At this camp, volunteering is about being part of a living, breathing community — caring for the land, the people, and the spaces we share. Participants take part in hands-on ecological work, helping to restore areas affected by fire through planting native species, protecting soil, and supporting local biodiversity
• Ecological Restoration: Plant native species, protect soil, and bring life back to fire-affected areas.
• Community Connections: Collaborate with locals, join workshops, and share stories across cultures.
• Everyday Life: Water gardens, help with meals, care for shared spaces, and enjoy playful moments together.
Every task is a chance to learn, connect, and grow — with nature, the community, and yourself.

This project is actively working for SDGs 4 (Quality Education)/ SDGs 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and has been organized together with Buna-no-mori Shizen Gakko (nature school with beech forests) since 2003. BSG was started in 1998 to promote ecological education for kids and run various kinds of programs such as walking in the forest as the school program, trekking and searching for fossils for the tourists and kids camps in the spring/ summer vacations as well as training for the nature guides, maintaining the community farm, exchange with the local community, etc.
*Outcome of this workcamp: In 2025, 4 international vols. worked together with the local people and made great contribution such as exchanging with the local kids to grow glocal friendship! Please see the long term goal of this project as "Local SDGs" at https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/n1-68295484 (only Japanese for the moment, but you can at least enjoy the pictures!)

Landscape conservation and nature protection in beautiful surroundings and sightseeing in the big city! You can experience both at this camp on the outskirts of Hamburg.
Under the guidance of staff from the Elbe-Tideauenzentrum, you will mainly work in the Boberger Niederung and Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserves, as well as in other areas such as the Obere Tideelbe floodplain, Allermöher Wiesen, Horster Moor and Heuckenlock.
The Boberger Niederung nature reserve is exceptionally diverse: sand dunes and heathland, moors, marsh meadows, water bodies and near-natural forests come together on 464 hectares. Around 650 plant species grow here, including many highly endangered or rare species, such as the broad-leaved marsh orchid (a type of orchid). Endangered animal species such as the blue-winged grasshopper, the grass snake and the snipe also have their habitat here. A special feature of the area is the inland dune, which is considered one of the most endangered biotope types in Germany.
Regular maintenance measures are necessary to preserve the open structure and biodiversity of these sensitive habitats. This is where your practical work comes in: you will help mow orchid meadows, remove emerging shrubs such as hawthorn in selected areas (‘clearing’) and take part in litter collection campaigns.
You will also be active in the Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserve, where you will be removing scrub and ringing invasive black cherry trees. This involves peeling the bark from the trunk to interrupt the transport of nutrients in the tree, preventing the species from spreading further. In one area, you will also remove Japanese knotweed to curb the spread of this highly invasive neophyte. The approximately 225-hectare area is characterised by a varied floodplain landscape and provides a habitat for numerous animal species, including beavers, orioles and ant lions.
During a trip to the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre in Hamburg-Moorwerder, you will get an insight into the exhibition and a guided tour of the adjacent Heuckenlock nature reserve – a unique freshwater floodplain with around 100 hectares of riparian forest in the south of the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg, where white-tailed eagles breed, among other species. You will probably also help with work in the garden or on the outdoor area of the Elbe Tidal Centre.
In addition to the practical work, you will learn a lot about nature and environmental protection in general as well as the nature and habitat in these special nature reserves from employees of the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre. You will learn a lot about the local flora and fauna as well as the special need for protection of animals and plants on the Red List:
Information (unfortunately only in German) about the Boberger Niederung and Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserves and the Elbe tidal floodplain centre can be found here:

You will stay at Haus Warwisch, a quiet and idyllic self-catering house on the outskirts of Hamburg directly on the Elbe. It offers space for two groups. In your living area there is a 7-bed room, a 6-bed room and a 2-bed room. There is also a kitchen, a dining room and lounge as well as a shower and toilet for men and women. A campfire and barbecue area as well as a football pitch and basketball hoop are available in the outdoor area 70 metres away.
You cater for yourselves and cook together. You will be provided with money for shopping. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any intolerances when registering.

Beliggenhed og fritid

In your free time, you can enjoy your quiet accommodation and the beautiful surroundings by taking part in sports and spending evenings together around the campfire. You can also go on excursions to Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, where a wide range of leisure activities await you.

