Arbeit

InDaHouse Hungary works in Hernádszentandrás, which is a small village with about 400 inhabitants. In this village there are only 2 shops, they sell food and alcohol and some basic household goods. The locals can buy clothes and appliances in nearby towns, but the infrastructure is very poor so they cannot travel easily. InDaHouse wants to open a charity shop in Hernádszentandrás which will sell clothes, household goods, and appliances which they got as a donation for a low price. In addition, they would like to run a community café because there is no community place where the youngsters or adults could spend time together (there is only a pub and a football pitch in the village). The young people and the mothers who stay at home with their kids need a place to meet and socialize with friends. There are 2 old houses that could be used for these purposes but they need renovation. We would like the participants of the workcamp to be involved in renovation works. It will include tiling, flooring, plastering, painting, roof tiling, etc. We have a foreman who has the qualification and ability to break down the working processes for small tasks that everyone is able to carry out. No specific experience is required for this work. We expect this charity shop and community café to become a central place of the village where the inhabitants can meet, it can provide a voluntary workplace of the local youngsters and can be an interesting place for tourists.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

IDH Hungary has a Children and Volunteer Center which was built by volunteers from donations of individuals and companies. The accommodation will be there in big rooms of 6-8 beds. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and towels. In the Center there is a big and well-equipped kitchen. Volunteers will cook for themselves in turns. A group of 3 will be responsible for preparing the food every day. Every person has only one-day cooking duty. The host will buy the raw materials, provide the utensils and help in everything. Vegetarian, gluten and lactose-free food will be available.

Lage und Freizeit

Hernádszentandrás is located in a beautiful area in the North East of Hungary, close to the Slovakian border. The nearest big town is Miskolc, 40 kilometers away. The village has about 400 inhabitants. There is a small shop and a pub in and a restaurant in the next village, Pere. On your free days, you can visit Miskolc or Kosice, or the most famous Hungarian wine region: Tokaj. If you like nature you can hike up to the ruins of Regéc castle, Boldogkővárlja castle or to Zemplén-mountains which has one of the wildest forests in Hungary, with many natural sights.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

InDaHouse Hungary works in one of the poorest and most disadvantaged regions in Hungary, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Our volunteers hold individual and group sessions for underprivileged children to help them with their studies and develop their abilities. Our goal is that the kids who take part in our programme become independent, liable adults who are able to control their own life. We have an Early Childhood Development Program for kids under 6, and we study individually with the older ones (from 6 to 18) to practice comprehension, mathematics and English. We also try to broaden their horizons with different activities e.g. hiking, dance lessons, video making courses, etc. In the near future, we would like to open a charity shop and a café in the village. We have two old buildings for these purposes that need renovation. Working with volunteers from bigger cities and from abroad also helps the local community to connect with different social groups and to be more open. https://indahousehungary.hu/

Lage und Freizeit

All this around the picturesque Lake Bánk, a one-hour car ride or half-day bike trip away from Budapest. Bánk is a tiny village in Nógrád County with its not-so-tiny Lake Bánk in the middle. It has everything a tiny village built around a lake could need: a small store, a tobacco shop, a pizza place, a pub, some hotels, motels and a lakeshore eatery. Plus the extremely friendly locals. Bánkitó Festival has been in town for 12 years, mostly around the Lakeshore and the Camp, though throughout the years, we ventured out to settle around the Reeds and the Meadow. Besides the lake, the small wooden cabins and the venues hiding around small clearings throughout the enclosing forest make Bánkitó the festival it is. In the neighborhood, there are many options for small excursions or even to visit Budapest before or after the festival.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Bánkitó is Hungary’s biggest independent, socially conscious, cultural and community festival with a wide range of programmes throughout its four days in the summer from music through theatre to contemporary art. The 4-day long festival is located in the countryside and hosts 8000 visitors each year. It offers concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, civil initiatives, workshops, and round-table discussions about social justice issues, human rights, and the experiences and cultures of minorities. Next year, Bánkitó will take place for the 10th time in Bánk, a small Hungarian village 60kms away from Budapest. The programme of the festival is always organized around a common theme. In 2020, the topic will be Hungarotherapy. Our aim is to get together as a community, listen to sweet tunes, watch inspiring theatre, see exciting movies and alongside all of that, really knuckle down on what it means to be part of our nation - or of any nation, community or group of people, where you alone are not entirely in control of the narrative being told about the collective you’re grouped with. The collective that, perhaps, if it were more on your terms - you’d be happy to identify with! We want to examine how we can sort through and reclaim the history, the stereotypes, and the symbols that have often been used as political tools for aims we might not be as close to. Which isn’t as simple as examining our old red-white and greens. We want to bring back the stories that shaped us, and we want to be able to share them as our own.

Anforderungen

Please send us a motivation letter focusing on why you would choose to work on the festival, and in which position of the listed above, what kind of related skills or previous experiences you have had at the chosen field. You do not need any special skills to volunteer at the festival. Please include in your motivation letter what fields you would like to work on during the festival, but you should know, that your final position will be decided by our volunteer coordinator. We place a huge emphasis on finding every volunteer the personally most fulfilling task :) We will provide a practical info sheet for our international volunteers containing all transport & venue information, etc.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Our organization has been active in Bercel since 2016, in this disadvantaged region, but rich in natural resources, as a representative of the eco-conscious generation starting new life in the countryside. Our goal is to create a clean, livable and vibrant countryside through our presence and programs. Our activities so far have focused on environmental rehabilitation, community development and ecological cultivation of small gardens along with an environmentally conscious approach. At the same time, it is also extremely important for us to protect the community –forming and cultural heritage: the preservation and transmission of livable human and cultural values. To this end, we have taken part in organizing and carrying out recreational, artistic, nature and environmental events, programs, lectures and exhibitions in the local context. On these occasions, we provided opportunities for local people in the countryside and the proximity to nature to find each other through community cultural traditions, manufactures, crafting, and gastronomy activities. Artisanal and traditional processing of locally grown raw materials. Our programs are implemented in the spirit of environmental awareness, sustainable eco-conscious values and tradition preservation. Through our projects and programs, we can show you how to leave the smallest possible ecological footprint of volunteer simplicity to leave the next generation a more sustainable environment. https://www.facebook.com/Bercelszeg/

