Arbejde

The main works are planting vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc at the eco-farming camp. Also, volunteers may work on making fences to protect the farm, etc. Quite tiring but let's enjoy it.

Kost og logi

Summer house or Mongolian traditional tents which is GER (traditional tent). Need to bring Sleeping bag. Cooked by volunteers with a local staff.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Cultural exchange program, excursions, etc.

Arrangeret af

Since 2000 we have had volunteers around the world joining our summer programs which were designed around building sustainable vegetable farming facilities. Over the years we have learned that developing eco-friendly and sustainable farming facilities does require a lot of research on improving our farming methods, learning the best practices from local farmers on improving the crop quality and perseverance despite the setbacks which were imminent in harsh Mongolian continental climate, with long, frigid winters and short, warm summers.
We are hoping to transform our eco-friendly vegetable farming facility into a sustainable organic farming training center which teaches the low income families how to grow healthy greens on their own. Organic fruits and vegetables are sparse and expensive in Mongolia which makes them unaffordable for many low income families. We are planning to donate any crops from our facilities to families in need in addition to providing them with the knowledge of how to grow their own crops.

Rejsevejledning til mødested

We will pick volunteers up from the airport or train station according to request of volunteers.

Yderligere detaljer

45 km from Ulaanbaatar. Place name is “BUHUG”. The sight is just unbelievably beautiful, typical Mongolian plain.

Krav

To like farming/physical works and be flexible/ adaptable. Mongolian speakers are welcome!

These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or organised solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:
A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe.
A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.
All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned.

Kost og logi

In this workcamp we are constructing a self-sufficient solar power energy system with
energy storage facilities. This system is a possible way of creating resilient energy supply in a
decentralized manner keeping private energy supply in a more personal responsibility
compared to a centralized energy network run by big company. Additionally, natural
gardening tasks will contribute to a varied working experience with many fields of learning.

The aim of our association Zukunftsweise e.V. is to build a non-profit learning centre in
which alternative ways of life and economy are researched and practiced and a constructive
coexistence is to be learned and lived. The focus now, is on construction & the effect of
energy-self-sufficient micro-solar networks, which are necessary for a sustainable energy
industry at the moment. This method represents an innovative approach - as an alternative
to fossil or nuclear electricity from the public grid. Each unit has its own energy storage &
inverter.

The Nordloh seminar house is a former, typical North German farmhouse. It is available for school trips, confirmation groups, camps, children's and youth work and other activities. In co-operation with the local citizens' association, the house is now also to become a meeting place for people in the surrounding area. The new ceramics workshop was recently inaugurated. Further activities, such as cookery courses, are to follow.
In the practical part of the work camp, you will create an organic garden to grow herbs and vegetables for the seminar house kitchen. You will also build compost bins for the garden and help build a green roof for the tool shed. The garden and the green roof are intended to ensure more plant diversity and provide a source of food for native and rare insects.
The study part on the topic of "Nature conservation - climate change - sustainability" takes you on (cycling) excursions in the Ammerland and Oldenburger Land region and to the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven, "a unique world of experience on the topics of climate, climate change and weather” (https://www.klimahaus-bremerhaven.de/en/). The excursions in your area will take you into the history of moorland cultivation and renaturalisation in the Oldenburg region. You will be surprised at what there is to discover in the surrounding area.
You will also organise part of the studio part yourselves by discussing how climate change is visible in your home countries and what states, but also each individual, can do to live in a sustainable and socially acceptable way so that the world has a future.

The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles. Therefore, the activities at Lohra Castle combine aspects of cultural heritage preservation and aspects of natural heritage preservation. The castle is surrounded by a vast green area and the volunteers will help in the maintenance of it. Near the youth accommodation houses that are part of the Lohra Castle complex there is a camping site which can be used by youth groups, for this reason the area should be made accessible from overgrown grass. The tasks will be mowing and collecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds.

The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months.

The volunteers work six hours per day five days a week. The afternoons and evenings can be used for nearby cultural attractions, games, group activities, campfires and other similar things. On the weekends the volunteers have the opportunity to visit nearby places.

Kost og logi

ACCOMMODATION
In most of Open Houses' camps the volunteers will live at the same places they also work on, what means that they live more or less on a building site. In most of the Heritage Volunteers Projects the accommodation is located in a certain distance to the working site. The accommodation is usually very simple; there are shared rooms with simple beds or mattresses at most of the places. Shower, toilet and kitchen are at the place, but sometimes not in the same building. The equipment is simple but fair. After work, when everybody wants to take a shower, there can be a limit of hot water.

FOOD
The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.

FINANCES
All costs linked to the project are covered, including food, accommodation, insurance and transportation during the stay at the project. Travel costs to and from the camp place are not covered. Participants should organise their journey to and from the project place by themselves and on their own expenses. Furthermore, participants should bring their own pocket money.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. It
s architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today.

The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest.

For years Lohra Castle was vacant. In the 1990s a civil society association which became today’s Open Houses, began to rescue the castle and to revitalise it through cultural activities. The process of rehabilitation of cultural heritage not only brought new life and use to an otherwise forgotten monument, but it also provided with a new space where young people could reconnect with tangible heritage while valorising the relevance of preserving a historical monument. Since then, a large number of international workcamps, heritage volunteering projects, heritage training courses, seminars, exhibitions, concerts and other activities with international participants have been taking place every year in the castle.

Arrangeret af

Open Houses are more than just empty buildings. They're places steeped in history, both obvious and hidden. These are places that have been around for centuries, shaped by those who lived there long ago and those who left recently. They're spaces where dreams and ideas thrive, where people from different backgrounds, cultures, and ages can come together to share and connect.
The history of Open Houses Network began in the mid-1980s when a group of young people in East Germany decided to restore village churches as volunteers to prevent them from falling into disrepair. Their efforts breathed new life into these spaces, hosting exhibitions, concerts, and gatherings that went beyond mere restoration work.
Today, while there's less need for places free from political pressure, it's still hard to find spots where people can meet without commercial agendas or bureaucratic hurdles. The balance between public engagement and private life is tricky to navigate, requiring constant effort to cut through red tape and financial constraints.
The idea of shared public spaces is fading, with fewer places available for collective work. The Open Houses Network aims to change that. We're not just doers; we're visionaries who want to create and protect spaces where people can come together, collaborate, and make a difference. Our projects and events are invitations for everyone to get involved, to make space for commitment, change, and connection.

In Tanzania, as in any other countries around the world, the topic of sustainable living has become a hot discussion. However, many people may have heard about sustainable living but are not sure exactly what it means. Lack of knowledge and exposure have significantly increased lifestyles that cause more environmental and health damage for future generations to deal with. Sustainable living applies to almost every part of daily life hence there is an importance to be addressed.

In responding to the issue of sustainable living; the Eco Village (host of this work camp) was established. The Eco-Village initiative is a community designed to address challenges to attain sustainable development. Village members are united by shared ecological, socioeconomic and cultural spiritual values and the village is characterized by efficient energy use, enhanced recreational values, encouraging biogas and local food production, sustainable reliance on local resources and investing on environmental conservation. The overall goal is to build an ecologically balanced society.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches.
Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees.
This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.

Kost og logi

The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found spread around the area, which is a popular attraction among foreign and local visitors.
The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafés and bars.

The Awareness, Engagement & Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action! One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline.
SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country.