The Society for Ecological Planning e.V. (GÖP) is a non-profit nature conservation association. It looks after 14 of Hamburg's 37 nature reserves and runs the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre, an important extracurricular educational institution dedicated to the freshwater tidal floodplains, which are unique in Europe. With mostly self-built exhibits on local nature, flora and fauna, the exhibition provides insights into these special features and motivates visitors to try things out and experience them. The staff of the Elbe Tidal Floodplain Centre carry out nature conservation measures in the 14 nature reserves.

The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. MOVE is a workcamp NGO founded in 2006. Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) was founded in 2011 to run the school providing education, cultural workshops, leisure activities and lunch to the children aged 6-18 who are not allowed to go to public schools due to the lack of citizenship. Many of them are refugees or immigrants from Myanmar, Indonesia, etc. while others have different backgrounds in their families such as poverty, drug addiction, child abuse, prostitution, etc. YCK operate in partnership with Ministry of Women and Child Welfare and got new rooms on the 3rd to 5th floors of the big building in 2025. The workcamps have been successful and in 2025, 59 vols. from Japan, Italy, Hong Kong and Spain joined 6 workcamps with creating great impact! You may wonder if the volunteering for short term can be useful for their education and even worry if they feel too sad and tired to repeat hi and bye. But children have got greatly motivated to study by having international big sisters/ brothers as one of their role models and felt happiness and encouragement by having reliable adult friends since they had been terribly neglected by the society.

Based on the time of the year the volunteers will be working during the day or
at night in the months of August and September from 20:00 to 08:00.
Depending on the number of turtles that come ashore, two teams might be
formed among the volunteers. In this way, each group will be taking turns,
working one night, and taking the next night off for recovery.
In addition, the weekends are also spared for resting. Some of the activities to
be performed are:
1.Finding adult turtles and collecting their eggs.
2.Moving the eggs to a protected place called Vivero.
3.Releasing newborn baby turtles into the sea.
4.Patrolling the beaches at night.
5.Making some reconstruction in the most important turtle camps of the
region.
Please consider that the schedule is subject to change depending on the
weather conditions and the condition of the sea turtles and it is possible to
work with crocodiles in case there is no work with turtles, this can happen
mostly in the months of January and February.
The coordinator or the camp leader will be informing you regarding your work
schedule.

LOCATION
Rincon de Guayabitos, also known as Guayabitos, is a beach town located in the
astonishing Sierra Madre Occidental, in the state of Nayarit and bathed by the waters
of the Pacific Ocean. It is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the cities
of Tepic, Guadalajara and Puerto Valarta.
LASURE TIME
Riviera Nayarit is emerging as one of the most attractive and magic destinations of
Mexico. The area extends approximately 300 kilometers along the coast, integrated
by mountainous jungle and facing coastal islands. For those seeking a more rural
and rustic experience with magic beach towns in Mexico, the Riviera has a massive
open space for everyone along the Nayarit coast.

Arrangeret af

Vive Mexico has been organizing this workcamp regularly in Rincon de
Guayabitos, Nayarit since 2014. The main achievement of the project is to
protect the sea turtles with the help of volunteers who will be cooperating with
a team of biologists. Up to now, the project has been quite successful and has
reached extraordinary results. Participating in sea turtle conservation is a great
opportunity to discover the rather charming life of sea turtles.

We highly recommend to use green travel options, if possible. In case you have to take a flight Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) and Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) are the closest options. From there you will have to continue your journey by public transportation (trains, buses) to Ulmen (a city in the federal state Rheinland-Pfalz). From there you will be picked up at specific times and brought by car to the accomodation of the camp in Ueß.

Arbejde

During the project weeks, ditches are sealed. To achieve this, materials are transported into the area using wheelbarrows over wooden planks, boards are hammered and screwed into the ground, and sacks filled with sawdust and wood chips are used—or the material is directly compacted into the ditches to seal them. Teamwork is essential in this process. Additionally, shrubs and young trees such as birch, spruce, and willow are cut down and removed from the mire. The work is hands-on, wet, and muddy, but at the same time, great care is needed to avoid damaging the fragile mire vegetation. To protect the peatland, volunteers move exclusively on wooden walkways, which they build themselves.