Zsámboki Biokert is a four hectare, family scale organic fruit and vegetable garden located in the village of Zsámbok, Hungary, about 50 km from Budapest. The team has been managing the garden since 2012, and provides organic produce to families and consumers in the Gödöllő and Budapest area. Our team in the garden understands that it is very important to remain open to those wanting to learn more about our farm, and organic and biodynamic growing. We believe that it is our responsibility to spread interest in environmentally conscious farming by educating our customers, fellow community members and partners, and young people. We try to do this by engaging directly with those interested at each location where we sell our products, and also by keeping our garden open to visitors, students and community members. Our garden has been the site of numerous practical training courses, customer and student group visits, research studies and international projects. We have hosted many guests, students and growers from around the world at our farm. We work in cooperation with Cargonomia, a local food distribution and cargobicycle logistics center in Budapest, who has collaborated with us in the past in organizing interactive workshops for youth which we have hosted on the farm.

Wer organisiert das Projekt?

Egyesek Youth Association is a community of active youth and young professionals. We contribute to creating communities based on solidarity, where people are aware of their own freedom of choice, they do what they love and connect with each other peacefully. We work together with youth from all walks of life with a special focus on youth at risk. Most of our activities are based in Nógrád-county, a socially and economically disadvantaged part of Hungary, where young people have very few opportunities to meet their peers from other European countries, to engage in multicultural, non-formal learning, or to take part in creative activities during their free time. Working closely with local stakeholders (schools, youth clubs, youth workers, experts) we aim to fill this gap by creating meaningful educational and self-development opportunities locally while involving international youngsters in these programs. https://egyesek.hu/

Arbeit

The organization is active in two very important hiking and touristic areas in Hungary called Bükk and Mátra which both have more than 1000 km hiking trail. The trails and signs need to be renewed in every 5 years - which means about 200 km per year - but there is not enough capacity for this work from local volunteers. The organization would host international volunteers in 2020 for the first time, led by professionals. The voluntary work includes trail sign re-painting, cleaning the hiking paths and renewing the resting areas, e.g. benches, informational boards etc. Activity time takes about 8 hours per day including travel time. It is a good opportunity to get to know some of the best Hungarian trails in two beautiful mountain areas and get to know the natural treasures and wildlife of the Carpathian Basin.

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Accommodation will be organized in a dormitory or similar local accommodation with 2-3 beds per room. Common kitchen will be available with fridge, microwave, stove. The type of meal provided will depend on the type of daily work, e.g. packing lunch for working outdoors, or at the accommodation cooked together by the volunteers. Meals: Vegetarian

Arbeit

Everything green! We like to protect our environment even during a festival, and your job will help to remind visitors of it as well. As an environmental officer it is your daily duty to maintain, empty and keep an eye on the waste containers. Being part of the site clearance team means that you keep the festival free from rubbish, and collect waste in certain areas. Maybe this year you’ll be the person who will take the collected waste from the visitors and give them a reward for it in one of the Green Points. Moreover, you can be responsible for emptying and maintaining the polyduct (selective waste) containers. Don’t forget that protecting the environment is not only our responsibility but it’s also sexy!

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

Arbeit

The children we work with study English in school but they don’t use it in real life. They hardly ever meet people from abroad, they don’t watch films or read books in English. From September we would like to have 2 long term volunteers who will regularly teach them English and this camp will serve as a “warm up” for this project where they can experience how to communicate in English, learn and practice some basics of the language. The programme of the camp will also contain a lot of group and team building activities and games. The camp itself will take for 5 days, the kids will be there from 9 am to 5 pm every day. We expect about 50 children, with age between 7 and 16. They will be in groups of 10, each group lead by 2 volunteers. The volunteers will have to take part of the preparations before the camp and the execution of the programmes. Our national InDaHouse volunteers are responsible for planning the programmes in advance and supplying all the necessary materials and equipment, but if you have some ideas or good practice feel free to share them with us!

Unterkunft und Verpflegung

IDH Hungary has a Children and Volunteer Center which was built by Volunteers from donations of individuals and companies. The accommodation will be there in big rooms with 6-8 beds. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and towels. The breakfast and dinner will be served in the Center. There is a bio garden in the village (BioSzentandrás) which will provide the lunch for the volunteers using their own bio products. Meals: Vegetarian, gluten and lactose free food will be available.

Lage und Freizeit

Hernádszentandrás is located in a beautiful surrounding in the North East of Hungary, close to the Slovakian border. The nearest big Town is Miskolc, 40 kilometres away. The village has about 400 inhabitants. There is a small shop and a pub in Hernádszentandrás and there is a restaurant in the next village, Pere. On your free days you can visit Miskolc or Kosice, or the most famous Hungarian wine region, Tokaj.

In the near future we would like to open a charity shop and a café in the village. We have two old buildings for these purposes that need renovation. Working with volunteers from bigger cities and from abroad also help the local community to connect with different social groups and to be more open. https://indahousehungary.hu/
