups in East Germany began restoring endangered village churches. These efforts quickly evolved beyond repair work into the reanimation of the buildings as lived spaces for exhibitions, music, discussion, and communal engagement. This approach (linking practical preservation with active participation) remains central to Open Houses today.
European Heritage Volunteers is an international programme network initiated and administered by Open Houses to extend these objectives across Germany and beyond. Conceived as a platform for capacity building in the heritage field, it brings together students, emerging professionals, and skilled craftspeople to participate in hands-on conservation projects, training courses, and educational initiatives at heritage sites. The programme combines practical work, such as traditional building techniques, landscape conservation, documentation, and maintenance, with structured learning components addressing heritage theory, site management, and cultural context. Implemented in cooperation with site owners, conservation authorities, and partner organisations, European Heritage Volunteers functions as a bridge between professional heritage practice and international exchange, fostering the transmission of traditional skills, interdisciplinary learning, and shared responsibility for the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

The heritage conservation project at the Naumburg Cathedral Cemetery will centre on the preservation and documentation of the site's historic burial monuments, complemented by an educational programme that situates the site within the broader context of its connection to the inscribed UNESCO World Heritage property.
The project will concentrate on the south-eastern part of the cemetery, where work will focus on the exposure, documentation, and assessment of historic tombstones, contributing to the broader conservation strategy for the site. The project seeks to improve the overall condition of the cemetery while ensuring that further weathering and damage to the historic grave markers are prevented. The participants will engage in a systematic process of uncovering and documenting burial monuments, recording their dimensions, material composition, and state of preservation. Special attention will be given to the identification of structural weaknesses and the development of recommendations for future restoration and conservation measures. Alongside this technical work, the project will also involve historical research on the individuals buried in the cemetery, enhancing knowledge of the site's broader cultural and social relevance.

Naumburg Cathedral of St Peter and Paul, located in Saxony-Anhalt, is one of the most distinguished monuments of the High Middle Ages in Europe. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, the cathedral is renowned for its synthesis of architecture, sculpture, and stained glass, reflecting the artistic and intellectual currents of the 13th century.

Within this World Heritage context lies the Naumburg Cathedral Cemetery, established in 1542 as the Freiheitischer Gottesacker for members of the Mariengemeinde. Its creation formed part of a broader 16th-century shift in burial practices, when cemeteries were relocated beyond dense urban cores in response to epidemics and demographic growth. Laid out just outside the medieval precinct, the cemetery developed as a structured burial ground shaped by confessional change, social hierarchy, and evolving commemorative traditions.

Over time, the opening of a municipal cemetery in 1901 reduced its central role, and by the mid-20th century the site had fallen into neglect, suffering periods of vandalism and abandonment. Since the 1990s, however, renewed attention has led to its gradual rehabilitation. Under the guardianship of the Vereinigte Domstifter, the cemetery has been accessible to the public again since 2014 and has resumed its funerary function since 2016.

Today, the Cathedral Cemetery provides a setting in which funerary art, social memory, and long-term conservation find each other within the wider setting of Naumburg Cathedral. Its historic grave markers, inscriptions, and spatial organisation provide tangible insight into early modern burial culture and the transformation of commemorative practices over several centuries. Working at this site offers participants the opportunity to engage closely with original materials and historic structures while gaining more profound knowledge of how burial grounds function as sources for architectural, artistic, and social history. The cemetery thus serves as a place of remembrance, as well as an educational setting in which conservation practice, historical research, and ethical reflection converge within a protected World Heritage context.

Trabajo a desarrollar en el voluntariado

The European Heritage Training Course at Lauenstein Castle in 2026 will continue the long-term conservation of historic wall paintings, stucco decorations and plastered architectural surfaces, building directly upon the interventions carried out in previous years. Participants will engage in hands-on conservation work within historically significant interiors of the castle, addressing surfaces from different construction and decorative phases that require further stabilisation and protection.
Conservation efforts will focus on areas affected by material degradation, detachment and surface instability. Work will include consolidation of fragile sections, treatment of cracks, edge stabilisation and careful surface protection, ensuring the preservation of both artistic and structural integrity. Particular attention will be given to interiors containing stratified decorative layers uncovered during earlier campaigns, allowing participants to engage with the complexity of layered historical schemes.
Throughout the course, participants will be guided by experienced conservator-restorers, working with traditional materials and established conservation methodologies while adhering to professional and ethical standards. The programme will include theoretical sessions covering historical painting and plaster techniques, approaches to layered surface conservation, documentation practices and the broader conservation principles that frame heritage preservation within a World Heritage context.