Volunteers are invited to help with the care and maintenance of this social centre and its various areas. There is work outside and inside: The meadow orchard must be cleared of bushes and, depending on the weather, apples can be collected and processed into apple juice. The work in the organic vegetable garden also depends on the weather, usually the volunteers help with the harvest of fruit and vegetables. In the castle itself, there is painting and cleaning work to be done to maintain the building. Encounters with kids and people of the region are foreseen. Overall, there is a wide variety of tasks - something for everyone!

Study: We may learn more about the natural beauty of the environment. We can make excursions to places of cultural and historical interest (e.g. Weimar, the city of Goethe and the former concentration camp Buchenwald). We can have discussions and lectures about German history, society, culture and politics (the German East-West border was only 9 km away from Bedheim). There will be the possibility to meet pupils of a local primary school. Please prepare yourself for an exchange about the culture and living conditions in your countries

Kost og logi

Bedheim castle offers simple group accommodation in the “Remise” – former coach house. Beds will be provided, no sleeping bag needed. Meals will be prepared by the group (less meat but a lot of very good vegetables and fruits from the nursery). Warm water is provided by a solar collector and electricity. Please note: Rooms are heated with one big wood-burning stove. It can be chilly for people, who are used to central heating.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Bedheim castle is located in the west of Thuringia, close to the Bavarian border. The nearest bigger town is Coburg (28 km away). Bedheim is surrounded by the extraordinarily beautiful Franconian landscape. Usually weather is fine, but it can be rainy and quite cold in Autumn .

Arrangeret af

Bedheim castle was first mentioned in the year 1169 and was destroyed and reconstructed several times in its long history. During the last 30 years, the castle has become a sociocultural center for this remote region. Currently, it offers meeting places for social and cultural initiatives. With historical rooms, the garden café, various types of gardens and its location surrounded by beautiful nature, it is a perfect place to meet with friends, enjoy a good piece of cake, or spend holidays. There are small concerts and exhibitions now and then and one flee market taking place. You also can play table tennis and football. Since 1992, the association has been organizing workcamps. Volunteers enjoy spending their time meeting and work together with the inhabitants. An organic garden, and an architect's office are the basis for the existence of the residents. If you like a simple analogue life with a basic standard, this is the right place for you Last but not least: a nice cat named Rudie is waiting to be petted by the volunteers!
The aim of this project is to create an atmosphere where people with or without disabilities may come, live and work together without any prejudice against handicap, nationality, or religion.

Do you believe in a world free of violence? You can help make that dream a reality by joining the Raising Peace Campaign in Nepal. This campaign is designed to raise awareness about the ongoing violence against women and girls in Nepali society and to empower local communities to take action.About the CampaignIn Nepal, violence against women and girls remains a serious and often hidden problem. It is reported that one-third of married women face emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their spouses. Beyond this, thousands of girls and women are trafficked into forced labor or prostitution each year. Around 5,000 to 12,000 girls aged 10 to 20 are trafficked annually, with 75 of them being under 18 years old. Sadly, many of these women are forced into prostitution. There are many forms of violence that women and girls face in Nepal, including:-Sexual abuse, incest, and rape, often committed by family members.-Trafficking and forced prostitution.-Neglect that can even lead to death.-Feticide and infanticide are often due to gender preference.-Dowry demands and wife abuse. This campaign will educate the community on human rights and violence against women, empowering them to make a stand for change. What Makes This Campaign Special?1.Powerful Awareness Campaigns: The campaign will deliver strong messages of empowerment, such as Say NO to Violence against Women through public drama performances. These performances will draw attention to the issue and spark conversation.2. Interactive Public Forums: We will organize open forums in public spaces where community members can interact and discuss women s violence, its problems, and its solutions. This space will allow open dialogue and learning and empower everyone to take action.3. Education and Empowerment: We aim to educate both men and women about women s rights and help them understand how to implement these rights in their daily lives. We can foster lasting change by bringing human rights education directly to the community. Objectives of the Campaign-Raise Awareness: Spread awareness in the local community about violence against women and its damaging effects.-Promote Women s Rights: Educate people about women s rights and how to implement and protect them at the local level actively.-Empower the Community: Engage local leaders, teachers, women s groups, and teenage girls to spread peace and equality.