The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří (Ore Mountains) is a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning south-eastern Saxony in Germany and north-western Czechia. Shaped by more than eight centuries of mining, the region played a decisive role in European metal production, influencing settlement patterns, technological innovation, and the formation of distinctive mining towns that developed as economic, educational, and cultural centres. Its period of greatest prosperity in the 15th and 16th centuries, driven largely by silver extraction, left a lasting imprint on the architecture and identity of the landscape.

Within this context stands Schloss Lauenstein, located near the Czech border on a rocky outcrop above the Müglitz Valley. The castle forms part of the World Heritage property and represents an important administrative and architectural component of the mining region. Substantially remodelled in the 16th century under the mining official Hans Münzer, the complex embodies Saxon Renaissance architecture and preserves significant interior features, including a vaulted armorial hall and historic stucco and wall decorations.

Today, Schloss Lauenstein houses the Eastern Ore Mountains Museum, which presents the history of mining, settlement, and regional development. The castle’s preserved interiors and museum context provide a highly suitable setting for conservation training, allowing practical work to take place within an authentic historic environment closely linked to the wider cultural landscape of the Ore Mountains.

Volunteers will take part in seasonal maintenance and site care activities that support the everyday functioning and long-term preservation of Lohra Castle and its surrounding grounds. The work focuses on keeping the historic ensemble and its open spaces accessible, safe, and well maintained.
Tasks include mowing and collecting overgrown grass, clearing organic material from paths and public areas, maintaining open spaces around the castle buildings, and assisting with the cleaning and upkeep of communal halls and shared facilities.
Although the project does not involve technical heritage conservation, the work plays an essential role in sustainable heritage management. Through their contribution, volunteers support the continued use of the castle for cultural, educational, and community activities, whose income is reinvested into conservation and restoration programmes.

Alojamiento y comida

Volunteers will be accommodated in small historic service buildings within the castle complex, in shared rooms with simple but adequate facilities. Rooms are arranged for 2–5 people. Showers and toilets are available, with limited hot water. The overall living conditions are basic, reflecting the historic character of the site.
A fully equipped communal kitchen is located in a separate historic building near the accommodation. Meals are prepared collectively as part of community life, and each participant will be involved in cooking during the stay. Volunteers are encouraged to bring recipes from their home countries to share food traditions with the group.
Accommodation and food during the project are provided by the hosting organisation. Any participation fees charged by sending organisations are not transferred to the host and remain with the sending organisation.

Localización y ocio

Lohra Castle is located in northern Thuringia, close to the Harz low mountain range, in a rural area characterised by forests, hills, and protected natural landscapes. The castle has medieval origins dating back to the 11th century and developed over several centuries from a fortified complex into a mixed residential and agricultural ensemble. Notable features include a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, traces of medieval fortifications and towers, a Renaissance-era manor house, and later farm buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. After decades of abandonment, the site has been gradually revitalised since the 1990s and today functions as a place for cultural activities, education, and volunteer-based site care.
The next small towns are Bleicherode (approx. 6 km) and Nordhausen (approx. 20 km). The castle stands slightly above the surrounding villages and is reached via a forest road and walking paths.
The workcamp takes place in a quiet, countryside setting. Volunteers should not expect urban leisure infrastructure, but rather a nature-oriented environment and simple village surroundings. In their free time, participants can go for walks or hikes in the protected natural area, relax at the castle, or organise informal group activities such as games, music evenings, campfires, or shared cooking.
Depending on the group’s interests, short excursions to nearby towns or cultural sites can be organised together during the stay.

Campo de voluntariado organizado por

Open Houses is a non-profit network that has organised international volunteer workcamps and building projects at historic sites in Germany since the mid-1980s. Its work is rooted in the idea of opening historic places as spaces for common responsibility, intercultural exchange, and non-commercial encounter.
The organisation supports the revitalisation and long-term care of historic buildings and cultural landscapes through volunteer engagement, focusing on everyday maintenance, small-scale renovation, and community-based use of heritage sites. Rather than acting as a sole operator, Open Houses works as an initiator and facilitator, cooperating with site owners, local actors, and partner organisations.
At Lohra Castle, Open Houses coordinates volunteer-based site care and ensures that the castle remains a living place for cultural activities, educational initiatives, and international exchange. The organisation provides overall project coordination, accommodation, work supervision, and group support throughout the workcamp.

Volunteers should be motivated to take part in physically active outdoor work and be prepared for simple living conditions in a rural environment. Flexibility, a cooperative attitude, and willingness to participate in everyday community tasks (such as cooking and cleaning) are essential.
The work takes place in all weather conditions, including rain and cooler days. Participants should bring appropriate clothing and sturdy work shoes.
The project is suitable for volunteers who are interested in heritage, nature, and community life, and who are open to intercultural exchange. Previous experience is not required.