Volunteers will take part in seasonal maintenance and site care activities that support the everyday functioning and long-term preservation of Lohra Castle and its surrounding grounds. The work focuses on keeping the historic ensemble and its open spaces accessible, safe, and well maintained throughout the year.
Depending on the season, tasks may include clearing leaves and organic material from paths and courtyards, maintaining open spaces around the castle buildings, preparing and stacking firewood for winter heating, assisting with basic upkeep of fences and outdoor furniture, and supporting the cleaning and maintenance of communal halls and shared facilities.
Although the project does not involve technical heritage conservation, the work plays an essential role in sustainable heritage management. Through their contribution, volunteers support the continued use of the castle for cultural, educational, and community activities, whose income is reinvested into conservation and restoration programmes.

Kost og logi

Volunteers will be accommodated in small historic service buildings within the castle complex, in shared rooms with simple but adequate facilities. Rooms are arranged for 2–5 people. Showers and toilets are available, with limited hot water. The overall living conditions are basic, reflecting the historic character of the site.
A fully equipped communal kitchen is located in a separate historic building near the accommodation. Meals are prepared collectively as part of community life, and each participant will be involved in cooking during the stay. Volunteers are encouraged to bring recipes from their home countries to share food traditions with the group.
Accommodation and food during the project are provided by the hosting organisation. Any participation fees charged by sending organisations are not transferred to the host and remain with the sending organisation.

Beliggenhed og fritid

Lohra Castle is located in northern Thuringia, close to the Harz low mountain range, in a rural area characterised by forests, hills, and protected natural landscapes. The castle has medieval origins dating back to the 11th century and developed over several centuries from a fortified complex into a mixed residential and agricultural ensemble. Notable features include a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, traces of medieval fortifications and towers, a Renaissance-era manor house, and later farm buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. After decades of abandonment, the site has been gradually revitalised since the 1990s and today functions as a place for cultural activities, education, and volunteer-based site care.
The next small towns are Bleicherode (approx. 6 km) and Nordhausen (approx. 20 km). The castle stands slightly above the surrounding villages and is reached via a forest road and walking paths.
The workcamp takes place in a quiet, countryside setting. Volunteers should not expect urban leisure infrastructure, but rather a nature-oriented environment and simple village surroundings. In their free time, participants can go for walks or hikes in the protected natural area, relax at the castle, or organise informal group activities such as games, music evenings, campfires, or shared cooking.
Depending on the group’s interests, short excursions to nearby towns or cultural sites can be organised together during the stay.

Arrangeret af

Open Houses is a non-profit network whose work dates back to the mid-1980s, when voluntary initiatives began restoring historic buildings in East Germany and gradually developed into an international programme of workcamps and building projects at heritage sites. Its work is rooted in the idea of opening historic places as spaces for common responsibility, intercultural exchange, and non-commercial encounter.

The organisation supports the revitalisation and long-term care of historic buildings and cultural landscapes through volunteer engagement, focusing on everyday maintenance, small-scale renovation, and community-based use of heritage sites. Rather than acting as a sole operator, Open Houses works as an initiator and facilitator, cooperating with site owners, local actors, and partner organisations.

At Lohra Castle, Open Houses coordinates volunteer-based site care and ensures that the castle remains a living place for cultural activities, educational initiatives, and international exchange. The organisation provides overall project coordination, accommodation, work supervision, and group support throughout the workcamp.

Rejsevejledning til mødested

The meeting point is the bus stop Großlohra – Friedrichslohra / Wartehalle.
If you arrive by train, travel to Gebra / Hainleite railway station. From the station, walk a few metres in the direction of the village to the nearby bus stop and take bus 29 in the direction of Nordhausen. Get off at Friedrichslohra / Wartehalle.
If you miss the bus, it is possible to walk from Gebra / Hainleite towards the castle area (approx. 1 hour). The route includes a steep uphill section, therefore light and easy-to-carry luggage is strongly recommended.
Detailed arrival information and exact arrival times will be sent to selected volunteers in advance.

Yderligere detaljer

Volunteers should be motivated to take part in physically active outdoor work and be prepared for simple living conditions in a rural environment. Flexibility, a cooperative attitude, and willingness to participate in everyday community tasks (such as cooking and cleaning) are essential.
The work takes place in all weather conditions, including rain and cooler days. Participants should bring appropriate clothing and sturdy work shoes.
The project is suitable for volunteers who are interested in heritage, nature, and community life, and who are open to intercultural exchange. Previous experience is not required.
